Nice one Barry! I find that locally, boatman patterns to be particularly effective in the early spring (just after ice-out), haven't tried them in the fall though. Cheers!

Nice with the Moose and the Motu trout love them. Will try your pattern which looks nicer than a pure pheasant tail. Thanks from NZ.

Nice water bug pattern! I'll have to try this one instead of Chomper and Foam Corixa.

Nice fly, I guess tripped quill would work for the body too? Seems like a still water/lake pattern?

What a great video. I am new to fly tying, is there an alternative to Moose hair? Could you use Peacock eye?

Beautiful fly, well demonstrated! Does it float well if fished dry?
BTW: Your latest book is a winner! I've really enjoyed it and learned a great deal from the clearly written instructions and photographs.

Hi David, Thanks. When fishing it dry I don't coat the shell back with UV resin and I dress the whole fly with a dry fly floatant. Good to know that you are enjoying the book, good look with the flies.

Hello sir, always a super fun morning watching your video with my 1st coffee of the day. One of my favorite flies is Frank Sawyer's Original Pheasant Tail. simple and so productive. Quick question, I have a whole moose hide from the last hunting season and I'm just trying to figure out which part of the hair to use in reference to the mane. I am francophone from Quebec. You do such a great article on deer hair, is that something you will do for moose? It seems to me that moose hairs are very different, some are tough and some are just hard to work. I am addicted to fly tying and love to understand the nature and properties of materials. many thaks again. Have a good week

Merci Hugo, I have hunted caribou and black bear in Quebec a few times. Regarding your moose skin. You should tan or dry the skin first. Is it a bull or a cow? You can get some long hair from the cow but it depends on its age when shot. The mane on the bull is from the back of the neck, below the ears and down to the shoulder. There is also lots of other material from the body and from the hock, but its a lot of work...Good luck.

@@Thefeatherbender A big thank you, indeed a lot of work, the moose is a big bull. I just finished tanning 2 raccoons, (looking for good patterns) I also have a bear skin and a nice deer skin to tan. With all this I will have material for a lifetime :). I hope one day to also have the opportunity to visit your beautiful country. good day!
