"What if I get my cutie mark in being bored?!" I found that sudden realization hilarious

The moral would be that since cutiemarks are a curse that comes (aparently) at random with time; trying to delay it is like avoiding next Friday.
-> It is better to do stuff without caring about it. If anything to not tempt fate to give you a "default whatever" answer when it loses its patience.

Seasons 4 & 5 had the best songs I.M.O, there were a few from other seasons that I liked, but aren't as memorable. So it's kinda disappointing that you said this episode had the last song of Season 7, as I was hoping for one similar to the ones in Seasons 4 & 5.

It's definitely a progression for the CMC, and the resolution was splendid. In this day and age especially, it's nice to see reminders that you can have multiple talents and you don't have to be stuck doing one thing you're good at for the rest of your life.

What is more exciting was Thunderlane and Rumble finally become minor characters and antagonist with interesting backstory and character after seasons.

I get where Rumble is coming from. I always knew that when I grow up I wanna be a voiceactress and as a result i never looked at anything else other than acting. But then I decided to expand my horizons and I discovered that I had a talent for dancing and that I was great at entertaining children. I also discovered my talent for body painting as well.
It really pays to try new things.
As a certain singing gazelle once said: "TRY EVERYTHING!"

That kinda sums up my college days too. We have a lot of classes focusing on psychology, sociology and art, and most of my classmates would scoff at art classes since they're not comfortable drawing or painting or crafting at all because they claim they can't do it. I don't think I would have found that I love making toys if we didn't have puppetry class. But if I may add one more thing, since the episodes is geared to kids too, we still have the old system in school ongoing and everything needs to be top notch for a passing grade, so there's still that fear of failure so most children and then later adults won't attempt many things because of it.

  • @aceash459

I feel like Rumble too. Whenever someone asks us in Highschool what we want to become when we grow up, I can never give an answer. At first I thought only because it's very hard for me to make choices of any kind, but then I realised that I was actually afraid to choose just one thing, it is more fun to feel free to try anything. Even if I will eventually find my destiny, is hard for me to think what I'll do after that

you know, if you think about it, Pinkie Pie's talent is party planning, but she works baking at Sugar Cube Corner. Rarity's talent is tracking down gems, but runs a fashion business. Rainbow Dash is good at going fast and Applejack is good at apple bucking, but they both tend to do a variety of sports and other activities. There have always been examples of ponies doing more than just their cutie marks.

One thing that I thought was also great about this episode, was a little more fleshing out of a pair of male, back-round, brother characters. Something not seen so much on this show, maybe a little more recently though.

  • @indigosteel5702
    @indigosteel5702 7 років тому +6

I'm surprised that nobody (or pony) seems to have mentioned Pinkie Pie! Her special talent is parties, yet she works at a bakery and seemingly enjoys it! One could argue that maybe her party talent includes this, but that seems a bit of a stretch. Then, there's her talent and desire to prank people. Maybe she's a special case as the Element of Laughter?
Also, Rarity's a good example; her special talent ISN'T fashion, but seeking out gems; and yet, something only slightly related to her talent is what she's known for and skilled at!

    • @amegenshiken
      @amegenshiken 7 років тому +1

Besides, there's a couple of old sayings "A picture is worth a thousand words" and "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". If one were to combine those sayings, it'd result in something like "A picture is worth a thousand words, but different people see different words in the same image."
So, there's many ways one can derive the meaning of a cutie mark. For instance, back in Magical Mystery Cure, when Rarity had Rainbow Dash's cutie mark; her reading of "tri-colored lightning bolt below a cloud" was more "weather artist". While to Rainbow Dash, the tri-colored lighting bolt was (likely) more symbolic of that first Sonic Rainboom that earned her cutie mark in the first place.
Similarly, my own imagined cutie mark (an origami paper crane) has multiple meanings. While, yes, I'm good at not just folding paper into interesting shapes. I can also fold flimsier forms of paper like napkins and tissue paper and odd stuff like fabric in similar ways. But, another interpretation of that same image could be an interest in the arts culture of origin (Japan) or an enjoyment of seeing how a story "unfolds" so to speak. Like how every story comes to an end, if you were to reverse the steps of folding an origami model you'd get an otherwise plain piece of paper every time. Me, I'd like to say my imagined cutie mark means...all of the above.

