This is so interesting. I’ve played guitar since I was a kid and only recently (2020ish) got into groove boxes and stuff. I felt then (and still do) that it was so cool that 30 minutes on the Groovebox resulted in SOMETHING. An idea with form, something that persisted, etc. I felt it contrasted with my hours of guitar playing each day which was predominantly noodling.
Your video exactly states the reason I purchased the Polyend. To just play, have fun and experiment. I foresee this instrument in use on my lap or on my desktop on a nearly daily basis.
These concepts, playing and recording, are two things I'm currently struggling to merge effectively and have been for years. I started out as a beat maker with very few skills in instrumentation and then dedicated myself to learning piano. Going from playing to recording/arranging/producing is a big struggle for me personally and I'm still trying to find out how to merge the two harmoniously, especially since I spent so much time learning improvisation in a jazz setting. Deciding what to commit to a track is challenge for me haha. I think what I'm realizing is that when I'm at the keys in front of Ableton, or sitting with my MPC, I don't spend enough time just playing until I actually have a musical idea. I'm just in the mindset of "make a beat" and the playing is less intentional and almost feels like I'm just filling up time 🤔 Damn I think I just figured something out... Thanks man! Haha
Very interesting, i'll have to look into this more. Recently I've gotten into modular which has a very similar effect for me. It feels more like an instrument and encourages you to just make something in the moment. I find it to be a lot of fun and rewarding even if I don't record most of the things i make.
There’s a path to electronic music production that goes through buying a few keyboard synths and doing something like this across those devices. If you took the groovebox path, I can see you missing out on how fun it can be to just jam on multiple keyboards at the same time. I have one of these temporarily and you nailed the experience. I just have fun and play. I have mine going through a 404 so I can capture a good idea and work out how to make it a sequence later, but in the moment I just enjoy messing around. This was a great way to showcase that point.
Bought this mainly as a midi controller to play my Digitone 2. It's awesome at it, the chord modes and follower functions are awesome. Turns out I really like the sounds and effects too. Sample into the Digitakt 2. Found my trio. Very happy with mine overall
i think of all of my time with synths as "playing" because previously i had only ever used my voice or handbells when i was younger. i really enjoy playing around with the sequences i can make on the subharmonicon by turning knobs. the beetlecrab tempera really embodies a sense of play for me, at least it's really fun to use the factory and community presets
I have Synth. I also have, I think, 10 other hardware synths (12 if you count the Korg Monotron Duo and Delay). I believe Synth is the easiest to program without being mind-numbingly simple in terms of sound (shoutout to Monotrons, Waldorf Rocket, Behringer TD-3). Synth isn’t the best-sounding. Its most obvious sweet spot is in saw and square basses, followed by atmospheric stuff. It’s easy to overload the CPU. Aliasing abounds on higher notes. There are I think 15 filter options and maybe 3 or 4 of them actually sound good. But it is SO easy to explore. The grid is physically beautiful and almost hypnotic. Making the root note brighter across the grid is so incredibly intuitive. I’ve programmed like 5 of my own “scenes” (combos of 3 presets) already. I have virtually never programmed a digital synth before, beyond simple tweaks or following somebody’s instructions for a specific type of sound on a specific instrument. I haven’t really gotten into the arp and sequencer yet but I suspect that some of the sounds I’ve made will sound better arpeggiated.
This could be very good for developing an ear for chord-melody relationships through experimentation. Also, it could be great for singer-songwriters to perform with instead of an acoustic guitar.
I agree with you. I have the same thoughts about playing vs recording, sequencing. I enjoy it but not as much as playing my piano because of the immediacy and also the experience of playing music just for the moment.
Great video, I have spent hours looking at a plethora of videos on ambient / soundscape creation and feel this maybe be the answer. My work focuses on the psychophysiological impact of sound/music and require something to help with our research, thank you.
@@Taetro We have not published anything yet , mainly using the data for continued R and D , we are pivoting from specific therapeutics to more generalised application , allowing musicians, producers to verify the emotional impact of their music/soundscapes
I sold my other Polyend gear and was going to avoid them due to frustration with how long they took to update Play+; then they announced this and I immediately ordered it. It's a very fun instrument. My only gripe is the pads aren't the best, but I've been spoiled by Push 3 and Maschine+.
You’re definitely not over thinking it. This was a good topic. I have the tracker and play, but this idea really does seem cool. Theres nothing really like it that I’m aware of
Keyboard splits have been a thing for a long time! Play 2+ instruments on the same keybed no problem! Any two hardware synths you want, or two softsynths, or a combo? Keyboard split, most keyboards have it above the entry-level range
This is an inexpensive keyboard split… but with scale modes and a sequencer with 8 voices. Workstations can do this but this is a fraction of the price. Cool stuff
Yes! Keyboard splits are the closest thing I can think of…my astrolab does it easily, but a grid vs a keybed is a different playing experience for sure
If you love something, and do it well, would you not get paid for it? I put a lot of time and effort into my videos. Without sponsors, I would not be able to put as much time in.
He’s a musician trying to make money, not much wrong with that. Consider, it’s hard to make money on places like Spotify and the Spotify CEO is worth 7+ billion. Do you use Spotify?
I have to say I am rather underwhelmed with the Polyend Synth I bought. and now it is making a humming sound and isn't working. I am sending it back. you make it sound great. me, not so much.
i believe all those gadgets and gear in the end they only distract you from being creative and concentrate to create a melody ... you simply need a midi keyboards in the end and some assignable knobs..

