    You can see Denzel Washington's character gaining admiration, respect and shared struggle with Tom Hanks's character by the second, in just the smallest of mannerisms and facial expressions. It's truly a remarkable acting performance and great character arc from a pretty outspoken bigot to understanding colleague and compatriot.

      He also received bigotry from Andy. Andy was in the big boys lawyer club shunning him. Both learn from each other. Both learn to respect each other

    This is so jam packed w/ incredible performances by all time great actors it’s easy to lose sight of how brilliant even the more peripheral roles are. Like Mary Steenbergen-her outstanding performance so perfectly brought that character to life in this...I absolutely HATED her guts. Cause she was so phenomenal.

    • @terracottapie

      She is remarkable in this film because she simultaneously oozes sleaziness of moral character, while also maintaining an air of utter professionalism in her surface veneer as a lawyer. It's very hard to pull that off. It would have been very easy to chew scenery and interpret this role in an over-the-top, visibly evil way. But her choice to be soft-spoken in her delivery makes her actions resonate as so much more repugnant.

      @@terracottapie Wow; how very WELL said. She truly was perfectly cast-but only because she so deftly pulled off that exact dynamic balance you described. Like she was born for it. I mean, what a brilliant turn as an actor when you bring to life such complex, almost contradictory character traits in a role, but with such balance and perfect subtlety that it ironically slams you right in the gut with the emotional power it exerts. Such an amazing, under recognized performance. For a film that already won the best actor Oscar, it’s crazy how it had at least four other performances that seriously could’ve also won it too-or for best supporting (she, Denzel, Antonio, and Jason Robards).
      You were remarkably succinct in how you articulated that big, difficult thought, distilling out of abstraction so clearly, yet also quite gracefully. It was really impressive; I’d say you read my mind, but you actually put that into words how I would have wanted to be able to lol. Probably comes to you very easily. Or that’s how it reads, anyway. My mother is like that as well (I write fairly well when I need to, but I hafta put a lot of effort into it. Always been jealous of people lol me you two).
      Anyway, just wanted to say that was very well done, Miss Terracotta, excellent wordsmithing. 👏👌You should write as often as you can.

      @@terracottapie I don't know if you only watched these clips, but you're totally off base. She was being professional in that she was doing what she was supposed to do to best represent her clients' interest. Right after this scene she expresses disgust at herself for the line of questioning. That totally refutes the notion she was sleazy.

    • @terracottapie
      @terracottapie Рік тому

      @@kommisar. I don't understand what you are arguing. I very explicitly said that it's a very nuanced performance, that she incorporates sleaziness and professionalism into her character, and it would have been incredibly easy to just go for "evil", but she went for "nuanced" instead. That is in line with everything you just said. How does that add up to "off base" to you?

    • @kommisar.
      @kommisar. Рік тому

      @@terracottapie What the hell is sleazy about her character? She's doing her job. Any lawyer worth even half her fee would ask the same thing. That is not sleazy. That is my point. I was very clear about that. Even if she hadn't uttered that line about hating the case, it still would have been clear she was just doing what she was supposed to do. I guess noble lawyers are supposed to allow the "good" side to win?

    To me this was an excellent movie. I lived in Philadelphia at that time, and I was in that court room before.
    To me also, Denzel was the real star of this movie, the hero, the one who should have won the Oscar.

    Charles Wheeler and his associates might not have liked Andrew Beckett because he was a homosexual, but it would be hard to argue that they didn't respect him, or at least respect his answer, when asked what he loved the most about the law.
    You have to think, when they were young lawyers, and idealistic, they too probably wanted to be able to bring about justice, or at least some of them, and Beckett's answer probably reminded them of that.

      There is none. Just another in a long list of things that make any actual lawyer like me despise this movie. It is clear that whoever wrote the screenplay never bothered to talk with an actual lawyer.
      Lost complaint on the day before the "deadline" and for the firm's "most important" client? Give me a break on all of that. Andy didn't save the document on the firm main frame or at least on his hard drive? Come now. And there wasn't a supervising partner in charge of the case? Come now. And there's no such thing as "most important case or client" with a venerable white shoe firm like this.
      In real life, this case never goes to trial. It would be decided on motion practice. And even if there's triable issues, the case gets settled. No way this firm wants the publicity. Hot garbage from beginning to end.
