  • Ever wanted to learn how to scream? Ever wanted to learn 3 different styles at once? Then you're watching the right video. I go into breathing techniques and different types of screams. I also go into my preferred usage for them and actually scream over some of the songs off the new album due for release later this year in June.

    One thing I have heard on the subject of drinks that help the vocal chords: hot water. Basically plain hot water helps the vocal chords stay warmed up and in good shape if you've been using them a lot before a gig/if the gig's set is really long. Because it doesn't have anything else in it it does the same as water but just helps the voice feel less strained and more warmed up if you've been using it a lot. It is a lifesaver if you're beginning to lose your voice but don't rely on it too much, try to rest your voice if you can wherever possible.
    Anyways, great video Jake, really informative! :)

    HOPEFULLY A HELPFUL TIP!!!! The breathing technique he describes, a good way to know if you are doing it correctly is to put you hand on the sides of your lower rib cage, you will feel the lower part expand dramatically. I'm an opera singer, and that was how my teacher taught me, now when I inhale, the is a 5 inch difference in my rib cage between my resting breathing and that technique

      +nat wulf I had the same problem when I started, too. My voice is so clear and I always had issues with getting anything more than an angels soft breath to come from my voice. If you practice the techniques in the video and build on them gradually, you will soon learn how to control your voice. I still have an issue with having a voice that's too clean unless I go full growl mode.

    8:47 is to me a typical fry scream. It shouldn't hurt at all, if done right. Since fry is executed with closed vocal folds with very high vocal compression (uses very little air) you should be able to hold it really, really long. I personally can last for like 30-40 seconds no problem, and i've seen people who can hold it for like two minutes.

    I feel like my normal singing lessons (my teacher is a opera singer and that's mainly what I'm learning) could really help me here because I have to use my diaphragm there as well, so I know how to use it.... I know opera sounds really lame but it really helps to learn how to control and not damage your voice ^-^

      @abbyd9870 8 років тому +5

      in fact my teacher explains a lot of thing that you explained in this video almost the exact same way... it's just a different noise.... btw I don't learn this stuff to be a opera singer I just learn it to control my voice and my breath

    (super late seeing this video by about 5 years.) Literally watching this at night. Everyone is asleep. Going to watch it again another time in the morning. I've been wanting to figure out how to scream (mostly just scared of what others will think{I know I shouldn't think like that}). I'm sure if I practice this, it'll work out. I'm just wondering if this'll work with a female's voice as well (mostly worried about the last type of scream). I just don't want to lose my formal soprano voice though. XD

    Awesome tutorial Jake! Not something I'll ever use (I've tried singing before and it's not my forte) but it was interesting insight into how screaming works. So many people kill their throats by not doing it properly and even more just scream, forgetting to scream in tune.
    As for future videos I'd like to see videos about your gear, either your guitar and hardware or you recording setup and what software you use etc. As someone who does mixing and recording I'm always interested in hearing about recording setups.