    • @brigidtheirish
      @brigidtheirish 7 років тому +1

Given the story of a thousand paper cranes, that cutie mark could also be about helping those who are terminally ill, or specifically treating cancer, granting wishes, or general good luck. Related to that story, the paper crane has become a symbol of peace, especially connected to children. There are a whole lot of ways to interpret a mark like that.

    • @titanhades4331
      @titanhades4331 7 років тому

A bakery where she makes cakes, pies, cupcakes, and other party related stuff. We've never seen her bake anything that isn't party related.
And Rarity does dig for gems to use with all her clothes.
Neither reallyy helps with this situation.
What happens if you get a cutie mark that has absolutely no connection to what you want to do? Rumble wants to be a Wonderbolt but would be screwed if he got an apple cutie mark.
I checked every wonderbolt. Each has a symbol that ties in with being a wonderbolt.

Before watching the episode, I was honestly expecting halfway through the episode for Rumble to get his Cutie Mark by accident, he'd be down about, and the CMC would try to talk him out of a the slump that he would have likely (and understandibly) had fallen into as a result.
But the way the episode actually unfolded was 10x better than that idea at LEAST! Especially with Rumble not getting his Cutie Mark at all (which with how the episode was unfolding I was hoping would happen and was glad that he did).
I didn't expect this episode to be so good. I by no means thought it would be bad, or even "meh". But I definitely wasn't expecting to be one of the better episodes out of this season. So color impressed.😊

I've read on TV Tropes that a few ways that people wanted to this episode to go are by adding Starlight. Either by explaining why a pony might not like Cutie Marks to the CMC or by having her speak to Rumble. Supposedly, ever a few Starlight haters wanted to see that.

I'm almost done with High school. And I already have plains on what I want to do after. But I do find myself questioning if I'll have time for other things I like. Even if my career choice is something that I will really in joy.
My brother is a prop and costume maker. And he loves it. But he doesn't have a lot of time for other things he loves. He doesn't even have time to visit on important occasions. Like my birthday or Thanksgiving. He's not even sure if he'll make it to Christmas this year.
It kinda made me afraid that what my life will become when I'm done with school. I don't want to stop doing everything I love just for one thing.
This episode really hit home for me. And help me feel more confident with my life after school.

And there are sooo many fascinating things in the world! It's one of the things I liked about homeschooling. I could pursue my own interests at my own pace. My dad having the equivalent of a small university library in the attic helped. During my first attempt at college, I found the liberal arts requirements much more fun than the classes for my chosen major. Which really should've told me something sooner...

I'm kind of the same. I never thought I'd want to become a psychologist for most of my life. I wanted to do something in relation with arts as academia never appealed to me.
All those years on and I'm in my second year of my psychology degree. I still want to incorporate arts into my future psychology career (using arts to help people talk about their mental health difficulties). We can incorporate our past talents and interests into our current path if we are creative enough to figure out ways to do so.
I think that fillies in Equestria should be taught lessons that cutie marks never truly express who they are. They express passion and talent in one area but they aren't limited to this job or talent. I use my arts as means to study for tests and exams.
We aren't limited by the one talent we have. We have many talents that we can share with the world. I make people gifts, I draw, I paint, I dance, I love makeup artistry... And I love my academic side. I love my inquisitive and critical side when it comes to reading research and taking a critical perspective on current psychological developments.
If we didn't have more than one talent, we might never truly find out what we are capable of and never truly grow.

My dad once told me, write what you know, but if you don’t do anything new then how I write. I liked the episode and I think my special talent as a writer lets me be open to experience other things. And just like you I didn’t know I wanted to be a writer, I may have dabbled in it in elementary through high school but I didn’t realize it till I started reading book and started to be more creative. Before my stories made no sense, now I almost want to show others my stories and feel proud at what I wrote.

