As someone who was also appointed to West Point, this was very refreshing just to hear another perspective. I’ve been documenting my journey after West Point on my channel too, albeit a very different post-West Point experience. I also received 3 nominations as a Californian, and it definitely is the exception, not the rule. I did have to go through the nomination interview boards from Senators and my local congresswoman though. Overall, I believe West Point really does look for well-rounded individuals with leadership potential.
@SEMPER PROGRATIS I think you are a very rude man. What country do you live in? My husband and I live in Australia. You sound angry and may be jealous of Justin Taylor who is a very cool handsome young man whose hair style is delightful. I think you should go back to school and learn some manners and also how to treat people nicely.
@SEMPER PROGRATIS I still think you are a rude man. I am a 68 year old lady and my husband is a retired tax accountant. Are you typical of a rude yank and you do sound similar to your President donald trump. How old are you young man? Obviously not a married man otherwise you wouldn't be so angry. Please don't knock the US military. You sound like you are an unemployed loser. It would have done you good to go into the military, but I'm sure they knocked you back because of your hideous looks and arrogant nature. You wouldn't have lasted one day. Justin Taylor seems a delightful young man, and I'm pleased we don't have people like you living in our country. America suits your brassness, arrogantness and couldn't give a stuff attitude. How old are you by the way? God help if you have a family. I feel sorry for your children if you have any.
Talked to an officer on the actual west point campus. Refreshing experience the campus is beautiful and I really wanna make it happen for myself and get into West Point.
Go for the right reason, that YOU want to go there. I made the mistake of giving in to a very domineering father when I applied. As time went by, his approval became less and less the driving force it once was. So, disenchanted, I left WP at the end of my Yearling year and went back to a civilian university. I was not anti-military though. I had just decided that WP was not the path I wanted to take for my commission. At college I signed up for ROTC and ended up getting my commission through them. I completed a full career as a Major and retired. I totally enjoyed my life on active duty and can recommend the life for anyone interested.
Well, I did attend, just didn't graduate from there. But, No, I didn't feel any disadvantage while serving. Once I was on active duty, it was very rare that anyone even asked our commission source. Not to insult any grads, but I thought I received a more well rounded education at a civilian university. It wasn't as insular as life at West Point. On the lighter side, there was the coed factor. My days at West Point predated them going coed. My university was definitely coed. :-)
I never actually signed, my parents wouldn't hear of me going any where else after the Academy offered. No Ga Tech, no Clemson, must go to West Point. Go where you want to go, it is your life. I played football, i made good grades......just make sure you understand the commitment. Reported to the Cadet in the red sash on July 1, 1983.
I also love the comment about the west point gymnasium. Old buildings are disgusting aren't they? You are a legend that you passed all your exams and finished your cadetship, even though going to gym each day must have sucked. You did it and you must be so proud of yourself, and your family must thing you are sensational!!!
My son tried his senior year and got triple qualified (which means West Point certified him as worthy to get in) but he was never offered a spot. His freshman year of college, he tried again and the ONLY thing he did other than good grades in college was he doubled his push-ups and pull-ups in the CFA. He was offered admission in February (immediately after they were allowed to send offers). The CFA, for him made the world of difference. And they do value seeing you succeed in college.
