- A check in and discussion on my experiences when I switched from Harley-Davidson to Indian Motorcycles about 5 years ago. The problems I had, the things I liked, etc. I'm sure that my experience was probably unique, but it was still my experience. I went back to Harley-Davidson after only 18 months.

I bought my Dark Horse from the same unmentioned dealer. My check engine light came on on my way home. Took it back numerous times. Finally their top mechanic found the problem. The O2 sensor was ziptied too tight, and every time you torqued the engine with the throttle, the sensor would momentarily lose electrical connection, and trigger the check engine light. I stuck it out with all the tiny problems, and at 30,000 miles, I finally had the bike I wanted. I've put on another 20,000 trouble free miles.
A new motorcycle shouldn't come that way, but it was a brand new company, with a brand new engine, and had their own idiosyncrasies. Most of my friends ride Harleys, so they gave me the nickname "Chief". If you live in South Florida, eventually you'll probably run into me.
My saying is, "Leave your egos at home, and let's ride!"

Been riding for close to fifty years. Bought my first Harley in 2018. SGS. Love it! I did test ride an Indian and I found the suspension IMO better than the Harley. What lead me to the Harley was it was a bucket list thing as I never owned one and two, the massive dealer network. I do wrench on my bikes as far as basics but if I’m far from home and something happens I know I could find a Harley dealer near me. Much more than an Indian dealer. A do have to say that a couple of times I demoed the Indian Scout. That bike is fun and put a smile on my face. But all in all I have two other bikes that fit that niche so I’m not a gotta have guy to justify getting a Scout. I agree with you that I wish Indian success as competition is a good thing. I like all motorcycles and the more the better on the road as it makes drivers more aware ( One would hope). I did hear once a funny Quote about Indian,” Getting a new Indian is like getting a handjob from your sister, it may feel good but you know it just ain’t right...”

I didn’t test ride any Indian motorcycles, but I did go to a local dealership and I couldn’t find one in their entire showroom that fit my tall ass!!!
Each version I sat on had my knees above my hip when my feet were on the pegs or floorboards!!!
Which was a problem for me on. Kawasaki Vulcan 900!!
One hour of riding and my buy felt like I had been sitting on my tailbone on a hardtail bike!!!
You can do a lift, Mr. Monkey! I park my bike on mine when not in use, but you could do the opposite - buy the type of lift that has the sides, a full-size lift - and you can then park the golf cart on the lift when it's not in use and pull it off, put a bike on it when you need to work on one. WINNING! Mine is a Direct Lift, Direct-Lift® Pro-Cycle Droptail XLT Motorcycle Lift - it was ~$900 plus ~$150 shipping, if memory serves - delivered right to the door and minor assembly req'd. I have watched many of your videos and recently subscribed to your channel. I just learned you are originally from St. Louis and that you also rode on the back of your dad's Harley with him. I also have a story of dropping dad's bike on it's side, but it was my neighbor who helped me pick it up and put it right back in the garage. I am from the St. Louis area in a small town called St. Clair, so I am familiar with Doc's. I purchased my first Harley four years ago and absolutely love that bike like I have no other I have owned. It is a 2016 Road King that was two years old when I bought it and I enjoy riding it almost as much as my wife enjoys me taking her out on it, lol.

Don't know why I'm just now seeing this video... But I'm an Indian guy, never had a Harley though. I went Indian because of looks, American made, and wasn't a Harley that I seemed to see around every corner. I had 2 - 2016 Springfields, first one no problems really and I did tinker with it some. Second one had the dreaded clacking and it drove me nuts! It got traded in for a 2021 Indian Roadmaster with the new 116. So far I love it and haven't done much to it yet aside from adding a trailer hitch and wiring harness.
Oh by the way, the first '16 Springfield I had was in a collision with a deer at 70mph. I still have it, stripped it down like a chief and still ride it for short trips and to work. Still runs great. Sucks you had such a bad experience, I do remember hearing about a few ECM's failing like yours.
Yeah. I don't hate them of course. I dont even hate mine. It was a pretty bike, but damn it let me down a lot...
Sad to hear of your experience of your Indian. I have 2015. Put 2nd stage in it after 2yr of own of ownership. Did some of my own customising with out going into detail. Been running great. I travel alot I have 78k on it. Paint work, and chrome on the bike seems as good as when I bought it new. Again, sad hear you're experience but glad you did tell it because Indian may have started cutting corners or what ever. Like Harley, Indian needs to keep quality to keep a great American icon alive.

