Another anime adaptation that was apparently disliked by the original mangaka was the 2001 Fruits Basket anime. She didn't like a lot of changes made such as turning Shigure into more of a comic relief character. She was more involved in the 2019 anime.

Then there was the big plot point that I think might have tipped over the mangaka. Akito's gender reveal. The 2001 anime just outright made him a dude when in reality, Akito's masculine look was to assert authority and respect from the Sohma family. This has more or less the trope of women dressing or passing off as dudes to be taken seriously in whatever field or situation they're put in. By making Akito a guy, that shuts down some of the trauma that she has that made her into she is now.

The answer is already out there,
Yamaga (prior CEO of Gainax) is a liar you shouldn't trust.
Anno caught up with the manga so the last couple episode deviated until the final episode which was released the week of that chapter,
time wasn't on there side so hence redraws the manga, this all came out in the Kare Kano Bluray Interviews which I had someone translate 2 years ago on Rikki's Buy me a coffee page.
They couldnt finish the play because it was not written Kare Kano was a monthly manga it was ages away from an ending.
There's also no evidence outside Yamaga the author hated the work her own interview on the matter doesn't give that impression.

16:39 As a girl, I think the reason why you see a lot girls going out with old, smelly adults in shoujo and media is because authors are appealing and kinda taking advantage of the common girls' hopes for validation. Teens may think that by acting grown up or by being treated as an adult by an actual adult, will give them the love and respect they seek.
Another thing is that kids tend to confuse admiration for love, so I think they are also appealing to the trope of kids having crushes for role models because it may be a type of "love" that teens have experienced before.

    • @CamilaLopez-bx7fq
      @CamilaLopez-bx7fq Місяць тому +18

I think people often forgets that not so long ago, teens going out with adults was a common ocurrence and not frown upon, specially in certain countries, such as Japan. Most parents would find big age gaps normal, specially if the dude had money and prestige

    • @Kanaleah
      @Kanaleah 16 годин тому

@@CamilaLopez-bx7fqFrowning upon larger age gaps is very much a modern phenomenon. Western culture up until the turn of the 20th century generally saw 14+ as a valid age for courtship. A Bar Mitzfah/Bat Mitzfah was a Jewish ceremony celebrating the age of adulthood...at 13.
I don't purport to know what is truly right or wrong, I'm far too old and generally only interested in men older than me, but the idea of these ages being too young is very new, historically speaking. Morality is not totally objective and changes with the passing of many generations.

@@Midorikonokami Just because a work delved into complicated topics doesn't necessarily make it great. @@Midorikonokami yeah that sounds like a kneejerk reaction. you are blind to the manga's faults just because it exploits serious subject matter. i like the anime and manga a lot but that only helped me realize how flawed it really was, even back in the day. the resolution of arima's arc was grossly unsatisfying. its just another case of tragic backstory stretched along for the sake of maintaining suspense, treated exactly as a soap opera or cheap TV drama. the required due diligence of the author to research and explore what truly happens in these cases of child abuse simply aren't there.

    • @aimee9478

@@lamhamzzzzzz You've expressed this better than I did. Exactly, Arima's trauma is treated as a soap opera, and the story ends with him still being painfully reliant on Yukino, which was his problem in the first place. There's an implication that since they're married and with kids, his dependency somehow gets a pass now.
And don't get me started on how his biological father is treated leagues better than his biological mother by the cast and the narrative because he 'just' abandoned him with a person who never wanted him either rather than physically abused him.
Or how Arima's r**e of Yukino (resulting in a sudden pregnancy on top of that) is dismissed with a slap on the wrist because uwu poor thing already hates himself so much, and she decided to have the baby anyway, so it's seemingly a-ok. Or how it's Yukino who's described to have challenges as a mother due to her innate perfectionism, but her severely traumatized husband is a flawless father somehow outside of not spending a lot of time with the family.

I feel like the problem is that a lot of Japan doesn't like it when something doesn't follow the standard rules of other things. People tend to like comfort and not much changing the formula. You'd be surprised that Japan doesn't like Chainsaw Man's anime because it is "too weird".
Most every day Japanese people don't know what Kare Kano, Cowboy Beebop, FLCL, or any of the other anime that westerners love and hold dear. They are not popular even though you'd be hard pressed to find someone outside of Japan who doesn't think these are masterpieces.
There are of course fans of these shows, but they're fringe. Eva was the first "weird Anime" to really garner general popularity which is why it was such a big deal I think.
I'm positive the author didn't like the tone of the anime for Kare Kano because it's not, well, what you'd expect from a Shojo adaptation. Ironically though, because it's different I'd argue, it's actually special.

