    This is probably the most important battle in Czech/Austrian history and not many people even know it. If Rudolf didn´t win here there is a large possibility that habsburgs wouldn´t become a dominant power in central europe in the next centuries. You did a very good job in describing the battle! Also rip my homie Ottokar.

      Well, the only difference would be the name and capital. Quite possibly it would mean Vienna would be the medieval looking city and Prague would be the baroque looking one.
      Also, Bohemia was still more powerfull than Austria till the Battle of the White mountain. Moravian march didn't change a lot.

      As for people not knowing: i had to read "König Ottokars Glück und Ende" by Franz Grillparzer. Which is a very old theater piece that would today be called "based on historical events!" This made me look up what really happend.(in books back then) So i didn't learn it detailed in History but in my german language class.

      It would have been an interesting world, with Premysl dynasty, not the Habsburg one, becoming the political leaders. Note that Charles IV, who turned Prague into beautiful political and educational centre of the Empire was half Premysl himself. Reformation would have come much sooner I think.

      To be honest since the death of Charlemagne every single german emperor has been weak to some degree (even the most powerful of them all, Charles Quint, still had troubles managing the whole thing despite being the ruler of half of Europe, there was never something equivalent to the absolutism you could find in France or Russia where the regime was centralized).
      The goal of the structure was more to keep a balance between duchies and little kingdoms in central Europe and occasionally contain a neighbor (mostly France). In the meantime by the late 1400s England and France were already done with this feudal organization and had created the proto-modern state.
      France slowly ate the HRE for 1000 years (beginning after Charlemagne), only after Napoléon disbanded the HRE the germans (under prussian banner) finally unified and completely reverse the military dynamic with the french but by that time Europe was already in decline and Russia/USA were on the rise.

      Why not? Infantry is slow compared to cavalry. If you want to keep that advantage infantry might be a liability. Back then, infantry was also less well trained. Someone had to guard the camp (which is a bit easier than attacking thousands of trained knights). When facing trained knights they would face horrible casualties.

The reason Rudolf got elected as Holy Roman Emperor in the first place was because Ottokar not only held the only official kingdom within the empire (Bohemia) but also two medium sized duchies in Austria and Styria. Ottokar got too powerful too quickly and Rudolf defeated him to restore the balance of power within the empire.

The pixels just perform actions and react in the way their programming tells them, but humans make specific choices because it's *their* life at stake and there's no respawn in irl.

    Brilliant! I am Czech and I love how you portrayed this battle, one of the most important battles in Czech history. One little thing that I also noticed in video about Battle of Kressenbrunn: In 13. century Bohemian kingdom had in coat of arms (it's that correct term...?) white two tailed lion on red field. It was Otokar grandfather Přemysl Otakar I. who first used it (Otokar is in Czech Republic known as Přemysl Otakar II.). But that is only minor flaw on otherwise wonderful video! Well done! If you want to take another part of our history and portrait it, maybe you find inspiration in Hussites?

His army was pushed to the river and surrounded, when he was expecting his reserves to come to battle and support him (and change course of battle) they have turned back and left the battlefield. Rudolph has bribed them before the battle, also they didn't like Ottakar because of his power. He still refused to surrender and charged to Rudolph, killing his horse and nearly killing him, but Rudolph was saved by his men, Ottakar still fought and was killed by 12 wounds. Rudolph letter to pope: ,,...Although the mentioned king saw a total defeat of his army and that he is abandoned by almost everybody, he did not retreat from our winning battalions, but he fought with huge spirit and morale and wonderful bravery, until some of our knights knocked him off fatally wounded with his horse. I love how you translate the speech bubbles into the native tongue.. :) So a slightly more correct version of one would be "Toho budeš litovat, Rudolfe!"
    It's important toho goes before budeš, as it gives the importance on the subject and Rudolfe, as we add suffix when addressing someone. :)

    Were there any reasons to bend the knee earlier, while Ottokar had been in control of such a large territory? Bohemian rebellion was, obviously, a problem, but surely having far bigger tax and manpower pool offered better chances to deal with the emperor and rebellion at the same time, rather than face Rudolph using vanilla Bohemian army later on.
    Any missing details here? I imagine rebellion was not a coincidence - and if core lands could resent their monarch so much, perhaps Rudolph was also able to convince local elites in non-Bohemian lands to abandon Ottokar?

    • @luboslier347
      @luboslier347 6 років тому +5

      Otokar had to make sure there was no chance of noble uprising/civil war in his core lands(Bohemia, Moravia). It was a pretty pivotal point for the history of Italy (prevented unification under Manfred of Hohenstaufen) and Byzantium (forced the emperor to refocus his efforts from Anatolia to the Balkans, indirectly leading to the rise of the Ottomans). It might have also had effects on Ottokar, as, after Benevento, Manfred's relative Conradin, Duke of Swabia, decided to embark on an ill-fated expedition to Italy where he was killed, causing Swabia to splinter. :)
