60's Bonds are the reason why the franchise is still strong today. The whole backbone of the 26 movies is in those few films. Dr. No From Russia with Love (Connery's own favorite one) Goldfinger (the one that made James Bond an international sensation) Thunderball and You Only Live Twice, the one with the most elaborate vilain's lair.
I think 'Goldfinger' is my favorite James Bond movie as the villains get better. It was released two years after Dr. No. Sean Connery would go on to portray the role for another 10 years before Roger Moore took over as James Bond. It was said that Sean Connery would NEVER play the role of James Bond again, but Connery came back as Bond in the 1983. What Connery said inspired producers to name the movie 'Never Say Never Again'. And wow, I'd forgot Jack Lord was in this movie who plays Felix Leiter the CIA. He would go on to star in the popular show Hawaii Five 0 for 12 seasons from 1968-1980.
James Bond is a book character created by Ian Fleming so the films are adaptations of the books so they have to go with the title of books for the films as well great reaction these films are funny action packed with amazing stunts my favorite James Bond’s are Sean Connery Roger Moore and Pierce Bronson you are so beautiful
The films get a little better as they go. Bond's lore, and tropes, are added with every film until Gold Finger. Gold Finger is when all the James Bond tropes crystallize into every thing we know and love about James Bond films.
12:30 They didn't have green screen when this movie was made (it was originally a blue screen, BTW) That's a rear projection movie screen in the background.
The next one is actually my favourite of the series, From Russia With Love. But most people's favourite of Sean Connery's is the 3rd one, Goldfinger. It sets up all the troupes for the entire series. But this is where it all began, from a cinematic perspective. From the moment Connery is first introduced as James Bond, or introduces himself, he's electric. He's the guy. He's effortlessly suave and cool, but he can be tough and badass when he needs to be. Some Bond actors have needed a film or 2 to really get into the role and embody the character, but Sean, being the first, never did. He set the standard. The 1950s classic suits, the actual detective work, the drinks. It's all there. But it goes up a few notches for the next one.
This isn't the 1st reaction of yours I've watched (Not even close). Your reaction to the spider part had me laughing. Next level! You'll really James Bond going forward. Next up "From Russia with Love" will NOT disappoint.
Silvia Trench is the only Bond girl to make a return in a second film. This is also the film that introduced the Bikini. The white bikini worn by Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder in the 1962 James Bond film, Dr. No, is cited as the most famous bikini of all time and an iconic moment in cinematic and fashion history.
Something about the older films, so willing to take their time in the storytelling.. You gotta get into some Alfred Hitchcock soon.. 'Strangers on a Train', 'Rope', 'Rear Window' all fire 🔥
One interesting aspect of the James Bond franchise is how they act as time capsules, very much reflecting the cultures of the day. The first several films were made during the height of the Cold War so they have a much more grounded espionage framework. As the franchise grew, and the producers began to clue in on what made the films popular the series began to have very stylistic and thematic tropes. It's funny how you were drawing comparisons with super hero films because James Bond isn't a super hero, although Daniel Craig was quite successful at transforming Bond into more of a modern action hero. The Bond of the 60s was fairly serious, the 70s incarnation became a bit more lighthearted and exploitative and this lasted into the 80s and as interest waned in the 90s the producers went back to what made Bond iconic in the first place - more serious and much darker. Roger Moore who had the longest run as the character was potentially a competitor against Sean Connery for the role originally but his commitment to "The Saint" a British crime drama put a pin in that; he'd later don the mantle when Connery left.
phew, you look stunning in this video! 😍😍😍😍🤩 I hope you continue with Bond, I have seen every single movie!! As the movies get more and more modern, they adopt a more modern pace. 🙂
That was HILARIOUS! And so much fun! I never know what's going on in these James Bond movies, plot-wise, don't give yourself a headache. They're just excuses to go from sequence to sequence, joke to joke! They get better with each one, for a while. I love Thunderball, many love Goldfinger, the next one is From Russia With Love. This will be a lot of fun! You are a PERFECT James Bond reactor! Love how you love the music, I'm the same exact way! :P
PS: DEFINITELY Sean Connery is my favorite Bond, hands down. He's the original, and you can never duplicate the original! Easy on the eyes, right? These movies are like a parade of good looking people, lol. Definitely do the next three or four, the original ones with Connery.
