Fun Fact: The woman speaking to Jamie in the scene that plays from 8:34 to 9:36 is Pauline Collins, better known for playing Queen Victoria in the episode "Tooth and Claw" in 2006. In that episode, Queen Victoria meets Rose Tyler and The Doctor, who introduces himself as "James McCrimmon".
I think my favorite aspect of the duo that was The Doctor and Jamie was that they seemed to be on equal ground. The Doctor never looks down on Jamie and Jamie is never really in awe of the Doctor, despite one being a Time Lord and one being a Highlander. No other companion, especially at that time, has really captured that again
Great to see you back again...I somehow missed this explanation of Jamie's character. It is wonderful . Melbourne is in lockdown so You have rescued me once again. Who would have thunk it ??? Cheers Carol
I do think that number 10 and Donna Noble had great comedic chemistry that was quite similar and definitely a very close second. Coincidence as well when you realise they also both had similar fates.

I loved hearing his story about how he developed his Troughton impression at conventions where he would do that thing where he cups his hands together and say “well you see Jamie” in one of the behind the scenes material in one of the Companion Chronicles.
The companion that made the standard for all future Doctor/Companion relationships I always felt Jamie has one of the most tragic endings. He loses the memory of his best friend, his first love, the girl who was like a sister to him and also the skills and advancements are all forgotten.
I appreciate that the 60th specials included the 'memory Tardis' shorts which reunited Jamie's and Zoe again, they'd lived good lives, and they FINALLY got their memories back. I may have shed a tear or two. Plus, I love the idea of Jamie living happily ever after as a laird and father of 5 daughters. Given Zoe, even with her memories erased, named her son James I feel it stands to reason his daughter's are called 'Polly, Samantha, Victoria, Zoe and Astrid (or Anne!)' 😁

I wish they had brought him back for the new series in some way. Maybe the Tardis could’ve landed in Scotland in the 1790’s when Jamie would’ve been older, and despite not knowing anything about the Doctor at the start, over the course of the story he would start to remember his previous adventures.
I recently listened to the three audio dramas with the Sixth Doctor and Jamie after watching this and had a wonderful time. I have truly grown to appreciate Jamie as a top tier companion over the years and those three stories really solidified it for me. Now I want to watch more of the Patrick Troughton era.
I absolutely love Patrick and Fraser, they are my favourite Doctor & companion team. The episodes even when mediocre are always enjoyable and fun because of the wonderful chemistry they had. I’d give anything to have more Troughton stories. What a Doctor he was, I still think he’s the definitive take on the character.
I won’t lie when I say that I’m not that familiar with Jamie, having only seen him in Five/Two Doctors, Tomb and Enemy, but from what I’ve seen he’s an excellent companion. The documentary here really does the character justice. It’s interesting how a companion from long ago could be so successful considering the careless approach I’ve heard some of the Hartnell ones endured.
You need to watch The War Games. It’s an epic 10 part episode that is the end of the second doctor as-well as the introduction of the Time Lords as a race. It’s a really cool concept that works wonderfully on screen and is one of my favorite stories of all time.
Just totally blown away by your analysis. Thank you for a wonder 1/2 hour or so. I can't make up my mind if I'd like the next one to be either Jo Grant or Sarah Jane, who along with Jamie, are my trio of favourite Companions. Thank you for all your hard work and the pleasure it gives.

It's fascinating how much Jamie changed during his run with the Doctor. He came in being a scottish highlander from the 1700s who grew up with no knowledge of the world and with a very primitive mind that reflected the primitive era of the highlanders. Throughout his run, Jamie became exposed to so much futuristic science, unworldly monsters, different eras of the earth, all kinds of people and many different living conditions and norms that by the end of his run Jamie had become a formal, educated and a more modern person with a scottish accent. The sheer difference in Jamie between The Highlanders and The War Games is just fascinating. And to make it all completely devastating, Jamie, much like Donna Noble, gets his memory wiped and loses all of that knowledge, wisdom and personal growth he had gained. He was transformed back to his former primitive self in the dangerous and bloody world of the highlanders. Jamie will always be one of my favourite companions of all time.