Not the first rust story I've heard over the years on Indians. One I heard was scary. The guy drove it pretty much year round. Parts were rusting so bad that he ended up trading it off too. I hope Indian is listening. Gotta have real prep work and sealer under that 2 stage paint. Thanks for sharing your story.

Harleys will rust just the same if you ride them year round. I have a 2020 Softa Standard and no matter how much I clean and polish the wheels, the spokes are rusting like hell and the chrome is flaking off. Also, the top of the jiffy stand is rusting.
Last year was my first year at Sturgis and I broke down on the way there. Burned up the ECM when the bike needed to be jump started at a hot springs in Idaho. Long story but either use a jump pack or completely and I mean completely remove the battery from the bike. Luckily, like you, I planned for an expensive trip and the dealer ship helped me out a bit. But I lost a couple days that were ment for Sturgis.
Bought my Indian scout bobber twenty brand new in January, love the bike to death and put around 23,000 miles on it this year. I've run into a few issues like my brakes and gear shifter falling off mid ride but that was an easy fix. Put a new exhaust on myself with a buddy
You seem like a down to earth dude man. You have a solid channel, keep it up! I just want to make one point and then I’ll get off my soapbox. These modern bikes (All of them!) Have a ton of stuff going on. CANBUS systems, ECM’s VCU’s ECU’s, sensors out the ass, infotainment systems that link it all together etc... The bikes folks talk about that were simple exercises in mechanical design with very little to go wrong are long gone. The EPA is assraping manufacturers for selling non-compliant equipment like tuners and such. As cool as those simple older designs are there is simply no comparison to the capabilities of the new bikes (when they’re running which is more of the time than not). In 1955 would I hop on a rough ass riding no technology scoot and ride from New York to L.A.? Sure would, BUT there’s no question that I’d have much more comfort, power,handling and in MOST cases reliability with the newer machines. Not aimed at any brand because us bikers bitch about them all, but we never really step back and realize what an astounding feat of engineering these modern machines are, hell I’m amazed every time I start my scoot and everything works as designed. I’m on my way to work and I hit some gravel and it pumps my brakes for me, my screen diverts me because the system has reached out via satellite and determined a better route to get me there on time, I know exactly what my tire pressure is and how hot my engine is. This shit is bananas! It’s a great time to be a biker, we got some cool toys these days. Pick your flavor and run it but don’t forget just how much is going on underneath the surface of these new bikes! Tons of insane engineering going on that is too vast for my Neanderthal brain to have put together, gotta give credit where credit’s due. I don’t hate on any brand when they have issues these days, I couldn’t design these systems! My $.02

Exactly, Good rant! Except the EPA is using manufacturers to screw bike owners . H-D gets a bad rap by a lot of folks because of some of the BS in the 2015 settlement. The unintended consequence is that I choose to rebuild my scooter instead of buying new. The EPA doesn’t understand or care about the cost of unintended consequences.

Thats one thing that has to be consistent on my bike, is to START !! I look at the tires, Ck the fluids, Turn Key ! I Love my 2019 RG Special W/Chopped tour Pak, But I have to say the shocks Suck!
That lift comment is just knowing my butt is getting to old to crawl around doing the garage yoga. LOL!!! I don't currently have the space for a lift either but working on it. I agree with you in the thought that Indian needs to succeed. And the new lineup they have put out the last couple years looks good. Hopefully they can keep the bikes running.