You should know, back in the day, when they did traveling scene like the one in Dr. No the background was called a travel mat. It was a film projected on a screen behind the vehicle while the vehicle was rocked back and forth.
This was the first movie of the bunch. It had a small budget and the guy in charge of the score didn't realize the theme was iconic. The films just get better from here. Goldfinger is my favorite.
12:30 that's not green screen that's rear projection. That's where the actors sits in a prop car in front of a white screen and they projected the scene behind the actor.
I don't think they knew how iconic the theme would be and wanted that final explosion to be diegetic, but you're right that would've been great to hear that at that moment. Oh, and thanks for wearing that Bond girl outfit because as your reaction came on as I was sitting down I swooned and fell face first into my coffee table. Are you doing all the Bond films? Next time I'll prepare. Great reaction, Blend, Californiablend. ❤
I agree the rear projection (it isn't a blue or green screen compositing) is pretty bad but keep in mind it was a) 1962 & b) this film was made for a paltry 1 million dollars. Personally, I think it was done pretty well!
As a lifelong Bond fanatic, I automatically hit play on all reactors who make Bond films' reaction videos. Connery is one of the best (I personally tie him with Daniel Craig for the best). Ian Fleming, who wrote the novels, used a family member (by marriage) as one of the inspirations for James Bond. Fleming and his cousin, Sir Christopher Lee (Saruman the White in LOTR and Count Dooku in the Star Wars prequels), were in British Intelligence during World War II. Bond shares a few attributes with his creator, but a lot of Bond's elegant panache is Lee. Unfortunately, many of the files of Lee's exploits for His Majesty's government during the war are still top secret. So, we don't know all of what he did, but he was like Bond in real life for a time. Fleming tried to get the producers of the films to look at Lee to play 007, but they didn't want to. Ironically, Lee later played one of the Bond villains, Francisco Scaramanga, aka The Man With the Golden Gun, opposite Roger Moore as Bond in 1974. As for Connery, he had very few screen credits and no hits when he was cast as Bond. However, by the time of Goldfinger, Connery was a superstar. Besides the Bond films he made for EON Productions (under Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman), he made an unofficial Bond film in the 1980s called Never Say Never Again. Many Bond fans have a fun theory that he made the last unofficial Bond film when he played John Patrick Mason in the thriller The Rock in 1996 because Mason is an awful lot like Bond. I personally love the theory and want it to be true. And yes, he can sing. One of his first jobs was playing a US sailor in the classic musical South Pacific in London's West End, and he did a live action Disney musical called Darby O'Giil and the Little People before he played Bond. There are a few other films he sings in briefly. Besides Connery, two other cast members in this film are part of the 007 Legacy Cast. In the role of M (Admiral Sir Miles Messervy, head of MI6, M stands for Missions), Bond's boss is Bernard Lee, who played M until 1981 when he passed away before filming For Your Eyes Only (1981). In the role of Miss Moneypenny, M's assistant (then secretary) is Lois Maxwell, who played the role until 1986's A View To A Kill, which was also the last Roger Moore Bond film. There are others, but they show up later.
