    Ryan Doyle returns to the crazy park to shoot a roll tutorial video for beginners of freerunning parkour martial arts and street acrobatics, he talk about the importance of basics and the efficiency of the pk or shoulder roll. this is the traditional korean martial arts way to roll, it is a break fall. remember this is only 1 of many wany ways to learn, but you cant really argue with 5,000 years worth of proof

    One time I was riding down a large hill on wave board and couldn't control the speed which ended up being around 30 mph. I turned to hit the curb and did a long, barely tucked pk roll onto somebodys yard because of the high horizontal speed, and then just stood there. Nothing hurt, not a scratch. This was when I was new to parkour and only knew how to roll but then after that I just wanted to learn more, so I have been. My pic is me doing a double speed vault over a six foot gap.

    I've learned this roll with my parkour friends several times. I've been seeing a lot of comments saying "I keep hurting myself" or "It's not working". Honestly, when you first try it, it's GOING TO HURT! Maybe not if you do it right of course. I've been dong parkour for about a year and a half and still have been having trouble with my roll. It's one thing I've got to work on still. For those who are struggling.. Just don't give up! Keep rolling and getting better! This was a great tutorial because that is all there is to it! It's also a matter of feeling and the way you move into the roll.

    This is the most helpful video on forward rolls I've found. Some others go over that basic 'rolling diagonally over the shoulder' aspect but I was never able to roll properly until I used the first progression you showed here............keeping your hand tucked under your foot is great because it makes me feel less afraid of committing to the movement. Looking forward to mastering this soon!

      first you have to perfect a regular shoulder roll on the grass. This will take a lot of time. When you think you've got it down...keep practicing lol chances are you don't have it perfect yet. After you're totally and 100 percent comfortable with a regular roll, try doing it from higher surfaces slowly and on soft surfaces...GOOD LUCK

    Make sure you absorb some of the impact with your arms and try to throw yourself over your shoulder so that only the back of the shoulder hits the ground. It's a bit tricky. But when I mastered not hitting my shoulder, I started hitting my hip bone, so be aware that you might get the same problem. Hope that helped, good luck!

  • @LukeJamesL

    Alright so I have been practicing my pk roll and I'm still very very new to parkour and I don't know what a roll should feel like. Like where I should feel pressure and how much of it. Because I don't really know what to expect and how to know when I am doing the roll properly. If someone could help me out and give me some pointers as to what a roll should feel like it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    • @palo1475
      @palo1475 8 років тому +4

      +LukeJamesL You shouldnt feel pressure anywhere, but this is kinda tricky cuz i was doing that i just rolled over my back, that is bad. I learned it by putting my hands to side and then going over shoulder to side too. Otherwise it looks like a little kid roll-over.

    • @radicalrob2103
      @radicalrob2103 8 років тому +22

      +LukeJamesL lay a 18in long piece of tape on the ground in a straight line and do your best PK roll across it so the tape sticks to your back and it should start from your shoulder u rolled on to your hip in a diagonal line across your back,,,This shows you how your rolling and if your doing it correctly will be a perfect diagonal line from shoulder to hip if not, adjust your roll as needed :-) That's how I learned to roll straight. And the point of a roll is to evenly distribute the pressure from landing hard so It shouldn't hurt if done correctly. Hope that helped a little :-)

      +kalapufye ngenomesho Incorrect. Pain is a sign that you do something wrong. Just roll a lot on softer surfaces, the go to harder ones and start rolling. slower amd lamd further down your back. Or maybe roll faster try to wary it, you'll develop your own painfree technique over time.