As always, a great documentary... I particularly enjoyed the fact that you managed to find that clip of him with Chaplin, which I hadn't seen before. I would have mentioned the fact that Fraser has appeared in more episodes of Doctor Who than anyone other than the first four Doctors... And perhaps a mention of the 'season 6b' idea which Big Finish are now expanding to explain some problems with the Five Doctors and the Two Doctors.
The idea of having the doctor screw up recreating his companion's face from memory as a justification for using a different actor for the episode is actually pretty clever. Kind of makes it a bit of a character moment
Yes indeed, that's been really a creative way to deal with the absence of an actor due to sick leave or whatsoever. And it fits well into the surrealistic story. When I've first seen that episode I really thought that was another test for the Doctor.
Richard, you are an utter blessing, great narrative and a superb voice, I love your stuff, quite honestly, you’re a very talented man, never forget lad. Another masterpiece 👌
I always loved the relationship between Jamie and The Doctor. There are some comics that collected comic strips from Doctor Who magazine written by Grant Morrison where the 7th Doctor meets up with a much older Jamie. He's been shunned by his clan for being crazy because he didn't forget his time with The Doctor, and he gets one last adventure with the Time Lord. If you can find the two books, they're definitely worth a read (I mean, Grant Morrison writing Doctor Who!). I love your videos, brother! I hope you do more of the Companions!
I’m so happy I got to learn more about Frazer Hines’ magnificent character. I had absolutely no idea he inspired “Outlander” That’s absolutely brilliant
Yes, me either, how bizarre! Wonder if Hines is aware, ladies man that he was/still is, bet he'd love it! I'm off to Google that Who's Dr Who single, lol
Big Highlander fan (Mackie?) here-- I never knew that! 😁 Edit: I should have watched before reading comments-- it's Outlander, not Highlander, that he inspired. Different series altogether!
Did my 5th rewatch of your videos while sat by the pool on holiday 😅. One thing I'd like to add about the two Doctors is I think Colin should get credit for being able to establish good chemistry with himself and Frazer. Couldn't have been easy after seeing how effortless Patrick and Frazers chemistry was.
I've been watching your DW films since you started uploading them. I really like the level of detail you go in to and always enjoy them. Glad to see you've moved on to the companions as there sometimes not as well documented as the Doctors. :)
Jamie is my favourite ever companion, and I feel like more show companions should be drawn in from different time periods outside of the present of the film
Anyone interested in jamies big finish stuff should also check out "the glorious revolution" which probaly has my favorite depiction of jamie as a character in all his appearances. Id also reccomend "the jigsaw war" as a really good jamie story as well.
Excellent analysis - a partnership right up there with Sarah Jane and Doctor 4 - never equalled or surpassed - the balance between the characters is spot on with some cracking japery which avoided being silly. I loved the dynamics between these two - the scene in Tombs where the Doctor and Jamie go to hold hands with Victoria to comfort her ; holding each others in error then realise what they have done and soon let go always raises a smile. As you said their pairing still ignites in The Two Doctors, although this story isn't too bad , it's their appearence which prevents it from flat lining completely - if only they had kept Jamie on in the 6th Doctors televised adventures then the execrable Trial of a Timelord may have been that more bearable. Jamie could have been the one to have, now and again, told Mel to calm the **** down when it was vitally needed. Brilliant stuff.
Author Diana Gabaldon’s ‘Outlander’ book series (book 9 to be published soon) hero Jamie Fraser, who was based originally on Jamie McCrimmon. ‘Outlander’ is now a successful Starz series having just finished its fifth season.
Wow! Another brilliant video to add to your already impressive body of work! I have only seen a handful of Jamie's adventures but he quickly became one of my favorites! I was excited and saddened to hear about the never made third yeti outing. Excited for what could have been for Jamie' and saddened even more about the bittersweet ending he got In The Wargames. Your videos continue to blow me away and I will always steer newer fans of Doctor Who in the direction of your UA-cam channel. Simply put..you are making the finest retrospectives on Doctor Who ever. Period. The End. Keep up the outstanding work brother! Take care and stay safe!