Just came across your UA-cam channel for the first time when I saw your thumbnail for Dr. No., and I’ve instantly subscribed. I’m from the UK and have been a massive Bond fan since the age of 6, when my dad took me to see my first Bond film, Diamonds are Forever, at the age of 7 in 1971. Glad you enjoyed the first James Bond film! When Dr. No was released, it had only been 17 years since the Second World War had ended, and people around the world (but especially in the UK), were ready to see foreign locales that they couldn’t ever dream (or afford) to visit at that time, so the travel aspect in the Bond films gave audiences a flavour of what life could be like abroad. The budget for the film, in 1962 was $1M (equivalent to about $10.3M today), which wasn’t a lot for a film company like United Artists (who were funding the film), but it was a slight risk on their part that they might not see any profit from that expenditure if the film tanked at the box office. Bond’s creator Ian Fleming wasn’t initially happy with the choice of Connery as Bond (he favoured someone more debonair like David Niven), but upon seeing the finished film, and the next one in the series, From Russia with Love, he came around to the idea that Connery was the right actor after all. So sad Fleming didn’t get to see the finished 3rd Bond film, Goldfinger, released in September 1964, having succumbed to a fatal heart attack, one month before on August 12th. Dr. No was the 6th Bond novel, published in 1958, but wasn’t the original 1st choice to be the 1st James Bond film. That was meant to be the 9th novel, Thunderball, published in 1961, but that story got tied up in a court battle as to who truly owned the rights to the screenplay, so Dr. No was chosen instead. Interesting that you like the music. You’re probably referring to the Jamaican Calypso music, as the original score by Monty Norman is not a fan favourite. Norman did give us The James Bond Theme, which was reworked by John Barry into a powerhouse guitar and horns piece that truly captured the essence of who James Bond was, and how dangerous his missions could be. John Barry would score the next film, From Russia with Love, and a further 10 more Bond films over the next 24 years and he is regarded as the best ever Bond composer. Dr. No doesn’t, as the 1st film, completely nail down the ‘Bond formula’ (which would add to the series as a whole and which would allow the series to go on as a worldwide cinematic phenomenon), but there are elements in it that would carry on into the 2nd film and beyond: Bond bedding three, sometimes four girls in each film, the globetrotting, the gadgets, the touches of sadism, the humour (most of which was missing from the books), the wonderful main Bond girls, dripping with beauty and sexuality, the Bond villains with their bonkers plots of controlling or destroying the world (or for their own personal gain), and not forgetting the amazing set designs, courtesy in the 1960’s and 1970’s by production designer Ken Adam. All of these elements were usually wrapped up in wonderful witty and suspenseful screenplays, many of which were written by the American screenwriter, Richard Mailabum, who wrote (or co-wrote) 13 Bond screenplays (starting with Dr. No.) In fact, the success of the early Bond films were down to a core number of people behind the camera. Dr. No’s British Director, Terence Young (who acted like Bond off set and gave pointers to Connery in how to be suave and sophisticated), John Barry and Richard Maibaum (both of whom I’ve already mentioned) and last, but not least, British film editor Peter Hunt, who’s fast cut editing (especially in the fight and action scenes) was new and original in 1962, and helped make British made films like the Bond series more palatable to American and other foreign audiences who had been used to long, master shots of scenes in films that held on for too long and slowed the pace of the film down enormously. All of these people, and their talents would only get better as the Bond series progressed and much of the action, humour and foreign locale adventure that is common place now with series like the Mission Impossible films, owe their debt and thanks to the 1st film that started it all: Dr. No. Hope you will be watching all of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s Bond films, starting with the 2nd film in the series, From Russia with Love (1963) which was given a higher budget and is less fantastical than Dr. No, being more of a straight spy film. It is generally regarded by most Bond fans to be a better film, story wise than Dr. No. Connery is much more assured in his 2nd Bond movie and it clearly shows in his on screen presence. This is also the 1st film to properly introduce SPECTRE as a working criminal organisation as well as showing (or not showing too much on screen) its leader and Bond’s arch nemesis, Ernst Stavro Blofeld! Oh, and if you were disappointed that there wasn’t enough of the James Bond theme in Dr. No., well, you won’t be upset to learn there’s a lot of it in the 2nd film.
The traditional Bond theme didn't get established as the most liked part of these movie scores until a little later in the series. They were still testing things out with the first couple films.
You are the best!! I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction! It's wonderful to see a lovely, young person like yourself really enjoying this classic film! Regarding the amount of times they played (or didn't play) the theme song, this was the very first Bond film, so they had not fully established all the classic tropes and queues that we came to expect (and celebrate) from the franchise. Please watch all the Bond films (even the semi-silly ones, haha)! Keep going!
Always fun to see someone starting their journey into the 007 universe. I hope you'll enjoy all of them, even the stupid ones, and that you stick it out through the whole thing because there are some really amazing films in this series.
I think you’ll get the best enjoyment out of Bond if you watch all the films in order, there is a lot of character development that you’ll miss if you jump around 😊
Well, I must say you definitely look the part for this reaction, I can certainly imagine you as a 'Bond Girl'. I hope that you do continue with the Bond films, as the next few are a big improvement in my opinion, and I'm sure that you'll enjoy them, and I'll enjoy watching your reaction to them as I did with this one.
