Sail Life - Dead 12V battery in paradise
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 бер 2024
- This week, we finally arrive in the somewhat remote paradise of Barbuda only to immediately have our 12V house battery die on us. Fortunately I build in lots of redundancy so it was no big deal :)

This guy is 100% nerd in a good way. I have been watching him for many years and have learned a lot from him..
Yeah, his taught me what anal retentive means...
I wish they were my neighbors.
that Kayak holdback was hilarious !!!!
I believe it was Nigel Calder who said “Boat batteries don’t die; we murder them”. That said after six years it was time to swap out the offending battery anyway.
As a Network Engineer, I am judging LOL! Redundant system are always a must to have in place. Every nice work.
N+1
You guys make such a beautiful couple. I feel so warm and fuzzy when I see your banter play.
Thank you two.!!!!
Oh happy Sunday, it is very nice to hear from you folks.
By the way Ava, a hack for your front load mildew issue: put an American penny in the soap dispenser drawer. There is something about the copper properties that stops mildew from growing in your washer! I'd still leave the door cracked (love your hack by the way), but the penny will end the mildew smell in the basin and stop the mold growth in the dispenser!
And there will of course be even more airflow if you also pull out the detergent compartment(?), or whatever it's called.
@@angela1984a Yep, I always leave the detergent tray and the door slightly cracked open after use, helps dry out everything inside.
It's always great seeing you guys having fun. Those courses sound like a great idea as well.
I SO look forward to Mads' weekly vids. Just relaxing with a couple of wines and watching. No, didn't get any of that! will have to watch again sober lol.
Bring back the Admiral wagging her finger in the intro. It’s my weekly reminder to behave. Nice video guys.
A recommendation for Ava... Tape a AA battery to the washer door doohickey so that Mads will think it's battery powered and he'll be just fine with it. You're welcome!
6 years from a 12 volt car type battery is pretty good ....as is the norm, great video, great humor between you guys too. be safe
We leave our washer door open for the same reason so completely agree with Ava. We also remove the soap draw to let that dry out as well as its inlet into the washer.
Maas the renaissance Captain. So many good boat skills my friend! My mantra, one is none, two is one and three is the backup! I had two battery banks plus a solar generator as the backup! On all your boat tours never heard you say you had rain catchment? That would be your backup for water! Good job tho thats planning ahead! I live near the intercostal in Little River, SC. You could make a fortune in little time here as a boat build contractor!
The Evil Mads come out. But it was funny😅😊
My father was a boat carpenter for many years. He believed their is no such thing as to much redundancy
We tend to go the direction of simplicity over anything else, but as you say, do what floats your boat. You go get them electronic teets!!
With how dedicated to achieving a good result you've shown yourself to be, I would hire you in a heartbeat for stuff like systems work on a boat. Just saying. Plus, if you could make videos about doing the work... Yes, please do that!
That short little section on the beach had some really nice cinematography. Noice!!
Make sure you open the soap drawer on the washer dryer combo after each run when not using, it’ll hold a little bit of water in the lines. Opening drawers purges the fluid thru gravity on most models..
I like your electrical setup. A couple of backups are always a good thing. I’m a fan of AGM batteries. You might consider one for a replacement. My AGM batteries have always lasted about 10 years. Oh and Ava is so cool. Btw love your solar and wind powered clothes drying system. 😊
Another great episode.
I love your electrics.
When I get my next boat it will be a floating electrical fun fair.
Need that hot water for daily proper showers…
I’m too old for sea dips.
And need that washing machine and air con and Starlink etc etc etc
Ah the backside of Barbuda! Brings back lots of memories.
Mads you do you , the boat is amazing !
So enjoyable watching you guys!
Happy Sunday spiffy batteries for the future. You two are great fun
Really enjoyed this episode 😊
Love this episode, you guys are so funny!
YOU made it rain!!! I usually get blamed for that one by going on my walk! CHEERS from HERE!
As an electronics and boat nerd myself, I'm 100% with Ava on the washing machine door holder. Anything to cut down on mildew is useful by me.
