I would watch BazTrades anytime
Most of the time these videos are BazPolitics anyway, so it wouldn't be that far off.
You, I like you
Luis Octavio Zavala López I want historian civilis trade. I love the boxes.
same. how about a video about how Hanseatic league went to war with Denmark and resolved that conflict with eh treaty of Stralsund in 1370. I think the Hanseatic league were able to sack Copenhagen during the fighting which was over trade and Denmark attacking Hanseatic league members .
*_Dark UA-cam, show me the forbidden BazTrades_*
Bazbattles, honestly your animated maps could totally be suited to a couple of episodes about trade. I've wanted someone to cover the Hanseatic League in a video at some point
Yeees there is woefully little content on the league on youtube
The East India Company would also be a nice addition, with a little bit of both trade and skirmishing.
This history leads up to one of the seemingly shortest battles yet.
Both archeologists and historians in Trondheim agree that it most likely was way less than that. It was more likely between Olav + 50 to 200 men vs Kalv Arnesønn and Tore Hund + 300 to 800 angry farmers at Stiklestad.
9000 is still a lot of people, all charging in one location and it could take many hours to resolve a pulse-type battle in which people continually charge and retreat and face each other off, or chase at each other's skirmishers - so I'm more partial to the hundreds argument.
The rulers should be careful when throwing their message scrolls across the landscape. Someone could be seriously injured, man!
Some king somewhere: "I need to talk to the guy running the next kingdom over" *yeets parchment*
I don't think they cared. It happens all the time
Here in the Faroe Islands, we still celebrate Ólavsøka in honor of Saint Olaf. Held on 28 to the 29 July, it is by far the largest festival here on the islands and a national holiday, usually about half the population participates. During the festival one can expect to see a lot of different events and activities from Football matches and traditional Faroese boat races, to parades and music concerts.
Thanks for making this video, keep up the good work!
I live right by Stiklestad, and "Olsvukku/Olsok" is definitely a thing here. It's kind of a church holyday, and a day we use flags, but other than that it mostly controls some old superstitions. The rain at "Olsvuku" determines the future weather.
Ezx123 - The Faroe Islands used to be part of Norway before the Kalmar Union happend. I guess you just forgot about us when you got independence.
vatterholm - Interesting on the Faroe Islands it always rain on Ólavsøku, but I guess it always rain her in general so theres that.
There's usually terrible rainy weather around Oslok here too. But I think it's more important if it's freezing or not.
Well, I live by Stiklestad so we take it a bit more serious over here by default.
i live in Stiklestad Norway
its a small village.
can u see the hill from ur house?
I live near the spot Olaf died
Any other Norwegians here?
Hallo noen andre her
Seff! Hvem ser vel ikke på Baz Battles?
WHOIAN FANIAN hei
Every year at Olsok (in the end of Juli) there is a large viking festival at Stiklestad where the tale is retold in a great play! Tore Hund has his own fanclub there, politely booing when Tore gets scorned and clapping when Olav dies^^ Great stuff! Solid video as well!
Wow, what a fascinating battle. Charging unprepared against a superior enemy and getting smashed. The End.
Like a caged rat, they pulled some crazy desperate shit to get out. Sometimes surprise works, the only problem is the enemy was not surprised. Lol.
But it sounds like they sent a lot of the enemy to Valhalla too.
Realy if i was in charge i would just stay on the hill ,what are they going to do charge a highground lol.
if they do ,meet them by charging them down from the hill ,while they were wasting their energy trying to climb it

I love Baz Battles. I watch a few other channels with a similar concept, but this is by far the best one.
yay. this battle took place 2 km away from my house!
The battle wasn't fought in Japan
Ah hello fellow norman!
Sakushi but ur a wapanese wut!?!
He is probably Norwegian weeb
Idiots. 1000 years ago Japan was near the coast of Norway, tectonic plates have since moved it
I love this format and the clarity
Battle of Hafrsfjord next? Thank you for the video. Amazing work!
