  • The human nervous system is extremely important in our ability to protect ourselves against threats, like an oncoming car or a growling predator. The nervous system responds through what is commonly known as the fight-flight-freeze response. Your heart rate gets faster, which increases oxygen flow to your major muscles. Your pain perception drops, and your hearing sharpens. These reactions are normal and keep us safe.
Sometimes, the fight-flight-freeze response is overactive. This happens when nonthreatening situations trigger the reaction. Here, we find ourselves constantly reacting to stimuli and feeling drained, commonly manifesting as anxiety, tension, reactivity, impulsivity, or conversely, as numbness, passivity, disconnection, and low energy.
Although you can't control when or where the fight-or-flight response happens, there are self-help techniques you can use to calm down and ease the symptoms.
