I personally think that learning 2 langs at the same time can help me enjoy more language learning. Some few months ago I was like "iM gONna LeaRn sPAniSh" And as I progress I notice that I was getting bored of the process but then I invited a new language, Japanese and it gave my learning experience more fun

Hi! I’m currently learning 5 languages at the same time (literally): French, Italian, Romanian, Catalan, and Portuguese. I already am a native speaker of Spanish so it’s very easy for me to understand most of these. For me the easiest ones are Portuguese because it’s just Spanish but slightly different, and Romanian since it’s the one with the most difference between all 6. 2:05 I totally agree with you. I commented on your last video about me learning German and Spanish simultaneously from zero in 2018 and how it didn't work out for me so I dropped Spanish. After spending 2 years in learning German alone, I recently started learning French. Learning the two languages is now much much easier after progressing with the earlier language (German). I want to learn both Korean and French at the same time, but it's hard because of school I barely have time to do anything aside from house chores, but I this year I'm gonna do my best to study both

Ive studied Spanish and Portuguese at the same time. Its hard at first, but eventually you learn to separate them. I think in the long run its better off done that way because now I can completely separate them UNLESS I hear the other spoken. Like if I am listening to Spanish music, I am going to end up speaking Portuñol if I try to speak Portuguese and vice versa.
Even native speakers struggle to separate them... I'd imagine it'd be extremely difficult to learn them both at the same time. In Brazil very few people can actually speak (proper) Spanish because it takes a lot of dedication to make your brain understand that Portuguese and Spanish are separate languages
They're very similar languages, so I guess you found it easier to study them together. Portuguese is my native language, and while I've never studied Spanish, I can understand them quite easily 😊

NO WAY Elysse I literally cut out the newborn baby analogy with languages out of a video the other day, I view it the exact same way haha I definitely have found for me the "don't learn 2 languages from the same family at once" advice doesn't apply so much, I found doing Spanish and Italian at once really helpful for both, but I can also understand how the similarities and connections that I found helped me improve both could cause others to mix them up... I really feel like (like anything in language learning) it's all a process to play around with and find what works best for each person individually as opposed to something that has a blanket answer. Same with how I like to have multiple languages per day in my life as I aim to have them as integrated into my life and a part of me as possible and when I've ignored languages for a while I find my confidence lost in those and just unhappy I've been apart from them. Overall I definitely don't think learning multiple at the same time is as scary as it's often made out to be, especially when you're in a position where some of the languages are in your life at school/work/in your relationship. A lot of it is just like in school itself, studying multiple subjects likely didn't set any of us too far back and in many cases probably assisted in the others, so why can't that apply to our learning outside of school? Then again this is all coming from someone who decided to do 2 degrees and 2 minors, so clearly I'm someone that likes to have a lot going on lol Love the video as always
That’s so true, I guess not all incorporation of languages is always “studying”. I watch media in Spanish everyday, same with German sometimes, but I’m currently on Portuguese!! I guess I just mean I don’t personally like mixing active study like drills and note taking and lessons. There’s an interesting point too, cause I often see so much overlap of principles between my majors and minors, so it’s cool to recognize stuff from other languages. I just wish they would stay in their own lane. And thank you chica!!!
I could not seriously learn two languages from the same family at the same time. I remember when I first started studying French and Arabic at the same time a couple years ago, people thought I was crazy! In reality the two are so different that it was actually fairly easy to switch my brain from studying one to the other. Even now, my top languages are French, Arabic, and Indonesian--all very different! Though I'm dabbling in Spanish and Italian as well, I'm being careful not to focus too much on them so I don't get confused, haha!
Wow! French and Arabic are a power combo too because they'll equip you quite nicely to travel to northern Africa if you want to :) My sister and I went to Morocco in 2019 (I speak French and she speaks Arabic) and although the Moroccan dialect is crazy we were unstoppable! With regard to your other langs, it sounds like a great lineup. Good luck :)
For 2021, I am learning two dead languages at the same time. Greek and Latin. For the two languages I decided to spend three days a week on Greek and two on Latin because I already have knowledge in Latin. As for modern languages, I am trying to become more accustomed to using subjunctive in French, the present perfect in Spanish along with eventually learning it's subjunctive, and I am also starting to learn Hindi. One thing that I have learned, in regards to learning other languages is to make sure each language you are studying is at a different level than another. As well as, separating the acquisition of each language by changing your writing style. Such as when learning French, I write in cursive. Where as in German, I nearly always write in print.
It's nice to have such specific goals and tasks in each language. and that's such an interesting point about writing style, it makes me wish I could write in cursive and try it out!
What makes learning my 4 languages at the same time (French,Italian,Spanish and French) easier,is that I have persons in my life who I speak to everyday that speaks those languages natively. I practice with them everyday, and they also provide their assistance and correct my mistakes. So just evaluate yourself and decide the best approach.
I've been studying German for 3 years and I LOVE the language i literally do it for fun. I've been wanting to learn Japanese for a long time. I'm starting by just memorizing hiragana and takana to set a solid foundation
I actually heard that it’s pretty smart to learn multiple languages because once you get past a certain stage you’ll be able to compare and contrast them. I am “learning” 8 languages too: French, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Italian, Chinese Mandarin, Portuguese, and Arabic. I have more experience with French and Spanish since I’ve been learning them longer. Naturally, some language skills are stronger than others but I’m good with Hangul and Japanese Kana. I know with most of them I will never be fluent but it’s still fun to learn. With the Romance languages I am learning I love being able to have a general idea of what something means because I’m already fluent with French and Spanish. I see Chinese Mandarin and Arabic as more brain exercises because they are the most challenging to me. Italian and Portuguese I just kind of threw in because I was getting bored with French and Spanish so I wanted the whole set lol. I watch a ton of East Asian films and TV shows so learning Korean and Japanese was just an added bonus. Even if I am not strong in them, I know what people are talking about without subtitles so to me that’s an accomplishment. I say all that to say, people learn differently and not everyone’s language goals are the same. If you want to learn 20 languages just because you feel like it then I say go for it. Obviously if you have plans to do something like relocate to a country that speak certain languages then your priority should be spent on that.