This episode addresses issues I have had with the series for some time.
There seemed to be an element of determinism in the name/cutie mark/talent combination. In the CMC episode "Cutie Pox", it seemed as if having more than one talent was a problem, rather than an asset. That might deter potential polymaths from fully exploring their full range of skills.
It is said that "to be deeply educated in only one thing is barbarism". Perhaps, in our diligence to avoid "Mary Sues", we lose some of our souls. 7@=e

I'd really like to see Pip get his cutie mark sometime soon. He's the only pony in the entire show with a paint color pattern - as unique as Zekora. I don't know about anyone else but when he walks around his color pattern trips up my eyes a bit. It would be interesting to see his cute little self with a cutie mark and see how that would work in contrast to his body.

When I was little, I really wanted to be a star. Either a movie actress or a singer or something that let me up on a stage. However, at the same time and long before as well as after this dream, I've loved drawing and a good story. I actually made my own little homemade books of made up stories when I was little. But, because I was so focused on being a star when I grew up, I never took advantage of the talents I had that were much more quiet and subdued. It wasn't until middle school that I was finally able to prove myself on stage for the school musical and things instantly went bad. I found out the hard way that I had stage fright and I felt so humiliated when I failed to make a good impression. As horrible as it was, it helped me discover my true passion and talents. Being assigned to being one of the backup dancers for the biggest musical number "Be Our Guest" (the play was Beauty And The Beast, by the way) I had a lot more free time than the other actors and was asked to help with the backstage work when we weren't working on the song I was in. I found that I really loved making magic behind the curtain and making the show what it is rather than preforming. The next year, I went back to the auditions for the new play but, instead of being an actress, I asked to be one of the stage hands and ended up being a huge help. I was so happy to helping and supporting the actors away from the audience's eyes and realized that it was much more important to me to help make a story what it is rather than being in it. I went back to my drawing roots and rediscovered my passion for it, even though it never truly went away. Then, one day while looking through some of my old art stuff, I found my old stories and remembered how much fun I had making up adventures for such strange creatures. I decided to try writing my own stories again and found that I loved it just as much as I loved to draw. One of my teachers told me about authors and illustrators and said that I had a real talent for both skills. It was then that I realized that creating stories was my true calling as both a passion and profession. I'm still working on becoming an author and illustrator, but I'm really enjoying every step I take to reach that goal. As Thunder Lane told his brother about his love for cooking, I wish I had realized sooner that I loved being an author and illustrator. But I am grateful for the other things I tried. They helped me find who I am.

I enjoyed this episode. It was a good exploration of cutie marks, and Rumble was a good antagonist without being a villain. Personally I've always loved the cutie mark system. I wish our world had something similar. A cutie mark (and the special talent it represents) is what a pony loves and enjoys most, I would love a system where I got solid indication of what that was for me.
And it's not limiting at all, as Rumble learned at the end. Just because you know your special talent doesn't mean you can't do other things, or even can't use that special talent in different ways. Yes that is what you're going to be doing most of the time, because it is by definition what you love doing most, but it's not the be all and end all. In this I think Rainbow Dash is an excellent example. Her special talent is fast flight. Her initial career was weather management, which makes use of fast flight but doesn't necessarily require it. Then she moved on to the Wonderbolts, which makes more use of her talent. And one of her past-times is reading adventure books, which has nothing to do with flying.

I had to admit I had mixed feelings about this episode, but now that you mentioned your opinions I kind of liked it it reminds me of what I do during my free time. For example I may be a domino’s pizza delivery driver, but I design and create my own Gundam models from scratch Play Yu-Gi-Oh card games, and play video games like overwatch and Batman the Arkham series. And my best example so far was when I used to play team Fortress two but I haven’t played it for at least 6 to 8 months(pretty long if you ask me) after playing TF two it brought back good memories. Man I got to get back to building new Gundam Models.

    • @Arthus850
      @Arthus850 7 років тому +13

Technology Electro Zapp He's not "suddenly" a wonderbolt. We saw him progress on the background in various Rainbow Dash wonderbolt episodes. In Wonderbolt Academy, we saw that he was one of the cadets alongside Rainbow Dash. And later on in Parental Glidance we saw him as a full fledged wonderbolt flying in Rainbow's squadron, so we have to assume he was promoted in-between episodes. This is just the first episode that brought it into attention.