I saw a video about two years ago, just before I bought my road glide, who had similar issues with his Indian. He lived in Boston, I think, and rode his bike every day, it was his ONLY vehicle. After owning it for only a few months he found rust all over it. He eventually had enough and went back to Harley, but like you be wanted Indian to succeed and be profitable. His story is the reason I stayed with Harley.

Funny story my love for bikes also came at a young age lived in a trailer park our next door neighbor had this bike all dressed out buttons and lights I thought that was the coolest thing I was probably about 8 or 9 and he had it parked in the back of his trailer we’re you really couldn’t see it about every day after school I would go back there and ride the shut out if it only in my mind though, if you can imagine pressing all buttons making the motor sounds lmao! Well this one day it had been raining that morning and like every other day I went back there ride the shit out of it lol and that damn kick stand sunk down into the ground laid that sucker in the ground hit the side of his trailer knocked the mirror off it, now I’m trying my hardest to get that thing back up, well he came around the corner my freakin jaw dropped I just knew I was gonna get beat, he said need some help he helped me get it back up, thankfully he didn’t beat my ass he actually took me on a ride he eventually told me that he knew I was going back there playing on his bike, been in love with bikes my whole life, the bike was a big dressed out Honda gold wing, love the garage stories keep up the content oh and yeah I am glad you don’t do the patreon thing to
That's a great story. Bikers have always been happy to share their love of bikes with kids.
I'm looking for a 2012 Indian of any model. Been told they are extremely rare. Possibly because they didn't make a single bike of their own from 1953 to 2013, with a rare exception in 2008 where they tried with a Buell engine clone and made 1 whole bike that year.
2012 would be a last year Kings Mountain bike with a bottlecap motor, I haven't heard great things about reliability with them, but they are certainly cool.
Your videos are great. I have 2014 vintage with a sidecar and a 2015 roadmaster. No problems and love them both. I also have 2003 heritage and a 2018 fatboy and love them both. You need a bigger toy box to play in.

I'm With you i love old bikes, and my Grandfather when he came to the states from Ireland got a job at Indian in Springfield mass where i'm from (live in NH now) and like you i was excited when i heard Polaris (owner of Victory) was buying Indian, and i rode a Vintage as soon as they came out and my goal was to buy one, then Honda came up with a deal to buy leftover Goldwing F6C Valkyries for 1/2 MSRP, and i rode one at the dealer and an hour later i was riding it home $17,995 valkyrie with an 1832cc monster 125 HP 125 ft lbs torque 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds that i paid $9995 for, what i didn't know was Honda parts are twice as expensive as Harley, and finding tires for the Valkyrie was a NIGHMARE and it ate tires like a fat mexican on taco tuesday, so i was looking to go back to an american bike, but polaris ticked me off when the just dumped Victory (i was looking at the Victory Boardwalk) and i gave the vintage a 2nd look, but ended up going back to Harley and buying a Road king. i know what to expect with Harley. having worked for them for 40 years

I rode H-D's from 1982 until I got a 2016 Chieftain, now it's got 38,000 miles on it. (I live in northern Wisconsin) I'll never go back, but I did lose the fuel pump in Deadwood. I had it towed to Sturgis Indian, they were awesome, but it was late in the day, so it had to stay over night. I had to ride bitch on my buddy's Roadmaster to the hotel in Rapid City & back the next day. Those were the longest twenty mile rides of my life!
Gilroy was the first reincarnation of indian. Kings mountain was later and didn't do well
I've owned 3 Indian since 2016 and agree the brand has had its run ins with quality shortfalls in paint and parts. A 16 scout, an 18 Springfield DH 111 and now a 20 Chieftain DH 116. Almost of the little electronic gremlins you talked about I've experienced with my 18 in one way or another but I dug into the bike to figure it out b4 the dealer could 9x/10. The rectifier was an issue, the gear swith indicator was an issue, the battery drain was an issue due to the security system putting a constant pull on the battery, the alternator cable would come loose under the boot at the front on the bike and not charging the bike was an issue, the battery cables would come loose. I'm a wrench Turner and can't leave anything stock or pay a dealer to fix anything I can do. Every little gripe that 18 and prior Indians suffered from was rectified for the 19+. My 2020 116 Chieftain DH is my life long Indian now. Only issue I've had was a bad GPS puck. Too much tech in a bike can be a downfall but it's welcome since most standard option on Indians are thousands of extra dollars at HD. I think both brand have their place and Indian makes HD want to be better and vice versa. Keep the dirty side down bro... and maybe get you a 116 Chieftain 😉🤘