I can recommend the app Babbel. Or/and a good book plus spaced repetition flashcard app for vocabulary 🙂 and then peace by beace. Better slow but evolving.
I can't say anything about busuu German classes because I'm native German. But I can say busuu Japanese A1 class is awsome. Busuu Polish classes are very poor and I would not recommend them. Because there is no grammar and just vocabulary. Which you can't really connect because polish grammar is highly complex. For polish Babbel is my favorite language app. The quality is high in every language I have tried.

i studying german (main) and korean (little by little, lots of immersion!) atm, and im soooooo excited to build those up to a strong enough level to move on to portuguese, thai, or polish. i dont know which one yet, but the fact that there's a whole entire world of languages out there is highkey AMAZING to me
Great video! Blocking out time may be more effective, and it might work for some people, but I can never bring myself to do day-by-day switch-ups. I'm more of a "do what I want when I feel like it" kind of learner lol, so hardcore planning doesn't usually work for me. I can do longer periods of "focus" in one language versus another. This month, for example, I'm going to try and focus on my beginner-level Japanese (with my high-level Korean in the background when I feel like doing something else) before switching over to intermediate Chinese (with Korean still in the background). But in general, I just go with the flow. :)
True, I did that lax kind of approach last year for the last 6 months and I feel like I just wasn't good at holding myself accountable. It's good that you've found your shtick though, good luck!

Congrats on being such a young polygon! I’m 33, and native to English and Spanish, but I recently got into the idea of learning Chinese Mandarin, Hindi, Arabic, and Swahili, reasoning that this would allow me to talk to over half the world and in all continents/ major regions (Swahili is #1 African language, and high estimates by Harvard and UNESCO rank it at over 200M speakers, and I hope it can one day become the official African language). Of course, Russian, French, Bengali, Portuguese, German and Urdu all have good reasons to ask to be learned, but I feel that most people from those countries should know English, Spanish, Hindi etc.
Of course you CAN learn that many languages at the same time. But you will spread your self too thin. Fluency takes so many years to achieve. Dividing your time up across different languages only makes that process wayyyy longer. I’m not trying to put down anyone who wants to learn multiple languages at the same time. But you need to be realistic. Learning just one languages is a huge feat to accomplish.
Just remember Elysse (i believe) is studying a language based course at university so she naturally has a lot more time to focus on languages than say someone who has a full time job orare in high school. On top of that Elysse is clearly extremely talented and shes clearly hardwired be able to pick this kind of thing up a lot easier than most people. Dont get me wrong she clearly works harder than probably most of us as well, but I guess for her it doesnt feel like shes having to spread herself thin, even tho we would feel like we were
I appreciate this comment, but I don't hold what I say to be the ultimate truth of course. It all depends on what works for you. I don't think I would ever balance more than three at a time, from what I know about myself. If your priority is to learn a language as fast as you can, of course more attention is going to make you more successful! Thank you for your insight
Hi Max-- I study digital media at school, but I do have 2 minors in Spanish & American Sign Language! Therefore like I said in the video I do get a lot of language exposure just from school. And hey, I don't want you to think that my success in language learning is something you have to be 'hardwired' with-- I work just as diligently as any language learner. I might be good at memorization, but the rest comes from discipline! I just don't want anyone to think it's unattainable to be multilingual or that it's something genetic

I agree, I'm learning Spanish, Romanian and Italian and it isn't bad at all however I didn't start them all at the same time. Occasionally I add Italian words to Romanian but not often enough to drop one of them.

