  • Oh boy, what a ride this game was. I remember two distinct periods when I played this game. I remember first encountering this game some time between 2010 and 2011. With my 9 year old brain at the time, I never got to the wily stages mostly because my skills at Megaman were bad and the game was running at 1000 miles per second lol. Growing up I hated Mirrorman since his reflection and his mirror swing move got me a lot. However, when I revisited this game in 2018, when I was 17 years old, I managed to beat the game while it was running fast lol.
My favorite moments in the game was the Dragon fight, Roll, Next, and the final Bass fight. I remember rushing (no pun intended), to beat Bass the morning right before I had to leave for my high school class. Actually, while editing this video, there were a lot of funny moments in the dialogue. For instance, Megaman blasting Bass to bits using his final buster charge, in that final dialogue, and all that was left of Bass was his memory box. Then, you had Megaman pulling the DBZ "I'm The Defender Of Earth" move to kill Jaguar. I'm surprised that people on Newgrounds have not made a parody video based off of that dialogue scene. And then the final boss fight, where Megaman pretty much pulls the Super Sonic move, where his life force is draining but he blasts the crap out of Bass. I feel like the Doomsday boss fight track might of fit the vibe I was getting for this fight, but the current track was not distracting nor did it take away from the fun. And even better, going back to that final dialogue with Megaman and Bass, I couldn't help but think to that final scene in Naruto Shippuden where Naruto and Sasuke were badly injured after like a days worth of clashing.
Some notable things about this game, is that I see references to the X series and a couple of other games. For instance, Mirrorman put me in the mind of Armor Armadillo, Tornado (now known as Sandstorm) man being a callback to Storm Eagle, and the final Bass fight put me in the mind of Doomsday Zone, with Hyper Sonic vs Eggman, in Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
I can't remember if I looked at the Rick Legends series after beating this game or not. However, joggling through my memory bank, I remember beating Roll Next (loved that game), and then Megaman X Next. Both games are currently unavailable to play. There is technically a way to play them using Flashpoint infinity, but unless you want to end up with a computer full of viruses, I would recommend waiting.
Anyways, I had fun revisiting this game again after about 5 years. I will include the download links below (Harman Cloud and for the game).
Next off will be the Megaman 1 reimagined pack in Megaman Maker. I'm debating whether I want to use my current nsf replacements or just use vanilla Megaman Maker tracks. Actually, I am leaning towards using Woodfrog's remix of the Wily Wars tracks. In the meantime, between my next few uploads, Imma start digging out some Megaman fangames and creating a list of the ones, I have yet to cover and highlighting the ones that I did cover.
Update on my MMMX level pack: managed to get two stages up to the midboss, so be on the lookout for a teaser video after the next upload.

Crapy arts and memories of playing it on easy mode (which obviously meant i didn't fought a Jaguar, Roll, Megaman Next and Bass for the second time) what a weird time and kinda ironic how this game is one of the closest to actual original MM game in terms of level systems (the other one was rpg style flash one).

The dialog does make me cringe at younger me, but guess that's gonna happen to anyone that looks back at stuff. Trying to rewrite the wording for the remix to keep the concepts in there without making me want to put my head underwater and scream gonna be a challenge.
Some of the funniest parts for me looking back (aside from dialog)...
    - Younger me couldn't readily get boundaries for a 'camera' to work (or didn't really acknowledge the benefits of them in my excitement). I just grafted it to the players XY and rolled with it, weird mid air explosions or not.
    - The original Circuitry Man stage rapid flashing instead of the pulsing I changed it too will still be missed. Younger more excitable me was like "Look at it flashing, that's gotta mean it's super charged high voltage".
    - Not thinking of using tiles and instead just making single stage sections as big as flash would let me and stretching them. Despite more than a decade of watching NES, SNES, and others use tiles.
Definitely can see I was overly excited at figuring out how to make a game and just hammering it out rather than methodically planning lol.

Lol I think that’s everybody whenever they start off something for their first time. For instance, my original Megaman Maker level (back in 2017) was just embarrassing. I was watching a streamer play it and I was just questioning, what was 15 year old me thinking when making this lol. Lots of tricky spike jumps, fighting Cutman with a spike in the middle of the room, and an unclear death pit.
Honestly the big dialogue kicker that got me, was when Megaman killed Jaguar and Bass was like “What the hell has gotten into you Megaman?!” and Megaman pretty much pulled the Goku “I’m The Defender Of Earth” move 😂.
I feel ya man, especially with Circuitry. I just don’t get how modern games can pull off the flashy effects without much worry about it affecting the players, unless it is because they had the warning at the beginning of it. Personally I think applying dynamic effects makes the game much more engaging.
And like you said, you have come a long way since then. Likes it’s crazy how you went from that to X Next. For me that probably would have taken years to pull considering the learning curve with applying wall climb, dashing, the boss fights, and upgrades

@@Firesawdust Think modern games get around the flicker type flashing by abusing particle effects and lighting since they're much easier to do in modern engines. I know I definitely want a proper particle system for whatever the next fresh game I make lol.
The thing in MMXN that was probably the biggest coding feat for me in my opinion truthfully was the slopes. They needed custom block collision code since their Y collision shifted depending on where you were along the X axis.
The dialog back then definitely gives away my anime and saturday morning cartoon consumption habits lol. As much as our old things make us cringe, you do gotta keep'm around though to measure how far we've come.

