This episode originally aired on 11/11, rememberance day. this episode focuses alot on war and the forgotten fallen. There's even scene with a field of poppy's which are symbolic for rememberance day.
Talking about subtle foreshadowing, this episode also includes a history connected to a watch that a character originally wants to know but decides to not find out when given the opportunity.
Oh my god. You're absolutely right!
That’s amazing haha
Jodie is from near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Mandip Gill is from Leeds, West Yorkshire. Tosin Cole grew up in London (New York born), and thus is trying a northern accent. Bradley Walsh is from London.
This was fantastic, loved your dad's take on the new era. I'm really hoping you rewatch flux together to see what he makes of Dan and Karvanista
Hartnell didn’t regenerate outside… he regenerated on the floor of the tardis
Legit one of the best episodes ever. Not even a question IMO. Just so good. And man the music for this episode is among the best there’s ever been on the show.
It's even better on re-watch.
Demons of Punjab... the real demons were humans.
indeed
It’s an all time great episode imo
I believe this episode was filmed in Spain. Specifically province of Granada. It is a particularly beautiful episode, easily one of the best looking in the entire show and beautiful in general too. I absolutely adore this episode! And a lovely reaction from you and your dad! Loved seeing him react to an era he's not seen yet!
A great reaction to a very well told story. Respectful to the reality. It's stories like this that make me love this era and the 13th doctor.
I'd heard somewhere that Jodie Whittaker was named after Jodie Foster; I'm not sure if that was just a rumor or not. What I know for sure is she's from Skelmanthorpe, West Yorkshire (which is near Huddersfield). Jodie spoke about her home town in an interview with Graham Norton around the time that she started her tenure as the Doctor, and she said that the locals know it as "Shat" (short for "Shatterers" due to the rock breaking or "shattering" done during railroad construction as well as work on excavations); thus, she's called herself a "Shat lass". So, yeah... that's where her accent comes from.
I'd love to see your dad's reaction to Rosa.
I found it quite emotional watching your dad see Jodie for the first time and getting to watch this absolutely banging episode, really enjoyed this.
This is a great episode and one of my favourites!
You know, seeing this again fresh off the back of Season 13 has really driven home how much Ryan was the anchor around Season 11's neck. Toisin Cole is stiffer than a 9am whisky.
Yaz was so much better without him. I liked Ryan but he did nothing. Even when he had a plotline with his dad, it was so nothing. Honestly, they've perfectly combined Graham's comedy and Ryan's ability to ask questions into Dan.
@@7thHourFilms Alright lads, I'm just lookin' for the pier 'ead...
How ya like that, eh? Pan-fried Sontaran! Now I'm just gonna... WOK right outta 'ere!
By far my favorite episode of the season. Rosa gets all the attention, and it's a very good episode, but the lame racist time traveler villain brought the whole episode down. This had no flaws. A beautiful story.
42:35 Fear no, the Daily Mail (one of the most right wing papers) bemoaned the content of this one. I would use the Mail as toilet paper if it wasn't for the fear of having a nasty racist rash.
Good for soaking up mud on the wellies.
Jodie was born 30 miles away from where Eccleston was born.
Eg the wrong side of the Pennines 🤣
@Tom Meehan ha ha it's a Lancashire/ Yorkshire joke 🤣 just like Liverpool is at the wrong end of the East lancs Road lol
Friendly banter (well it was back in the day)
Jodie Whittaker is from Yorkshire
Dom: We also just saw her this weekend in a bizarre little film called "Get Santa." ~Dad
An old friend/neighbour that used to know my my mum was from Yorkshire, he was an older man but was very nice and a lot of fun. He was like a fun grandfather figure lol.
@@richardlemin7840 I have family from Knottingley, in Yorkshire, so I'm very familiar with the sound. (My first visit to a glass factory, causing a massive nosebleed afterwards! Jodie was born in Huddersfield.) Similarly, Gracie Fields has the same sound. I love that accent. Jodie also starred in 'Antigone', opposite Christopher Eccleston. Ah, William Hartnell changed to Patrick Troughton on the floor inside the TARDIS. It's the only clip from 'The Tenth Planet' final episode that exists, sadly. A much gentler regeneration than seen in changes latterly.