The whole major age gap thing had a been a common/popular trope in shoujo manga/anime back then. It's rarely used now due to things brought into light of how toxic and unhealthy it is in reality (the new take on Sailor Moon is an example of fixing the age gap issue between Usagi and Mamoru of going with the times now).
How relationships were done in Kare Kano, shows the age and era of manga/anime.
As for calling the manga grew to more of a soap opera down the line, I think if I recall the Manga Ka did say that she liked soaps. So if my memory is correct, your comparison is validated likely here.
As a fan who read the manga first, do I like more than the anime?--Yes.
However do I hate the anime?--No.
    Do I dislike the anime?--No.
    Am I neutral?--Yes
Despite loving the manga more, do I recognize the faults in the manga itself?--yes.
However, do I still love it considering the era it came out in?--Of course!

To set the record straight on Sailor Moon, there was only ever a fucked up age gap between Usagi and Mamoru in the 90s anime and I'm not sure we ever got a reason behind the bizarre change. In the manga and in the reboot, they're only roughly two years apart. Sadly the incest problem is still present and accounted for since an entire antagonist is built from it, and there's of course the concerning physical age gap between Pegasus and Chibiusa, considering her body was still stuck as a wee child during all of that arc. However, please remember when using Usagi/Mamoru as an example for problematic age gaps that it was only in the 90s anime, not in the original and thankfully not the in the reboot.

In regards to your comment about how some of the relationships "aren't the healthiest by today's standards" like...isn't that the whole point of the story? The problem isn't the age of the manga, it's the fact that people have this expectation that relationships in the media they consume be these perfectly pure things and not at all problematic, so when a piece of media *does* have problematic or unhealthy relationships, they immediately dismiss it or ridicule it instead of evaluating it critically.
      Spoilers below...
Like...the whole point of the story is that Arima is the second or third generation of a cycle of abuse, and the result of his mother raping his father. His whole story arc is about breaking that cycle of abuse, which he's able to do due to his relationship with his adoptive parents as well as his relationship with Yukino, but his relationship with her is also something that he has to come to terms with because while he's struggling with his mental health and his past and in the mean time she's this perfectly normal girl from a perfectly normal family. Her name even translates to "of snow," which you could argue is symbolic of her purity, especially in relation to Arima. This is something that you see weighing heavily on him, and all of this is also why Yukino was worried about telling him she was pregnant and didn't want to tell him at first, because she knew that, especially given the circumstances, he might freak out given his past. You can see this theme in the dynamics of some of the other relationships as well, such as the friends who end up dating whose past involves one being a bully and the other being her victim.
It's not that the series didn't age well, or that the relationships aren't the healthiest by today's standards, it's that the anime adaptation (and the western marketing for the manga, for that matter, considering the fact that Tokyopop labeled it as "romance comedy") insisted on making a comedy out of a manga series whose whole plot is about exploring cycles of abuse and unhealthy relationships.
It's not exactly like the Kare Kano manga (or, if it ever got made, its remake) is unique in being an actually dark series that lures you into a false sense of security with a happy/ funny beginning. That particular trope is a staple of anime and manga. What we're ultimately dealing with is the equivalent of if someone took a manga version of, like...Madoka, and then only adapted the earliest parts of it and then diverged in order to turn it into a completely normal magical girl series.

The manga was shoujo romance with comedic elements, while the anime pushed closer to romantic comedy territory. This situation reminds me of Fruits Basket, which was directed towards more comedy, but didn't quite go as extreme as Anno did. It felt like Anno wanted to tackle a different genre, but his style conflicted too much. In manga liner notes, the mangaka admits to liking age gaps, but that final one is a bit much.

Kare Kano was an anime/manga that i followed closely in high school. I remember waiting and checking Borders Bookstore often for when the next volume would release.
I dont think we need a remake of Kare Kano or a continuation, its fine the way it is as an introduction to the story as the anime where you finish the story as the manga. I felt like the anime did follow the manga pretty closely except for the last few episodes where it just went off the hinges.
The first part that the anime covered was basically Yukino's story, very light hearted because she came from a good honest family, probably what many would consider to be an ideal image of a family whereas Arima's story, the second half of the manga was the complete opposite. It really broke into trauma and how it holds you through life. You can mask it as much as you can but eventually the mask comes off either due to fatigue or reintroduction. The fairy tale ending was that their trauma essentially gets resolved and everyone moves forward, that doesn't really happen in real life.