Yes, we need this.
Did you have a stroke typing the name or is it just Norwegian?
I know im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..?
I somehow lost the password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me.
@Eduardo Case instablaster :)
@Kole Terrell Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
Hold your position firmly, my dudes
skjoldborg(it means shield castle not shield wall! Get it right you uncultured svine)
I love the historical background on these videos! The battle is just one part, and so much would be lost but not looking at the context.
And how do you do your animations? They are very impressive.
What an absolutely beautiful video. They keep adding on so much production value with new videos. The script was written elegantly, blending the myth of viking sagas with as many historic facts as we have of that period, careful not to mislead into thinking this was solid truth. Really really well done, makes you engage so much with the reality of the time and I love the little tidbits like the irony of Olaf's soldiers being pagan, given his zealousness? and later cannonization? Words. I think you guys are awesome. All the best in the future!
Actually love this series! Great work guys honestly
6:03 in the morning on the west coast of the US. God damnit, if I don't stop what I'm doing and watch a BAZ battle idk what I do.
Admiral Yi Sun Shin had some pretty amazing exploits with his famous turtle ships, maybe check those out? Or the Koreans versus the Japanese with what's commonly referred to as the whacha?
I'm always excited to see your videos up. keep up the good work.
This was a very interesting video. It's always nice to know more about little known battles n events in history.
that viking ad seems fitting lol ...it helps that this Channel is about war XD good choice, thanks for interesting vid!
N.A. VI - chan no way did you just? Never mind.....
You do know ads are based on the types of content right? LOL
Uhm... Thats why the company contacted this channel. It hits his viewbase perfectly. Everyone here loves history and war. You know that "targeted advertising" works like that .... right? RIGHT?
I like the storytelling here 😃
Love your historical context in this !!
An awesome and very in-depth video, I cannot wait for the next video! :)
Could you please make a video about Paraguayan war, the biggest conflict in South America history? Many interesting battles to explore.

These videos are so well made. Awesome stuff 😎
Good video as always. Love your presentation, backstory and animation.
"Kingdom of Sweden" in 1030 AD sounds kinda wrong as there is no reliable information [which I can find] to when a unified Kindom of Sweden was actually formed, and the information that exists points towards later dates, the earliest being 1050 [incredibly vague estimate mostly pointing towards an even later date]. The lands were divided between various titleholders mainly being the Swedes in central Sweden and the Geats in the south.
Joel Andreason The first king of Sweden is considerd Erik Segersäll 970 - 995 according to the royal house of Sweden
www.kungahuset.se/monarkinhovstaterna/monarkinisverige/sverigesregenter.4.7c4768101a4e888378000948.html
It mostly depends on how you define Sweden back then. It's hard to tell if he was actually a king of a unified Sweden with a very decentralized kingdom and Geats and Swedes were more or less autonomous. He most certainly was a contributor to a future unified kingdom as he ruled over both Swedes and a larger portion of Geatish lands, but from the various articles I can find he was mostly king of the Geats in name. There are also notes of other domains which remained independent for a while such as an area west of Vänern and the province of Medelpad.
sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svitjod I'd recommend mainly reading the text below the map to the right.
sweden during that time means svealand, or svithjod (in iceland still the name for sweden) which means western sweden around lake mälaren. gotland is included there also but as a tributary part, they were their own people but they paid tribute to the swedes. also in the sagas svithjod hin mikla (larger sweden) included russia. the rest of sweden (what is today sweden) belonged to the geats, norwegians, danes and other minor tribes. småland (literally means small countries) which today is a municipality was back then a patchwork of many different tribes and chieftains.
Most kingdoms of the early to high medieval ages were decentralized, example France during the medieval ages would look like the late HRE where the french King had limited power and land but still the ruler of the "Kingdom of France"
Damn you Baz, I was just about to go to sleep! Good video man.

I love this channel. Keep up the great work!
I came for some great content and wasn't disappointed... Keep it up!
