I remember playing this game as a kid. It absolutely blew my mind. The fact that you could walk around in a 3D world in any direction and "do whatever you want" was absolutely crazy at the time!
Going back a bit further, I always felt there was a progression of Hunter -> Body Harvest -> GTA III (with respect to "driving around an open world"). I only just noticed today that those last two games were both by DMA.
You guys need to hear about Jurassic Park: Trespasser, it was extremely ambitious, so much so it's the parable of Icarus in video game form. Nevertheless I have lots of respect for forward thinking developers, it tried to do Half Life 2 style physics, Far Cry open worlds and an arm and hand that were too hard to control but could interact with the world. The technology was really not there to reach one of these design goals, let alone all 3, to rub salt in the wound the game was rushed. They tried to have two arms but it was way too hard so the "final" only got one, the level of interactivity they wanted with the arm and hand is too much, it's akin to trying to do a VR game without VR gear.
Interestingly, this game was basically developed by one guy only (Paul Holmes)while Martin Walker did the music. He planned to include free camera movement but had to release the game as-is.
Brilliant game. I loved playing it although back then I didn't really understand what the purpose was. I didn't care though, I was just blown away by what was possible.
Worked fine on the amiga 500...when I got a 600, the left direction control didn’t work and I had to travel left in diagonals instead. Still didn’t stop me, I loved it, even though I was a kid who had no idea what I was doing except running round and driving things. Plus you could explore on foot for ages until an enemy ran you over with a hovercraft.
We were blown away beyond belief when this came out. There was nothing like it before, or for years after. There was a cheat where you couldn't drown and if you used it to swim far enough out, a surfboarding Medusa would come after you. It's been so long I can't remember exactly.
Wahnsinn
"Hunter mode was initially what I wanted to do, but the missions mode was a fairly natural addition, and made it easier to sell. Also the game world seemed well suited to a locate and destroy mission format so I did not want to pass that up. I had some concerns too that the Hunter mode alone, in the time I had to do it, would not be substantial enough. The Action game was just a big mission strung on the end. I think it sold reasonably well but that said, I don't think I have ever met anybody who owned Hunter and actually paid for their copy!" -- Paul Holmes, designer, programmer and graphic artist (Hunter - Amiga)
It would be awesome to make a game that's based in a polygonal world but sprite characters and it would be a stealth game. I can easily imagine a Metal Gear Solid 3 demake in this style.
It was funy how a bicycle (or all vehicles, for that matter) would keep driving on it's own if you jumped out at full speed, and how he inexplicably changes into speedos instantly when you used a surf board :D I started creating a remake of this game keeping the same graphic style but with better controls and faster movement. Check out my development thread on the English Amiga Board forum (same nickname).
Spent many hours on this as a kid on the Atari ST. Think it was a bootleg though with no instructions so had absolutely no idea what I was supposed to be doing but didn't stop me spending hours at a time. I remember something really odd though. I once jumped out of a helicopter and landed inside a tree and there was a little man inside the tree trunk. Unless I dreamed it.
I had the bootleg on my ST it gave unlimited fuel and lives although I cant remember the man inside the tree it's possible especially since the code was played with! Great game thats been forgotten although perhaps we could compare it to GTA with a military context
First open world game I really come across on the amiga. Also a hobbit game was available. 6 disks ha ha. I still have my amiga in my mams. My son is here on the Ps playing GTA5. I was trying to explain to him, how you cherished even loafing a game on the Amiga. It took skill just to load disks up without getting an error. I even went further back and showed him what we had to sit through waiting for a spectrum game to load up. I suppose the Dizzy collection was also open world. memories memories.

The "Far Cry" of the past. Awesome game and truly ahead of his time.
Was just playing Far Cry 6 and thinking it's the closest thing to a modern day version!
This was way ahead of its time.

@@protocetid I remember playing the demo of Trespasser back in the days on PC, yes it was very interesting!
Way advanced for a 1991 game
+Adam Demeter (Agginon) never knew that , thanks for this cool info
Amazing game, one of the best experiences with the Amiga.
Incredibly impressive for 1991!
It used to just blow my mind back in day this game..Loved it such a great game
Favourite game I had on the Amiga. Very lonely in terms of an un-populated world and audio. Never bothered me at the time.
so way ahead of it's time that it's truely awesome.
There were some truly smart people that developed this.
Interestingly, this game was basically developed by one guy only (Paul Holmes)while Martin Walker did the music. He planned to include free camera movement but had to release the game as-is.
The scenes when the character is inside a building reminds me of the first Alone in the Dark. Is this running on a base Amiga 500!? This is amazing!
I used to play it on my Atari ST
No stock A500 can handle framerates like this. It uses heavy acceleration.
I used to play it on my Amiga 500 but it didnt not run this smooth that is for sure.
The sound of the water! Oh this SFX collection sakes me back.
Brilliant game. I loved playing it although back then I didn't really understand what the purpose was. I didn't care though, I was just blown away by what was possible.
GTA Series: "this is my grandfather".
Loved every polygonned second of it!
Better physics than Cyberpunk 2077, 30 years before it.
Facts
13:36 Nice landing. Luckily there's another helicopter nearby.
The GTA of '91. Brilliant game.
Gta wasnt even a thing in 91.
That intro track sets the tone.
Spent many many hours on this one, cracking game.

Looking for this comment! Thought it was only me
The Amiga 600 was a disappointement.
Jumping in a helicopter and trying to fly it in this game would have the same result in real life for me.
A true simulator. 😂
Wow This brings back memories as a kid spent hours driving about in that boat, definitely far cry 😂
GTA and SOT many years ago :)
This game was so much fun!
Crashing a helicopter into another and doing stunts, time bombs, tanks, sharks, windvsurfers, pushbikes!

Where Operation Flashpoint series all began 😍
Serious memories in this one 👍

this looks so weird, but very ambitious for the time it was made
This game fascinated the ever loving excrement out of me back in the day 😯

Too bad I didn't know about the secret wheel vehicle thingy, or I would have shown it.
I spent so many hours in this game. First open world game ?
Not the first but a very good game.
I was terrified of this game as a very small kid. Something about the liminal nature of it.

6:22 This was a creepy sound when you were playing this at 2am in winter as a kid!
R.I.P. Paul Holmes.
Remember typing the x and y coordinates to find the hovercraft

Let's put these high-tech nuclear devices in a low-tech room with bearskins, no one will ever think to look for them there.
This game used to freak me out as a kid, no clue why
Ok THIS time im staying on mission.
5 mins in: Whats that?! Going to drive it kill it blow it up.
IT'S OVER 9000!!!!!
Over 9000? There's no way that can be right!
The original GTA game.
let me guess.... you run it on A4000
or you just upgrade your amiga 600 using the vampire accelerator
first ever 3d open world game

This game needs a mod based off Hunter Biden, where he walks around the world naked and smoking crackpipes.
better then cod lol jk
holy shit! That looks terrible!
It's from 1991 and no, it doesn't look terrible.
Just like your mum
