In the books it was finally postulated that the end result was the Zeroth Law-- in essence--a robot cannot through action or inaction cause humanity to come to harm, so harming a human or humans in order to preserve humanity as a species would be allowed. Viki was operating on this logic.
Fun info: the Isaac Asimov book "I, Robot" is a collection of short stories set in a future where these Three-Laws Compliant robots exist, and the stories tend to explore the various flaws and gaps in the Three Laws.
Spooner's robotic arm would need a lot of energy to be able to work properly, so he powers it through the massive amount of calories and sugar from the pies he constantly noshes on. His body is also significantly reinforced, going well beyond a mere replacement arm. He has several synthetic ribs and an artificial lung, most likely to make sure the arm doesn't tear right off his body when swung at full strength.
It's funny that you said "He dreams electronic sheep" 17:21 because the movie "Blade Runner" is based on the novel "Do Androids dream Of Electric Sheep". Just in case you will one day react to Blade Runner, No spoliers, but I will prepare you by saying it's not really an "action" movie.
You know what? I love how you watched this movie seriously in such a fun way. It made it fun to watch too, which I never thought I'd do with this movie. 29:47 is definitely a highlight. One of the best reactor's reactions to Sunny's wink.

This movie felt like both a more respectful Hollywood adaption of Ghost In The Shell (along with the Matrix, compared to the actual Ghost in the Shell adaption), and what the Matrix would've felt like if Will Smith accepted the role for it instead of going for Wild Wild West instead. Still have alot of fond nostalgia for this movie
I definitely think robots are going to be apart of every person's daily life/ mainly because in the past everyone was thinking about putting a computer in a person's home and now it's completely normal.

Yea with AI and such I wonder how the future looks, we ben complaining for so long about how imperfect humas are but do we really want a world of constant perfection? I don't think I do. TFS Friend!
The first science fiction anthology I read. I became an instant Asimov fan. I've read and have all his books including his science FACT books. When Russia put the first satellite in orbit he said he was going to stop writing fiction until the U.S. caught up. I, Robot. Great book, great film. Your analysis was great!!! Not just a reaction. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
Sonny was played by Alan Tudyk - "Wash" from Firefly and "Steve The Pirate" from Dodgeball - who repeated the motion-capture process a few years later to play another robot: K-2SO in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Also, VERY LITTLE of this movie came from Asimov's series of short stories that make up the iRobot series. The original screenplay was a detective murder mystery that has no connection to Asimov at all, and was originally intended to be a much lower-budget movie. But then the studio acquired the rights to the iRobot stories, and when Will Smith came on board, they grafted a few elements from the iRobot stories onto the murder mystery and made all of the action bigger, with a whole lot more robots involved, to make it a big-budget Will Smith action movie. And while Asimov readers tend not to like the movie because there isn't much Asimov in it, it's still a pretty great popcorn movie IMO. The "science" in the Sci-Fi isn't very deep or overly thought-provoking, but not every project has to be. We need fun popcorn action movies too!
It'a amazing how this 20 y.o. movie so accurately predicted today's billboard screens, self-driving cars & humanity's fear & distrust of AI. PS - your reaction @ 6:25 - I love it 😆😆😆
I always look at this movie as if it takes place in the same world as terminator and/or The Matrix just depending on the stage of the war. It’s just my head canon
Of course we will reach what we see in science fiction today, we see in our world now when this same question was first asked 100 years ago with Trip to the Moon.
Yep, always expecting progress to happen more rapid than it actually does lol. Mind you, 2050 seem possible with how driverless cars are coming along and with how quickly A.I. and robotics, I can imagine A.I. being everywhere over the next decade or so and it's likely robotics could start showing up over the next decade, in small numbers at first but that will rapidly expand with the usefulness of them, a lot can happen in 26 years, especially as A.I. will likely speed up progress in all areas. Will also be interesting to see how we humans respond to all this rapid change, we are not usually good at rapid change and quite hostile to job losses lol.
OK, I prefer the books, but the books-vs.-film comparison is more complicated. Basically, the books are more philosophical and thought-provoking, i.e., not cinematic enough for a visual medium. Thus, I can’t blame Hollywood for putting more narrative meat on the bones. I like the film, but I wish they hadn’t called it “I, Robot” to avoid confusion with the books. They could’ve use Asimov’s Three Rules with a different title, as the rules are cited often in other sci-fi universes, particularly films/TV/books about robotic/AI stuff.
Classic Sci-Fi reader huh? Many of the founding fathers of Sci-Fi were involved in the Space industry in some way. Many worked for NASA. Many were written at the height of the Space Race, and before the Moon landings. They tended to be adventures that happened to have a space setting. They were heavy on the science. The two I'd start with, is Isaac Asimov, and Robert Heinlein. Older novels tend to move at a slower pace, but they're always a fascinating look at a potential future from the past.
Huh, funny how Detective Blend ends up dropping a reaction to I, Robot on UA-cam the same day Mary Cherry does. 😄 You both ended up noticing the call-back with Sonny making a decision based on emotion instead of the logical one in the climax, too. Have you watched 2001: A Space Odyssey yet? If so, you may notice certain ... similarities between them.
Hi there! First time watching one of your reactions. I've watched iRobot hundreds of times (not an exaggeration) and I really enjoyed this reaction and your thoughts at the end.
I believe that intelligent people who develop AI and robots should also teach them properly. The problem will arise when they are filled with data from fools, as most people are. For these reasons, in the past, AIs that competed against other AIs became aggressive and ended up destroying each other. A well-known example is an experiment by OpenAI in 2017, where AI agents could either cooperate or compete in a game. As resources became scarce, some agents developed aggressive behavior, leading to conflicts.
Great film! I agree Audi needs to make that car. I owned an S6 and need this upgrade! I've been in I.T. for 35 years. I've programmed professionally, designed systems, provided support, and I can tell you unequivocally... I am not at all concerned about the increased in AI. I'm much more concerned about the decrease in human intelligence.
At the risk of this being skimmed over as yet another "the book is better than the movie" comments.......you need to read the novel by Isaac Assimov. He was one of the founding fathers of Sci-Fi novels when they were just fiction novels that happened to be set in space. They invented the genre. This novel is fantastic, but it's very different to this movie. This movie is only ONE of the short stories told in the novel. If I remember correct, the premise is that she is retiring after a lifetime in robotics, and gives her memoirs to a journalist. It is pretty faithful to the source material though, from what I remember.