My son wasn't even invited to the USMA information session held in December of his junior year, but he reached out to the group that put it on and asked if he could attend. They said yes and after that he really hustled and wound up getting in to West Point a year and a half later. The amount of work he put into the entire application process was amazing. I always figured you had to be class valedictorian, all-state athlete, lead four non-profit charities, cure cancer, etc to even be considered for one of the academies. Not so. I have no idea if it's the case or not, but I think the application process is set up so they can see just how bad you want it. If you put in the work, that will show through and you can get in without necessarily being the super hot shot student / athlete. My son was pretty good at all aspects in the application but the only two things where he really excelled were the CFA (pretty much maxed it out) and the math portion of the SAT.
I applied for Green to Gold. I was told the only thing that held me back was lack of recommendations. Apparently, my recommendation from Col. Abrams (Retired General whos father has a certain tank named after him.) I didnt make it in time because he was on leave. Needless to say, I didn't get in. Got out after one more Iraq deployment. Still have the recommendation.
Bro focus on graduating and just do ROTC in college, I know how you feel but you gotta be on top of your shit at freshman year. Just keep looking forward.
Goldendino14 good luck! I’ve gone through the nomination and application process for West Point, and it definitely is quite the journey. Do your best and you’ll make it happen. I’ve talked about my journey through West Point on my channel too, and am willing to answer more questions if needed!
Found you recently, I just want to say that your videos are great. I'm 14 with a dream of West Point. To put it basically, I should focus on GPA, SAT and ACT scores, leadership roles to stand out, and physical condition. That's what I personally have thought, advice on that?
Good overall standing as a young adult. Physically fit and active in the community. As many clubs as your schedule can fit and as many academically challenging classes as possible. A plethora of extracurricular activities, groups, and clubs, even summer camps such as USNA STEM, SLE, SLCDA, USNA Summer Seminar, blah blah blah, boy scouts, jrotc, Civil Air Patrol, young marines. Someone shouldve already briefed you on these things, right? Networking, this may seem hard but TALK TO PEOPLE, talk to your recruiters, your local blue and gold officer, your senators and state reps, coaches, superintendents, everyone, even your parents or relatives and see if they can help, and especially your school guidance counsellor.
Also focus on volunteering and leadership roles. Plus look for stuff within the VFW or other veteran organizations. My neighbor credits his acceptance because he volunteered a ton for the wounded warrior project.
Hey Eman! I’m not Justin, but I was appointed to West Point as well so I’ll give you my two cents. They definitely look at everything you mentioned - it’s about being a well-rounded individual with leadership potential. Don’t stress too much though, my biggest advice is just making sure you do your best in everything under your control. At the end of the day, that’s all you can do. Good luck!
It is VERY likely you would someday get a combat assignment if you are a WP grad in the right job. Depending upon your branch, your probabilities will vary. The combat branches definitely increase your chances.
You outta be in sales Justin ...............ability to make the complex simple and your delivery is very calm matter of fact and this is the way it is in a sincere way..............well done videos.
2014 Grad on NCAA Recruits: The coach can blue chip a candidate. If at the end of your nomination process you did not get a congressional nomination, and are otherwise qualified, you can get a nomination from the Superintendent. That's how it was 8 years ago. May have changed since I went through the process.
Now They just find them a nomination from a different congressman who has some to give out. One of my buddies is from Maryland and was accepted on a nomination from a congressman from North Dakota lmao
Bro, Hi! I am from Cambodia, an International candidate, who will be applying for the class of 2025. Specifically, regarding filling the application form, besides having had a sports team, does the application also demand the experience of community services (volunteer) that the candidates had been through?

