Damm. All this time I was doing the gable grip wrong thumb out lol. I just tried the right way and it’s noticeable stronger. Thanks for the awesome video Eli!
Good to see other folks using that 3 finger grip for the baseball choke. I found out long ago just by experimentation that I could cinch my forearms tighter around the neck vs the preacher grip.
I use that thumb in 3/4 grip when I’m attacking turtle. You can lock up a pretty powerful darce turnover using the grip as you can pinch your elbows together without breaking your grip.
I used to use the 3 finger grip on my waist clinch. Mostly becsuse thats just how i learned it, but it might sometimes help steering someone when you make transitions from front waist clinch to rear.
3 finger for no gi for baseball bat choke. Also, use it ratchet down certain moves to keep connected. For example, Neil Melanson uses the Neil Knot quite a bit to break posture. This enables the mobility to really crank down on that shoulder.
I love your coverage of the guillotine grip. I've also heard people call it the gentlemen's grip. My favorite grip for standing guillotine or closed guard Marcellotine.
VERY underrated subject in grappling. Great video! When using the C grip I like to teach trying to connect the thumb with the middle finger and not the index finger for max power in the grip. You showed it but didn't say it so I thought it's worth mentioning 😕
I have been using that 3 finger grip for at least 25 years. I find it allows me to really get my fingers around as much of my hand as possible. Switching the pointer finger to the other side of my thumb allows me to get a super tight grip around the thumb pad. Also great that you mentioned when and why you would use the C grip vs the monkey grip. That's super important. We get alot of people that have only trained in the gi and only use the monkey grip. They all say the same thing. I dont want to get my thumb stuck in the gi. So now it's their habit to use it for everything gi or no gi. Great video. Thanks for posting.
I find the 3-2 / lebell grip works best for inverted arm bars I can usually slide it from my opponents shoulder to the elbow keeping pressure the whole way. Ive been using a slightly different version of Ben Eddy's ok grip for really powerful no GI baseball bat chokes. I reinforce my thumb with my pointer and middle finger and instead of gripping with my palm facing towards me I grip as if I'm looking at my watch.
I personally love the 3 finger grip. I have arthritis in my hands and my grip strength isn't what it used to be so as a student of the art, I had to adapt, even when I roll now I finish more chokes with a 3 finger grip than any other. I'm also 5'5" 150lbs and have smaller hands than most guys who are bigger than me. The only advantage god gave me was this 73" wingspan so my lanky arms are able to hit a deep choke on a bigger man thank goodness.
It seems that the grip gets stronger as your fingers bend in further towards your palm. The shallow bend angle of the thumb grip and preacher grip compromise their strength. All of the other grips shown, including the 3 finger, allow a larger bend angle.
Love your videos. Respectfully, an s grip is inherrently weaker than a gable grip. The more you pull an s grip, the more the tips of the fingers open the opposite grip by pressing against the inside of the knuckles. I would also suggest that the amount of "torsion" or rotational freedom is always limited by the opposite hand. In an S clamp, both hands have high back and forwards flexion, but limited side to side movement UNDER TENSION, whereas the gable retains reasonable flexion throughout the full range of bending and rotation.
a guy showed me some what i thought was wrestling grips. He showed me the three finger grip and I practiced it for years when ever I was in the shower. No that I'm doing it in BJJ people think I'm stronger than I really am.
Choosing the right grip saves energy. Also grips are alot stronger when your hands are closer to your lower torso. For ex. hold somebody's wrist while they try to break away. Try it 2 inches in front of your stomach vs a foot in front of your chest or anywhere else, u'll see... it's why we naturally curl up to open that bitch of a pickle jar
Honestly the 3 finger grip just feels more natural to me, no real reasons other than that as to why I prefer just feels better and harder for my partner/opponent to pry my hands apart.
Holy Crap!! This is an entire lexicon of gripping. I need a note pad 🙌
And an extra arm to take notes with!
This is what happens when students think they are being smartass in BJJ. JK.
Epic comment, epic reply.

Always happy to help any way I can.
But not so resistant to twisting.

Same here. It’s almost perfect for that choke.
@@KnightJiuJitsu It's crazy how much difference it makes by moving the thumb over by one finger.
This is the most important video I never knew I needed.

I've started mostly doing gi so this was very helpful thank you

Excellent detail to point out. Thanks bro 🙏

Thank you for that feedback and insight!
Nice I was just thinking about grips the other day!
Really helpful tutorial. Thank you.

Damn, totally left out Ben Eddy’s ok grip. That would have been a great mention in this video.
Great job guys! 🙏
RIP Gene! 6:15
Good info. 🙏
nicely done! please do one for Gi as well.
I plan to. Just wanted to start with this one because a gi version seemed much more in depth.
Knight Jiu-Jitsu makes total sense, professor. Thank you. Oss.
Video i needed. Thank you
Great video thank you
another video perfect for me! Thanks Eli.
Super glad to hear that!
please make a video about grip fighting in gi while standing
Solid tips!! greetings from brasil!
Obrigado!
The kind of hard hitting Jiu jitsu white belts like me need. Great video and thank you!
That’s that good stuff 🔥
❤️❤️❤️
Ive been training bjj for about a year now and this whole time I thought it was called a "cable grip" lol! thanks for the informative video
It’s a very common mistake. Glad this helped!

“3 Fingers choke”. Aka modified Gable grip for finishing Guillotine choke from half guard.
No love for the figure four grip?
Nice.
Hey, what do you think of towel pullups and one arm pullups/chinups for gripping and fighting performance?
I think they are excellent. Also, JitsGrips are great tools for that too. Check them out if you haven’t.
C-Clamp vs Monkey grip seems to be "do you grab with the hand or with the arm".
Nice 🖒👍🖒👌👌

Max was here
The whole time I've been doing preacher grip and my entire gym(instructors included) have been calling it gable grip🙄
It’s a common mistake, but you’ll notice the strength of them is very very different for sure.
Thank you. Now my step-daughter stands no chance.
Exemplar of the warrior spirit

I use the three finger grip to make fart noises and confuse my opponent