Jodie's accent is the same as mine, pure Yorkshire! 😊
41:00 The Eleventh Doctor once said he "did some locum work in Brixton - lovely practice - very short staffed" I guess locum can mean other things but in context, seems pretty medical to me.
A great, but terribly sad episode.
Rewatched Series 11 and it is not horrendous at all. Alot of episodes are very old school and fresh in idea and format. I think we will all look back and enjoy 13 in retrospect
Classic Who does get some foreign filming in the late 70s and early 80s, so it won't all be the outskirts of London!
Your dad isn’t the only person to accidentally call Jodie Whittaker Jodie Foster. I have seen many people make that mistake
Good reaction. I think this is one of Jodie's best stories as well. For the record, Jodie has a Yorkshire accent
Maybe you should watch Rosa as well? I'd love to hear your dad's take on how well the time and place was recreated.
I'd guess the mountains are the Sierra Nevada range which are the highest in Spain and are snow capped.
Hartnell regenerated inside the TARDIS, Troughton either did or was in it immediately afterwards
@Tom Meehan
Yeah, poor TARDIS had it bad during the flux.
Spare her!
I agree. They need to try something different with the regeneration.
As far as accents, perhaps dad should research the materials by David and Ben Crystal on Shakespeare's original pronunciation. I think there's a reading performance on UA-cam of Much Ado About Nothing, so you can have your Dogberry and original pronunciation too.
*Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror* pls 👀
Good choice. One of Jodie's better episodes.
Agreed
In subtitles 7:36 ("Vegetarians are assassins")
I'm not the biggest fan of the Historicals but I will say the Historicals and the Dalek episodes are the best of the Jodie Whittaker era in my opinion I also liked "Spyfall" and the one that everyone hates "Orphan 55" because that one felt like to me a Classic Who episode and of course "Fugitive of the Judoon" and "Praxeus". One thing I give Chibnall is he has redeemed the old villains made them a threat again. Speaking of the whereabouts of the regenerations Hartnell actually did regenerate in the TARDIS, Troughton regenerated outside of the TARDIS and put on a monitor screen since NuWho the Doctor always regenerates in the TARDIS and allways have the same old explosive effect it would be nice and I hope when Whittaker regenerates she does it outside and also collapses to the ground and do a different special effect with the regenerations which would be a nice change.
With the Tardis supposedly being alive the least the doctor could do is stop destroying it and bloody go outside to regenerate
but what about It Takes You Away, The Haunting of Villa Diodati and War of the Sontarans?Jodie is great in these episodes. imo
@@joesmith8600 aren't two of those historicals?
@Tom Meehan yes but it's a good episode 😊
@Tom Meehan sure
This stands out as, ahead of Spyfall, as by far the best of the Whitaker/Chibnall era. Mind you, there really isn't much competition. Almost everything else of the era is bog-standard at best. Rosa is a step above that, though held back by the lazy villain of the piece; and much else is pure dross. "Demons" however, had it been a pure historical, could be up there in the very top of new or classic who. As it stands, it isn't far off. And its still a very difficult period to deal with, I imagine more so in the UK with a higher proportion of the population with Indian or Pakistani heritage.
Phenomenal choice
One of my favourites
Your dad seems so cool haha
Although the outgoing British Imperial government, particularly Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy, are frequently blamed for the failings of partition, British policy, and Mountbatten's mission, was to preserve a united India. This was in line with Gandhi's aim but was opposed by leaders of both the Muslim League and the nationalist parties. Essentially, Mountbatten's hand was forced and he agreed to a separation based on religion; Muslims to the newly formed Pakistan, Hindus and Sikhs in India. A couple of provinces has more mixed populations and so they were asked to vote on how to split the provinces between the two countries.
incidentally, Lord Mountbatten was the uncle of the late Duke of Edinburgh and cousin to the Queen. He had a long and illustrious naval career starting during the First World War and continuing on into WW2, where after active service in a number of theatres, he was appointed Supreme Allied Commander South East Asia. In that role he oversaw the reconquest of Singapore and Burma. In the post-war period he continued to serve in the Royal Navy ultimately reaching the summit of military careers on appointment as Chief of the Defence Staff.