    • @phoenixgrimm5217
      @phoenixgrimm5217 8 років тому +6

      +Anthony McGeorge The first times I did, I also hurt my shoulder doing it. Don't necessarily give up, it took me 3 rolls to finally get one that didn't hit the back of my head or impact my shoulder. I would suggest making sure you are really sitting back on your 'take off' leg when you start. You know how when you sit and try to balance on a bike, it doesn't work? But when you get it moving forward, you can balance? A child might try to balance on a two wheel bike the first time, afraid of putting force to the wheels, and they will never learn to ride without a push. The same concept applies. You NEED to put force into your take off, in a smooth motion, or you just sort of fall 'straight down' onto the shoulder, rather than rolling. If you're NOT reaching your starting position after the roll, you simply don't have enough force.
      The next step is you can control if your back or shoulder reaches first. Try going a little higher and tucking tighter, so you begin to feel and have control over what part of you contacts the ground first. Hitting your back mid roll isn't ideal, but it doesn't hurt. Then you can adjust to your physical form, how you specifically need to roll! Once you find it, keep practicing it until it becomes natural to you to just know, without hesitation, before moving on.

      @mer3dtheeagle241 7 років тому

      "fear learner" that's sounds of lack of confidence .. I have this struggle too .. well you need to take down the fear by building trust .. find the trust point in the move after you learn it on safe place then you will kick the fear (sometimes you need to trick yourself) .. am fast learner but I take sometime to kick out the fear for example I learned backflip in 4 days but it took 6 days to be done on the ground..
      well , remember this
      "defeat your fear or it will become your limit"

    I did martial arts for 4 years, I have a 1st degree black belt in TKD. In order to graduate we were required to go to a gymnastics training facility (actually the same facility that Shawn Johnson trained at) but they taught us the high fall dive roll completely incorrectly. It's clear this method is 100% better than the "flat back" technique we were taught and if I ever end up falling face first I'm going to remember this. Thanks.

    • @Kazuhira95

      The semi-circular canals in the inner ears are filled with endolymph fluid and they contain hair-like sensory nerve cells. When you roll, the fluid stimulates the nerve cells. If you roll non-stop, your brain will have trouble processing the information and that is why you feel dizzy. When you stop rolling, the fluid will still continue to move but it will gradually come to a stop and that means the dizziness will slowly go away.
      Hope this helps.

      AmateurUA-camr Get use to spinning. It might make the fluids thicker or something so that it adjusts to movements quickly.

      Well don't start from something too high. You can even start from crouching, or standing. Also do it on the grass and on a matress. If you do all of that it's impossible to even hurt yourself. And once you get better you can start from a bit higher, or try on concrete.

    I had this issue too, it felt like all pain was on my right side (I practiced on wood flooring), and recently I finally managed to do it- what I was doing wrong, was I was rolling with the outer side of my arm/shoulder, when instead I should've been aiming for the inside of the shoulder, collarbone area when your in position. Aim yourself at a slight left direction to start off, aim for that inside, inside shoulder and everything should be all well :)

    Nice to see some roll tricks for beginner, now I'm a fairly experienced parkour practitioner myself, but I didn't learn my roll from a parkour teacher, I learned it at my ninjutsu lessons, they really told me a lot about how to make contact with the ground without hurting my shoulder and spine and that's really something I've NEVER heard from my parkour teachers, but I think you do a great job. One thing I've noticed at ninjutsu and when I'm out doing parkour is that it is much easier to avoid bad rolls when do do more than just roll, taking a gap and roll for example or jump kick to a roll.

    • @StevDoesBigJumps
      @StevDoesBigJumps 9 років тому

      ***** I usually do this on softer surfaces like soft roofing felt or my lawn. Also do it on wooden floors at ninjutsu

    • @masa5300
      @masa5300 9 років тому

      From looking at your messages, you seem to know what you're talking about. I'm curious but if this is for beginners then is there a much advanced version of this roll and would it be worth learning after mastering this one and why?

    • @StevDoesBigJumps
      @StevDoesBigJumps 9 років тому

      For you the only true roll, would be the one you prefer to do. So experiment with them and come to a conclusion on which roll suits you best. And don't think too much about different rolls, after all the differences are quite small anyways, so doesn't matter too much.