I have heard about the rust problem with Indian and it's a shame because the chief with the natural bags I think is beautiful but that keep me from buying it . The Challenger is the first bike in a long time that made me touch myself but they also had electrical problems. I've said this a dozen times I'd like to see Harley challenge the Challenger. That's a bike that would sell a liquid cooled monster that needed nothing to make it perform.

2015 softail deluxe and a 2015 indian chief classic . Thank God no issue with either. But I will say both being same year Indian gave you more as standard. Abs, fully Chrome forks, led signal and tail lights and the engine was bigger than the cvo in the day etc. Love them both they are just different. . Stay safe my friend love the videos 👊

I have the exact same story with my 12 road king. My 19 Chieftain is flawless after 14k miles.

I made it 7 months with my 2019 Indian Chieftain Dark Horse. Had the stage 1 installed at the dealership along with bars and some other accessories. My biggest issue with the bike was a problem with a sensor that was changed two times by the dealership, it had something to do with the kickstand so every time I put the kickstand down it would kill the motor. Not a major problem at all but just a bit glitchy. The bike rode great put 6,800 miles on it in the 7 months I had it. My main reason for going back to Harley (2020 Road Glide Special) was the lack of aftermarket support for the Indians. All the parts and accessories I like are only made for Harley and I like to tinker with shit. I've been on Harley's since 2006, wanted to try something different, the Indian just wasn't for me.
That was the other thing. No dealers and no parts.
Yeah, the Indians really want you to be in neutral when you put the kickstand down, otherwise it causes the ECM to throw a code when the safety switch kills the engine other than normal. It doesn't hurt anything, but you do have to have the dealer clear the code so the little light goes away. I did that with my kickstand once, just once.
@@roguecheddar Yes that is correct. The problem with the bike I had was a sensor though, even if the bike was in neutral it would kill the motor. Also it would not start if the kickstand was down, even if the bike was in neutral. They replaced whatever sensor was bad a couple times and it seemed to fix it after the second sensor was changed.
Motorcycles should not have to atone for the crap that car shut put out for over 100 years motorcycles take less from the environment to manufacture they require less resources to run 400 years the powers-that-be have demanded cars and that was fine when cars were cheap you had union jobs and gas was cheap Now cars are expensive you work for minimum wage and gasses out the wazoo they should have been promoted for their fuel-saving and space-saving qualities but they weren't the world is dying because of cars and people still will not get rid of them that's why we who ride motorcycles are the exceptional ones

Yes, Chicago (and traffic) SUCK. I have another 5 1/2 or 6 years until retirement myself. One of the last memories of my dad - the poor bastard got diagnosed with "stomach cancer" when he was about 30 - we were down by my Grandparent's (may have been my dad's "farewell tour", and his buddy, who was his Best Man at his wedding was talking with my dad) - I was probably only 3 - 4 at the time - and I heard my dad say, "You still have it?". My dad and "Rook" left, and when they came back, they were both on Harleys. I remember my dad plopping me in front of him (and with how WIDE I had to spread my legs for the gas tank), with "Rook" taking my younger brother. My Grandfather was a builder, and had several buildings - one that was 50 or 60 feet long, with doors on both ends - we rode through that building like going through a tunnel. My dad passed just before I started 1st grade, but I've always had a love of motorcycles. I bought my 1st new bike at 20 (a Yamaha) - I paid the 2 year note off in a year, and decided to see what all the hullabaloo was about Harleys - the dealer treated me like a piece of SH|T - an early 20's guy (with money in his pocket) - and they treat me like that? Harley talks up their "Dealer Network" - but I experienced it. Now, several decades later, my brother is on his (3rd?) Harley - he keeps calling me to help him fix broken stuff (stators and whatnot) - I told him to start looking at Indian - 80 to 90% of the Indian bike sales are to Harley riders
Yea some of the things you mentioned about Indian is what really ticks me off with HD...specifically the shift lever that slides over the pawl. I have a 05 ultra and the way they designed it and continued to use it when they know it’s a crap design and the only way to get it off and replace it is to take the whole primary off is why I get mad with them. They show, by leaving that splined with those little tiny splines, that all they care about is getting your money when it fails. All they had to do is make it square like they used to be.
Any opinions on their new challenger? Just ordered one switching from Harley’s after test riding the challenger and RG