Bro, im from Arkansas too! Im from Hot Springs though. Not going to West Point, (Duke University ‘23). I’m just doing some research because I was curious.
Hi Justin you are one heck of a nice guy. So modest and you were so fortunate to get into the military. How did you find the catholic school you went to? Did you enjoy it?
be in athletics and be good, be in shape, have best SAT scores you can --ie. study for it, I didn't, be the most outstanding person you can be in your hs class, I'd visit WP if at all possible and talk to cadets, it's a very hard life, I got an appt. in 74, but I was rejected for low phys. aptitude score and wore glasses, couldn't get a waiver -- looking back it was best I didn't go, I would not have liked it or succeeded -- if you're right for it , it will be a great opportunity, but lots of folks leave
What can I do as a freshman in high school to help my application? My school doesn’t have JROTC. Also we might no have sports this year so I’m not sure what to do.
so i’m a sophomore in hs (yeah i know im early) but west point has always been my dream. I have a 3.6 unweighted, 3.8 weighted. I tore my acl and am in rehab but before that I was captain of my high school freshmen soccer team(as a freshman) and play club soccer year round. I just got accepted into a 6 week internship for YMHA which is fairly prestigious as well as having done numerous hours of volunteering for my church such as service projects or community service. I am in my schools Honors Chmabr Orchestra and we were 1/4 highschool orchestras in the world chosen to do an international performance. I havnt taken SAT or ACT yet and I am in good shape. How am I looking and what else should I do to heighten my chances?
Hey Justin, I’m a sophomore in HS, looking to apply for the USMA. My mom is always on my ass saying how I need to do volunteer hours in order to get into it, if I have the minimum to graduate is this okay? Or does West Point genuinely care about the community service hours?
I heard that in the academies you are given more than you can handle in terms of workload. Is this true and does that mean sometimes you don't get things completed?
yea the average course-load is 18 or 19 credit hours. for reference my buddies at normal college take 12-14 and that's considered a heavy load for them.
Not sure if you know this, but what is the overnight trip like? I was offered one and just would like to know what to expect. Will it be a similar style to SLE?
It differs a ton dependent on the country you're applying from. Normally they go through two years at the military academy in their own country and then the few very highest performing in the class will take the ACT/SAT and all the same tests and requirements American applicants fulfill. Its a huge deal to be selected as an international cadet.
You’re actually active duty the second you arrive, but I’ve been a lieutenant for almost four years now and will pin captain in may. The requirement is five years active duty three years Inactive reserve
@@Justin_Taylor West Point time will count towards 20 years? that could be a great deal. do you still get paid as your rank ( now I would assume yes), in other words you are paying back the " time " but you still get paid as well
I am searching around because I’m curious on what it is like to go to West Point and I’ve always wanted to go to West Point and I am currently 10 I want to go to become a lawyer or become a brain surgeon and I want to do my two years of community college Darien high school so I can get in sooner. I am an auxiliary member of the American Legion and I’d be the first woman in my family to serve I am currently practicing my military time and alphabet
A bit of advice. If you get into westpoint, go to every army combat school you can. Each school you complete will add more money to your paycheck each month.
Hello, I’m using my mother’s YT profile and been dreaming of attending West Point since I was 9 I do have a question about the nomination part, In particular the if your parent did over 20years in active duty, I haven’t heard of that may I know what that is? so I can look into more since both of my parents did 20 active duty and my dad is still currently in at 24yrs and still going but I haven’t had much help from them since I’m still young and want me to focus on purely education, I do still have a few years but I would like to set myself up the best I can to accomplish my dream
@@rogfromthegarage8158 This is his mother, I do appreciate your insight and you are not wrong. I was unaware of this comment made by my 12 year old. He is a very headstrong and determined young boy. We do believe even though it’s commendable for him to want to go to West Point we also want him for now to just focus on his studies more then just relying on our connections to get him in. His curiosity just got the best of him. Since he knows of his father’s connections he is a bit overzealous on accomplishing this dream and is upset at us for what he thinks is a lack of support. He’s a good kid but only time will tell and he has to let his hard work show. My husband and I both serve and even though it’s admirable of my son to dream so big my husband and I will be the first ones telling him that he isn’t leadership material if he really isn’t. If he proves himself we will do our best on our part to help him succeed in it when he is older, if he doesn’t deserve it no matter if he is my son I won’t send someone who I feel won’t be a good fit to be a future commanding officer of our Army because it will be a disservice on my part. I have seen and worked with others of privilege and I’m sorry to say they knew nothing but Ego and I will not have my son be one of them.
@@ayssaallen2261 I thought about what I said and feel terrible. I am going to delete my comment. I didn't realize your son was 12 and the last thing I would ever want to do is crush someone's dreams. Believe me, I'm not from privilege. Please accept my apology and I think it's wonderful that your son thinks big. That will take him a long way, West Point or not.
Devin Chen I guess if you can somehow fit BCT between your Highschool graduation and R day, then sure. That time frame usually isn’t long enough to fit all 10 weeks of basic.
So i have a 3.0 like top middle of class, junior havent taken the act yet, im on the jrotc physical team (competeing team) one of the company 1st sergeants (2 companys) on drill colorgaurd, and commander of honorgaurd, planning on doing wrestleing, dad did 24 years in the marines, how do i go to boys state, how do i tell how competitive a district is, and do i go to a recruiters office to get the summer camp packet, and is there anyway i can go to west point and be a pilot in the army like is that an MOS i can commision/go into training, into straight out of graduation? Becuase i wanna be a pilot lol, If you see this please respond, thanks lol
Any sports that you actively participate in? For SLE, look it up on the westpoint admissions page, that should be obvious. Do not talk to an army recruiter, they will try their best to have you sign a contract, and you might just if you're gullible enough. Take your sat and act, see which one suits you and then ace it. The army have their own pilots, mostly helicopters and some others but if you want to be a jet pilot, navy and airforce is where it's at. You can research this on your own, like seriously, look up Pilot MOS' in the army on google, its not that fucking hard. Also, pull that gpa up. If you have ap classes, then its understandable, other than that, do not be overweight, have your bmi below 20, and your body fat % under 10 to be a great candidate. Participate in more clubs*, not just jrotc, homeboy.
Also, if you have the chance, talk to your local Blue and Gold officer, they can either be army or navy, you might have both in your area. Search it up, local blue and gold officer blah blah blah on google or ask around jrotc. You have more resources than a youtube cpmment section.