It was common practice during this time period to shoot day for night exactly as you thought . Also the car chase didn't use green screen because it hadn't been invented. The scene was shot using rear screen projection.
Gabby, I'm glad you didn't let the age of the film distract you from the good parts of the story. I laughed when you said you watched Matlock, etc. I didn't expect that, I liked Matlock too back in the day. I think it's good though to appreciate older TV and movies, even if the special effects aren't great, because imo it's really about the writing and acting. That's why it's good to see a play every once in awhile, where you already know it's not about how realistic the effects are. I think some people get spoiled with all the cgi there is today, it's good to let your brain do some of the work and stretch that suspension of disbelief as far as it will go. Great reaction, as usual! BTW Roger Moore is my favorite James Bond, but it's a close tie with Sean Connery, who is an amazing Bond! But you got to watch Moore in "Live and Let Die"! 🔥💀🔥
We have to assume that this was low budget compared to the ones that came after it. The franchise hadn't found its footing until you get to Goldfinger. That's the one that set the tone for the franchise through the decades. The next one, From Russia with Love, is not a bad movie, its more spy vs. spy stuff. What you would expect from a spy movie. You get more gadgets, but not the as much as say Goldfinger.
Like you, I am no fan of spiders. When I play "Dr. No" I generally fast forward through the part with the tarantula. Can't wait to see your reaction to "From Russia With Love". Many consider Robert Shaw to be one of James Bond's most formidable enemies. And then it's on to "Goldfinger", the movie that put James Bond on top of the movie world. Can you say DB5.
You have a vintage look! Very creative 👌 About the Bond theme not being used at the right moment. They weren't as good in the past as they are today. But the Bond theme is so so good.
Thank you for this reaction Californiablend! The Bruce Lee Kung Fu movie "Enter the Dragon" was strongly influenced by James Bond movies in general, and by "Doctor No" most of all. Later, the parody movie "Balls of Fury" parodies both "Doctor No" and "Enter the Dragon". It would be wonderful if you would follow up and react to "Enter the Dragon" and then "Balls of Fury"!
There's a man who leads a life of danger. To everyone he meets he stays a stranger. Every move he makes is another chance he takes. The odds are he won't live to see tomorrow; Secret Agent Man!
Ms CaliforniaBlend you’ll have to forgive them for not playing the Bond theme during that scene at the end. They were still perfecting the Bond movie formula at that time. I commend you on starting your James Bond journey at the very beginning. It was a very bold decision. I hope you continue. Also, I hope you can forgive me but I must also mention that you look incredibly beautiful…as you always do.
Here are some other 007 movies I recommend you watch/react to: Gold finger From Russia with Love You only Live Twice Thunderball On her majesty's secret service Live and let die A view to a kill Skyfall No Time to Die
I've noticed the filming night scenes during the day with a filter a lot over recent years with a lot of older films and TV shows from the 70's and 80's as well. It makes me wonder if people didn't notice back then or they just suspended disbelief because it was so common.
You look so gorgeous today, girlfriend! Such classic beauty ❤ You know what I just realized is that, you low-key look like a young version of the woman who plays the Gameshow Host on that 90s showhg6h hmm yYour Jamaican accent is so great! You always have me cracking up.
I'm sorry but how do you manage to have so many different "looks" and make them all stunning! Seriously, I don't intend to come off as a creeper. More importantly, though, your reactions are always so much fun, and that definitely adds to the charm! I'm at the spider portion of the reaction btw 😁
Äh, ja... She was actually from Switzerland. And they speak a very unique kind of German, which is for a average German, not understandable. Greetings from Germany

And Diamonds are Forever? lol
Felix Leiter was played by Jack Lord who later played McGarrett in the classic Hawaii Five-0.
I met him and Dano in Hawaii at a Military picnic in 1969 while visiting my father for the summer. Pretty exciting for a fifteen year old.
Sean Connery is still my fav James Bond ...
Oh definitely!!

Never say never again absolutely blows. All the action scenes that are good are in the beginning and then it’s revealed to all be practice

Recently rewatched the entire franchise.