Sorry, Mads ... Ava 1, Mads 0.
Mads, your guidance and redundancy planning is greatly appreciated.
Ava, yes, Hurricane Irma might be the storm you're referring too.
Stay safe and we'll see you next week.
I love that you two are as dorky as me and my wife.
AC/DC is one of my all time favorite rock bands. I didn't know they worked as a battery charger also... Another great video Mads. You can never have too many electronic doo hickies lol.
Ahh a cameo of Mads in his oh so glorious banana hammock
Hi , great to see all is going well , enjoy your selves have fun , your not driving to work with a load of electronics , your sailing freedom bring on the dohickey elector thingy merjigs and do what you want and fair winds . 😉👍
Love that you have all the electronic doohickies and the wisdom to have a simple backup system for them. I'm still a believer in the old lead batteries but do see the practicality of going Lithium.
Turkish towels? Yes please. Amazon perhaps? Thanks for the video.
everyone is giving tips so I'll due my share. It is less tiring to paddle by pointing your belly button from side to side than just your arms. Also too light of a kayak is harder. I owned a 17ft sea kayak for several years. But just going a short distance do what you like and enjoy.
Because 2 is 1 and 1 is none!
Boat parts pusher. 😅 LOL 🤣
Bwahahaa ...."Phew!!! Night terrors avoided!" ...had me in stitches.
Gotta love the stand up and hold trick on the kayak 😅😅😅
1:06 A power fluctuation on a ship is never a good sign.
That's what i've learned from captain Picard ;)
Great vid. Thanks.
Great video
Beautiful beach! Looking forward to seeing more of the island. Can’t wait until next week. 😎🥰
Fun video. Great humor.
Let us know how that frickin bird sanctuary turns out... thanks for the great videos!
Yes, those books look like a bunch of fun ;-) Only you Mads :-)
Sir, your attention to detail is amazing in all areas except for DRESSING YOUR WIRES
Get to it
I think the washer mildew issue is common to all front loading washing machines. I know that all three front loader machines I've had did have that same issue. It's easy enough to leave the door cracked open in a house. That magnet is a good solution for a moving object like a boat or RV.
Thanks
Great video 2x👍
+1 for the door opener thingy. Anyone who ever disassembled a washingmachine that was kept closed all the time will agree, that it is essentially a breeding ground for bacteria and spores. The idea of putting my clothes in one of those things is appaling even years after that experience. So our washing machine stays open whenever possible and wouldn't you know, no more gross stuff growing inside, no additives needed to get rid of weird smells. Ventilation for the win!
Mads, ... an angel? Maybe and angel with little horns! Ha Ha. Can you put up a link to the washer door do-hicky? My better half would love one.
You seem to have kicked the KISS principle into the long grass.
Most all marinas require you to have insurance if you are a contractor working on boats, if you decide to work on boats in America you should look into it if you decide to start a business doing boat electronics etc
Yeah, it's called a "business license". Easy to get and fairly inexpensive.
@@gking5522 he's from Denmark, so I thought maybe he don't know
The sweet test of electronically luxury ! Lol, love ya Mads
Teet
Dont forget to close/open valve when using washing machine.
Heh! "Frigate bird sanctuary." That probably shouldn't crack me up as much as it does.
The Boat Parts Pusher.... The 1st one's $300!!!
Det er så fedt du er lykkedes med din drøm Mads!
I have a rather cheap lead acid battery that is probably coming up on 9 years soon. I have a $7 dollar pwm solar charge controller charging our lead acid starter batter from our solar fed lithium. It is always well maintained and always doing a maintenance charge even when the sun isn't up because the LifePo4 is typically always at a higher voltage. Just make sure the wire is the right size and fused properly. I might have to change my battery in another three years at its current rate of degradation.
Lead acid is rebuildable
Unless your chargers too big and it warped the plate
Please say “sweet teet” more. Please. 😂 As always, great content!
You are a hoot!