@@memeboi8880 1. Find out what you want to do and stick to it, STOP bouncing around, it only distracts you. Focus on getting into westpoint for now. 2. Cut down that bf%, build your body so it surpasses your peers. 3. Do way more sports, if I can do 3 ap classes and 5 sports, so can you, its only hard if you dont want to do it, get comfortable with it and then build from there. Track, XC, swim, and football, do all of it.
If you look at a the class profiles 1% of admissions were only in the top 80% of their class, 11% only in the top 60%. If you're not great academically or you live in a state that has a lot of applicants then you can enlist and apply as a soldier. There are spaces set aside for people that are already on active duty.
I know this is somewhat of a dumb question considering the type of school this is, but does excelling in an instrument and making All-State for that instrument, especially in a competitive state like Texas, help your admission chances to a school like West Point? My logic is that being proficient in an instrument demonstrates not only intellectual capacity, but also discipline and responsibility from the hours of practice that come from excelling in an instrument.
Bob Cohesive They also use the percentage of students that go on to college from your high school. They can estimate your class rank though that if I remember correctly.
My school did the same. Class ranking isn't huge in the application section but they'll probably just rely more on your GPA and transcript to get an estimation. Or, they may rank you among applicants in your general area.
Hi Bob! I was recently appointed to West Point and my high school doesn’t do class ranks usually. However, they made an exception for service academies so you can talk to your counselor about that possibility. If not, just focus on being the best you can in all aspects of high school. I also have some content on my channel in regards to West Point, and I think you might find some of it beneficial. Good luck!
I am in honor roll, have As and Bs, in National Honor Society, and do ignite mentoring (which is a club that helps 9th graders adapt to high school). I am physically fit and play soccer for a regional team. This is the only problem I have as it’s not a highschool varsity team. I was wondering if that becomes a problem. My overall question is: can I get into Westpoint under these circumstances?
TheSikorskyFlyer I currently do not know my class rank. I’ve taken Geometry Honors, Algebra 2 Honors, AP World History, and advanced Chemistry. I am planning on taking AP history classes until I graduate and possibly AP physics. I also am in Pre-AP Spanish which will take me onto AP Spanish next year, my junior year. I’m taking 2 extra years of Spanish which is not needed to graduate. As of class ranking, I do not know but I believe I’m pretty high up there. My school has 3,200 students, 900 which are in my grade. It’s located in the suburbs of New York. I just want to say I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. Thanks!

