I hate every person that disliked this video. This guy is spending his time to help other people who are trying to start a business, and for whatever reason people hits the unlike button. Majority of the people who are already very successfully won't even make a video like this because either they're too busy or just don't want to have any more competition and keep there knowledge from everyone else and just wants to tell people to believe in yourself, you can do it. Hard work pays. But people clearly can't appreciate it when someone actually spend there time to help others. The people in this world is dumb. I swear. And props to the people who didn't dislike this guys video.

It is so helpfup! ❤ I am actually just looking around and trying to get information because my 10 year old daughter wants to start her own line. However, I still lack information on how to even get a label on a shirt. What equipment she will need. Estimate on price. Etc. Do you have a video showing something like that? Thank you for your time. God bless you. ❤

Get an LLC and structure it as an S-Corp. Do NOT get a DBA. As soon as your business starts to take off, converting to a professional level entity from a DBA is a headache - easily avoided if done right from the get go. Work a week, get a paycheck and get an LLC.
He also failed to mention setting up a professional business phone line (NOT a cell phone). The phone MUST be dedicated to the business only. List it with directories. Get listed with D&B... Get your Business credit up - Business credit can go from zero to over a hundred thousand available in a year or less - HUGE starting and growth capital advantage...
Nice tips for a quick way to barely get by - if you're okay with that. If you want to grow and become something big. There's a bit more to it than this video teaches. Business credit is your lifeblood - not personal credit. Learn to build it, use it, and please do your research.
    LLC structured as an S-Corp
    Dedicated Business Phone Number
List Business Phone With Directories (Wait a couple months for it to assimilate)
Meantime, Get Listed with Dun & Bradstreet
Apply for Net-30's and pay in full IMMEDIATELY for about 3 months (do your research, way too much for me to go in to here.)
3 months later, apply for low level credit cards such as business fleet /gas cards... etc.
3 Months later, apply for AMEX business cards, etc...
Within a year, your LLC will have 50K to 100K+ available credit if you did it right...
Now you are getting in to real working capital... Eventually, you could easily hit 300K, 500K 1M+ in available business credit. That is the kind of money that launches major brands and takes you from a local neighborhood clothing line to a full blown cross country /world wide brand.
Your choice. Do what you want.

+Joseph Baker great info on building the credit side to the business. Unfortunately too many people run into roadblocks and reasons not to move forward with their idea. This video was to help propel them and get them started.

+Joseph Baker Good stuff man. I really need to sit down, and focus on the whole tax/legal side of things. I have a pretty good grasp on the whole structure/marketing of things aside from the legal shit. I have endless ideas, just no direction (it seems im good at figuring out the big picture/complex shit, but overlook the most simple/common sense shit).

Yeah, I feel you... I've launched roughly 19 businesses in my lifetime. Each go at a new business venture taught me what to do next time. Things you can only learn from screwing up or, by learning from others. All that I've learned over the years, I can still say - "I don't know shit!"
There is SO much to business. Hell, there is so much more to life - period. No one can ever learn it all but, the fact that you are "aware" that you "overlook the most simple/common sense shit" is a testament that you have the capacity to learn from your mistakes.
Most people are afraid to start a business. Many that start a business don't succeed because they fail at some point and are scared to fail again. Problem with that is, failure is the only way to succeed. You must be willing to accept failure as a learning tool. Accept oversight as an eye-opener.
Anyways, I could rant for hours, and end up going in hundreds of directions so... I'll leave it at that. No matter what you do, accept that nothing you do will ever be perfect and, you will most definitely fail - a lot! Then and only then, will you begin to see success through failure.

