    I recently told my mum all about 'Nyssa', her response was "who is Nyssa?". I said "she's my friend up in Queensland, she teaches me so much", my mum thought it was lovely. She doesn't have any understanding of youtube and also has dementia, so I didn't want to confuse her too much. But thanks so much Nyssa for you efforts with teaching and entertaining us, and keeping cheer up in what can sometimes be a heavy world.
    Bless you
    Tina

      Naww! A lot of why I started youtube was for the potential community, the ability to bounce ideas of others and share things I enjoy without having to leave the house, I'm really glad that people have enjoyed and found use in what I am capable of sharing in my limited capacity! :D

    I'm addicted to the channel. I absolutely love seeing what you are up to Nyssa with the food prep in your house. It's interesting to get a glimpse of how other people run their kitchens. I also love gardening, harvests, and preserving. You show such love and care in preparing all these from scratch meals for your family. I can see the love in the long hard days of work. I'm tired watching you cook :) and I KNOW you have many other mama duties as well. Hats off to you super mom. Blessings, -Kate

    Good Evening Dear Nyssa!🌷
    Oh how I loved watching the sweet little ones working the apples! Sonnet💗 is a lovely little girl, and soooo very helpful and amazingly capable with helping you. I loved watching her "slinky" the apples! I too, have one of those apple peelers, and I do know how challenging it can be to get that core off the end of the rod! Watching little Kavik "help her" with his "taste tasting" was a delight as well. 😊
    Your children are lovely, and beautiful!
    Thank you for giving us a sweet little glance of them today, it was a delightful treat, I must say!
    Love and hugs, dear Nyssa!💗🌷😊

    Watching your daughter help reminds me of my childhood. My mother used to tease and say they would weigh me when we left the berry patches so she knew what she owed. Eat one, put one in the basket. I love your page. Found you from a news article. Much love from an American in the Caribbean.

      Heh, she definitely takes advantage of being a helper! When my mum was visiting once we were gathering veggies from the garden and I gave her the bush beans to hold, we got inside and I asked her for them and she just grinned at me! She’d eaten them all before we even got in the house lol! Welcome! :)

    Your channel is such an inspiration - it’s lovely to see an Australian family living this way - most of the people on here are in the US.
    Have you thought about getting a steam juicer to help process those left over apple cores? That could then give you ‘free’ juice to add back into your Apple Pie filing recipes, and also cut down on your need for processed sugar in the recipe to make it cheaper.
    Plus I’m sure the kids would love a splash in some soda stream water in summer!

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  2 роки тому +1

      I have a steam juicer! I am very much looking forward to giving it a good workout with the new apples. Sometimes with the smaller batches I get a bit sidetracked while doing other things and struggle to juggle it, it requires so much supervision in my kitchen with the tubes and jars and kids! :). I will definitely be making plenty with the new lot though :). Thank you! :)

    I love Sonnet's role as chief slinky operator, which involves regular quality control testing.
    I had a good day too. Granddaughter is 4 on Monday. We went into her favourite shop - Bunnings, and bought purple fruiting vegetables because purple is her favourite colour. We had KFC for lunch in the car while whale watching. We saw 2.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  2 роки тому +1

      That sounds awesome, Sonnets favourite colour is purple as well, we always make sure to plant purple zinnias and I got chillis this year that go from yellow to purple to red before you pick them, she found that super exciting! :D. Purple carrots too!
      Paying in chunks of apple seems a pretty good deal to me! :D heh

    Sonnet was a great help there. This looks pretty much how my teeny, tiny🤣 apple preserving day went . Apples were constantly eaten , chickpea cookie dough dip was required and eventually we got some done. Lol. I ended up using a jar of apple/pear/mandarin juice id done last year and a jar of that runny apple peel syrup and cut the sugar in half. It tastes yummy. Thank you for sharing lovely 🤩

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  Рік тому

      I really like the ability to use the apples in any way I want when I do them like this too! Like a crumble can have that extra moisture it doesn't even need to be thickened, a pie obviously can do with a little bit of thickening, but I have used it as toppings over Dutch Baby pancakes too, and with ice cream/custard, or in like cinnamon scroll type things, and because I didn't add anything when I canned it, it is useful in all those ways :D. and it doesn't take much effort to thicken it if I want to do that as well

Well you will figure out the perfect dish. Would it taste good in the puff pastry? Really enjoyed the editing and music. The kids really pitched in today

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  2 роки тому +1

      The apple has no texture to it, after the bicarb softening it and then the pressure canning, its all just pulp, super tasty pulp, but pulp none the less lol, I may use it as jam in a cake, or to sweeten our homemade yoghurt, maybe as a crumble/crisp but it won't be suitable for in pastry I don't think lol.

    I'm catching up with all the previous videos and loving them. Can I ask why you rarely use dairy, is it dietry choices or due to allergies? Do you find making soap bars save you money ? I use shop shop bought soap and shampoo for environmental reasons. Take care. Xx

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  2 роки тому +2

      My kiddos and husband (other than Kavik) were all quite intensely allergic/intolerant to dairy as babies, some grew out of it somewhat, some didn't, some still react badly, so we find it easier just to not use it (other than my occasional sneaky lol). It just becomes the new normal and we get around it, I am grateful though that they all tolerate fermented dairy like yoghurt and milk kefir so long as they don't go overboard! The allergist suggested triallling it a while back and it went really well so now we have integrated it :D
      I don't know that it saves me money as such, the aldi goats milk soap that I can buy is pretty inexpensive and the organic shampoo and conditioner from coles is also fairly inexpensive, Sonnet and Darryl both have issues with SLS, they both get really bad eczema and roll on health issues (mouth ulcers if it is in toothpaste for eg) so we have to buy specific soaps to cater for that, so its kind of a way to control ingredients, but I also like to play with add ins, like the molasses oat ones have this lovely feel and smell to them! :D

    Hi I just found your channel and I am looking forward to watching your previous videos. I don't normally comment, but I also make some of my own dog food. I saw you put onions and garlic in your broth and as far as I know these are poisonous to dogs. I'm sorry if I sound like I'm telling you what to do, it is not the case. I am really enjoying your channel, so down to earth. I just thought to give you heads up. Please check, my info could be wrong or just over the top. Keep up the good work you are so inspiring.

      @frugalitystartsathome4889 2 роки тому

      Nyssa has addressed this point previously. Whilst onions and garlic are often stated to be poisonous for dogs, that’s only in quite large quantity - not the levels used in making stock in the way that she does - so there’s not actually an issue in her using what she does in making her dog food.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  2 роки тому

      Hi! Welcome :). We try to pull the big chunks of onion out, but at the same time the toxicity levels of onion and garlic on dogs is quite high :) 100-150g of onion per kg of body weight and 30-35g of garlic per kg of body weight. We find garlic in lower amounts helps their coats and with flea control too :). The food is spread between 4 large 20 odd kg dogs so they are getting minimal per serve :)