@@maelstormm Oh I see, honestly I think using a particle system can serve as good eye candy. Whenever I start working on my fangame, I might go a little crazy with them, like with vibrant colors, dynamic effects, and cool after images.
I feel like with most gamers, slopes are quite the hurdle to deal with. I think game engines like Godot can handle them well but with Gamemaker, there might be some hard work required.
Exactly! Actually, I might post live my original level pack, just to see how far I have come. There were some levels that looking back made me think, “Uh Why?” But I’m glad I improved upon them in the remix pack
Oh speaking of Newgrounds, have you tried out some popular games like Picos Dating Sim, Millie Megavolt (gotta cover that one), and I think there was one about Pico destroying a school?
It’s been ages since I looked around Newgrounds. I’m glad you can still play most games on there without having to use Flashpoint Infinity.

@@Firesawdust I haven't been back on newgrounds really in ages. Think last sizeable thing I did there was de-list my old stuff since no longer functioned correctly or was no longer needed. Only games I actively poke at these days is La Pucelle Tactics Ragnarok and FFXIV for a dungeon or two. Just no time to over indulge in side missions as much as I want to (Planet Crafter caught my eye though).
I am impressed though that despite Flash having died in browsers, communities like Newgrounds didn't miss a beat in keeping it going even without doing the Harmon Air conversion like I did. Saw a Josh Strife Hayes video recently pointing out how even that old Flash RPG 'Adventure Quest' is still actively kicking. Guess Flash was to big to fail since enough people wanted to make sure that content stayed alive, in a similar vein as console emulators do.
On the note of old content staying alive, since you rock some of these old MM fangames, Iragination's old games are still lurking and playable. I'm sure the ol' Mega Man vs Ghosts n Goblins and Metroid are there too.
(Sorry if this was double posted, didn't see the first post so redid it)

@@maelstormm I got to get back into the Final Fantasy series. The ones I managed to beat so far were Fantasy 1 and 3. I watched a youtuber named ClementJ64 who basically did a video for each Final Fantasy covering the plot, gameplay, frustration, and recaps. So far the games in the series that I am looking forward to playing would be Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, and 10. I have seen the ones past 10 yet lol. You should try Terraria, it's really good!
Man, takes me back. my memory of Adventure Quest is vague, but I remember playing it a lot with my brother and neighborhood friends between 2005 and 2009. I have to look at some refresher video, but the last thing I remember was you doing this quest that took about a day long, and I remember a few RPG aspects about it. Flash was a big hit on my childhood, and outside of the games I mentioned in my previous comment, I might cover some other flash games that were big hits on my childhood, even the janky Mario, Sonic, and Megaman games XD.
I plan on covering those games :).

Honestly back when it was on newgrounds/browser, I’m surprised I managed to beat the game. I wasn’t sure if it was because of pure persistence or if I looked at the creator’s walkthrough back then.
The music changes in this version caught me by surprise, there were some I liked from the original but some that were changed for the better. I wonder how these final boss fights are going to look in Remix. Jaguar and Next gave me a run for my money lol.

No. But watching the playthrough of it feels weird. Why is Classic Mega Man so Buff? plus the music of the quality is also bad, same goes to Roll Next which also has bad quality on the music

    • @maelstormm
      @maelstormm 10 місяців тому +1

@@retropixel1272 Where songs were outright swapped, was usually because wanted to stick with game music for more consistentcy and also even in their heavily compressed form, have gotten copyright slaps in the past. So it nipped two issues for me by changing. Few others over the course of making these old games alive again were swapped if I couldn't positively identify the source (MMXN stage select comes to mind).
I prefer for the more buff Mega from the Mega Man Cartoon and Mega Man 2 US box art, so after being rebuilt at the end there he's a fair bit more jacked which then rolled into how they were in the comic, at least when scribbled outside pixel form.
For the compression, it's a trip to the past. I don't know how old ye are or how much poking around music software you do but to take ye back to 2003 when I was poking at this, I worked with what Newgrounds and flash mainly would let me get away with. Also broadband wasn't really a mainstream thing so most folks still were rocking dial-up 56k. The age of AOL and punch the monkey flash banner ads. So files needed to be small, like ~3-5 MB or ideally a lot less. Also the resources to get sounds and all were much scarcer so teenage hobbyists like me had to make do with what we could get our hands on. Had to work with MP3's and Wave files since Flash wouldn't let you use NSF or other more efficient formats, which also wouldn't work for tracks with lyrics really since they were formatted differently to begin with. So MMN's music folder is around 90 MB, and that needed to be super squished to the above size limit including all the other stuff. MMXN and RN similarly got hit with the squishy hammer, in RN's case though since it was almost all vocal songs made things more tricky (RN's music folder is like 400 MB into a ~15 MB game in 2007). Was the challenge of the time making a full game instead of a stand alone level or game that heavily reused assets. For this recent revision, I let the filesize creep up a bit so it's now ~17 MB, but still want it to stay pretty true to the original so it needs to have all that heavy compression in there. For MMNR, even less worried about filesize as hosting costs, file size limits, compression methods, and internet speeds are substantially better.
Could things have been done better? Absolutely. But I'm just a dude on the internet with limited free time and resources who wanted to make a game despite having zero schooling or work training related to any aspect of game making. Ain't got no time to worry about other folk trying to hold me to more professional standards or criticize my design preferences, since just trying to hit my own growing expectations of my hobby has made MMNR take almost two decades to get where it is. Though thankfully once these old projects are off my plate, there's no shortage of software like Unreal and Unity to take most of the heavy lifting off my plate that wasn't around when I got into this stuff. Work work work...