I got a Road master with the upgraded 116. In the shop 5 times with electrical issues. ABS kicking in when driving, randomly dieing when riding. Dealership tried to play me as its my fault 😒 and it was my riding. After another shop look at it. starter issue. Needed to be replaced. Windshield raddles like crazy shortly after buying. Love the look but Polaris left quality control out the door. Worst part is I could of bought a Road Glide for 8-9k less and this was my first American dream bike and the reliability,dependability of my 2006 Suzuki M109R is better. Basic maintenance. The road master was in and out the shop the first 5 weeks,once a week. Then I went most the summer waiting on parts 🙄 while they hold my bike for any day now delivery. Love the new Dealership, but Polaris lost a customer with me. I will keep this bike but will not buy another. HD has its issues to I know but it will be the next bike I own, and another M109R. Lol

I cannot stress enough how much easier (and safer) everything will become when you get a good quality lift. The best $1200 I've ever spent was having my home shop floor saw cut, excavated 10", formed walls and bottom and lastly backfilled with concrete. My Handy lift sits flush with the ground. Don't even use the ramp since doing that. The only part that remains exposed when not in use is the vise. Also saw cut an 1.5" trench for the air line. But recessed or not, you'll hate the fact you didn't get a lift sooner. Stay away from the cheap crap though. I wouldn't trust my bikes on those things or me working somewhat under them

@@ProfessionalMonkey This is where you pay for a storage locker down the road for a month while the work's done. Move everything out, get the pros in to do the slab work, then when you've got the lift in place, bring your stuff back in.
ATV lift would work great. You could park the golf cart on it. Would be duel purpose use it for the pigs and the golf cart. Great channel love your content.
My dad thought my brother and I to ride about the time we turned 5 I made a mistake and purchase a new Yamaha in 81 it was stored outside he wouldn't let me keep it in his garage that's old school thanks for the videos.

If you ever get up to ride the Tail of the Dragon wheels of time is a short ride from there. A few years ago our local Indian Dealer had the demo truck and the organization I rode with was asked to lead the rides. So, I got to ride everything in the lineup that day. My favorite believe it or not was the Scout...(I rode a sporty for awhile) super spunky bike. The baggers seemed “sloppy” to me. A lot of plastic. Watched a BIG dude from one of the big MCs get his size 13 boot stuck between the heal toe shifter and take a Dark Horse into the ditch....scary but he and the bike were ok.
The idea of your boot getting stuck is terrifying. My bootlace years ago got caught on the brake pedal in traffic and I had to ride left foot down only for a few miles and that sucked enough.
Poor mans two into one. Cut off 90 or weld it shut. Instant performance gain and weight loss. Ride safe

If you decide to vent your crankcase on your limited I recommend looking into the Feuling vent dipstick, check them out on line. I put one on my street glide and really like it a lot. Btw my Amazon saddlebag reflector replacement will be in Tuesday, thanks for the info.
Great! Fueling had said they were going to send me one of those dipsticks to prove it was worth the $280, but they are so deep in orders they haven't sent it yet.