Even in this movie I see James Bond as more of an anti-hero than a traditional heroic protagonist.
I guess "Dr. No" sounded more impactful. Plus, the movie is based on the 1958 novel by the same name.
Wow that's an elegant look on you!
Back then it wasn’t green screen, it was rear projection. They played the background on a screen and filmed the scene.
Rear projection screens were made of tiny glass beads, so you could project from behind and the beads would refract it.

No.)
In fact, the success of the early Bond films were down to a core number of people behind the camera.
The spider seen and her reaction had me dying 😂😂😂❤
The traditional Bond theme didn't get established as the most liked part of these movie scores until a little later in the series. They were still testing things out with the first couple films.
can't wait to see you're reactions of the other james bond movies
You are the best!! I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction! It's wonderful to see a lovely, young person like yourself really enjoying this classic film! Regarding the amount of times they played (or didn't play) the theme song, this was the very first Bond film, so they had not fully established all the classic tropes and queues that we came to expect (and celebrate) from the franchise. Please watch all the Bond films (even the semi-silly ones, haha)! Keep going!
Shooting day for night was a pretty common technique for the time. As film stock got better it became less necessary.
You are simply adorable! Love your reactions... Dr. Max
You look very elegant today, nice! Love them pearlies!!😊
Haha. You called it right, by accident. The lighting technique is called Day for Night.
Always fun to see someone starting their journey into the 007 universe. I hope you'll enjoy all of them, even the stupid ones, and that you stick it out through the whole thing because there are some really amazing films in this series.
Goddamit you sure enjoy your movies! Great reaction. Thank you.
As I said a few years ago "I absolutely love your energy."
🌞🤩🙌👍
I think you’ll get the best enjoyment out of Bond if you watch all the films in order, there is a lot of character development that you’ll miss if you jump around 😊
Your image in front of the big screen: FANTASTIC! Great energy in your reviews (New Sub)
Playing the theme song in minute situations and not more climatic ones is often complained about with the first two movies. It gets better.
They did play some of the theme during the short closing credits.
Sean: sexieat man alive. Was in the Mr Universe contest as a bodybuilder, little did he know he could've won with his voice.
I LOVE JAMES BOND MOVIES AND I LOVE YOUR AWESOME CHANNEL AND YOUR REACTIONS MY BEAUTIFUL FINE QUEEN 👑💓💓💓💓 AWESOME MOVIE 🎥
It was common practice during this time period to shoot day for night exactly as you thought
Great you enjoyed this! Hopefully you'll enjoy the other Bond films coming up! Goldfinger is one you will definitely enjoy!
As for use of the theme song, This was the first movie, They were still ironing out the formula X)
It’s called Dr no because that’s the name of the book.
Dressed like Holly Golightly. 🔥
They get the formula that worked and lasted down by Goldfinger.
Not only are you starting the James Bond franchise, but you mention enjoying Columbo?? I just fell in love a little bit ❤❤❤
There's a man who leads a life of danger. To everyone he meets he stays a stranger. Every move he makes is another chance he takes. The odds are he won't live to see tomorrow; Secret Agent Man!
All James Bond movies have titles. But people always say hey are you gonna go see James Bond in theaters.
Easily one of your best reviews. Keep up the good work!
The theme song was played in the end credits
I can see you dressed the part for this reaction
You look like a bond girl yourself with those pearls
Awesome reaction
Here are some other 007 movies I recommend you watch/react to:
Gold finger
From Russia with Love
You only Live Twice
Thunderball
On her majesty's secret service
Live and let die
A view to a kill
Skyfall
No Time to Die
I've noticed the filming night scenes during the day with a filter a lot over recent years with a lot of older films and TV shows from the 70's and 80's as well. It makes me wonder if people didn't notice back then or they just suspended disbelief because it was so common.
Great reaction! Watch the entire Sean Connery Bond movies; you're going to enjoy them.
Thank so much!
You should be the next bond girl wow
FYI I read that Ursula Andres's' voice was dubbed by a French actress as Ursula had a deep German accent that was too bad.
Äh, ja... She was actually from Switzerland. And they speak a very unique kind of German, which is for a average German, not understandable. Greetings from Germany
Yes, not only James Bond, but one of the better ones. How did you know.