Another spectacular and scintillating success as Mr Carrier adds to his gargantuan gallimaufry of Gallifreyan goodness. Troughton and Hines' wonderful double act has the recognition it so thoroughly deserves. I am worried, however, that the Celestial Intervention Agency may want to ask some questions, given your self-evident depth of knowledge regarding the Doctor and fellow travellers.
Wouldn't it be awesome if they somehow did laird of the McCrimmon just in modern who? Like instead of it being a departure episode, the current doctor would meet jamie by chance, and then the episode that never was will have a chance to be. Would be a lovely episode to bring back Jamie's character and give him one last story. Could even have one of his children or grandchildren join the tardis at the end. Would be cool to have another McCrimmon on board. Also, with the whole universe reset thing that RTD did in the specials, i dont see why the great intelligence can't come back too. Or even fit Zoe into the story somehow too, so they can have a reuinion on screen. I mean the story outline is kinda there all you'd have to do is just rewrite it a bit. Hopefully one day who knows
Who are the 3 dislikes???... Really? Anyway, yet again another fantastic documentary! Unfortunately you have made a rod for your back because we just want to see more and more 🤣 Brilliant work!!
This is fantastic. I have been a fan for over thirty years and much of this is new to me. How did you do most of the research for this? In any event, you have spent a great deal of time - well done for the high production values and thanks!
No problem at all; you're most welcome! The primary research is gathered from the About Time books by Tat Wood, various programme guides I've gathered over the years, Doctor Who Magazine and their series of specials from a few years back on each Doctor and their 'In Their Own Words' series which is great for getting personal perspectives. I also use the David Howe book 'The Companions' for this series. Thanks very much for your lovely comments!
I first listened to the Sixth Doctor/Jamie audio trilogy just a few months ago and loved it! Especially 'Legend Of The Cybermen', which without spoiling it for those who haven't listened to it (Although you totally should) Is easily one of my favorite Big Finish stories ever. So glad you mentioned it in this video and great work as always! Can't wait for Part 11 of your review series (With the TENTH DOCTOR!) ;)
Important to note when talking about people from the past, they are not uneducated, merely not yet aware of what lies ahead in the future. Even if they have not been to school (ie from the middle ages) they are still 'educated' and would be knowledgeable or skilled in many ways that we ironically wouldn't be able to match today.
I haven't watched much of Jamie in the series but in a short span of time since I came to know his character last year I came to like and saw thst he is absolutely one of the best companions (if not the best.) Kudos to Frazer Hines! His acting is great!👍💖✨🎶 Edit: Please make a review on companions Victoria, Zoe, Romana II, Ace and Peri. Thanks and more power to you!👍✨
Jamie the first true "iconic" Doctor Who companion before Sarah Jane Smith. Looking forward when you do a video on my favorite companion, Ace. And I kind of like that song Hines made certainly beats Doctor in Distress.
As an American that has no cultural history regarding Doctor Who you have no clue how amazing your channel is. As a history nerd and newer Doctor Who fan tthis channel makes me appreciate the storylines as well as English Culture! Keep up the good work from ths Midwest!
It always seemed to me, whoever your favorite Doctor may be, that Troughton and Jamie set the tonal template from which all the best subsequent Who was derived. 'Friends in space' as seen again and so memorably with Tom Baker and Sarah Jane is ultimately the core appeal of the show and forever relatable given the human condition we each experience.
Found this documentary via a friend. Absolutely enjoyed it! Jamie is one of my favorite companions and you did a wonderful job on the background of his character. One question, do you know where the photo of Frazer and Wendy from around 18:00 is from? I think I've seen it before but not entirely sure. Anyway that was very enjoyable... Thank you!
@@cleverdickfilms Would have loved to have seen that! Upon rewatch I was thinking of Frazer's conflicting accounts of leaving the series. It seems in interviews around the time he was leaving he'd said it was time for a change, was looking into doing films, music... But in the more recent ones he'd mentioned he would have stayed on. To me it sounds as if both his agent and Patrick's decision to leave were influencing him heavily at the time and looking back he believed he would stayed if not for those two factors.
