Obviously you're entitled to your opinions and taste, but I disagree that this is just an individual showcase of each of their talents. I feel like all of it meshes very well together. Clay's bass combined with the drums really helps emphasize both parts.
Yeah maybe I was a bit harsh in that respect, in hindsight. The main rhythm section (bass and drums) are very much in the pocket with one another. I think the reason for my "showcase" comment is because of how the video flows and each member has the camera pan into them whilst they do some flashy and intricate playing.
I view Polyphia as this generations Rush. Rush brought a love for musicality and technical prowess that allowed them to create grooves and sounds that most contemporary bands couldn't do to their strong grasp on timing. Listend to a Rush song and listen for how often the time signature changes, its WILD! Each member of Rush was a master of their craft in a way that inspired generations of musicians. Polyphia is similar in that each member has an insane grasp on timing, technique, and the value of SILENCE! You will notice in their music how much they use silence and aggressive cutoffs to convey power. They also jam in a way that is highly technical where each part could in other songs be its own lead, while together not sounding messy or confused. Tim Henson also has an interesting technique he picked up from another artist (can't remember who) where he will write a riff in Midi, then find a way to play it, which pushes him to learn or master unorthodox techniques. Also both bands come back to familiar beats and rhythms just frequently enough to not leave behind a casual listener. TL:DR Ployphia is like Rush because they seem like wizards of their contemporary point in time, pushing the boundaries of their medium.
I like that people like this music, don't get me wrong. I just personally don't. I'm not going to slag it off and say it's shit because it isn't. It's fantastic. It's impressive. What they play is virtuoso brilliance. But in the same way I really like Rush and other people don't, it's cool that we don't all agree. Otherwise we'd all listen to exactly the same music and life and musical conversation would be extremely dull and boring.

I'm so glad everyone has different tastes, its what makes music such a wonderful thing. I personally quite like it, but I can understand why people can't wrap their heads around it. I personally can't stand modern pop music, copy paste everywhere. If you haven't already give Playing God a listen.
Me too. There's probably loads of songs and bands I champion on this channel and you guys are thinking "Why on earth does he like this?!?" My girlfriend thinks that deep down I was a teenage girl in a past life because I really like early Paramore 🤣😄🤣 But nevertheless, as I said in this video, I love that guitar music is popular - especially instrumental music. Polyphia may not be my thing, but they are still excellent musicians and I admire their talent and dedication to their instruments. Playing God is the one with Steve Vai isn't it? I will give it a go 👍
@@melvinthinks I believe the one with Steve Vai is Ego Death. Playing God is my personal favorite, I've been learning it on guitar. Keep up the good work man. If only more people could dislike something without mindlessly bashing it, respect.
Thanks dude! And good luck learning to play Playing God. I'm a guitarist myself, and I don't think I'd ever have the patience to learn stuff like this, so kudos to you 👍
There were two bands coming up around the same time that played instrumental music but in their own ways, one was Polyphia and the other was Chon. Chon are the better of the two and it's sad to see them not play anymore. If you simply don't like instrumental music, then nothing will sound good. If you do like instrumental music but want something better than Polyphia, I recommend either Bubble Dream or Perfect Pillow by Chon. They've got plenty of good songs but these are a good starting point.
Cheers dude! I am certainly a fan of instrumental music. Some of my favourite bands have great instrumental tracks (Mastodon, Gojira, Baroness, Rush to name a few) and randomly Band-Maid 'From Now On' I loved to bits! I'll add Chon to my list, for sure. Have an awesome day and thanks for watching 👍
I'm also not the biggest fan of this era of Polyphia. They went a little too hard with the technical aspects and their melodic structures suffered for it imo. Their second album, Renaissance, and their latest album, Remember That You Will Die, are much better in my opinion. Given what I've heard of your musical tastes so far I think you'll actually end up with me in liking their second album the most. It's also really slept on by people reacting to/requesting Polyphia reactions. Most everyone asks for G.O.A.T., Playing God, or Ego Death. But tracks like Nightmare, Crush, and Euphoria are just as good, just not as flashy.
i gotta say, i really appreciate your open minded approach, you have your opinions yet you don't let them make you blind about the talent of the folks, you just double down on the fact it ain't for you while highlighting what you did like. First time i see you but i Subbed
And thank you for the sub and kind words! You may have seen from some of the comments I've actually lost subs because of this video and some Polyphia fans appear to have taken offence. But I think those viewers have missed the point entirely. I can't possibly love every band and reaction video I make. Do you like every song you've ever heard? I doubt it. But as you said, I'm not going to simply slate it and slag it off and ridicule it. I can identify what's good and has talent. I can articulate the parts I like. But I don't necessarily need to fall in love with it. For every Polyphia fan that has unsubbed or disliked the video I'd rather have x1 single viewer and subscriber such as yourself. Thank you 👍🤟🙏
they're not your normal guitar band, which is basically what you mentioned, all electric and competing each other in a show, just playing cz they can....POLYPHIA is a new generation guitar band where the whole music is written like a song and each given their own lyrical parts, not your average guitar concert just playing rock chords without ANY DIRECTIOIN, these guys have a whole song in it without a singer which is why they're getting famous with time. people do retaliate but each to their own.
I liked it but I couldn't say exactly why. I think you do have a good point about it being more a showcase for individual talent than a team band effort. I don't see this as something that would be going on my play list, but, tell me that I only can listen to this, or something like, oh, maybe "Septic Flesh" and I'll take this any day.
The funny thing Gaye, after I recorded and edited this video I found myself scatting and doing weird random sound effects to this song, replicating all of the insane tapping/slapping/virtuoso things they were playing. I'm still not fond of it, but the fact it was stuck in my head long after is evidence as to why the band and song are so popular. If people that hate it still like it, then those that like it will love it forever more! They are incredible musicians. I just hope Polyphia fans don't take offence! It's an acquired taste of music. But I can still admire it even if I don't want to listen to it ever again.
@@melvinthinks Stop trying, and just be that guy! ;) I found it quite interesting to hear someone not bashing them. The concept that you can admire and appreciate the skill and execution and musicianship even though this music isn't exactly your favourite cup of tea seems to make people angry for some reason.
@Dave1507 the abuse I got even whilst not bashing them was enough for me! 😆 I thought my review was quite respectful tbh. I even discussed their jumpers.
Shame. If we all liked exactly the same stuff life would be pretty boring, wouldn't it? I can't stand U2 and Coldplay, but enough people seem to like them. I hope you find what you're looking for. Although U2 haven't.
It's exactly that. An opinion. I just didn't realise when I made this video that some Polyphia fans are quite sensitive and precious. They can't accept that people might not want to actually listen to it yet still admire the playing. We can't all love the same bands and I won't pretend just to please you. Check out Justin Hawkins. You'll love his video too.
That was just one big NOPE for me. I guess people like this for the same reason they like dubstep and that kind of crap... although this one is far better than that and actually has some melody and harmony to it. I would mention Orphaned Land again, to give you something to undo this and satisfy the pallete...
No people don't like this for any of the reasons people like dubstep. People like this because it is the absolute forefront of composition in modern music, it is fantastically melodic, has incredible feel and depth. The entire band comes together to create an extremely cohesive unique and musically brilliant sound. Ironically, the only people who don't like this are those proven to have radio ears who can't handle any music that isn't 4/4 following a standard pop melody. This is the dumbest comment section and channel I've ever seen.