I agree with your perspective here! I want to make a whole video about studying with anxiety because... for me, learning multiple things at once is crucial to being able to effectively learn. Up until recently, I only studied one language but I was always working on or studying other things outside of that (instruments, academic fields, cooking, etc.) I think when I am only focusing on one thing, it makes it easy for me to enter into a spiral of thinking I should /always/ be studying and then I feel shame when I'm not. By introducing another language into my studying, I've already started to be more effective because I realize my time studying each language is finite and I need to make the most out of it, rather than slowly chip away at every waking minute. Not sure if that makes sense, but as someone with OCD (which can present similarly to ADHD), diversifying what I'm studying and learning is super beneficial.

Cool idea, I was dabbling in French and started to really enjoy watching French twitch streamers where as with my German, i'm still studying using Busuu and passed my A1 test the other day! I agree using different routines/resources is the way forward! Great video!
I’m studying Romanian, Italian, and Portuguese. Luckily my mind decided to let me tell the difference, it turns out a lot of people get them mixed up. For me, it’s easy to find the differences and not get mixed up. I guess I got lucky :p

I’m learning PT, IT, FR and GE together on Duolingo. What’s good about this is that Duo doesn’t teach you the same areas consistently in every language. For example PT lesson 1 would be traveling IT lesson 1 would be introductions FR lesson 1 would be plurals These aren’t actually the lesson 1 for each one, but they don’t overlap in the subjects. They do eventually later as they all will cover all the subjects eventually if that makes sense. I love it.
Same 😂 Spanish for 3 days(Spanish is mostly important) and Portuguese for 2 days. My 4 language would be Italian and my 5th language I’m thinking about either Swahili, German, Afrikaans, or Zulu 🤔

I liked your analogy about new languages being like babies, requiring more time and attention than languages you already have a higher level. It matches my experience with english (that I've been studying for a long time and already have a quite comfortable level, though I'm still not fluent) and italian (which I started to study in 2020 and I'm still at a basic level). My italian requires way more time and attention. I think I'll wait a little till I get a more intermediate level at italian, and then I'll start to learn another language.
I'm studying 6 languaged at the same time: french, russian, hindi, spanish, greek and arabic. Right now I'm studying deeper french and russian (grammar and vocabulary books, podcasts, Duolingo, music and movies), and the others I'm just learning the basics, getting a good base knowledge (same as above, but without using books or academic materials). All of them are brand new languages for me, except spanish, which I have already completed levels A1 and A2. Spanish also shares a lot of similareties with my mother language, portuguese (I'm from Brazil) which make things way easier. For me at least, so far, so good! And the best thing about learning new languages are all the cultural knowledge that comes with it! I've been reading, listening and watching things about France, Russia, India, Spain, Greece and all the Arab countries, and it's so amazing and enriching!

Am studying German and Italian at the same time because I read that studying a very different second language, helps the first language. Also want to holiday in Italy. My German is a lot more advanced than my Italian. Can do both languages in the same session.
the first two has been so important to me throughout my language learning journey, I've been studying french for about 1 year and a half and a couple of weeks ago I started with german, they're from different roots so I won't mix them up and also I gave enough time to be comfortable with my french level before going into a new language
I actually really like studying languages of the same family simultaneously! I know that most people don't, but I don't get them confused, so for me I find it really fun. But I think that you need to test it first before making a huge commitment. 😊

oh I dont know if this will help but daria at real Russian club here on youtube really helped me understand the Cyrillic alphabet (it is specific to Russian but it's a great way to start) she is great at helping you understand how to pronounce all the letters
I think that focusing on one language is the best option, but I have a strong incentive to study more xd. I'm gonna study 5 languages this year (including my native one xd). And I'm gonna dabble in Korean (I'll begin studying it maybe a few years from now). But yeah, if you don't need to learn more than one language, don't.

Swedish language is a mandatory at school here in Finland but I was super bad at it back then, now I'm trying to get back to it again. Kinda also wanting to study german and russian too since russian is so used in eastern Finland and german seems to be very appreciated at my career. What is getting in the way is my very short-lived interests because of ADHD so that's something I gotta fight with. I'll keep watching your videos, they seem helpful.
Good to know, Ellysse. I, on the other hand, chose to study two languages that are rather similar to each other, which are Mandarin and Tibbetan(they’re both tonal.) So I’ll work on Tibetan for six months and Mandarin for another six.
Wish I'd believed you on the spot when you warned people about beginning two languages at once. I've got two baby languages right now (German and Mandarin), and even two other ones trying to hatch (Russian and ASL), they're all so very needy. 😄 The fix I'm attempting now is to focus 100% one week (at least) on one baby language, forbidding myself to spend any time on any other language, because in the first stages it's tough and you need rapid progress to keep motivated. I've studied several languages before and I'd say German is relatively easy for an English speaker to learn. Both the grammar and vocabulary are pretty similar
My goal is learn multiple languages and obtain certification of fluency ie DELE, DELF TORFL, JLPT, HSK etc. I already speak Mandarin Japanese French Spanish. I also intend to learn Arabic Russian German Portuguese Italian Swedish Hebrew Greek Turkish Hebrew Swahili. I want to travel and see ancient and natural wonders eg Manchu Picchu, Masada, Petra, Pyramids etc. and enjoy making friends and learning about different cultures (food language customs) around the world. I'm a good student that multitasks well so I hope to be able to be successful with this. My undergraduate education is from MIT and I have a JD/MBA from BU. I also am a proficient trivia player that has been on Who Wants to be a Millionaore and hope to get on Jeopardy. Now that I've reached a certain level in trivia I want to diversify and achieve mastery of languages which has been a lifelong passionof mine since I was younger but which I could not focus on while in graduate school (medical law business) and gearing up to be a trivia champion. I know what I'm trying to do is difficult but I think it will be fun and if I work both smart and hard it is not impossible

