Hello, I see this is an older video but just discovered your channel and I had a couple of questions. -is the Henry/Read handle bar bend similar to the stock one? -the levers, I’ve seen these on other vids to be a problem with clearing the switch pod or switches when pulled. Apparently more so on the clutch side.
Thanks Sean, another to the point good video. Would you recommend the MotoX system vs arrow/acro systems? I don’t want to spent the extra $ on them if the MotoX will last the distance. Keep up the good work.
Hi Mickey, I was thinking about buying an Also system and doing a comparison video, but at over $1000 I don't think I can justify that. I don't think the Akron would be 3 X better than the Moto-X. In very happy with mine.
Hi Shonky, I noticed in a later video of the Simpson that you had a rear tank. Would you recommend a rear tank? What brand rear tank did you use. any chance of doing a video on the install. I have checked out your later videos and cannot not see any mention of the rear tank except when you fuelled to test bike weight. Thx
Good spotting. I used a Camel ADV tank from a CRF250L on my bike. It was a custom install as the rear subframe is different. Camel ADV now do a 5L one for the CRF300L. Have a look at their website for info.
Wow, I just roughly calculated, without tyres. It is hefty 2.4k $ for mods, and with set of tyres (which you should nevertheless buy at some point after OEM) we come to 2.6 k $.
Hi Cyber Gasty, yes that is a big outlay. But, most of it are things that myself and others would add to any bike. At the end of it all, including the purchase price of the bike I have spent $12,000 (Australian dollars). What I have got is a bike that is setup perfectly for me and what I what I want... A lightweight adventure bike. That is still a lot cheaper than the purchase price of many other "adventure bikes"
It's a RAM QUICK GRIP www.mounts.net.au/collections/ram-phone-mounts/products/ram-hol-pd4u-ram-quick-grip-xl-large-phone-holder It's great. I haven't had any issues with the USB cables coming loose.
Great set up review Sean & on a reasonable budget! Couple of Q's - With the exhaust and ECU, how does the power & torque compare to an un-corked XR250? (I gather you're a similar build to me & you mentioned you've had an XR). Also, excuse my ignorance here but how does the gearing throw out the speedo? Not read off front wheel huh? Thanks, Tim.
Hi Tim, power and torque are up over a XR250. Similar small thumper feel, but smoother with more pull out of corners. The Speedo is driven off the gearbox on most bikes these days, so changing gearing affects Speedo accuracy. I'm my case making it exactly accurate.
Hey. Thanks for the video. great ideas. can i pick your brain please. do you have any issue with the storm barkbuster setup? Itchy boots ended up changing hers and apparently they affected how much turn there was on her handle bar! She ended up putting on an acerbis. i use the storm barkbusters on my 660 currently and love them and was going to get them for my new 300 in July. Also the bash plate. Are you happy with the yamoto or have you found any better alternative? I'm hoping to get all my accessories sorted before the new bike arrives. Looking forward to seeing your journey across the Simpson. Cheers. Charlie.
Itchy Boots had her Barkbusters installed incorectly! I did send her a message saying that the mounting arms were installed upside-down, but I guess with so many comments, she never noticed it. I have no problems with the Storm Barkbsters on my Rally. I am very happy with the Yamoto bashplate, I reccomend them highly. Thankd for your message, and I hope your bike arrives soon. Sean
LOVE Seat concept seats. had a heap of them. Biggest con is that you have to own a air staple gun or spend more money for an upolsterer. You forgot the levers link. How long did it take to get the 550 ecu from the US?
HI Greg, thanks for reminding me about the lever link. It took about 6 weeks to get the ECU sent to me here in Australia, but that was over the Christmas postal rush.
Just a clarification for USA viewers, the 550 tune is less than $150 if you ship your original ECU and my turnaround was less than 10 days both times. It certainly doesn't turn your bike into a 450 but the difference is fairly dramatic and a game changer when you are in the woods.
Perfect advise on the 300 Rally You have it summed up excellently Now if we could get some motor bikes into dealers … Keep posting info and purchase links When things free up I’ll use your channel to purchase in support of the work
Yes, I have removed the backfire screen from the standard filter and added an 1 inch extra snorkel to the top of the airbox, next to the standard snorkel. I'll make a short video on it soon.