Bleh, I really never cared for her. At most I've come to tolerate her these days. Don't think I'll ever understand how some people can even remotely compare her to Jamie
Admittedly, I've seen very few of the stories he's in (for obvious reasons), but it really was a great dynamic. I've never heard of any of the actor relationships being remotely close (outside of Baker/Ward which was a different dynamic). The thing I think worked is they understood the difference between intelligence and education. Jamie was intelligent. The knowledge gap meant he'd never fully understand the details of every situation he was in, but he could think on his feet and come up with solutions to problems.
loved this loving, well researched history of Jamie. I think the videos you put out are top notch, some of the best Doctor Who histories/commentaries you'll ever find. Keep up the fantastic work!
I really like how you’ve handled this series so far choosing a companion from each of the different Doctors eras and though I don’t know the circumstances of you choosing who’s next I’d like to recommend fan favourite companion Sarah Jane Smith for the next episode as her character has a long history with the show and also the spin-offs as well great work with the video as always
Thanks very much! The focus for each companion video is chosen by Patreon poll but I've left Sarah-Jane off for now as I'm going to cover her a bit in my next main series video look at David Tennant's era.
Clever Dick Films Ok no worries I’m sure the Patreons will pick a great companion for you to review also I’m glad to see this series still going strong as it’s very interesting to learn more about each of the companions in a series that feels like they could be included on the official Doctor Who DVDs
What a lovely documentary. My only criticism would be that I would have liked to have seen more coverage of Hines' Big Finish stories, but it's a minor thing in such a thoughtful and entertaining video. Thanks!
Is that a Young Pauline Collins in The Faceless Ones? A scouse companion would have been perfect for the era.Although I suppose Jamie had somewhat McCartney-esque looks to go with his and Dr Pat's matching Beatle Mops.
Yeah, Jamie was definitely the best part of the Two Doctors and it makes me wish we coulda somehow gotten more stories that paired him up with Doctor #6 on TV Colin manages to channel just enough of Troughton's character to feel like there's still that affection there, without losing his own take on the Doctor -- and Jamie might be a little thrown at first but he isn't taking any of 6's BS lying down. Gonna go looking for those Big Finish sets now, at least :)
OHHHHH I knew she looked familiar! I just couldn’t place why!
I think my favorite aspect of the duo that was The Doctor and Jamie was that they seemed to be on equal ground. You never fail to deliver
Excellent, as usual with all of your stuff. Better than the official documentaries. Well done 👍
@@hgwells1899 He is aware! He actually guest starred in the show
@@hollyzandstra4413 Amazing :) Good to know there's life in the auld scot yet!
Big Highlander fan (Mackie?) here-- I never knew that! 😁
Edit: I should have watched before reading comments-- it's Outlander, not Highlander, that he inspired. Different series altogether!
Hope we get to see another episode of these at some point. You honestly make the best Doctor Who documentaries in the world
Have no fear! A video on the Brigadier is on its way!
@@cleverdickfilms Well... Here we go again
The 2nd Doctor with Jamie AND Zoe is my favorite Tardis duo of all time!!!
Love your videos!!
I always look forward to a new release by you mate. I know you take your time and put a lot into them and its appreciated as a life long Who fan.
Great stuff as always. As someone in the animation industry, I'd love to watch an episode all about the animated reconstructions of the lost episodes.
Excellent, really enjoyed it. The Highlanders audio is a favourite of mine. The chemistry is still there in The 2 Doctors
I don't really get Sarah's popularity. 🤷♂️
The best companion done by the best reviewer... this is gonna be good
I love it! Another installment in the "companion" series to your main documentary and it's featuring one of my all-time favorite characters!
Author Diana Gabaldon’s ‘Outlander’ book series (book 9 to be published soon) hero Jamie Fraser, who was based originally on Jamie McCrimmon. ‘Outlander’ is now a successful Starz series having just finished its fifth season.
In which Frazer Hines appears, I believe!
Clever Dick Films Yes he guessed starred in a season three episode as the outgoing governor of Ardesmuir prison.