For over 10 years I've learned so many languages (including my native language English- 10) and sometimes I've give Korean my attention for a day and then Spanish etc. But these are pretty good tips! I’m currently learning Kannada, French and Hindi at the same time. And all of this is because of school. Kannada is a compulsory language to learn since it’s my state language and French is my third language which is also compulsory (you can choose what language u want but I chose French) and hindi I wanna focus on writing and reading, I already know how to speak basic Hindi and I can understand it but I wanna know 100% of it.

I was getting frustrated because I wanted to learn German and ucranian but felt like if I was going to learn a language it should be spanish (I live in NW America ) so it's really great to hear that that kind of studying works from someone who actually uses it. I work really well switching back and forth, doing a little bit of this, then that, but I thought that would be too much if I was learning whole languages

I’m learning German , Spanish and Chinese ( but I’m pretty much higher intermediate in Chinese ) . I love Spanish because it has great music and my grandma speaks Spanish soo I have to practise with but I find it hard to find music and stuff I actually like to watch in German

If not one at a time, different language families and _especially_ different levels of comfort with each language are very good ideas. Otherwise, as you have said in the past, the languages "compete" with each other for your attention.
Tysm!! I really needed tips because now I finally have the money to use on different resources and have more flexibility now that I’m older!! I was learning many languages at once when I was younger (back in like 2020) but thought it wasn’t going to work, I wish I kept going 😭
Right now I am studying Thai and have been for a little over 5 months (since mid July). But in August when I had a choice to choose an elective class for university, I chose Mandarin because it interested me and my college does not offer a Thai course :( In my experience, I quickly realized that I would put all my effort into studying Thai through all sorts of mediums, and then when it came time to study Chinese I would not only have no energy but would also just not care to learn the language. I became a bad student and didn't really study the language, but rather just did what I needed to do to get an A in the course. Meanwhile, my Thai excelled and I still feel that I am growing exponentially each day. I relate to your point that you should not study two new languages at the same time, as for even right now the amount of attention that I give to studying Thai is too massive for me to feel comfortable adding another language. Tbh, I also think that I just never was passionate about learning Chinese either. But that is my only experience in trying to learn two languages at the same time, and for me it didn't work well LOL.
I feel like you can learn several languages at the same time, but learning a language like Mandarin feels like a language you need to focus all your brain power on since it’s one of if not thee most difficult language to learn for an English speaker. Mandarin is just so intimidating to me so I’m probably gonna start off with other languages first😅.
Awesome awesome... I am also an English speaker from a Portuguese speaking country in Africa. Portuguese is my official language. You are already a polyglot. English listening skills was one of the craziest part that made feel down and useless in the world of English. Why? Because I could not understand what a native English speaker spoke. Mainly those who spoke faster. In 2016, at my English school we received a couple from Tennesse in the US. None of us students could understand 100% what they said. The teacher chose me and two other colleagues to translate for them. One of these two colleagues was a primary teacher by profession. He could not understand the couple though. The wife was easier than the husband, for we could understand few words, but we could not translate, because we could not copy/understand the full sentence (lol). At the end of May 2018 I got a job in a company that I should use the English language for the ham radio communications, speaking with native English speakers from South Africa 🇿🇦. I went through the same challenge - lack of listening skills. But over time, through the my envolviment in the English enviroment, I defeated the challenge. I am now a good English listener. I can hear anyone regardless of their nationality. I have been watching UA-cam speeches of: President Barack Obama - my idol, Michelle Obama, Denzel Washington, Philip from Church of Christ Ministry in the US, Akon, Celine Dione, Kobe Bryant, many different UA-cam English teachers from the UK, US, NZ, Aussie and Canada. I used to watch other speeches/talks, vlogs of almost all English speaking countries. Actually I worked hard for the acquisition of English listening skills.
Several months after I started Hebrew I tried to learn a bit of German as well. It didn't work out too well because Hebrew was still a fairly new language. I felt like German was stealing time away from Hebrew. It was also a bit harder than I expected. Hebrew has been intermediate for a while, so I can listen to podcasts and watch UA-cam videos. That means my study routine looks quite different than it did as a beginner. That makes it easier to study multiple languages at once. In around October I got back into Icelandic. Since it's a language I've previously studied it's easier to study than German. I usually study 20-30 minutes a day. If it's a weekend I might study more. It can also give me a break from Hebrew without losing momentum or getting bored. I find it's easier to stay motivated when I can take breaks. I like studying one intermediate language and one beginner language at the same time. I can appreciate the progress I've made in my intermediate language and the novelty of the beginner language.
I personally think that learning 2 langs at the same time can help me enjoy more language learning. Some few months ago I was like "iM gONna LeaRn sPAniSh"
And as I progress I notice that I was getting bored of the process but then I invited a new language, Japanese and it gave my learning experience more fun
right! i feel so much more refreshed because i recently switched too.