Sadly, Lord Mountbatten was assassinated in 1979 by the Provisional IRA when his fishing boat was destroyed by an explosive device during a visit to his Irish home. Two of his grandsons also died in the explosion. This had ramifications beyond the killing of a respected military figure as he had been very close to Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, who viewed him as a mentor.
It is interesting, if ultimately pointless, to speculate how the personal relationships of Prince Charles might have progressed if he had the support of the man he called his honorary grandfather. It is known that Mountbatten had suggested his granddaughter, Amanda Knatchbull as a possible match for Charles although her mother thought her too young at the time. When Charles approached Amanda after Mountbatten's death she refused him; having seen her grandfather, maternal grandmother and young brother killed in the explosion she apparently did not wish to become too close to the Royal Family. As we know, Charles later entered his ultimately doomed marriage to Diana Spencer. One can wonder how things might have been different if we had instead had Amanda Princess of Wales, an intelligent and strong willed woman, professionally qualified in social work who has, in later years held a succession of senior management posts...
When you get to another rewatch, you could check out the original version of Day of The a Daleks, perhaps. Or even check out some of the animations of the missing episodes (even though, I’m not that big a fan of the animations)?
I cry every time lol
I never got into Ryan as a character, he did nothing noteworthy, had hardly any development and was just dull in my opinion. Graham and Yaz aren't too bad, although I've always liked Graham over Yaz and certainly over Ryan. As for new companion, Dan, well, I like him but the Flux had just too much happening to really get a good grip on him with everything happening and all the things going on, Dan just happens to be there and well, I'm still confused as to what actually happened actually Part 3 in particular we have these people to care about Dan's new it's a mess.
Anyway Demons of The Punjab was a good story a good pseudo historical, one of the few stories from the 13th Doctor's era, I really like, she's a good Doctor but the stories let her down, along with Chris Chibnall, he also lets Jodie down, he was a better writer under Russel T Davies and Steven Moffat but as show runner, I'm glad he is leaving!
Not the best choice of episode, frankly. The Doctor is completely useless in this story. The aliens literally have to capture her, forcing her to listen to them both prove their innocence, and explain what is really going on. It's in my bottom 5 episodes of Series 11.
They *should* explain themselves to her. It's logical.
She is kinda like the Yonko of Earth and Time:/
She only knows the Thijarians to be assassins, so I can't blame her for assuming that they still are... and the Doctor's been caught off-guard that way before (see the Ice Warriors in "Curse of Peladon").
That's a good point. He pre-judged them as she did here.
With Michelle Gomez's Missy being a better Timelord than the current Doctor you have the question what is the point of having a female doctor. Just make a female counterpart (Supergirl, Enola Holmes, Romana, River Song) and don't ruin the dynamic and continuity of the show.
@Tom Meehan RTD but definately not Moffat
Depends on the Moffat. Ambitious Moffat (Wedding of River Song, Hell Bent)? No. Horror Moffat (Empty Child, Blink, World Enough and Time) and Brilliant Moffat (Girl in The Fireplace, A Christmas Carol, Heaven Sent)? Absolutely YES!!
@@7thHourFilms so basically Moffat as a writer rather than Moffat as a showrunner and writer? (Bar one or 2 examples I mentioned) I'd agree with that, I always thought him better under RTD than without someone over seeing his work... during the end of matt Smith and through capaldi I have to admit to looking forward to a change as (barring one or two stories) I started finding less and less enjoyment from who (bizarrely one of his last stories is up there as one of my favorites... the cyberman pseudo regeneration story)..
@Tom Meehan I agree, I think had she had better writing she would of done better. 13 is a good Doctor it's just the stories.
I'd say yes. Although, he wasn't a bad showrunner. S5 was very solid and ended quite well. I'd break it down as this: RTD is a great writer. Moffat is a great writer who can get bogged down in his own ambition. Chibnall is a decent writer who can get bogged down in his own ambition. They try to do a bit too much when they need to keep things somewhat simple so that it can be expanded like with World Enough and Time or even S5 (even S12 up to the finale).
My least favorite from the season
That's so weird but its your opinion. Arachnids was far worse for me.
@@7thHourFilms oo yeha that's a good choice
That was terrible
Whaaat haha this is one of my favorites ever
😴😴😴🤮🤮🤮
bruh
So sorry that their reaction made you fall asleep...
