    Damn, trying out the reserves with no obligation to stay is valuable information. Never been told that, honestly think nobody in my shop even knows that. I'm 14 months out before separation and not sure what direction to choose. Thanks for the info.

    Can you deploy if you’re in school full time while in either one ?

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  2 роки тому +4

      Yes. You can be deployed despite other obligations. Only thing that can prevent a mandatory deployment are things like legal trouble or medical trouble

    Just a little note on your vid, in the reserves, they have no (or very very little) combat arms MOS. So you will more than likely have to change mos if your transitioning there as a combat arms active duty.

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  2 роки тому

      Very true. For some reason the army reserves gave most combat jobs to the guard. But if you're not in the army or looking for combat jobs, you'll be alright in reserves.

      Did exactly that, left active in August 2001. Then 9/11 went down so I enlisted in the Air Guard. Lots of good benefits especially depending on what State you're in. Maryland paid 100% tuition for any state public school. Saving my post 9/11 for graduate or law school.

    My friend is currently joining the army active duty he leaves for basic training in a few months. They’re waiting for him to finish school so I believe he’s in the DEP but don’t know for sure. he’s already gone to meps sworn in and signed the first half of his paperwork. his recruiter told him to take the first job they offer him which I think was arms combat. He doesn’t want the combat job or to be sent to see real combat and his recruiter told him the only way to amend/change his contract would be if he left school early basically now. since he hasn’t shipped to basic yet what are his options? Can he switch his contract from active duty to reserves or other options before he returns to meps and ships out?

  • @ZackkDixon

    I’m a month out from basic and I’m the typical “I’m in it for 20” guy. What does leaving AD at let’s say, 8 yr mark. Would joining reserve or ANG disqualify me from pension at 20?

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  11 місяців тому +1

      Not at all. Changing to guard or reserves at 4, 8, 12... whatever year is a great way to get a retirement. You just wont be eligible for an active duty retirement if you don't do 20 years of active duty though.

    WHAT IS THE PROBABILITY OF GETTING A MEDICAL JOB IN THE RESERVES ?

    • @daisyc7917
      @daisyc7917 Рік тому

      FOR ARMY

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  Рік тому

      It's not really a matter of probability. Do you qualify based on your tests scores? Are there any openings? Then go sign up. If you don't qualify - study harder and take the test again. If there aren't any openings - go with air force reserves or the air/army guard. Go wherever you can get the job you want. Probability for those that qualify, are patient and willing to put in the work to get the job they want - 100%.

    I've separated for 6 months after 10 years from active duty. I received an honorable discharge but was at high year tenure for the air force because of a demotion. Is guard or reserve a viable option for me? Could i even possibly go back active if i made the rank back?

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  10 днів тому

      If your reenlistment code is good, you should definitely be able to join the guard of reserves. Give a recruiter a call! You could potentially get yourself an AGR slot. It's always easier to maneuver through the system once you're already in.

    I’m infantry in the army but I want to do the reserves because of the no obligation. How do I go about doing that? I don’t want to join the national guard and be under contract for 6 years. I don’t mind changing my mos to be in the reserves

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  Рік тому

      You can start having a conversation with a career planner (though, they might push you active) or better yet a prior service recruiter. Tell them exactly what you want - to continue drilling while in the IRR and not sign an additional contract with commitment beyond your existing commitment to IRR service. This is something you can/should do 6 months out from eas. If you're earlier than that, you can still chat, but I don't think they can do anything for you that early.

    Some states (territory in my case) will provide the state benefits for education if you are a veteran just like a person who’s only been in the guard and is not a veteran. Whereas someone who’s only been in the reserve and isn’t a veteran, will not get the same benefits

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  Рік тому

      Interesting. That kinda makes sense. The state has a relationship with their guard, they want to incentivize people to join their guard and not go reserves maybe?

    I’ve e been out of active duty for about a year now…in a sick way I kinda miss it. Was thinking about joining the gaurd or reserves. I think politics is keeping me away though. I see some guys not going back in for that reason. Idk though. What’s your take on that? Also Would I loose my benefits like post 9/11 if I did re up part time? Why did you completely get out of the military? (If you don’t mind sharing)

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  2 роки тому +4

      I think we'll always miss parts of it. If you left after your first contract, you can give it a try while you're in the IRR with no additional obligation. I wouldn't jump to the guard until you try that first.
      It won't impact your benefits at all. However, if you got a rating you will have a debt for the days you drill (you can't get double paid). Not a big deal, that's the only thing I know it'll impact though.
      I'm going to make a video on my story at some point, but it came down to family. I have a wife and kid now and the juice was no longer worth the squeeze.

  • @liberoAquila

    I'm conflicted between NG and Reserves (Reserves are giving me a higher rank but rank is just vanity if you are part time). If you served 4 years AD that means you need 16 years of Reserve to retire? And you can start collecting at 56 instead of 60?

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  Рік тому +1

      Ya, rank doesn't mean a ton. I'd go by job and convenience. Not exactly. The way I understand it is it's still 60 years old unless you bring that down with deployments. Traditional AD doesn't count against that clock.

  • @0HORNMASTER0

    I'm trying to go from active duty to the reserve. Reserve unit is willing to accept me but wants me to let my chain of command know. I cant find any conditional release info for Active Duty to Reserve anybody else that was successful going AD to Reserve? My ETS is 15 months away but I'm trying to get released in October.

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  Рік тому

      Best bet is to look into palace chasing. That's the only set path I know of. But that's guard, not reserve as I understand it.

    So, I’m almost out of basic training, and currently there’s some strain on family. Do I have to wait until the end of my active duty contract in order to transfer or are you able to transfer things over now? Or after basic?

    • @jasonburds
      @jasonburds  2 роки тому +2

      If you're in the Army or Air Force, you can take steps to prepare for what's called 'palace chasing'. Look it up - basically can apply to drop active duty for a guard/reserve unit.
      You won't be eligible until you've completed two thirds of your contract though. So start preparing now by being a complete stud. Out perform everyone and build your reputation. The better your reputation, the more likely you are to get what you ask for.

      Towards retirement it's all based on points. Some reserve days count twice as much as active days. Retirement eligibility is based on years in service, size of pension is based on points.
