The Koch brothers have over $60 billion between them. This election cycle they’ll spend nearly a billion bribing politicians. Now they’re mad that the internet has started pointing it out. Cenk Uygur, host of the The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"Scarborough To Charles Koch: "How Surprised" Are You About "The Level Of Vitriol Leveled Against You?"
SCARBOROUGH: I want to ask you something personally. Because Mika and I talked about this when we had spent a little time with Liz and you before, about how surprised you seemed a few years back at the level of vitriol leveled against you and your family, even Harry Reid calling you un-American. Something that we talked about on our show time and time again ... What kind of personal impact did that have on you and your family, and were you shocked by the level of vitriol?
Koch responded in part by comparing himself to church reformer Martin”*

If you're wealthy and you want to create more wealth, you create a non-profit organization where you can funnel money through. That way you'll get a tax write-off and you have influence in how that "donation" will be spent. It's a brilliant idea if you think about it. The present nonprofit regulatory system in the United States is neither effective nor efficient.

Fred Koch was the father of Charles and David Koch. Fred Koch was one of the co-founders of the John Birch Society. The John Birch Society worked along side with the White Citizens Council and the Ku Klux Klan in the 1960's by trying to keep Jim Crow Segregation laws in place throughout the South. JBS referred to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other Civil Rights leaders and activists as anti American Communists and race baiting community organizers. They paid off law enforcement agencies to attack and go after Civil Rights activists during protests. In 1964, the JBS along with the CCC and the KKK endorsed Republican Presidential candidate Sen. Barry Goldwater who ran on a platform of States Rights, Pro Segregation & Repealing Civil Rights Legislation.

The Young Turks are great journalists, along with Thom Hartmann of Free Speech TV.
We need to all wake up and realize that the government was put in place to promote the general welfare. I'm tired of this Libertarian garbage about the rich being entitled to more resources than the rest of society. I've never met or heard of a successful person that I couldn't investigate and find out had actually received not only help from family and friends, but also subsidies, grants, or other forms of financial government benefits. No one has ever "Pulled themselves up by their bootstraps".
So called "Libertarians" use the Postal Service, Libraries, Public Roads, COURTS AND LAWS that protect them in civil as well as criminal cases, some of them are even disgustingly hypocritical enough to use COMMUNITY COLLEGES and even FOOD STAMP and section 8 programs. My favorite libertarian clowns are the ones that live in their parents' basement.
Then they have the nerve to try to tell me that socialism always leads to communism, or that socialism is evil, or that the government does not function, or that without any socialism, capitalism will somehow balance itself?
They make these claims without even reading the history of the French and Russian revolutions, in which despotic plutocrats like Koch were run out of town on a rail, promptly following their tarring and feathering. They also have the nerve to tell me that in a "free" enterprise, in which I am powerless because I am not wealthy, I'll be treated fairly - I should just trust the corporate billionaires to do me justice without any laws of regulation being put in place.

      America is democratic.
What the Koch do is anti-democratic.
The Koch bros are un-American definitionally.

    •  9 років тому +5

Despicably Irascible Rapscallion How is America democratic? People get to vote (well most of them) between two parties that are controlled by the rich. The Chinese and North Koreans also get to vote. They may have less control over who they vote for but studies show the American people have very limited control over who gets to be on the ballot and who is showered with money and will thus have access to the media. People tend not to vote for someone they've never seen or heard of.

Stefán Örvar Sigmundsson Those are flaws in the system, but that's not the way the system was designed. The Koch brothers interfere with elections, plain and simple.

    •  8 років тому

Despicably Irascible Rapscallion I agree that the flaws are not a fundamental part of the constitutional framework of the United States. The two-party dilemma is the fault of FPTP and money in politics is the fault of SCOTUS.

Yes, of those who don't have it, those who consider themselves "temporarily embarrassed millionaires" remain blind to the warping caused by too much money, or at least the love of money, which is -- to coin a phrase -- the root of all evil.

If there was one thing the Revolutionary generation agreed on it was the incompatibility of democracy and inherited wealth. Our Founders believed to stop the cycle of Aristocracy, inheritance and Government Debt should not be passed on to future generations. Inheritance is a direct threat to a free Republic and One Generations debt should never make slaves of future Americans by passing the bill forward.
The states left no doubt that in taking this step they were giving expression to a basic and widely shared philosophical belief that equality of citizenship was impossible in a nation where inequality of wealth remained the rule.
By keeping large estates together for succeeding generations, the old system had served "only to raise the wealth and importance of particular families and individuals, giving them an unequal and undue influence in a republic" and promoting "contention and injustice." Abolishing aristocratic forms of inheritance would by contrast "tend to promote that equality of property which is of the spirit and principle of a genuine republic."
President Herbert Hoover had disdain for the "idle rich" and his strong support for breaking up large fortunes. Theodore Roosevelt, who was the first president to propose a steeply graduated tax on inheritances, was another: he declared that the transmission of large wealth to young men "does not do them any real service and is of great and genuine detriment to the community at large.''

This isn't just a problem with joe and mika, this is how establishment owners work with everyone, they and their friends own the stations via influence, ad revenue, or just being that all our media is in the hands of a few rich people. If joe and mika didn't play the game someone else would take their place who would play ball.
We need to get money out of politics, and money out of media and news, and government out of control of media, and to educate the public, before the system falls apart from the rot of crony capitalism. In other words, we're fucked.

Arguably more people in America would hate the Koch bothers (and all the other American super rich who promote tax cuts for the super rich) if they understood that the tax cuts from which the Koch brothers have benefited during the last 35 years, were mostly funded by debt.
Since 1981 (with the exception of the Clinton years), the American government has effectively borrowed money and handed it to America's rich on the assumption that they would invest the money in businesses that created jobs distributing the benefit to all Americans (increasing the tax base to repay the debt).
But tax cuts didn't work as promised. The trickle down dripped. No everyone had a boat to float in.
The actual return on the American government "investment" in the super rich has been the destruction of America's middle class.

A big frustration for me these days is this trend for people to be contrarian for no other reason than to be contrarian.