Dude. Your voice is so good, you should do Audiobooks
A. Yusuf not his own voice
I think it’s a program that makes the voice, see his older videos.
+Khasidon I believe he uses a actor
I AGREEEE
I think a lot of non-native english speakers were having a hard time listening to his thick Russian accent so he began hiring this voice actor.
really great video again! tip: include surnames (since there are lots of olafs, hakons etc in norwegian history) + use a better translater when it comes to the speech bubbles ;)
I love the details of who's who and why they are allies or enemies. Such greats videos :)
Absolutely wonderful work! May this venture which will pollinate the minds of new lovers of history earn you both fame and money. Again thank you. Sincerely Michael Anthony Weeks San Antonio Texas.
Hey could you do the battle of Badon Hill? It’s the only battle we know of for sure that had king Arturius
This is one of those really interesting points in history where the loser kind of got to write the history. (which is the case with much of viking history)
Although it wasn't really Olaf or his kin that told his own story, the simple fact that he was christian was enough to make him a saint and hero despite being nothing but a overconfident prick.
Lol, lots of visionaries were pricks. How's that biased?
Nikolaj11 ah thats Saint Olav we are talking about! Swedens Saint is way more worthy of slander! AND WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT DENMARK!
What? Being murdered in a church by peasants because you raised taxes too much... well worthy of being a saint, come on now.
How was he a prick? EDIT: It's as if you haven't watched the video.
Also, he won in the end when his son became the King of Norway.
I just discovered you guys and man this channel is so cool! Thank you for all the content :)
Could you guys maybe do the Battle of Sekigahara?
Or the battle of Vienna?
I love everything you do!
Can you make a video about mongol invasion and Genghis Khaan please?
I don't know how interesting the battles would be. Like at the battle of Muhi they sneaked past the troops defending a bridge and surrounded the Hungarian army in their camp who were ironically defeated by the same strategies they used 200 years prior. Later eastern kings realized that Mongols are shit at sieges so they just built stone castles and had them crash against it...
+1
Choros Should make a mini series about it
What are you talking about? They had so many battles, there's a lot of good ones.
It's not just europe they ravaged. Mongols had heaps of great battles and sieges you can tell about, even the way Genghis used his tent's colour to signal the garrison of said cities of their doom.
Ie. 1st day Genghis used a white tent, meaning the garrison could walk out freely, second day I can't remember but on the last day it was black and everyone would die. This even caused fights to happen with the people inside of these cities as they fought for whether they should just surrender or not.
Eventually the ones who fought for surrender won and let the mongols in. They looked at the massacre and killed everyone inside as they couldn't trust people who killed their own.
Also how they used the citizens of towns the garrisons defended to assault the cities they fled from.
I believe the second day was a red tent, signalling that all men within the city would be killed and the women would be raped and enslaved.
TWO BAZBATTLES IN ONE WEEK!?!?!
My prayers have been answered.
they... weren't in one week..........
Another great video. Well done!
You talked shortly about Sweyn Forkbeard and Canute the Great and their conquest for England, but I think it could be interesting to do a video on them, Æthelred the Unprepared and Edward Ironside. Pretty sure there are some good battles there as well.
You could also do the viking civil war between Sweyn Forkbeard and his father, Harald Bluetooth.
Video starts at 0:30
My sides.
I'm happy they're sponsored and at least Vikings chooses semi-relevant channels to support :/ means they don't rely on UA-cams bullshit
I'm glad too but nobody comes for the sponsor. Ever.
I want to listen to the guy say VIKINGS in an increasingly DRAMATIC WAY, thank you very much
For most youtubers I make sure to skip sponsored content and leave adblock on. This is not one of those channels.
Really interesting interesting lead up but really boring battle. Nice vid though
That's not really that surprising given the situation though...
jens jensen Agreed. It had no tactical cleverness, no "twists" just a simple "bigger numbers wins battles" lesson.