Like Arthus850 , Thunderlane appears to have had an appropriate character arc in the background, though I'm not suprised by that, knowing the show staff. He was mentioned as a strong flyer in Hurricane Fluttershy, tried out with Rainbow Dash in Wonderbolt Academy, was revealed to be one in Parental Glidance, showing he became one after RD, and now is formally introduced as one here.

Makes total sense I’m still in college and have just change my major to education from creative writing. Most my family wanted me to go for dance, but I knew it wouldn’t make me money even if I was really good at it. They saw me work really well with kids so I picked education after creative writing since they didn’t really think it was going anywhere; course I really don’t let them know I know what they thought, but I changed it for them. Maybe I will go into English/creative writing once I get a full time job. Can’t say my part time job is what i want to do (stuff with hair and beauty products) but you got to make money in order to get anywhere in life.

I very much have to agree there. You never know what path might lead you.
Howevera a cutie mark is more than a profession. It is an example of your identity. In a sense you found your 'cutie mark' in acocunting cause you have a desire ot help people. In this case you are helping them by guiding them on how to finance and keep in order their money.....
Sadly a big thing that HAS to be done in these situations is having support behind you...... Some of us don't have that support. I kinda flunked outta college and now i am unsure where i can go from here. I had financial aid with it of course, but now i don't..... I only have one class but even a single college course can cost hundreds of dollars.
I find myself without competent guidance either. My parents are...... Not really getting that things have greatly changed since their college days. For the worse even. They mean well but generally speaking, i have grown to not trust theri advice cause of their apparrent lack of awareness of this front.
Sooo i am kinda in a bit of stasis myself.

I got flash backs of a time in the MLP fandom in response to the CMC getting their cutie marks: They were hoping for a future episode where Twilight Sparkle removed their Cutie Marks with a spell to prove that they could "Be awesome with out them" and continue to do what they wanted with out their cutie marks weighing them down. (No idea what that last part means)
Rumble kind of reminded me of those fans, only WAY less obnoxious and more understandable.
The logic of those fans was that if the CMC knew what they wanted to do with their lives, then they'd no longer be repeatable because the people in question who liked the CMC identified with them because they had no idea what they wanted to do in life or what they wanted to be. After the CMC got their marks, these people felt left behind and were angry that now they no longer had characters to project themselves onto.

As much as i think Starlight Glimmer is in too much lately, she of all ponies would know how it feels to force people not to have cutie marks and special talents.

  • @connorthompson8376

I didn't so much see their not doing anything as avoiding a challenge. More like they avoided doing things for fear of commitment. It started as a sort of Peter Pan idea, and then fell apart. And it's very true to life. You can't stay a kid or stay uncommitted forever. And those who try end up being failures. Honestly, I related to this episode, and probably ended up thinking a bit too hard about it. My own problems are probably more like the CMC's than Rumble's. But his makes sense. We don't always get the carrier that we imagine as a child. And I feel that my own college degree branded me for the longest time, making it hard to work outside of that field. I might have found what's right for me by now. And hopefully I have the stability to pursue other things and even switch careers in the long run. They hit all the right notes here in a simple and easy to understand message. What I'd like to see next is the problem of a pony who actually wants to change their cutie mark. The CMC have dealt with disillusionment before, but this idea could help explore the idea of this episode even further.

When I first watched the episode, the ending, to me, felt kind of empty. I don't really know why it felt empty to me, but it just did.
I kept saying to myself "why aren't the CMC noticing he isn't trying?" It bugged me, and still kind of does. It was quiet obvious that he wasn't. I half expected Rumble to get his cutie mark in the end, but wasn't really surprised when he didn't.
I like the episode, but it certainly isn't my favorite. It has a good moral and really good for anyone to watch.

We were focusin something on him with a montage of scenes while the CMC were running a full camp and not all of them saw all the examples we saw. So that was not an issue. But still the episode was a bit empty too imo.

They didn't notice because they're foals and there were other foals who needed their attention. We only got the highlights, thus his lack of trying is obvious to us.