@@bondibeast good work getting in contact with them. Hopefully when they see the interest, they will make a model for our bike. I'm pretty sure they just need to make different mounts as the 250 subframe is different to the 300.

Hi Bud are you still 100% happy with the bike compared to the African twin to you miss in any way thinking of swopping the tiger 900 rally pro for the 300 talk soon Marcio
Hi Marcio, YES, I am still very happy with the change from Africa Twin to CRF 300 Rally. It has opened up so much more riding opportunities for me. For example, yesterday I did a 230km "dual-sport" ride where I left my home, rode 20km up the freeway and then did 150km in the bush exploring lots of side tracks including very muddy, rough and steep trails. The ride ended with about 60km of nice country roads to get home. Not once did I wish I was on the Africa Twin, and in fact, I wouldn't of done any of the exploring on the Africa Twin because of it's weight. Once you accept the lower power, everything else is better or easier. If you are just touring or going on gravel roads the bigger bikes are great, but as soon as the road gets wet, slippery, rough or steep you will wish you were on a lighter bike like the CRF 300 Rally. It's a shame that there are no bikes at dealers for people to test ride. I've been letting people ride my bike to help them make up their minds. So far, everyone has been very impressed with the bike. I hope that helps. Sean
Hi Sean That's the way I'm starting to think I ride my 900 reasonable hard not sure if you have seen any of my videos ? ? but I say I would be able to go harder and maybe have more fun on the 300
@@ozbiker5311 Yes, I've watched a couple of your videos, and think that you will definitely be able to go harder and faster on the 300 Rally... AND have more fun. It is just so much easier to turn and stop that it encourages you to go harder and faster. As a result, you have more fun. Just as long as you are happy to give up the big bike acceleration and power. I have gone from 100hp to 20hp and am loving it. Sure I can't go as fast on the freeway (but I can still do 120kph) or do big power slides, but I can explore everywhere and have a ball chasing and overtaking the big bikes!
It seems that everyone else doing similar mods to similar bikes always do an airbox mod to improve the breathing. Doesn’t this model need it? Or would benefit at least a little from inhalation improvements?
Yes, there is more power to be had from opening the airbox. Just taking the lid off and testing it without the lid in place proved it to me. I have since done several intake mods that you can see in my Power Up Kit video.
Did you make a video on your throttle tube mod shortening the throttle throw, I can't find it? I have an injured wrist with very restricted movement so this mod would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.
I have a generic heat shield on the muffler and bolted the stock heat shield to that. If you take a look at my Camping Setup video you will see it better.
Hi Sean, THX for your Movie! I must tell 🥴....... you forgot the skidplate brand, under engine ( OEM plastic ) it's YAMOTO? (the plate holder is the original that you wisely cut ? 🤩? Hi Luke, yes I forgot to mention my Yamoto bash plate. You can see details of it in one of my previous videos. Thanks for the tips on the fork savers and handlebar bag, I'll take a look at them. Sean
Hi Slakk, good question. Because I'm using oversized bars I need an adaptor... that raises the bars a little itself. I also added the original top bar clamps, now used upside-down as another spacer. I needed to use longer bolts when bolting it all together. If you are tall, you may want to look into lowered pegs also.
@@ShonkyProductions ok cool thanks 👍 I am trying to work out a solution. I am 5'10" and was thinking a 30mm riser/fatbar adaptor with the same bar bend as you have.
Shonky, I'm looking for a new rack as my Honda rack recently broke. Do you know the steel thickness of that one, the weight, is any of it solid or all hollow. That particular one isn't available for my 250 so I'll get something made up to look like that one. Thanks
So does the CRF 300 only have a spring in one side ? , like one side is rebound and other damping? , apparently getting correct tyre size is an issue is this true ? , and buy putting larger tyres on increased height and actually weight? But thanks mate , I have one of those screen mounts on one of my bikes .
That's correct, the standard suspension only uses a spring in one fork. The standard rear tyre size is a slightly less common size but myself and most other people have used anything from a 100, 110 or 120 width tyres without any issues. The height/weight issues are very minor and vary from tyre to tyre.
I'm sure you could. It should just attach to the triple clamps. But not sure what you would achieve doing this over the 300L... bar a little more fuel. There is a 13L tank coming out for the 300L soon.
@@ShonkyProductions well, i want the body fairings of the rally along with the riding position and the larger tank, i just dont like the adventure style headlight assembly. which brings to my next question, can you fit the body fairing of the rally on the 300l? Cheers.

