I rebuilt a 300tdi 90 three years ago and it cost £8500, I did 98% of the work myself, it’s passed it’s mot/ inspection every year since it’s done around 10000miles or 16000kms! My opinion it’s been worth doing,
Looks great. I am going through the same process with my 1997 d110 300tdi. Many items needing repairs or work relate to your video content. Thanks for sharing it helps to keep the spirits up and encourage me to continue with my work. Excellent work!
Being a Defender Enthusiast Ive had the 110 '95 300 tdi hard top 2011Puma 90 station wagon now back to 2012 "rare in Aus". hard top 110 puma All great vehicles.Love them.I drive Toyota 79s for work daily but Soulless Work vehicles only! Defender all the way❤❤❤!
It looks great and with necessary and preventive maintenance on critical items completed upfront rather than waiting for stuff to fail it should be as trouble-free as a vehicle this age really can be. Excellent job!
Well spotted , I’ll leave it for now The vehicle is stored in doors so it shouldn’t get much worse. I’ll tackle that in a few years when this vehicle gets a new paint job.
Very nice to see another original looking South African Tdi 90 without all the glitzy accessories and camper conversions. Such a nice looking vehicle, great job keeping it clean and original. I'm also pleased to see I'm not alone in keeping my defenders free of a bullbar. Mine is in much the same state, with a focus on the mechanical side and original trim, although I've kept the exterior 'patina' for the moment and I haven't been brave enough to rip the decals off! :) Interested to note that your diesel cap is on the left side and flush, is this an extra tank? My previous owner took parts of the aircon out of mine - If you have a moment sometime it would be great to see what a standard (I assume SA) installation looks like. I want to get it working again and I was interested to see that your compressor is like mine and mounted with horizontal bolts. The UK ones are vertical with a cover over it.
The vertically mounted AC compressors are found on 300tdi Discoveries. It is a much better method of mounting than the SA Defender method. Pipes are different so it's not s simple swop.
Hi thanks for the comments, very interesting. The reason I bought this vehicle was due to its originality and unmodified as you observed . That’s a sore fuel tank fitted by the owner. I’ll happily share some pics of the aircon, ther was some footage of it in the last video of the makeover
Looks fantastic. Which ever previous owner went with the choice of running a strip of checker plate from the sill up to the gas cap… what the hell haha. Never seen that before. 🤷♂️
That chequer plate on the sills and around the fuel filler is not uncommon here in SA, always looks terrible. Usually used to hide some problem but luckily not in my case.
Great insightful video Alan, thank you. As always enjoyed watching it and agree with your view. Fixing up never seems to end, or maybe finally ends when we lose interest. Luckily for us we don’t have the same rust problems as in some areas but sometimes wonder if mechanical issues on a 25 year old car can ever be ticked off?😉
The before and after is like night and day ! Its a neat looking landy and yes, the plain no frills look is fresh.
🙏

Great to to hear, they really have longevity these vehicles when you look after them, so definitely worth fixing up in my opinion
Nicely done!. All the parts replaced at once will give you peace of mind for years.
It should hopefully, thanks for watching!
Wonderful. 300tdi are the best all round. Love the wolf wheels and bigger tyres.
Couldn't agree more!

Great to hear, it can be a long and winding road but totally worth it. Good luck keep going.

That’s a fantastic result. I love the white roof and white HD wheels! Such a great combination.
Thanks for the feedback, the white roof was a bit of extra work but worth it.

Thanks, fully agree that’s the way I like to do it with preventative maintenance
Cheers Allan!
That Defender turned out beautifully!
Here in the U.S., your Defender would sell for 3 times what you have in it.
Yes I know, it’s crazy how they are selling in the US, luckily not as bad here but many are being exported
1:09 galvanic corrosion on the door hinges next.

Great job! Xxx
Thank you very much
You'll love it long time.
I hope so

Ah yes ! The perils of previous owner’s “better ideas”.🤦🏼♂️😱😖

Looks good. You just need the spare mounted on the back and it will be complete.
I know, I’m waiting to find the painted spare wheel carrier.

Yes we are very lucky with lack of rust especially up in Gauteng and inland areas
Nice nice nice. You just need to paint the headlight facades a mtching white colour now (or light grey). Black spolis it I think.
Thanks for watching and the feedback
Great looking 90!
Can I ask where you got an Aircon cassette, my 300tdi is missing it.
Lucky my brother had a used one, but you can find them from vehicles that are being stripped
One need longer studs with the wolf rims.
Thanks for pointing that out, I’ll need to look at that.
Defenders are a hype and totally overpriced for such a shitbox on wheels.
I like them, and I can’t disagree haha.
Strangely I’d have to agree with you
Yet here you are!
Correct but I do like them
A defender isnt a car - its a way of life ! 😉