My 58 pan is fantastic it has hundred thou plus on it... I built it frame up in 04.. 😆 can't handle the thought of the price of new stuff then taking home and making it mine, costing enough to build 3 kool old skooters

Would feel exactly the same if I had experienced what you did with your Indian. I hate unreliability with anything.
I waited to get my Indian until 2018, after they fixed a lot of problems and built that $41 million paint facility.
Sorry you had so many problems with yours. I know some other 2014-2017 Indian owners who had problems. I haven't had any problems with mine, though.

Dude I would come down and clean that garage but it's a a lot of miles to get there lol, but I think you are right about Indian we need them to make Harley better but Polaris had some major problems with paint and electrical issues Victory had some of the same I almost bought one but I know Harley's and stayed true to the motor company you could of kept the Road King and been fine till the can tensioners went out🤑 and yes the postage is out of hand thanks for the upload

Harbor Freight has a reasonable dependable motorcycle lift. And it is movable with the bike on it.
Just looked, it's out of stock for a few weeks.
thats what i have, and as long as you use some common sense and strap the bike down, along with a few upgrades to the lift, it works great. trying to do a air conversion on mine this spring.

Hi! It was my GoPro Hero 9. I think it had been left on somehow. I've never done suspension, too expensive for me. Like $900 for shocks!!! I hear it's worth it, but I'd rather have a stereo.
@@ProfessionalMonkey If you are filming in 4K, you may try changing the resolution down to 2.7K. In either case, the camera is going to get hot if you film for an extended period of time especially if it is hot in your garage. You can also try a portable or even a computer fan running on it. Make sure you have plenty of open space and take it out of the case if you can. My bike literally bottomed out when my wife set on it so I don't have much of a choice with the suspension. LOL

Lastly, I can't remember how many people have talked about bad paint, corrosion, rust, etc. on Indian bikes.
I would love to try the Indian Roadmaster Elite (Red, Black, with 24k Gold trim) but I'm scared of it. It's too close to the price of even a CVO to risk it. Why risk it for $37K - $39K, when I can slide into a new CVO for $44K and be nearly 100% confident there won't be any paint issues? Why fool around like that? I've even considered paying the $37-$39K and then completely repainting the damn thing if it's a mess. Why should I have to do that though? As of today, I'm not doing that! There's a dandy in Colorado that I'd love to have but... why risk it? 116 ci custom performance, Rineharts, and more... but why risk it? Probably crack the throttle and stand that thing on its back wheel for a quarter of a mile! But... might have to start thinking about painting the damn thing in three months! That'll be a $3,500 paint job, minimum! Ohhhh, I'd love to have one of those beauties though. And then, three months later, be pissed off at myself for doing it... and for knowing better! I don't know...

People either want an Indian or Harley but you can get the same quality motorcycle if not better from victory but for way cheaper. I have a question. I want to start rv transporting. to get started I was going to do drive away RV. I need a tow vehicle and was thinking about using my Harley through the summer months as my tow vehicle. just wondering if you have heard of or seen something at some of the rallies you've been to tow a bike without a trailer. I looked on UA-cam and found videos with contraptions to do this but most are only good for 45 mph or dirt bikes. I haven't been able to find anything for a more highway cruiser at interstate speeds. if you're interested I have a 89 Electra glide sport. it's got a new 95 ci engine with about 7000 miles now. it had about 1500 miles when I got it last year. so I think it'll be a reliable bike for along time with just normal maintenance.
I've never seen anything I would personally use myself.

Sounds reminiscent of the unreliable AMF days of Harley Davidson. Agree, hope that Polaris makes Indian into a great MC organization. Harley definitely needs someone help lift its game, and not just put the nice fruit on tourers and CVOs, imagine a Softail with ride modes, electronic adjustable suspension, traction control, navigation and Bluetooth. Of course, we'll be seeing all these sweet goodies on the Pan America (it won't sell if it doesn't). Wouldn't it be fantastic is HD led the way in 2022 by migrating all this ripe and juicy fruit to the traditional models. Yeah!