If the languages are very different and you're at different stages then it's a lot more manageable to learn multiple languages.

Hi! I’m currently learning 5 languages at the same time (literally): French, Italian, Romanian, Catalan, and Portuguese. I already am a native speaker of Spanish so it’s very easy for me to understand most of these. For me the easiest ones are Portuguese because it’s just Spanish but slightly different, and Romanian since it’s the one with the most difference between all 6. 2:05 I totally agree with you. I commented on your last video about me learning German and Spanish simultaneously from zero in 2018 and how it didn't work out for me so I dropped Spanish. After spending 2 years in learning German alone, I recently started learning French. Learning the two languages is now much much easier after progressing with the earlier language (German). I'm studying French and I'm debating studying Korean or Japanese
Ive studied Spanish and Portuguese at the same time. Its hard at first, but eventually you learn to separate them. I think in the long run its better off done that way because now I can completely separate them UNLESS I hear the other spoken. Like if I am listening to Spanish music, I am going to end up speaking Portuñol if I try to speak Portuguese and vice versa.
Even native speakers struggle to separate them... I'd imagine it'd be extremely difficult to learn them both at the same time. In Brazil very few people can actually speak (proper) Spanish because it takes a lot of dedication to make your brain understand that Portuguese and Spanish are separate languages
They're very similar languages, so I guess you found it easier to study them together. Portuguese is my native language, and while I've never studied Spanish, I can understand them quite easily 😊

NO WAY Elysse I literally cut out the newborn baby analogy with languages out of a video the other day, I view it the exact same way haha
I definitely have found for me the "don't learn 2 languages from the same family at once" advice doesn't apply so much, I found doing Spanish and Italian at once really helpful for both, but I can also understand how the similarities and connections that I found helped me improve both could cause others to mix them up... I really feel like (like anything in language learning) it's all a process to play around with and find what works best for each person individually as opposed to something that has a blanket answer. Same with how I like to have multiple languages per day in my life as I aim to have them as integrated into my life and a part of me as possible and when I've ignored languages for a while I find my confidence lost in those and just unhappy I've been apart from them.
Overall I definitely don't think learning multiple at the same time is as scary as it's often made out to be, especially when you're in a position where some of the languages are in your life at school/work/in your relationship. A lot of it is just like in school itself, studying multiple subjects likely didn't set any of us too far back and in many cases probably assisted in the others, so why can't that apply to our learning outside of school?
Then again this is all coming from someone who decided to do 2 degrees and 2 minors, so clearly I'm someone that likes to have a lot going on lol

That’s so true, I guess not all incorporation of languages is always “studying”. I watch media in Spanish everyday, same with German sometimes, but I’m currently on Portuguese!! I guess I just mean I don’t personally like mixing active study like drills and note taking and lessons.
There’s an interesting point too, cause I often see so much overlap of principles between my majors and minors, so it’s cool to recognize stuff from other languages. I just wish they would stay in their own lane. And thank you chica!!!
I could not seriously learn two languages from the same family at the same time. I remember when I first started studying French and Arabic at the same time a couple years ago, people thought I was crazy! In reality the two are so different that it was actually fairly easy to switch my brain from studying one to the other. Even now, my top languages are French, Arabic, and Indonesian--all very different! Though I'm dabbling in Spanish and Italian as well, I'm being careful not to focus too much on them so I don't get confused, haha!
Wow! French and Arabic are a power combo too because they'll equip you quite nicely to travel to northern Africa if you want to :) My sister and I went to Morocco in 2019 (I speak French and she speaks Arabic) and although the Moroccan dialect is crazy we were unstoppable! With regard to your other langs, it sounds like a great lineup. Good luck :)

For 2021, I am learning two dead languages at the same time. Greek and Latin. For the two languages I decided to spend three days a week on Greek and two on Latin because I already have knowledge in Latin.
As for modern languages, I am trying to become more accustomed to using subjunctive in French, the present perfect in Spanish along with eventually learning it's subjunctive, and I am also starting to learn Hindi.
One thing that I have learned, in regards to learning other languages is to make sure each language you are studying is at a different level than another. As well as, separating the acquisition of each language by changing your writing style. Such as when learning French, I write in cursive. Where as in German, I nearly always write in print.
It's nice to have such specific goals and tasks in each language. and that's such an interesting point about writing style, it makes me wish I could write in cursive and try it out!