+Leonardo Franzin Ribeiro
Not all battles have to be romanticised, from time to time it's good to have such kind of battles shown. Making it a twist by itself.
SNIperofDARKness02 I'm not asking for romantic battles, just for ones where he shows how a situation allows for a surprising turn of events, showing people how a peculiar situation allows for a wild result.
I guess the wild result would be that Olaf, despite losing the battle, ended up being the "winner" later on in history. Showing that winning battles isn't enough to be considered a great man
As always, great video! Ya killin it, bruh, ya killin it!
Great video, looking forward to the next one.
Origins of the Emperor of Mankind confirmed!
LOL small world man ;)
you talking about me.
Syrena, implying his majesty the God Emperor of Mankind may he be praised, doesn't willingly appear differently to those who look upon him?
By the way I have already voxed the Adeptus Arbites for spreading lies of our lord.
Julian L Be nice he's /ourguy/
Yes, it is called ODIN
Isnt it Knut, not canute? Source : im norwegian
No quite, "Knútr" in Old Norse (Old Icelandic at least), and "Cnut ealles Engla landes cyning" in Old English. Then you have decendants like Knut/Knud/Canute.
Oh alright nice thanks.
His real translation today would be Knud Den Store. meaning the great in danish. most likely got that being from Norway.
But since he ruled England to. and was seen as their first great king actually really building the foundation of England, even getting the papel claim that he and his family was rightfull rulers of England ( and thus, infact kings later all is tied to Denmark, like calling Harold the last saxon king is a bit of a joke. his mother was danish, she is infact blood tied to the royal family of Denmark today, the oldest royal family in the world.
And thus was his father father. And the King before him was also of danish stock. and he promised the throne to both Harold and the Normans who where also tied to Denmark.
An other reason the norman invasion was more succesfull than most. it was bassicly danes taking over from danes, many was related or really didnt feel the need to fight.)
But anyway. since he is so tied to English history and they cant say knud because of the silent d. its said that way.
They should have learned that that. being that around 13% of their languge come from Danish or old nordic, and over 60% of the lords and kings of England has bloodties to Denmark many within 1 link for over a 1000 years after the vikings landed in Brittain.
There is a reason it was called dane land, and danegæld and so on. danish lords became lord in England, and even as they changed to be English it was a choice. it was still the danish families rulling. and being kings. not saxons.

Happy to see my norse friends got their own Baz battle video finally, though you dont mind sharing it with Denmark? ;P
Hope to see something about Sweden as well soon :-) keep up the amazing work!
Finland mentioned!...I didn’t see that ever happening on this channel.
We humilated the vikings. We are superior to them!
@@Kirmukarmu Lack of gold and folk full of sisu, making hit 'n run attacks can deter any opponent. Well, except those religious nuts that had to convert all the people under their flag.
Thorkell? Was that guy an inspiration to Thorkell from Vinland Saga?
Great channel. My favorite on UA-cam.
Your videos are great. I don't mind the ads as long as they are not in the middle of the video.
And then, a Civil War erupted because of religion and an incident.
> Rebels win, the foreign religion is banished. New High King.
> Royals win, well, all is well?
Only Skyrim players will get the reference...
Next up the Battle of Narva (1700) in the Great northen war =)
Nah it's to overestimated, we all know how it happend. People don't know all the other battles Sweden won against coward Russians ;)
I love that this is basically a snapshot of history surrounding a few interconnected and influential people of that time and place. This is much less a "Battle of" and more of a "History surrounding Olaf" which is awesome.
The first battle mentioned is the battle in all of history that took place closest to my town as a kid - where the Finnic tribes thoroughly routed the Norwegian Viking raiders about 1010.
It phisically hurt me how he said Håkon
All Nordic names pronounced by him in all the videos physically hurts me. Though can't really blame him, our names can be a bitch to pronounce for non-natives.
Also I am sure he didn't say Svein as he knew he'd be unable to pronounce it correctly, lol.
Haakon
St. Olaf ora pro nobis !