The S on yur shirt is for sandingman.........😅
My freinds father was a manager at white sands where princess Diana and the likes of many other celebrities used to travel if you happen to travel it is a great beach and a systern in the property I learned how to sail a sunfish
Thought you were on Saturday Kitchen (UK) Yesterday Madds But it was your Twin Richard Bainbridge!!🤣
I agree...the washer door propper-opener is a necessity
Agreed, shame shd didn't say "zerodis front load washer door prop" ...which would of helped!
I thought your Gennset was repaired, how come you did not use it.
You guys are funny!
There's some beefcake for the ladies!
I thought your laundry was your new sails! J/K 🤣🤣🤣
It almost always make sense to have 12v lead-acis as buffer/battery. Pretty much all 12v things are "12v" as lead-acids are not too fizzy about too much draw. That is the reason all electric cars have 12v lead-acids battery, li-on batteries like to burst into flames with those sudden double voltage draws that "12v" appliances like to do.
The editing skills are improving!
I'm wondering what you guys do with the waste water from the washing machine? What kind of soap do u use? I'm planning on installing a washing machine on my boat also. Kind regard Christo, Belgium.
Sorry, Ava did you say you were going to go the "friggin' bird sanctuary?" :)
😂😂😂 Are we there yet 😅
Bear in mind ABYC is american, which doesn't use international colour codes. IE red and black on mains power.
Leaving hatches open when leaving a boat, or hanging laundry to dry are indicators for rain
You got a LONG life out of that old Lead Acid. A LONG life. I don't think that we ever got more than 4 years out of our boat batteries. We even pulled them and kept them out of the cold weather during the winter.
Some people won't like you talking about ABYC Electrical...because "they can't tell me yada yada yada"...just like the whole Coast Guard certs...they can't (or won't) tell me yada yada yada...ugh.
Good for you on the ABYC Certs.
The annoying thing is he is right, every system needs a back up. If only for a few days but in mid atlantic could equal no water no power for weather up dates. So deep doo doo. Plus he is the coolest nerd about.
Are you going for the technician or advisor certification? Are you able to count your own “somewhat extensive refit” experience as work experience?
I plan to take the electrical advisor certification, except without a course, for similar reasons-standards are very comforting for safety assurance. 👍
Good old lead/acid. 2.2v since the renaissance. Low pressure line off the dive regulator makes short work of inflating and is silent.
Great video. Ava note that there is no "x" in especially. Or in espresso or etcetera for that matter.
Have you guys considered 'Rocker stoppers' for those really 'rolly' anchorages? I thought they were just another 'Let's fleece the Boat Owners' gimmick until I visited a friends boat for a BBQ. When I left our Balboa it was swaying like a Hula Dancer, but his boat, just yards away, was barely moving. When I mentioned how lucky he was to have such a stable hull, he pulled up a line of weird looking 'plastic mushrooms' he had hanging over the side. First chance, I bought a set of four, two per side, and never regretted spending the $60. They're a bit more these days, but still worth it!...
Eva I hope you were taking note how seriously that Mads takes redundancy.
If you have a compartment onboard with a small slot on the bottom
that Mads keeps secured I would be a little concerned.
That may be where he keeps Eva 2.0 stored in case of an emergency.
What???
MADDS??!!!
No dingy wheels??
You got to be kidding me!! LOL
I would have thought you’d have wheels for your dingy AND a winching system to pull it up on the the beach 50-100 feet, for your Little Lady. LOL
This Must hit the top of your priority list quickly…, let just call it …. Another Marriage Saver. LOL
"Sweet teet of electronical luxury" 😆
See you👍🏼🥰🇩🇰
I miss a dc/dc ac/dc ac/ac Counter 😀
❤
My battery bank got down to 11.75 volts and the fridge compressor shut down to protect itself, once charged you have to pull out the fuse to reset itself.......I'm surprised yur fridge didn't shut down is what I'm sayin
No link for ABYC in description ;) But just a google search away anyway!
Just curious, what’s the latest with your Fischer Panda generator? I saw your previous videos about the lovely machine that loves to break.
‘17 was Irma. Ask Collin what he’s found right after it
Batteries don’t die, they are murdered!!!