What makes learning my 4 languages at the same time (French,Italian,Spanish and French) easier,is that I have persons in my life who I speak to everyday that speaks those languages natively. I practice with them everyday, and they also provide their assistance and correct my mistakes. So just evaluate yourself and decide the best approach.

I've been studying German for 3 years and I LOVE the language i literally do it for fun. I've been wanting to learn Japanese for a long time. I'm starting by just memorizing hiragana and takana to set a solid foundation
I actually heard that it’s pretty smart to learn multiple languages because once you get past a certain stage you’ll be able to compare and contrast them. I am “learning” 8 languages too: French, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Italian, Chinese Mandarin, Portuguese, and Arabic. I have more experience with French and Spanish since I’ve been learning them longer. Naturally, some language skills are stronger than others but I’m good with Hangul and Japanese Kana. I know with most of them I will never be fluent but it’s still fun to learn. With the Romance languages I am learning I love being able to have a general idea of what something means because I’m already fluent with French and Spanish. I see Chinese Mandarin and Arabic as more brain exercises because they are the most challenging to me. Italian and Portuguese I just kind of threw in because I was getting bored with French and Spanish so I wanted the whole set lol. I watch a ton of East Asian films and TV shows so learning Korean and Japanese was just an added bonus. Even if I am not strong in them, I know what people are talking about without subtitles so to me that’s an accomplishment.
I say all that to say, people learn differently and not everyone’s language goals are the same. If you want to learn 20 languages just because you feel like it then I say go for it. Obviously if you have plans to do something like relocate to a country that speak certain languages then your priority should be spent on that.

I can recommend the app Babbel. Or/and a good book plus spaced repetition flashcard app for vocabulary 🙂 and then peace by beace. Better slow but evolving.

instead of babbel, i would recommend both busuu and pimsleur. You will read, speak, and write perfectly in no time!
I can't say anything about busuu German classes because I'm native German. But I can say busuu Japanese A1 class is awsome. Busuu Polish classes are very poor and I would not recommend them. Because there is no grammar and just vocabulary. Which you can't really connect because polish grammar is highly complex.
For polish Babbel is my favorite language app. The quality is high in every language I have tried.

i studying german (main) and korean (little by little, lots of immersion!) atm, and im soooooo excited to build those up to a strong enough level to move on to portuguese, thai, or polish. i dont know which one yet, but the fact that there's a whole entire world of languages out there is highkey AMAZING to me
Great video! Blocking out time may be more effective, and it might work for some people, but I can never bring myself to do day-by-day switch-ups. I'm more of a "do what I want when I feel like it" kind of learner lol, so hardcore planning doesn't usually work for me. I can do longer periods of "focus" in one language versus another. This month, for example, I'm going to try and focus on my beginner-level Japanese (with my high-level Korean in the background when I feel like doing something else) before switching over to intermediate Chinese (with Korean still in the background). But in general, I just go with the flow. :)
True, I did that lax kind of approach last year for the last 6 months and I feel like I just wasn't good at holding myself accountable. It's good that you've found your shtick though, good luck!

Congrats on being such a young polygon! I’m 33, and native to English and Spanish, but I recently got into the idea of learning Chinese Mandarin, Hindi, Arabic, and Swahili, reasoning that this would allow me to talk to over half the world and in all continents/ major regions (Swahili is #1 African language, and high estimates by Harvard and UNESCO rank it at over 200M speakers, and I hope it can one day become the official African language).
Of course, Russian, French, Bengali, Portuguese, German and Urdu all have good reasons to ask to be learned, but I feel that most people from those countries should know English, Spanish, Hindi etc.

Of course you CAN learn that many languages at the same time. But you will spread your self too thin. Fluency takes so many years to achieve. Dividing your time up across different languages only makes that process wayyyy longer. I’m not trying to put down anyone who wants to learn multiple languages at the same time. But you need to be realistic. Learning just one languages is a huge feat to accomplish.
Just remember Elysse (i believe) is studying a language based course at university so she naturally has a lot more time to focus on languages than say someone who has a full time job orare in high school. On top of that Elysse is clearly extremely talented and shes clearly hardwired be able to pick this kind of thing up a lot easier than most people. Dont get me wrong she clearly works harder than probably most of us as well, but I guess for her it doesnt feel like shes having to spread herself thin, even tho we would feel like we were
I appreciate this comment, but I don't hold what I say to be the ultimate truth of course. It all depends on what works for you. I don't think I would ever balance more than three at a time, from what I know about myself. If your priority is to learn a language as fast as you can, of course more attention is going to make you more successful! Thank you for your insight
Hi Max-- I study digital media at school, but I do have 2 minors in Spanish & American Sign Language! Therefore like I said in the video I do get a lot of language exposure just from school. And hey, I don't want you to think that my success in language learning is something you have to be 'hardwired' with-- I work just as diligently as any language learner. I might be good at memorization, but the rest comes from discipline! I just don't want anyone to think it's unattainable to be multilingual or that it's something genetic