Hi Sean, How wide is the H2C rear rack? I'm trying to figure out which rack will work best with Mosko Moto R80... Cheers T PS. The link for the rack in your description is wrong - you end up viewing another rack than the one you have.
Hi Tonny, I'm away from the bike for a few days. I'll be back home Sunday and measure for you then. Thanks for picking up my boo-boo with the link. I'll fix that up.
Great question. The rear is 120 width (I think its a 120/80 but I'll check tonight when i'm home.) It's wider than standard but doing a great job with no negative effects. The standard size rear tyre is not that common and there are limited off road tyres in that size. I'll have to check the front tyre size for you as well. Thanks for watching.
@@ShonkyProductions Really appreciate your help! Was telling the Mrs. how much I enjoy your channel. Very entertaining. I also enjoy the tips and wisdom you always share. Lastly, the dialogue you have with Nugget can be downright hilarious. Thanks again mate!
HI Mickey, The Pro Taper EVO in Henry/Reed bend is an 'oversized' bar so it necessitates a 'bar adapter' which also raises the height 25mm. I added an extra 20mm to make it more comfortable for me standing up. (I'm 5'10). At 6ft, you will probably need some sort of bar riser whatever bars you choose.
@@ShonkyProductions Hi Sean, further to this, did you have any issues with cable length (brake and clutch) getting too tight when rising the bars 45mm? The bike looks great! Cheers, Ash