I cannot describe how deeply it affected me, I watched the first episode over so many times, desperately wanted to dress like Yukino, and named one of my first OCs Yuki. From what i remember, there was controversy when the manga author goes dark for the sake of being edgy with the male protagonist Arima, having sex and going the pregnant route and stuff XD...you know, the tipical shoujos shenanigans, anyway you can see in the anime Anno was building the "bomb" in the latest eps, but Anno dint like that route because it made the female protagonist kind of "i can fix him" too early... witch is normal psicology, but knowing Anno and how he build the series and Yukino so far, and Evangelion and Nadia and yes it was a guy directing girls stuff... was anticlimatic and honestly ( i read the full manga btw) he was right. That not means the manga was bad , it just was not something for delicate and innocent shonen minds XD jk jk... Anyway, the first 4 ep were an amazing artistic achivement, there is nothing except Utena that came close on how to "make" a shoujo. On the modern ones, maybe Kimi no Todoke come close, but without the punch. The rest eps were great Gainax style with an inconcluse ending. It was a good idea giving Anno the series? hell yeah!!! its was gonna end in disaster? Hell yeah!! But man what a ride for those first 4 episodes.

I got into "Kare Kano" after meeting Veronica Taylor (English voice of Yukino) at a convention last year. She signed my "Pokémon" DVD, and as I was complimenting her work on "The World of Narue" and "Emma: A Victorian Romance," she said I might like "His and Her Circumstances." I started watching it on UA-cam a couple of months later, and yeah, the show (and the dub) were really good!
I'd definitely say I liked the first half more than the second half. Not that I didn't enjoy parts of the second half, I could just really tell the people making it were spinning their wheels after running out of manga material to cover, especially with the extra recap. (I did dig some of the artistic choices, though, like how, at one point, one of the paper cut-outs was set on fire.) 😂
As for the mangaka's feelings on the subject, I haven't read the manga yet, but I agree with your takes. I enjoy the show's sense of humor, but the romance between the two leads is what hooked me to begin with. I appreciate that it doesn't take long for Yukino and Arima to get together and how they acknowledge their faults yet inspire each other to live as their true selves. (And how their character development comes from figuring out who their true selves even are.) All this really makes me wonder how serious the manga got in tone for the author to think the anime was too goofy. I heard something similar happened with the original "Fruits Basket" anime, which is why Natsuki Takaya wanted the reboot to be made by a whole new studio, staff, and voice cast. The production of "His and Hers" sounds like a more extreme version of that. 😅
All in all, it's a great show. If you like older anime or rom-coms with a touch of an edge, I recommend it despite its shortcomings. Anno may be riddled with angst, but he has talent. This is from someone who hasn't seen "Evangelion" yet.

KareKano on the other hand is on point at the amount of excitement, happiness, sadness, shocking, and at times mundane, the peacefulness, and the quietness I had back in my high school days. I find myself more relatable to characters in KareKano than LoveIsWar simply on the premises of personality flaws and darkness, and the family dynamics shown in the KareKano is just something I wished I had at home. And the music in KareKano… omg!

The Gainax problem was never money, it was drama within the studio, drama which lead to constant staff rotation, every 5 to 6 years, like clockwork, most staff leave, get replaced in a mass recruitment wave, then that group also leaves roughly after 5 or 6 years, I mean Japanese workers can put up with a lot, but even they have a breaking point. Which hints to the real problem, the people in charge, turns out it was their fault all along, even Anno himself finally had enough and left. We were all completely unaware of at the time (even the Japanese Otaku were unaware and they usually are the first to find out). But we all know that now, especially so given what has come to light in the past decade.
Also, we need to keep in mind that firstly, the anime did catch up to the Manga, at the time the Manga was still very much in it's full run and it was still very good, which is why it was popular and why it got an anime to begin with and like with most anime of that time period, it caught up to the manga, so they had to do a lot of filler until the manga progressed again past the anime; An infamous example being Full Metal Alchemist where instead of waiting, they studio just went ahead and made up their own story and deviated completely off from where the Manga left off and just went off the rails story wise; Considering that Brotherhood covered everything that was covered in the FMA over 20 episodes in just 10 episodes just shows that FMA's production was "let's follow the manga 100% because if we don't we will overtake it," which they did but the parent company told them to finish and it wasn't great... hmmm what else had this issue, oh yeah Game of Thrones...
So, yeah back in the day you either went ahead and deviated and produced something bad, or you make filler episodes... So yeah, considering the norm in the west is to make stuff up when you overtake as opposed to delay tactics, it is plainly obvious which direction has better fan reception.
Also the relationship between Yamaga and author was, well, there wasn't any at the time (again he is a liar), which is implied, we still don't know the truth of the matter, all we have is Anno's side of the story and from what he has said it does seem to be the case, her involvement was very much on the licenced royalties side of things involving the heads of Gainax and the network, so her say didn't count for much, wouldn't be surprised if it was between the company who publishes her work and that of Gainax (this is likely closer to the truth because this is often the case with most things), (in my opinion Yamaga's statement was simply a passive aggressive swipe at Kano, but that's my opinion, again a lot of drama happened at Gainax). The anime's cancellation was 100% a joint decision between Gainax and the network, that being TV Tokyo, namely because of constant complaint letters, bad ratings and the slow pace of the Manga, they had caught up to the Manga and were now starting to make stuff up, while weaving the actual Manga story into the anime where they could, the the fact the anime was doing poorly was simply an excuse to cut it off there.
A lot of the author's dislike is from *after* the anime finished and has been something of a recent thing and I agree that I think it had nothing to do with the art style, but the inclusion of made up anime only story as well in my own opinion. Considering that the soap opera direction which the manga took happened after this anime cancelled, so it possibly may be a result of this anime that the manga took such a drastic turn for the worse, we'll never know, it's a best guess I can make if anything, keep in mind soap operas were all the rage in the 90s so it may be a case she was trying to cash in on that by trying to stand out as sales declined, considering how competitive romcom manga was back then (seriously romcom manga was the isekai of the 90s). All the facts are now out there, I mean Gianax's dirty laundry has been revealed under a spotlight over the past 10 years as various truths have been revealed, especially in wake of the lawsuit. Also Anno has come clean with everything now that there is no risk of anyone coming after him legally or it having any effect on him in doing so by revealing the truth. So speculation can all be tossed aside in this regard. Gainax doesn't exist anymore, Anno now owns everything and Yamaga has zero power, guy is now scraping by doing commissioned work from Square Enix, so he can't threaten Anno, or anyone legally for speaking out. As for the Author, all she has said is that she didn't like the anime and this was years after the anime finished and she never elaborated to the reasons. That's the end of it.

