  • WNEW 1130 New York - Gene Klavan - August 4 1975 - Radio Aircheck
    From the Kevin Fennessy Collection.
Gene Klavan was part of the 1130 WNEW morning show from 1952, until 1977. In the 1950s & 1960s, he hosted with his partner Dee Finch. Klavan & Finch were wildly popular. They improvised the popular four-hour program, which featured wacky characters like Mrs. Wes Chester, Sy Kology, Trevor Traffic, Mr Nat and Victor Verse. After Dee Finch retired, Klavan hosted the show alone, from 1968, until 1977. This aircheck is from the final years of the Gene Klavan Program, before the show left WNEW, and moved to 710 WOR where Gene hosted afternoons, to compliment WOR’s longtime morning show, Rambling with Gambling.
Feel free to check out some of the many other videos on the Ellis B Feaster's Radio Channel! Established in 2008! One of You Tube's oldest RADIO AIRCHECK MUSEUM with a NEW VIDEO posted daily at 3PM EST.
After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of radio airchecks, and many from my friends as well. You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away. Lots radio recordings from the 1940s, through the 2010.
We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here! If you are on the radio, or do voiceovers for You Tube videos, I have tips to make your radio show or video voiceovers better!

I grew up with this station too. Gene Klaven was a riot! Dee Finch was hilarious too. The music appealed more to my parents. Let Klaven invest my money? It's sometimes hard to know when he smoothly slips a joke in!

Minor point: this was actually recorded on Tuesday, August 5th, 1975. The sports recap refers to a Met game the previous night, which was August 4th.

At 12:40, one of the most unforgettable voices of NYC radio in the 70s. Not exactly the most resonant voice but once you heard it you never forgot it.

Many folks tend to scoff at WNEW's MOR period. It was perfect for its time and still had certain elements which linked to the all standards format. Klavan was perfect in this format and didn't "worship" certain artists and music as did others on the station. Hearing Diana Ross and the Supremes and 10CC on 1130 may have been jarring to the old WNEW faithful, but it was the correct move by 1975. The "old" WNEW was being challenged by the beautiful music stations on FM. Unfortunately, not very long after, Klavan left for afternoons on WOR.

Gene Klavan, his many voices and his famous characters like Dr. Seymour Chology ( call me Sy) were an absolute laugh riot. Thanks for the memories.

The great Bob Hagen handling the news. He went on to do mornings on 1010 WINS after the demise of WNEW.

Wow, I have many memories of listening to Klavan and WNEW. Gene was like Dan Ingram - he did everything and in his slower paced was just as funny. Gene’s next gig after WOR was morning movie host on AMC. WNEW was iconic from the thirties to the sixties. Glenn Miller, Charlie Barnet and Les Brown all had songs written for WNEW during the big band era during 1130’s golden age. Thank you again, Ellis, for making me remember and documenting rare air checks.

The crazy thing about this aircheck was how the call letters were only mentioned once by Klavan in a 30 minute span, and that was only to give an address for a contest. There was one WNEW jingle between spots and one WNEW jingle into 10cc at the end of the aircheck. Otherwise the station’s name was never mentioned after the newscast. And PPM wasn’t even around yet, LOL! The whole thing sounded so sloppy. I guess I was used to the more regimented sound of Klavan’s competition: John Gambling and Harry Harrison…

Klavan was kind of sloppy, but it worked for him, and produced big ratings. The show was totally ad-libed. Clients would pay big money to have Klavan mangle their live spots. It definitely was a one of a kind sound, that many New Yorkers loved. Once William B Williams arrived at 10, he would make the station sound more professional & class up the joint.

@@EllisFeaster oh I know. It just sounds so strange after years of hearing stations sounding tight and mentioning the station name every time they open the mic, and talking over the intros to the songs. I know Howard Stern didn’t do any of that stuff either, but he ran 15 minute stop sets, which enabled him to do his “schtick” at a more relaxed pace. Klavan’s show sounded like it was mostly spots, while the music and comedy was thrown in when there were a few seconds to spare! And that was the 9:00 hour! I wonder what the 7:00 hour sounded like! 😁

And of Ross Klavan, a former 1010 WINS writer, editor and reporter - and once married to one of that station's first female anchors, Kate Doordan. (You can hear Ross' reportage elsewhere on YT in the form of a set of airchecks of WINS' coverage of the capture of the "Son of Sam.")

Barely 3 songs the entire time of this video, most listeners would've switched stations for better programming

    • @EllisFeaster

It was a different era back then. Listeners were not listening for 12 songs in a row. They wanted companionship. The personality on the air (if he was good) was just as important as the music. You have to think the NY listeners must have liked it, or Klavan would NOT have been a market leader for a quarter century!

He left in 1977, after 25 years at WNEW. He wen’t crosstown to do afternoons at WOR. I assumed WOR paid him a ton to help give Rambling With Gambling an edge over WNEW. And perhaps Klavan was tired decades of getting up at 3:30 AM.