I agree, I'm learning Spanish, Romanian and Italian and it isn't bad at all however I didn't start them all at the same time. Occasionally I add Italian words to Romanian but not often enough to drop one of them.
Nice video! I learned English and French at the same time and it worked perfectly, in many cases both languages helped me to understand better linguistic aspects from each of them.
I agree with your perspective here! I want to make a whole video about studying with anxiety because... for me, learning multiple things at once is crucial to being able to effectively learn. Up until recently, I only studied one language but I was always working on or studying other things outside of that (instruments, academic fields, cooking, etc.) I think when I am only focusing on one thing, it makes it easy for me to enter into a spiral of thinking I should /always/ be studying and then I feel shame when I'm not. By introducing another language into my studying, I've already started to be more effective because I realize my time studying each language is finite and I need to make the most out of it, rather than slowly chip away at every waking minute. Not sure if that makes sense, but as someone with OCD (which can present similarly to ADHD), diversifying what I'm studying and learning is super beneficial.

I’m learning PT, IT, FR and GE together on Duolingo. What’s good about this is that Duo doesn’t teach you the same areas consistently in every language. For example
PT lesson 1 would be traveling
IT lesson 1 would be introductions
FR lesson 1 would be plurals
These aren’t actually the lesson 1 for each one, but they don’t overlap in the subjects. They do eventually later as they all will cover all the subjects eventually if that makes sense. I love it.

I liked your analogy about new languages being like babies, requiring more time and attention than languages you already have a higher level. It matches my experience with english (that I've been studying for a long time and already have a quite comfortable level, though I'm still not fluent) and italian (which I started to study in 2020 and I'm still at a basic level). My italian requires way more time and attention. I think I'll wait a little till I get a more intermediate level at italian, and then I'll start to learn another language.
Give it as much time as it needs until you feel comfortable maintaining it!
I'm studying 6 languaged at the same time: french, russian, hindi, spanish, greek and arabic. Right now I'm studying deeper french and russian (grammar and vocabulary books, podcasts, Duolingo, music and movies), and the others I'm just learning the basics, getting a good base knowledge (same as above, but without using books or academic materials). All of them are brand new languages for me, except spanish, which I have already completed levels A1 and A2. Spanish also shares a lot of similareties with my mother language, portuguese (I'm from Brazil) which make things way easier. For me at least, so far, so good! And the best thing about learning new languages are all the cultural knowledge that comes with it! I've been reading, listening and watching things about France, Russia, India, Spain, Greece and all the Arab countries, and it's so amazing and enriching!

I think that focusing on one language is the best option, but I have a strong incentive to study more xd. I'm gonna study 5 languages this year (including my native one xd). And I'm gonna dabble in Korean (I'll begin studying it maybe a few years from now).

Swedish language is a mandatory at school here in Finland but I was super bad at it back then, now I'm trying to get back to it again. Kinda also wanting to study german and russian too since russian is so used in eastern Finland and german seems to be very appreciated at my career. What is getting in the way is my very short-lived interests because of ADHD so that's something I gotta fight with. I'll keep watching your videos, they seem helpful.

Good to know, Ellysse. I, on the other hand, chose to study two languages that are rather similar to each other, which are Mandarin and Tibbetan(they’re both tonal.) So I’ll work on Tibetan for six months and Mandarin for another six.

Wish I'd believed you on the spot when you warned people about beginning two languages at once. I've got two baby languages right now (German and Mandarin), and even two other ones trying to hatch (Russian and ASL), they're all so very needy. 😄 The fix I'm attempting now is to focus 100% one week (at least) on one baby language, forbidding myself to spend any time on any other language, because in the first stages it's tough and you need rapid progress to keep motivated.

I've studied several languages before and I'd say German is relatively easy for an English speaker to learn. Both the grammar and vocabulary are pretty similar
My goal is learn multiple languages and obtain certification of fluency ie DELE, DELF TORFL, JLPT, HSK etc. I already speak Mandarin Japanese French Spanish. I also intend to learn Arabic Russian German Portuguese Italian Swedish Hebrew Greek Turkish Hebrew Swahili. I want to travel and see ancient and natural wonders eg Manchu Picchu, Masada, Petra, Pyramids etc. and enjoy making friends and learning about different cultures (food language customs) around the world. I'm a good student that multitasks well so I hope to be able to be successful with this. My undergraduate education is from MIT and I have a JD/MBA from BU. I also am a proficient trivia player that has been on Who Wants to be a Millionaore and hope to get on Jeopardy. Now that I've reached a certain level in trivia I want to diversify and achieve mastery of languages which has been a lifelong passionof mine since I was younger but which I could not focus on while in graduate school (medical law business) and gearing up to be a trivia champion. I know what I'm trying to do is difficult but I think it will be fun and if I work both smart and hard it is not impossible