@@slakk5093 I feel your pain. I put a deposit down in December 2021 and that bike still hasn't turned up. The dealer said April, but with major manufacturing and shipping delays around the world... Thanks, that's correct. I don't need any fancy looking stuff just things that make the bike better.
Great to hear, thanks
Hi Shonky, I noticed in a later video of the Simpson that you had a rear tank. Would you recommend a rear tank? What brand rear tank did you use. any chance of doing a video on the install. I have checked out your later videos and cannot not see any mention of the rear tank except when you fuelled to test bike weight. Thx
Good spotting. I used a Camel ADV tank from a CRF250L on my bike. It was a custom install as the rear subframe is different. Camel ADV now do a 5L one for the CRF300L. Have a look at their website for info.
Hey mate, do you have bar risers on there also?
What is the phone mount you use? Looks rock solid - do you have issues with the charging cable popping out?
It's a RAM QUICK GRIP
www.mounts.net.au/collections/ram-phone-mounts/products/ram-hol-pd4u-ram-quick-grip-xl-large-phone-holder
It's great. I haven't had any issues with the USB cables coming loose.
Thanks! How does that mount to your bike though, hard to see from your clips or from the RAM website.. Sorry for the annoying questions!
Am I seeing a lot of rust on the exhaust piping?? @12:11
Did you do your suspension? I would love a video on the process. So you can just add another spring to the other fork?
My was done by a professional suspension shop.
@@ShonkyProductions Ok, good to know re the power, I was pretty happy with what the XR could do! Thanks Sean, Tim.
Con in the tail tidy, no number plat light.
True. I only have the tail light to illuminate it. But, yes a highway officer might not like it....
great video what's the name of ECU and were can I get one thanks
It's from 550 Performance.
I have a video review of it on my channel.
Hi Sean ,did yours come stock wit IRC tires in Australia?
Sean
@@ShonkyProductions thank you Sean. That's cleared that one up lovely for me. Bark busters storm it is then 🤘🤘.
Thanks for clarifying that. I should have stated the options for purchasing.
Perfect advise on the 300 Rally
You have it summed up excellently
Now if we could get some motor bikes into dealers …
Keep posting info and purchase links
When things free up I’ll use your channel to purchase in support of the work
Hey Shonky, what size rear tire did you put on? The stock tire is a 120, I'm thinking I could put a 140 on it. What do you think?
Have you any thoughts on a modification for the air filter? For example to make it more effective but not restrictive.
Yes, I have removed the backfire screen from the standard filter and added an 1 inch extra snorkel to the top of the airbox, next to the standard snorkel. I'll make a short video on it soon.
@@ShonkyProductions Thanks for the advice and the quick response. Very much appreciated! I look forward to your video!
How do you like your rear rack. Did you use that on the simpson crossing? How is the quality? Thank you!
I love the rear rack. It was perfect on the Simpson Desert trip. I recommend it.
Thank you! It has just arrived today, cant wait to put it on. :)
got the 300l and then ims came out with their 300l fuel tank and its only 2.5 gallons.... not to happy about that , its hardly an upgrade , was planning to use their tank thought it was going to be 3.5 gallons like the 250 l
Email Camel ADV and ask if they're going to make a tank for the rear of the 300.
@@ShonkyProductions They got back to me, they are looking into it but haven't made a decision yet
@@bondibeast good work getting in contact with them. Hopefully when they see the interest, they will make a model for our bike. I'm pretty sure they just need to make different mounts as the 250 subframe is different to the 300.
Whats the name of the phome-mount you used? Because I did exactly the same : bought me a cheap rugged phone and can confirm that this is with the right apps way better then a normal gps. Problem is the thickness of more then 16mm I cant find a phone mount which can take that....
Where did you get the mounting bracket to attach the stock exhaust shield?
It's just a cheap eBay exhaust heat shield that a drilled a hole in to mount the standard heat shield.
@@ShonkyProductions brilliant! that's what I will do then, not a fan of the way it looks without it. Thank you!
Are the bars that it comes with tapered? I have Tapered Bar Barkbusters and wondering if I can transfer
No, they're not. You will need adaptor mounts. But they helped me raise the bars slightly to suit my preferred height when standing.
Hi Bud
are you still 100% happy with the bike compared to the African twin to you miss in any way thinking of swopping the tiger 900 rally pro for the 300
talk soon Marcio
Sean
Hi Sean
That's the way I'm starting to think
I ride my 900 reasonable hard not sure if you have seen any of my videos ? ?
but I say I would be able to go harder and maybe have more fun on the 300
@@ozbiker5311 Yes, I've watched a couple of your videos, and think that you will definitely be able to go harder and faster on the 300 Rally...
No, I haven't. But Aaron has:
ua-cam.com/video/0iJN4ygxc4Y/v-deo.html
Also, you could always change the throttle for a quad bike thumb throttle.
@@ShonkyProductions I was also thinking about that. Thanks.
Hey shonky, what are you using the prop the plastic stock exhaust heat shield ?
I have a generic heat shield on the muffler and bolted the stock heat shield to that. If you take a look at my Camping Setup video you will see it better.
DID YOU DO AN AIRBOX MOD?
Yes, I have now. check out my "Power up kit" video.
ua-cam.com/video/zOtYvro-xVM/v-deo.html
Where did you get rear sprocket?
There's a link in the description.
Where to get the 38T sprocket, i Live i Norway, an not all will ship to europe
The rear sprockets are the same as XR250 and XR400. If you can find somewhere local selling those. Or maybe Rocky Mountain ATV might ship to Norway?
Hi Sean, THX for your Movie! I must tell 🥴....... you forgot the skidplate brand, under engine ( OEM plastic ) it's YAMOTO?
(the plate holder is the original that you wisely cut ? 🤩?
Sorry Sean .... can I advise you for the fork-dust-guards (dust cover & oil seals) : Forksaver brand or Kriega seal cover brand and the awesome little handlebar-bag Harness Pocket or XL type (Kriega)
VERY COOL tweaks!!!!!
Enjoy 🏁Ride Safe / Ciao e GRAZIE!!!!
Luca 📍(Milan-Italy)
Hi Luke, yes I forgot to mention my Yamoto bash plate. You can see details of it in one of my previous videos.
Thanks for the tips on the fork savers and handlebar bag, I'll take a look at them.
Sean
Hi Shonky, can I ask what bar rises you bought to go with the handlebars?
Hi Slakk, good question.
Because I'm using oversized bars I need an adaptor... that raises the bars a little itself. I also added the original top bar clamps, now used upside-down as another spacer. I needed to use longer bolts when bolting it all together.
If you are tall, you may want to look into lowered pegs also.
@@ShonkyProductions ok cool thanks 👍 I am trying to work out a solution. I am 5'10" and was thinking a 30mm riser/fatbar adaptor with the same bar bend as you have.
@@slakk5093 Yes, that should be very close. I'm 5'10"... well, maybe 5'9" now (shrinking) and this setup suits me.
@@ShonkyProductions 😁 awesome, thanks shonky. Appreciate the response
Shonky, I'm looking for a new rack as my Honda rack recently broke. Do you know the steel thickness of that one, the weight, is any of it solid or all hollow. That particular one isn't available for my 250 so I'll get something made up to look like that one. Thanks
I'll have a look at the thickness. I know it's all solid as I have moved the position of the handle on one side when I mounted the rear tank.
@@ShonkyProductions thanks 🙏 mate
Can you swap the crf300l headlight assembly in this bike?
I'm sure you could. It should just attach to the triple clamps. But not sure what you would achieve doing this over the 300L... bar a little more fuel.
There is a 13L tank coming out for the 300L soon.
@@ShonkyProductions well, i want the body fairings of the rally along with the riding position and the larger tank, i just dont like the adventure style headlight assembly. which brings to my next question, can you fit the body fairing of the rally on the 300l? Cheers.

