I don't know if they used it 'till '92 (when I was 23 and listening to the station still in the presence of my mother) but I feel like haven't heard that news sounder in 40 years! In either case it's been a long time!
Great to hear Klavan, lived on Long Island from 69 to 71 and listened every morning. Later I worked for an AM/FM in upstate NY that was owned by a relative of Dee Finch, and got to meet Finch Watched Kennelly early in his career on TV when he did sports for WNBF TV Binghamton NY
I remember hearing Klavin reporting on one morning's delays in the Long Island RR. He said that a particular train would be taken out of service, lifted from the tracks and turned into a planter.
yes! PLEASE SHARE - i have been searching for Klavin airchecks, all that i have heard is from his final year on 'NEW and one from WOR. also WHO has the TV ad Klavin did in mock-Italian for WNEW? it was on youtube like 10 years ago, not seen since...
@@EllisFeaster Okay. In an aircheck from 1973, they played Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water," and in a January '74 'check, they played "Jim Dandy" by Black Oak Arkansas, neither of which would remotely qualify as MOR or AC.

WNEW AM/FM/TV WOW! FM was 102.7, AM was 1130 and TV was Channel 5. Interesting! All owned by Metromedia Broadcasting I assume? I'm guessing there was seismic shift when Rupert Murdoch bought Metromedia Broadcasting from John Kluge, and turned Channel 5 into an O&O station of the then-new FOX network. Alogn with that came the call letter for Channel 5 WNYW! What happened to WNEW 1130AM and 102.7FM since Murdoch transformed channel 5?
As I recall, 1130 AM soldiered on until its sad demise in '92 and 'NEW-FM lasted until 2007 until they changed the call letters and format. In 2016 , they returned "WNEW-FM" into action but as a "hot adult contemparary" station - whatever that is! : But there was a lot of fanfare when WNEW-AM left in '92 all of it sad and nostalgic enough that even as a 23 year old I was affected by this end of an era. That "1940s" feel I associated with older relatives was being lost (along with the "automat" which finally left around then along with FW Woolsworth nationally) meant an end to an age. Yes, there was a "homey" /local feel (but also classy and "Big Town" feel to when Metromedia owned them. I was a big Channel 5 watcher growing up. It became more "network" and lost the sound , look and feel once Metromedia left town. I
@@EllisFeaster I remember seeing a tv commercial on WOR TV (when they still had that channel on my cable TV system, at the time,)..they advertised that Carol Miller was on the that radio station, at the time..I think it was ether in the early, or late 80's
Had no idea Frank Settipani got his start at NEW! I loved hearing him on the CBS Radio Network as a kid, always loved his voice
I always thought he had a great delivery as well.
Frank Settipani began his radio career at WGBB in Freeport, Long Island in the Mid-60s.
That news sounder was used on WNEW for years.

thank you so much for this video...miss wnew sooo much from the 70s
Glad you enjoyed it. I miss them too.
Great memories of the great WNEW AM...thanks for sharing Ellis!
Glad you enjoyed it!
At the time, WNEW-AM 1130 broadcast New York Rangers and Knicks games. John Kennelly was previously the sports anchor at WJZ-TV 13 in Baltimore.

Klavan was a maniac . . . a great maniac!!! Too bad this aircheck had hardly any of Gene.
1250? There were at 1130 with 50,000 24/7.
Anytime, any place, N-E-W. WNEW Your Metromedia station in New York. How ‘bout some Willie B, Ellis B?
I don’t have any. I wish I did. If somebody will get me a William B Williams Aircheck, I’ll quickly post it.
Posting 4-16-21. Isn't 1130 in NYC now WBBR, with a business format?
That’s it!
@@EllisFeaster Thanks, I thought so.
@@EllisFeaster Was WNBC-AM a Top 40 station, as opposed to MOR?
@@TheBrooklynbodine it depends on when you are talking about. WNBC had an MOR era, an AC era, as well as a Top 40 era.
