All the streets ending in "gate" have nothing to do with gates in a city wall, but stem from the Viking word "Gata" which means "street". This shows the strong Scandinavian influence in this part of England.
Great video didn't realize Newark had so many old buildings and the walk around the gardens and castle and river where great will have to make time to visit sometime in the near future
I live in Newark! It's very odd to see someone appreciating everything I walk past everyday haha. And I never realised how clean Newark looks! It is a shame the Castle Curtain Wall is under going repairs on your visit. Typically non of the barriers are there and you can sit and eat a sandwich or something in the castle windows looking over the river... We got married in the castle gardens. Definitely a great place, and free to visit too! Thanks for the video
Same I live In Newark and its like a 5 min walk into town! I've ever seen someone doing a tour of it either. It makes me happy to be able to share my home town with others
Love the video. We watch quite a few of the town and city walks and you are by far the best. Just wondering if you can remember where you had the great curry (in Newark)? We are planning a trip...
I can yeah! I have GPS on my Iphone and always take photos of where I am so I can go into my photos, click 'places' and then zoom into Newark and the photos appeared where the indian restaurant is! I love that feature! So the indian is Koinonia South Indian Restaurant 19 St Marks Ln, Newark NG24 1XS It was delicious - in fact I'm going to go back there again soon now you reminded me! Here's the link to it - maps.app.goo.gl/QjrVobYszCy6wdcn7
Thank you for this, lovely tour. You flew past my stall on the market (Newark Eco Refill - the one with the bright green banner on the front, I’m the one in the white hat!), and I can confirm that Newark is a very good place to live snd work. It’s an extremely beautiful and historic small town.
My brother in law and me used to go fishing on the Trent back in the late 1960's and early 70's. where he worked had a fishing club and every week on a Sunday they hired a minibus to take the club to various places to fish. The Trent was one of the favourites, when you walked past the Italian restaurant, Zizzi, the road by the side, The Wharf where the Pizza Express building is used to be a transport cafe and whenever we were going to Newark we always stopped there for breakfast. Not been back there in years. Nice walk, lots of history will have to go back and have a proper look around.
I was so glad to have found this - my Gt Gt grandfather John Menzies owned a Drapers shop in Barnbygate for many years in the mid 1800's before he retired and moved to Balderton then Derby.
Unfortunately I never had the privilege visiting Newark. I love the castle so close to town. I 'm a huge fan of all castles. This one is a beauty. The walk towards the park with the crunchy leaves under your trackers was discernible on the video! I love autumn too. The reflection of their fall colours on the water is so beautiful. I've never seen so many weeping willows together in England before. I always gasped when I would see one of my favourite trees! Thanks for this lovely walk, and now i can feel that I can tick Newark Castle off my list of castles to see! :)
It was great for my wife to see Newark again she used to go every Saturday with her friends from Mansfield ,she has not been back for 35yrs with her coming to Hereford to live then us moving to the TRNC North Cyprus.
My home for 8 years ❤ Now im back in my country in Czech Republic, but i will be back, love Newark bit boring, but clean and quite place to live with kids ❤❤
I live here yet still thoroughly enjoyed your presentation. Hopefully it will tempt more visitors as it's a lovely town with a decent amount of shops and a good market several times a week, and a wealth of great coffee shops and food. For those with campervans or caravans there are some great campsites too. Well worth a visit. Shame the castle wall was fenced off on your visit, this is not usually the case. So no great camera shots from the "windows" across the park and river. Great place to sit with a sandwich etc and enjoy the peacefulness.
Hi. Shopping in Newark is great, & plenty of cafes. We miss Marks & Spencer in town centre near the market .We are back in Newark again this week. You filmed it beautifully & well presented..Thank you. ☆
Another great & fantastic video of NEWARK ENGLAND | Tour of NEWARK ON TRENT from Newark Market to Newark Castle and Riverside Walk | 4K .When i had a Lambretta scooter i went around Newark for a ride!,💖💖
Fab video highlighting some of the towns appeal. The beautiful autumn colours really make this a must see video. I run a self catering property on the outskirts of Newark so would love to use this in our blog?
Great video, I pass Newark quite a bit and sometimes even go to the station. I think I now need to pay a sit and stay a couple of days. Looks a lovely place.
i used to pass the castle when coming by car from manchester to cambridge and looked forward to see folk fishing...now its been stopped..i wonder why....enjoyed your tour short and sweet....
It's nice to see appreciation for our beautiful town 😊 Zizzis is known locally as the Ossington. Said to be haunted by Lady Ossington, who was apparently teetotal and doesn't like it when people drink alcohol. The street it sits on is Beastmarket Hill (Northgate runs after Castlegate and Bargate 😉) the flowerbed on the left is said to be an original water trough
Newark very pretty historical town and just on the outskirts is Newark's largest employer - the currys distribution centre, home to tech for all currys tech retail stores.
I live quite close to Newark. It is a beautiful town, but dying because of the horrendous traffic which puts people off coming to the town. Don't be fooled by what is shown on the film. It can take half an hour to get through what is a small town sometimes. Businesses are suffering, and more and more are closing every week, or so it seems. Closing the M&S branch was a big blow. Agree Koinonia is a great place for an Indian. The Zizzi restaurant you showed has in fact closed down, and the building has been empty for quite a while.
Unfortunately, to date nothing as been found to prove this, its claimed there are tunnels under the market square, but again radar surveys found nothing, I've lived in Newark all my life (71 yrs) and my dad even believed in the tunnels so I think that another radar survey should be done but set at a deeper range setting, not just a couple of feet
Can see a lot of people from Newark commenting. Can any of you say something about best and worst streets/areas to live in Newark for a family with young kids?
Don't bother. Lived here all my life pretty much and it's not that great! It's dying out not even got a shoe zone shop for school shoes anything related to kids clothes and footwear is supplied by Asda or you can get ripped of in Clarks So many shops have become empty and so is the market compared to what it used to be like, every stall would be selling something but now you get about 6 at the most we've been left with way too many over priced coffee places, hairdressers and pubs all the street opposite the castle is literally pubs and antiques shops so in the summer I've seen families looking awkward as they were just trying to have a walk to the castle but they're having to take the kids through the street full of half cut people smoking outside all the pubs on the main street! And secondary schools are limited to two within main Newark and one further out which would be a car or bus journey every day but the two we have are both pretty crap to be fair! My 19 year old left the area as soon as she got a uni place cos you can easily end up stuck in a rut here for the rest of your days and she didn't want that lol. Newark's dwindling so for a long term home it might seem pretty but it's not a very "practical" place for every day living. Also teenage traveller can be found spread about the town waiting to annoy people cos they don't go to school lol. I'd advise just keeping this as a nice place to visit for a few hours, I'm still here mostly cos I can't move elsewhere and I've been here that long bow I can't imagine where else I'd live lol.
The only good thing about Newark are the people that come from the Cattle Market side of the bridge,A famous quote from The infamous Mr Jason Gulliford.
That quote is a load of crap as the only people that live on the cattle market side are the so called travellers who's teenage kids are the worst for hanging around the town centre annoying people with kids when they should be in school 🙄🤦♀️
Yes, if you carried on at the end of the film, his yard was down the track near the Swan and Salmon, just beyond the Corn Exchange on the same side. Though I’m not sure that he deserves a credit in any film…
There are two train stations. Newark Castle station you can actually almost see at 21.39 in the video, the station is just in the right hand side here. You can see the barriers sticking up just beyond the darker car in the background. Newark Northgate station is a bigger station but is a 15 minute walk from the Market Place.
Great tour. My building is in the castle ground model as its "grade 2 listed" I proudly show my guests the historic castle and what I remember from researching in my (good mark) history project as a child. I was in denial until child got ran over coming off behind school bus on Lincoln Rd, dry day 11/9/15 in peak traffic main road directly in front of working cctv. Not informed by police despite child is a MINOR, heard in the radio in a taxi. Injustice to date. Fake news brainwashed ppl by Nwk Advertiser published despite proof. I lived in Newark for like 30 years, and its always cool to go and have a walk round every now and again. Cool video
Newark is lovely to visit one day. I so love. Watching your walks. Thank you sharing walks with us all.
A lovely walk alongside the river, we do it most Saturdays on our way to the market, great video thanks for putting it up
Stopped off at Newark few years ago as a pit stop, it was a lovely place x

