Ah, ah, my earliest singing memory. That one is very closely connected to an event which I've organised called Stroll Down Memory Lane. So I thought what about all the old songs that our grandparents sang.
Got in touch with all my replies and said what did, what did our mothers sing? My first memory is Two Little Girls in Blue and I remember when I was five years old, dressed in a little blue dress, I sang Two Little Girls in Blue. So I popped that in there as part of my Stroll Down Memory Lane because it's a Stroll Down Memory Lane for me, that's for sure. My mum sang a lot when I was a kid and she still does when she looks after my kids.
My actual earliest singing memory, probably primary school, was a bit daggy but I remember singing the national anthem at the start of assemblies. The sound of like a couple of hundred kids and teachers just going for it and being surrounded by that sound and I suspect that's probably played a bit of a part in, you know, why I love ensemble singing and group singing so much. Be with family around the piano, it makes me sound like a hundred years old.
Probably choir at school, in primary school, which I loved and I sang in choirs all the way through to high school as well and school musicals, the whole thing. If there was music I was there. Yes, with things like that I think, at kind of events and occasions that there's live groups around fires and Christmas etc.
My dad is an avid singer and I actually knew about the Festival of Voices because of his love of music and his passion for the festival. He's one of those people that attends the Singers' Lounge every single night it's open. So one of my first experiences with music is actually beyond my memory because it's songs that dad would sing to me as a baby when he was putting me to sleep.
So I don't remember that but the music when I hear it now still resonates with me and has this kind of beautiful calming impact. All through my schooling years as I was growing up I was part of singing groups and choirs and drama performances. These days it's a lot less formal, it's more singing along with my little nephew to his favourite songs and that's a lot of Beyonce.