Imagine having a wedding and getting married to your Ai partner… (this is Murphy’s Law) I love the movie called “Her” with Joaquin Phoenix, he falls in love with his Ai system [🤖❤️😊]
I wouldn't be surprised if the world is similar to this in about 10yrs, AI and everything has taken off the past year. Also, has anyone ever told you, you look like Sierra Capri? lol y'all could be twins
The book is somewhat different than this movie but it's a short read in which Dr. Calvin isn't anywhere as caring or engaging as this Hollywood adaptation. Hollywood always embellishes, exaggerates or completely fabricates movie plots, for instance, "Schindler's List" was a 100% fabricated movie plot but it got people teary eyed watching it. It all gets down to entertainment.
if you havent already, you should read Nightfall by Isaac Asimov and also watch some of the videos about deepmind AI been taught to play Starcraft(RTS game) and went on to beat the top players of the world. It learned from its mistakes, learning what units to build in order to counter the enemy units and ended up setting ambushes to the human players and win. Somehow teaching an AI how to manage resources to build an army of robots feels like its going to come back to bite us :) thanks for sharing your reaction!!
Isn't it about what we input into the AI? Will AI be programmed with morals, nuance, and objectivity? I think these are just some of the questions needing answers. Also, how much authority will we give them and will they have a desire to rule?
Let's be clear, Gabi, the novel is very different of the movie. The characters, in particular Susan Calvin, are very different. I actually disliked the movie at first because of this. The movie is not bad by itself, but it's nowhere near being a faithful adaptation.

Glad you are seeing this. 3 movies of 2004 were excellent, This, Man on Fire and Collateral. Outstanding work. Have a great day.
Viki is basically ultron with no body 💀
In a sense, but Viki is cold logic, while Ultron is psychotic and flawed. He is resentful of organic sentient life and seeks to wipe it all out.