My favorite Jamie scenes are when he takes the piss out of the Doctor, "Oh, I'm just admiring your 'diplomatic skill'." LOL
I think only Evelyn, Ace and Donna can even come close to Jamie. The first genuinely brilliant companion.
Who are the 3 dislikes???... Really? Anyway, yet again another fantastic documentary! Unfortunately you have made a rod for your back because we just want to see more and more 🤣
Brilliant work!!
The phantom pipers!
Excellent work as usual! These videos are always worth waiting for.
Your docs are always excellent and very informative! I hope this gets shared about so more people can see it and your channel can grow.
Well you've covered the most important companions from the first and second Doctors' tenures so I think it's pretty obvious who's next. Benton!
Can't wait to see which of the companions from the Jon Pertwee era will be profiled, maybe Jo Grant!?
Your channel is a calming and hopeful constant in the wildfire that is 2020.
We are getting new Jamie content in 2023 we are winning
Remembering how Jamie and Zoe had their memories erased, Donna's fate is still sad but not unheard of.
I haven't watched much of Jamie in the series but in a short span of time since I came to know his character last year I came to like and saw thst he is absolutely one of the best companions (if not the best.)
Kudos to Frazer Hines! His acting is great!👍💖✨🎶
Edit: Please make a review on companions Victoria, Zoe, Romana II, Ace and Peri.
Thanks and more power to you!👍✨
I just can’t get enough of these amazing documentaries!
Jamie the first true "iconic" Doctor Who companion before Sarah Jane Smith. Looking forward when you do a video on my favorite companion, Ace.
And I kind of like that song Hines made certainly beats Doctor in Distress.
Badre Bally imagine if Sarah Jane and Jamie had meet. That would be a very interesting what if.
@@nathantew946 that would have been great
I remember the Doctor getting Jamie's face wrong. And Jamie going back to the highlands and chasing a red coat with his claymore!
{:o:O:}
Much as I enjoy your films on the companions, I hope you are still working on the next installment in your series of reviews for the various Doctors.
Yes, indeed, Part 11 will be a big one though and will take some more time.
Shame RTD forced in a romantic angle to degrade Sarah's relationship...
You are simply the best DW blogger. I am so glad that you are doing Companions as well as the Doctors! 😆
Thank you!
Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed! I believe the photo was taken them at a signing at Selfridges in 1968. I think some Cybermen accompanied them!
It's Friday already??
(Can't wait to hear your analysis of Ace, whenever that is! :)
Ah ace the companion I grew up with , always makes me worry if she's as good as I think she is or if its more nostalgia
Agreed!
Great work as usual. Brought tears to the eyes!!
loved this loving, well researched history of Jamie. I think the videos you put out are top notch, some of the best Doctor Who histories/commentaries you'll ever find. Keep up the fantastic work!
Superb videos as always, I hope you're doing well.
Sarah is so overated...
Fantstic research! the level of detail is amazing. Please don't stop!
*Sees how long we waited for this*
Look at the size of that one Richard
What a lovely documentary. My only criticism would be that I would have liked to have seen more coverage of Hines' Big Finish stories, but it's a minor thing in such a thoughtful and entertaining video. Thanks!
Is that a Young Pauline Collins in The Faceless Ones? A scouse companion would have been perfect for the era.Although I suppose Jamie had somewhat McCartney-esque looks to go with his and Dr Pat's matching Beatle Mops.
I am really enjoying all of these documentaries sir. Thank you!
You’re most welcome!
Thanks for this. I await more AND on the 10th Doctor!
Yeah, Jamie was definitely the best part of the Two Doctors and it makes me wish we coulda somehow gotten more stories that paired him up with Doctor #6 on TV
Colin manages to channel just enough of Troughton's character to feel like there's still that affection there, without losing his own take on the Doctor -- and Jamie might be a little thrown at first but he isn't taking any of 6's BS lying down.
Gonna go looking for those Big Finish sets now, at least :)
Another excellent episode, totally worth the wait.
Excellent work, yet again, sir. Also quite a tribute to Frazer, in fact.
