  • -Marv Albert and Sal Messina call Game 1 of the 1975 first round playoffs between the Islanders and Rangers. Reception is occasionally a little weak since this is a recording of flagship station WNEW done in the Albany area.

    Had to listen to many Rangers games in those pre Cable television days. We didn’t get Cablevision in our area until February of ‘78.
    Marv was the best.

    I love how the reception fades in and out; reminds me of trying to tune in far-away AM stations when I was a kid.

    Marv best play by play announcer in hockey ever. You knew exactly what was going on without seeing it

      Yup. The flare and tail of his voice when he said "BASS" is definitely reminiscent of Marv.

    Fun Fact: Chuck D of Public Enemy said that he tailored his rapping style after Marv Albert calling Islander’s hockey. For someone who shudders like I do, both these two are nothing short of amazing.

    This series had one organist-Toby Wright. He played for both the Rangers and Islanders when the NHL did not schedule both teams home at the same time.

    If the NHL had moved to TNT, ESPN and ABC, 10 years ago, then Marv Albert would’ve been broadcasting some Ranger games on TNT and Versus in the booth with Joe Micheletti and in fact, doing part time there and Doc Emrick and Eddie Olczyk would’ve been the main TNT and Versus booth announcers at the time. Not only that, but Jiggs McDonald would’ve broadcasted play-by-play, part time, as well on TNT and Versus. Also, Versus would’ve never merged in with NBC and would’ve instead, been sold to Turner Networks and the NHL on Versus would’ve therefore, continued. Not to mention, Gary Thorne and Bill Clement would’ve been the main booth announcers on ESPN and ABC and Doc and Ray Ferraro would’ve done part time on ESPN and ABC and so would Steve Levy and Darren Pang. Not to mention, Dave Strader would’ve done part time on TNT, Versus, ESPN and ABC.

      Some reel to reels surfaced that included this and Game 3 (also Rangers broadcast) which will be uploaded in the future but not right away. I've been finding more Rangers radio in the 74-76 bracket (along with Knicks). I do have one Isles broadcast partial from 1977 against the Rangers I still need to upload.

    • @chrisdennehy9425
      @chrisdennehy9425 6 років тому +1

      Sounds great, BTW, you might have billed this Islanders at Rangers upload as a "2-for-1" as periodically during the 1130 WNEW-AM broadcast I hear the dulcet tones of legendary St. Louis Blues broadcaster Dan Kelly bleeding in over KMOX 1120 AM, the powerful, fifty-thousand watt clear channel airer of that team's games (the Blues were playing at Pittsburgh that night in the opener of their own 2-of-3 series).

      @@epaddon You said some of the reels had surfaced recently? From where? Where you the one who found them? I'm asking because I collect nhl videos and I wonder if contacting the team or tv station would help or if they would shut you down. I'm not talking about any team in particular, just in general. Any advice?

    • @epaddon
      @epaddon  4 роки тому

      @@alspencer3826 These were home reel to reel recordings by someone in the Albany area. Tons of Yankees, Mets material from the 70s to early 90s mixed in with Rangers and Knicks in the 72-75 bracket basically. The estate lots of reel to reel tapes were unloaded on ebay over a multi-year period and I was lucky to end up with about 95% of them. E-bay auctions of different estate lots also yielded other things like some minor league hockey from the late 60s and early 70s of the CHL.

    this was a shocker. 2- goal rangers third period lead wiped out.

    • @davidlahn7390
      @davidlahn7390 5 років тому +1

      The core D of Neilsen, Seiling and Rolfe gone. Young Greschner, journey man Nick Beverly, Park that's all they had on D. So not that shocking to what would develop in the decade to follow for Islanders.

    • @dzanier
      @dzanier 5 років тому +2

      @@davidlahn7390 The Islanders had a superior defense but the Ranger forwards were more talented than the Isles. At the time it felt like a shocker, but given what would happen the rest of the playoffs and up until 1984, it was no shock at all.