As for the ending for me, Rumble was just starting to come to terms with his mindset head-on. It would naturally be a while before he got or accepted his own cutie mark.
As for the CMC’s attention to detail, the video reminded me that all three fillies were noticing his ‘performances’ one at a time, and while attending to the rest of the campers. So again, it’s only natural that pressuring Rumble into explaining himself was what got all three of them up to speed on what only we saw.

I think it'd be cool to see how the Mane6/CMC would handle a place that actually embodied Starlight/Rumble's fears about Cutie Marks; like a city that operates under a strict regimented caste system where your cutie mark determines your job, class, and social status. This has been the second time now that the possible negative implications of cutie marks have been brought up, it'd be nice to see them explored further, but I guess that's what fanfics are for.

I have to admit marks and Recreation didn't really do it for me on the first pass. I felt like it was a pretty bland episode. Although I like to see new third-tier characters get added to the show with just a little bit of extra insight into Rumble and thunder Lane. But I am glad to hear that you were able to take so much from it. I look forward to watching the MLP movie this weekend so I can watch your review of that shortly after.

My brother's a accountant, but he seems to be off in his own little world at night when he's supposed to be at home. And he never tells me where he's been, as I am awfully concerned the new cash inflow of his job has once again made him zest with greed to spread the wealth in dangerous ways, instead of saving up for a restful retirement years in advance. I mean, it's good he now has a job again after months of moping around the house during the summer, but he often takes longer and longer to get home. Also, archery with bare hooves is quite odd to say the least.

Like plenty an episode in this series, it took willpower for me to sit through the first viewing from beginning to end. Not because the content was exposed as outright condescending from an adult POV, but because it pushed the limits of what I consider kids shows capable of exploring.
I’m going through a Rumble phase right now. I graduated in Civil Engineering weeks ago and am waiting to start a Master’s degree in Statistics. I should be giving my all in implementing both of these into a career field, but now that I had an art class that taught me how to use Photoshop and iMovie, I’ve been spending this summer creating movies myself, after years of simple subscriptions to UA-cam channels that make video essays, reviews, etc. I’m doing pretty well at what I am focusing on (dubbing animated characters and creating memes from shows) and I’m not too concerned about the number of views. And as I’m about to start a discussion post on on the ASCE website, I hope I’m not the only one who can figure out how to implement their hobby straight into their career at some point.

I think the message got muddled. It was going good. Until the part where "he is not scare of having a box unchecked, he has already checked a certain box in his mind." That is the part of the episode that I wanted to toss the computer out the window. Saying how he had a goal and wanted that and that alone. I think it would have been more powerful if he was really scared of being limited to one thing that he may or may not like. Echoing the fears of applebloom from that dream episode of her's. Or maybe he could have just not wanted one to rebel against a society who put a huge emphasis on cutie marks. The other part was they had set up early on that he was living in his brother's shadow so that was an annoying fake out. Will I won't say this episode is bad, I can say that I am severely disappointed. Funny part is I was looking forward to this episode while the mlp fans around me were criticizing it before it aired. That might have something to do with it, but I think the idea is good, the execution is lacking.

    Something to mention
    Changelings turn into "nymps"
When stopping being toxic in love
Mares turn into nightmares while on extreme emotional stress
And in my opinion umbras are a stand in for mental illness
( Sombra being paranoid about his destiny and rarity being able to use his magic tanks for the book induced mania
Not to mention the egotism of Trixie magnified by the necklace)
Dragons turn bigger or smaller based in greed
Discord alright disappears when turned into a normie
And the wendigos feed on sadness
My point is : what was Equestria like before sentient life developed as emotions are a legitimate and powerful force in this land
Ponies change the seasons and alter the weather
Does that mean that evolution doesn't exist here and that Faust is a legitimate deity
Or did everything just coevolved in a more dramatic way that in our world?

"You will never succeed at your passion, no matter how hard you try, unless you were already predestined to do so"
That's the message I got from this episode. Rumble will never become a great flyer, because that's obviously not his special talent, he'll just have to settle for whatever fate hands him.
That's obviously not what they intended, but something tells me the CMC never had a client who wanted to be a writer but ended up stuck with a cutie mark in data-entry. :-(