Yes pity it was fenced off, but it was for safety because of the fear of falling masonry, still all gone now

I live in Newark on Trent!! I've never seen this before 🤣 Newark is my favourite place Edit: My mum works at Barclays with the head in the wall ❤️
Love going to Newark, the fruit n veg stalls on a Saturday n wednesday( if they still do it) sell off it all at around one ish!
They do!

Need tips for the best place to stay next time though - my hotel wasn't the best this time
If the South Parade is still going on London Road try them 🙂
@@awalters5924 Great hotel, but sadly now gone, we do have a new Travelodge

I'd love to see when it snows.
Newark very pretty historical town and just on the outskirts is Newark's largest employer - the currys distribution centre, home to tech for all currys tech retail stores.
See Britain’s narrowest house to the left of the Town hall. Around 6 minutes in.
the narrowest house is at conway quey north wales
@@posnerist May be it was the narrowest then before that one was built,

Great vid can u fish on the trent at Newark castle just wondering
Nearby, with a permit
I've always loved Newark but last time we went,a lot of shops were closed down and it had gone downhill a bit....shame
Ah yeah there is a bit of that
2 mins from my house chillin
Nice!
There are ancient tunnels that run from the castle into the market place dating back to the civil war. One day they may be reopened.
The Women's Institute building used to be a toll-house when the Great North Road was a turnpike.
Thank you David - didn't know that but makes total sense now you've mentioned it!
Beautiful, just a shame the town is so quiet and the market virtually empty. Lovely lovely place tho
Yes, true
The boat trip is amazing though x

Interesting that the street signs and pillars and posts are all painted royalist red, the red of King Charles(civil war)