This is kinda what my eurorack stuff has turned into and I can’t get enough of it
I love SYNTH, it definitely begs to be "played" and have fun while doing so.

this with a syntakt is a power combo, the synth made me come back to music.

So inspiring this is my approach coming from painting

They should have named it the Polyend Noodle.
Haha good call! 🍜
ANYTHING would have been better than calling it the "synth"
That's like Ford making a car called "Car"
…Renault Le Car has entered the chat…
@@treschlet Well Ford did make the Ford Ka.

It's really important to have that creative outlet that's just for you.
@ Yep. Only regret with the Polyend synth is the pads. I would have like them to be more like the move or push 2.

I've been spoiled by the feel of the Push 3 too, but this synth is still fun for sure!

The closest thing would be using like novation launchpad pro mk3 and hooking it up to a few hardware or software synths and controlling those.
Keyboard splits have been a thing for a long time! Play 2+ instruments on the same keybed no problem!

Not exactly the same as a grid, but definitely a means of doing something similar!
Which scene did you use for the Dark Ambient track?
The Polyend synth is really good for playing. I wish thought it has the pad of the Ableton move. The Polyend pads are correct but not so playable.

@ yeah I like scale modes on the circuit tracks. The split on an mpe device could be nice too.
Let’s see..mine is coming…soon…and- i was thinking the same way- to play around…you just proof it…but let’s see by myself..)..
How well does ist work with Ableton‘s Move together. I’m wondering if it is a great dub techno combo
Any😅ne know what Venus Theory pack he is using?
Every Taetro video I come across in my feed says “Includes Paid Promotion” 😂

Every video you watch on UA-cam contains a preroll advertisement to pay Alphabet Inc.

make sure you’ve updated the firmware, and give it sometime. All these instruments take some practice
does that sony line in record stereo?
Yes!
Unfortunately the clicking popping when like dialing timbre is really overwhelming
Great video btw!
Really? I haven’t experienced that for most sounds

I have push 2 and I was saving some money to buy a new device because my birthday 🥳 is coming. Do you recommend me the ableton move ?
I’m having a lot of fun with it!

there’s definitely a dividing line between two sides of myself:
-music tech enthusiast
-music maker
I am a keyboard person too, but these pad gadgets are definitely well-suited for ambient.
You could use some of the money you made from doing this 10 minute ad to buy a mic stand.
already have one! thanks for the suggestion!