17 now?
Good luck!
@@rayecheng22 Thanks for the response, Raye! Do you know if West Point grads can see combat?
It is VERY likely you would someday get a combat assignment if you are a WP grad in the right job. Depending upon your branch, your probabilities will vary. The combat branches definitely increase your chances.

Bro, im from Arkansas too! Im from Hot Springs though. Not going to West Point, (Duke University ‘23). I’m just doing some research because I was curious.
Was Sallies the private all boys catholic high school that you went to?
Most important thing he said "I'm from Arkansas"
Hi Justin you are one heck of a nice guy. So modest and you were so fortunate to get into the military. How did you find the catholic school you went to? Did you enjoy it?
One thing I’m confused is can you get one nomination to multiple academies? Especially ROTC
Yes, you can. Congress person nominated ten to each academy and you can be one of the ten for each one if you apply
be in athletics and be good, be in shape, have best SAT scores you can --ie. study for it, I didn't, be the most outstanding person you can be in your hs class, I'd visit WP if at all possible and talk to cadets, it's a very hard life, I got an appt. in 74, but I was rejected for low phys. aptitude score and wore glasses, couldn't get a waiver -- looking back it was best I didn't go, I would not have liked it or succeeded -- if you're right for it , it will be a great opportunity, but lots of folks leave
Can you talk about the boxing classes at West point
Basically half a semester of learning how to more efficiently hit your friends in the face. Not too much to talk about really.
What can I do as a freshman in high school to help my application? My school doesn’t have JROTC. Also we might no have sports this year so I’m not sure what to do.
Thanks, you make me feel more comfortable with the application
You're from Arkansas! What area are you from? District 1 was not too competitive for a nomination either.
I can totally relate to your story, but I am still in finishing the process.
so i’m a sophomore in hs (yeah i know im early) but west point has always been my dream.
So how does one become a surgeon
Hey Justin, I’m a sophomore in HS, looking to apply for the USMA. My mom is always on my ass saying how I need to do volunteer hours in order to get into it, if I have the minimum to graduate is this okay? Or does West Point genuinely care about the community service hours?
did you ever get in?
Do you have to have a cool haircut and a "WOW" tattoo to get in? Asking for a friend.
They changed it recently so any tattoo is fine.
I heard that in the academies you are given more than you can handle in terms of workload. Is this true and does that mean sometimes you don't get things completed?
check out my video "Why I don't Sleep" it'll give a good explanation
yea the average course-load is 18 or 19 credit hours. for reference my buddies at normal college take 12-14 and that's considered a heavy load for them.
I got into the SLE this year and I was wondering about the pull ups do they truly look at because I can Excel at push ups and sit ups
Why am I watching this. I already got appointed and accepted it.
Where in Arkansas are you from? I’m from Jonesboro Arkansas.
is the army a good career??
Would doing mma or wrestling help improve your application more than regular sports?
Wrestling MAYBE because if I’m not mistaken you have to in a sport or band to go to either of the service academies no college does MMA
Where are you? Its almost been 2 months
My DD used some of these tips when she applied...... she is at Beast now.
quick question- can you wear army pt uniform to West Point hockey game?
What
@@Justin_Taylor i am guessing that is a big no go ?
Not sure if you know this, but what is the overnight trip like? I was offered one and just would like to know what to expect. Will it be a similar style to SLE?
Overnight trip is you shadowing a plebe as they go about their day normally, SLE is its own thing separately held during the summer.
If they offer you an overnight or you get into SLE its a really good sign
How about the international cadets? Is it the same procedures to get into the academy or it differs?
It differs a ton dependent on the country you're applying from. Normally they go through two years at the military academy in their own country and then the few very highest performing in the class will take the ACT/SAT and all the same tests and requirements American applicants fulfill. Its a huge deal to be selected as an international cadet.
Si eres de otro pais puedes ser oficial en USA?
Where are you from. Edit as soon as I wrote this he said where it was from
Were you in the National Honor Society in high school?
I don’t think so.
I would recommend doing it. It helps
What about martial arts ? Would that help for west point ?
It's a portion of your sport grade, but it would help if you're the captain of the team so you get credit for sports and leadership.
"Charge me for the air that I wasted for asking that question" Haha. refreshing to see that type of humor than what typically passes for lols nowadays
are you active duty now, does it require 6 years?
You’re actually active duty the second you arrive, but I’ve been a lieutenant for almost four years now and will pin captain in may.
The requirement is five years active duty three years Inactive reserve
@@Justin_Taylor West Point time will count towards 20 years? that could be a great deal. do you still get paid as your rank ( now I would assume yes), in other words you are paying back the " time " but you still get paid as well
Congrats on getting through IBOLC bro
He failed, hes going to be recycled back to the start in a few weeks/mounths

Meme Boi Boys State will happen next summer for you. You can apply through the American Legion. Just google your state’s boys state application.

Matthew Conrad Very good 3.7+ GPA
Never ever getting in with my 3.2 GPA XD
Doesn't matter I'm at the top of my class lol.
If you look at a the class profiles 1% of admissions were only in the top 80% of their class, 11% only in the top 60%. If you're not great academically or you live in a state that has a lot of applicants then you can enlist and apply as a soldier. There are spaces set aside for people that are already on active duty.

Did you go to catholic high school for boys?
I think
How to join West Point if you are a foreign?
I know this is somewhat of a dumb question considering the type of school this is, but does excelling in an instrument and making All-State for that instrument, especially in a competitive state like Texas, help your admission chances to a school like West Point? My logic is that being proficient in an instrument demonstrates not only intellectual capacity, but also discipline and responsibility from the hours of practice that come from excelling in an instrument.

Our school doesn’t have class ranking, so GPA...???¿ Must matter a lot then.

Do you know your class rank, and have you taken honors and AP/IB classes?
Thanks!