Interesting. For over 10 years I've learned so many languages (including my native language English- 10) and sometimes I've give Korean my attention for a day and then Spanish etc. But these are pretty good tips! I’m currently learning Kannada, French and Hindi at the same time. And all of this is because of school. Kannada is a compulsory language to learn since it’s my state language and French is my third language which is also compulsory (you can choose what language u want but I chose French) and hindi I wanna focus on writing and reading, I already know how to speak basic Hindi and I can understand it but I wanna know 100% of it.

this is great! I was getting frustrated because I wanted to learn German and ucranian but felt like if I was going to learn a language it should be spanish (I live in NW America ) so it's really great to hear that that kind of studying works from someone who actually uses it. I work really well switching back and forth, doing a little bit of this, then that, but I thought that would be too much if I was learning whole languages
Just take the time to figure it out and try some different approaches! I'm sure you'll find what works best for you in no time.

I’m trying to learn Spanish and German at the same time. I chose German to learn alongside Spanish to learn because the vocabulary isn’t similar so I’m less likely to mix them up

I’m learning German , Spanish and Chinese ( but I’m pretty much higher intermediate in Chinese ) . I love Spanish because it has great music and my grandma speaks Spanish soo I have to practise with but I find it hard to find music and stuff I actually like to watch in German

If not one at a time, different language families and _especially_ different levels of comfort with each language are very good ideas. Otherwise, as you have said in the past, the languages "compete" with each other for your attention.

Tysm!! I really needed tips because now I finally have the money to use on different resources and have more flexibility now that I’m older!! I was learning many languages at once when I was younger (back in like 2020) but thought it wasn’t going to work, I wish I kept going 😭
Right now I am studying Thai and have been for a little over 5 months (since mid July). But in August when I had a choice to choose an elective class for university, I chose Mandarin because it interested me and my college does not offer a Thai course :( In my experience, I quickly realized that I would put all my effort into studying Thai through all sorts of mediums, and then when it came time to study Chinese I would not only have no energy but would also just not care to learn the language. I became a bad student and didn't really study the language, but rather just did what I needed to do to get an A in the course. Meanwhile, my Thai excelled and I still feel that I am growing exponentially each day.
I relate to your point that you should not study two new languages at the same time, as for even right now the amount of attention that I give to studying Thai is too massive for me to feel comfortable adding another language. Tbh, I also think that I just never was passionate about learning Chinese either. But that is my only experience in trying to learn two languages at the same time, and for me it didn't work well LOL.
oh man. i relate to that last bit so hard about not having motivation for the school language, i was about fed up with my ASL course this semester!
I feel like you can learn several languages at the same time, but learning a language like Mandarin feels like a language you need to focus all your brain power on since it’s one of if not thee most difficult language to learn for an English speaker. Mandarin is just so intimidating to me so I’m probably gonna start off with other languages first😅.

Awesome awesome... I am also an English speaker from a Portuguese speaking country in Africa. Portuguese is my official language. You are already a polyglot.
English listening skills was one of the craziest part that made feel down and useless in the world of English. Why? Because I could not understand what a native English speaker spoke. Mainly those who spoke faster. In 2016, at my English school we received a couple from Tennesse in the US. None of us students could understand 100% what they said. The teacher chose me and two other colleagues to translate for them. One of these two colleagues was a primary teacher by profession. He could not understand the couple though. The wife was easier than the husband, for we could understand few words, but we could not translate, because we could not copy/understand the full sentence (lol).
At the end of May 2018 I got a job in a company that I should use the English language for the ham radio communications, speaking with native English speakers from South Africa 🇿🇦. I went through the same challenge - lack of listening skills. But over time, through the my envolviment in the English enviroment, I defeated the challenge. I am now a good English listener. I can hear anyone regardless of their nationality. I have been watching UA-cam speeches of: President Barack Obama - my idol, Michelle Obama, Denzel Washington, Philip from Church of Christ Ministry in the US, Akon, Celine Dione, Kobe Bryant, many different UA-cam English teachers from the UK, US, NZ, Aussie and Canada. I used to watch other speeches/talks, vlogs of almost all English speaking countries. Actually I worked hard for the acquisition of English listening skills.
Several months after I started Hebrew I tried to learn a bit of German as well. It didn't work out too well because Hebrew was still a fairly new language. I felt like German was stealing time away from Hebrew. It was also a bit harder than I expected. Hebrew has been intermediate for a while, so I can listen to podcasts and watch UA-cam videos. That means my study routine looks quite different than it did as a beginner.
That makes it easier to study multiple languages at once. In around October I got back into Icelandic. Since it's a language I've previously studied it's easier to study than German. I usually study 20-30 minutes a day. If it's a weekend I might study more. It can also give me a break from Hebrew without losing momentum or getting bored. I find it's easier to stay motivated when I can take breaks. I like studying one intermediate language and one beginner language at the same time. I can appreciate the progress I've made in my intermediate language and the novelty of the beginner language.
Novelty is refreshing! What an interesting mix of langs.