Tore Hund, Kalf Arnesson and Hårek of Tjøtta was waiting for Olaf in Verdal at the coast, they did not march in from the east the same way as the king (would have been weird walking along with enemies to the battle field). And jarls of Lade (Eirik left his son Håkon and brother Svein to rule) was cast out of Norway by Olaf when he ascended to kingship over Norway, so they were not rebels but foreign enemies who supported Knut.
The animation of a crown dropping through the skull never seizes to make me smile.
*HIRE A SAMURAI!*
Oh wait...
*CHRISTIANISE ALL THE KINGDOMS!*
You could make a religion out of this.
Poor people who could not afford to samuries did not hire samuries.
I get this is sponsored content, but viking battles aren't particularly intersting to talk about since it's shieldwall vs shieldwall pushing eachother. The context is a lot more interesting, but still a decent video. I fucking loved the bulletpoints at the end though
Thanks for a great video
I actually live here LOL. Was so random when i found this channel! Nice video!
Plz do the Northmen conquest of Wessex and Mercia plzz
Genghis Khan uhm yes they did. Sven forkbeard in 1013 and his son Knut the great did in 1014

Perhaps Olaf would appear in one of the later chapters as Canute opponent
At least they're in North America after years of raiding and later conquering Britain, and farm thrall in Sweden now.

Correct
Hey Baz, I love your videos man, I was wondering if there was anyway you could breakdown some of the political structure and military mustering of some of these kingdoms. Like understanding how they levy troops and govern the peasantry and play the game of thrones.
The animations are so good
Amen
last time i was this early the danes ruled the english
Please consider covering the battle of Aint Jalut. This battle halted the Mongol advance into Egypt and was one of the few major defeats the Mongols had faced at that time. There is a lack of videos covering this battle despite it's politics and militarily significance.
3:22 Sweyn Forkbeard was suceeded initially by Harald II of Denmark (his oldest son) and then by Canute
Way to give up the high ground olaf
Could you please cover the battle of Mühldorf (1322)? thx :)

I just binge-watched all of your videos, when are you making more?
More Viking battles.
So, no strategy (I'll just walk into Norway and hope for the best), no tactics (I'll just run down the hill and hope for the best), meager numbers... this is more of a brawl of Stiklestad than the Battle of Stiklestad. The video is great, though, as always, the subject is just not that impressive (at least for me).
The supremecy of the Danes always lasts
As a norwegian i had heard the story... but being able to see the map and hearing it agein made it alot clearer. :)
I was watching Extra Credits' video series on Justinian :)
First they tried to mess with the Finns but had to look for something softer 😋
*Harder*
You mean somebody who had more wealth, Finns had nothing worth raiding.
@@LucidWanderer You might be wrong. Finland (or the areas to north from the gulf of Finland) used to be quite well known for many things, and Finns used to have regional "kings". Finns sure were rich enough, thanks to trading their own goods that northern wilderness and thousands of lakes provided.
During the 11th century and later on, Finns somehow regressed, or other nations went forward in technology and economics. (which make Finland look like backwater)
@@ZeroNitroMan finland was never wealthy lmfao. finland was full of asiatic horde tribes until the swedes and russians intermixed with u and made u majority white
the way i understand it is that one of the vikings primary trade goods (except for slaves) was pelts from the deep woods of finland, and they got those pelts primarily from finnish hunters and traders. no good in raiding and killing the people that provide you with your most priced trading goods. and from the finn perspective, the vikings could provide them with all kinds of stuff that they could never get on their own, so i believe there was a symbiotic relationship going on there for the most part that had grown gradually for a long time.
Did any 1 read Vinland saga it about this period ?
i see you are a man of culture aswell
Though about it when I heard Thorkell!
Thorkell the tall i love that manga.
I just watched the video on historymarche where they speak of the same man Olaf but had a different tale for him. Their were some similarities but some large differences as well which i find interesting and makes me curious why the two different stories from different dates.