I was more satisfied with how the manga went than most, but I do agree that there's a lot of whiplash when you've been expecting Arima to have secrets on the same level of Yuki's hiding her true self and what gets revealed is on such another level that the couple loses the balance they had.

Fruits Basket is one of the best Shojos, but then it feels awkward when you find more about Tohru's parents. I think it’s because the guy is older and mature, so the girls would feel they are taken care of because it’s either daddy issues or a lack of positive male role models.
I know I do. I used to read them to and thought nothing of it until I got older. It took me 10 years after reading Cardcaptor Sakura to realize many of the relationships are so wrong. The ones that were healthy were Toya and Yukito and of course Sakura and Syaoran. Even the girl Chiharu who does have a boyfriend who’s the same age as her was not healthy. The boy is technically a pathological liar who loves messing his friends, and she is abusive towards him.
It’s kinda a reverse with older men obsessing over young idols because they treat them like their daughters. (It’s something I learned) Most of them admit they aren’t in love with the idols, but they want to support their careers and buy merch. And unfortunately, what’s the point of buying photos and not look at them. They do meet ups and hand shakes like a dad who wants to say something proud to their child. Only the crazy ones are the ones that stalk and would cause harm to the idols if they don’t match their fantasies, such as dating someone.

@@j.2512 I would say that kids, teenagers and young adults as a whole are more likely to fall in love with people older than them, because they are attracted to perceived stability, intellect and wisdom of them. Boys are as likely to fall in love with their teacher as girls. We crave mentorship and feel special when we are noticed by people who we think of as smart and wise.
It is normal for a kid to have romantic interest in older people, but it is not normal when it is reciprocated. And it is much more likely, statistically speaking, that a man would act upon it when learning of that infatuation (towards both genders). That's where Clamp fails with their "love transcends age and is always pure" BS.

I’ve wanted a reboot to the anime for years. I didn’t exactly hate the anime, but I wish it was more like the manga. I want a reboot ala Fruits Basket style. New style, new director, and overseen by the mangaka. I want it more than anything.

I'm an anime only Kare Kano fan and had been in awe at that anime since I was basically 10 years old (I never watched Eva). I haven't rewatched it in a decade since I still got my fill of it from fond memories of it. Will probably read the manga whenever I get a time for it.
And tbh, I liked the anime. It was a bit too mature in terms of exploring the relationship of the two main leads for my 10 years old brain, but it was so interesting to me that it made me excited on watching next episodes of it. Truth to be told, the last 3 episodes did took me out. And the abrupt ending made my brain concoct a fanfic just to make me think that series has an ending lol.
I'll still believe that the author didn't fully imply on hating the anime adaptation though. Artsy and controversial it may be during its time, I still think the author is still okay with it.. (referring to what @/soundsofsoundsof said)

Kare Kano was similar to multiple other shoujo manga of the time. It was a period where romance manga needed to have perfect characters marked by tortured pasts. In at least a couple, the main guys have to force themselves on the main so she can "save" them. It's long standing in western romance novels as well. I'm not exactly a fan but it was what was available when I was a teen.

I watched a ton of this when a lot of episodes were gifted to me by one of the English voice actors back in 1999/2000, fell in love with it. Then in Otakon 2000, I watched basically the marathon of it in one of the theaters, absolutely bawling at the later episodes where the tan surfer looking kid showed flashbacks of how he was bullied for being fat, and said bully ended up falling for him romantically. I was a moody 16 year old.