@@ShonkyProductions actually i need the rally tank, engine fairings, and the position of the foot pegs. So i was thinking maybe ill just go with the rally and change the whole headlight assembly.

Hi Sean,
How wide is the H2C rear rack?
I'm trying to figure out which rack will work best with Mosko Moto R80...
Cheers T
PS. The link for the rack in your description is wrong - you end up viewing another rack than the one you have.
Hi Tonny, I'm away from the bike for a few days. I'll be back home Sunday and measure for you then.
Thanks for picking up my boo-boo with the link. I'll fix that up.
@@ShonkyProductions I'm still curious about the measurements 🙃
@@RoamingViking Dam, sorry Tony... Let me run out and measure.

Not sure if you mentioned it, how tall are you? Asking for the wind protection / screen. thx!
Good question., I should of mentioned that. I'm 5'10.
Did you make the steg peg or buy them?
I made them out of door stoppers that I bought from the hardware store.
Never mind... I watched the video again. Not sure how I missed that
@@ShonkyProductions That is a really good idea!
SP, what size Michelin Starcross tyres did you put on your Rally? I'm a newbie and didn't see an exact match to the stock size. Thanks in advance.

@@ShonkyProductions oh ok. That’s awesome.
Hi Sean, is the Henry Reed eco bar height ok for someone 6ft tall? And do yo use handlebar risers? Thanks again

Yes, the dealers could have kept a demo and taken a lot more orders.
You might be able to find a dealer with the 300L. I know my dealer has one sitting in his showroom.

Has anyone gotten just Stock Improved ECU without doing any other exhaust mods and think it still worth it or should I wait until I upgrade the exhaust?
I know people that have and they are happy. But, if you plan on upgrading the exhaust, I would wait and get the Stage 1 tune so you dan't need to get it down the track.
The license plate mod “con” is no license plate light.
That is true. It's now up close enough to the tail light that it gets som illumination.
only thing wrong is the exhaust.. its a 300cc.. it WONT sound good, you will just make more noise when you are out riding in the forest and pissing off other people... just... stop.......
I agree. That's why I made custom baffles for my muffler. I don't like loud bikes either. Also, loud exhaust is more fatiguing on long rides.
how's the heat on the right hand side.. i hear it gets very hot . any problems .?
Heat?
I have no issues with heat at all. Maybe with the original exhaust which has a catalytic converter in it.