    • @josephbaker6571

One more thing. As far as tax/legal side of things. The reason I say go LLC and structure as an S-Corp... With an LLC, you will be able to avoid a lot of the headaches of operating at Corporate level. By "headaches," I mean corporate meetings, logging and keeping corporate minutes, etc...
Now, with DBA's - you are taxed HEAVILY! You will get absolutely zero deductions that would be available to you with other entities (LLCs, Corps).
Out of all the entities, S-corp is the only one that has the best of all worlds. You are only taxed once. Money that remains in the "Business" account is not taxed - with a few exceptions that have to do with overall business income, growth, etc - which can be properly managed by your accountant. Any extra money that exceeds your businesses allowed limit can be withdrawn as a "Profit Bonus," paid directly to you at a HUGE tax break. This is extra "Bonus" money at a heavily reduced tax break - above and beyond what you pay yourself as an employee of your business.
The remaining money will remain in your business bank account - tax free. You only pay taxes when you pay out to/for something/someone.
At one point, you had to first form a Corporation. Then, submit a form requesting to be taxed as an S-Corp. Effectively converting your C-Corp to an S-Corp. However, for some time now, we are able to form a LLC and do the exact same thing. Submit the request form for your LLC to be taxed as an S-Corp. Absolutely BRILLIANT!
      *** IMPORTANT ***
NEVER - EVER - EVER - EVER - EVER - EVER: Use your business account to pay for ANYTHING personal - EVER!
That will break the legal veil that protects your personal assets from the legal liabilities of your business entity. If someone sues you, you will be screwed. Keep personal and business finances completely separated - always!
Which is another - of many - reasons to avoid DBA's.
The only time a DBA is viable, in my opinion, is if the DBA is drawn up under your current LLC or Corp. For example, "Your LLC doing business as (DBA name)."

    • @GritsNGravy
      @GritsNGravy 8 років тому

+Joseph Baker Can you use your existing EIN number that you received for your DBA, to file taxes for your LLC? The business names are the same but i'm not sure if filing form 2553 is all that is required or also a new EIN number?

Save your self the time, learn the different business structures. Good things don' t come over night. LLC is the best choice for starting out with no liabilities.

Many people come with tips and while they may be good, this one is important to follow: Keep going. People try to start a bussines and give up after a month, because its "too hard". You just need to be patient, and give it all you've got, eventually it will become something.

This is the easy part. The hard part is knowing where to getting clothes manufactured and I don't mean just iron and press your designs/patterns on a T with a hanes or gildan label/tag. I'm talking YOUR designs/patterns with YOUR label/tag. I don't feel it's official until you do because then it's just for people who just wanna rock it and not profit.

excellent video! A big tip when brainstorming names for your business is make a checklist. Include all social media sites, web domains, search the dba/ secretary of state website. Make sure your name is available everywhere your going to have a presence before spending money. The more creative the name the less chance its already registered with your state or taken on a social media site

For the purpose of the video "start a line with less than 50" it was a great video. But yes, it is advisable to get an LLC or other legal entity since changing later can be more work. Also, starting a business as a legal entity can be save you from SOMEONE taking your personal property , such as home, car, assets, if you are ever in a legal dispute, since it would be considered a "SEPARATE ENTITY" or a BUSINESS ENTITY in this case. Yes, save a paycheck and start with a LEGAL ENTITY and not SOLE PROPRIETORSHIP (I AM NOT A LAWYER) THanks Jonathan wonderful video.

just so everyone knows it is impossible to start any kind of business for less than $50. I have a bachlors in business management and 2 current business's. for legal work alone its about $250 for the corporation, llc, etc, than you have to pay for the business license in your state which is around $250-$325 depending on the state of course, than you will need vendor licenses, etc. Not to mention you need product....

Aside from consuming as much content as you can that I have on my channel, my biggest piece of advice for you is to start sooner than later! You’re at a prime age right now, and unless you have kids to feed and a household to maintain, there’s little risk for you. The older you get, the more obligations and debt you pile up. Nonetheless take it at your pace 🙌🏽

The main thing I have to say is consult an attorney about your legal structure. Setting up a sole proprietorship is easy, but it leaves you personally liable if someone ever sues you. You need an LLC or a S-corp in order to protect your personal assets for any litigation.

Actually I would recommend choosing the LLC over a partnership if you have more than one person involved in your business. An LLC costs more but it offers you more legal protections if your business goes under. In a partnership you are 100 percent responsible if your business goes under. Also in an LLC your partners have more say in how this business is run vs. a partnership, where they pretty much have no say. If you don't have the money you can always form the LLC later and run as a shole proprietorship for now.

go to your local secretary of state website and register 2 things: your trademark and your doing business as name. those will run you anywhere between 15 and 25$ each. thats what i did and my logo and name are protected in my state. if you want to go national then you go through the United states patent and trademark office and register for 450$. so start small and work your way up.

It takes more than $50 the business name alone is $120. Trade marking is hundreds of dallors. Then you gotta buy business domain online. Not to mention advertising inventory. Oh and not to mention every town or city requires a business license In a town its $20 in a city or out of town between 100-400 $ all in Canadian dallors

Just to correct one thing here, an S-Corp is not an entity. It’s only a form of taxation. However, I agree that creating an LLC, taxed as an S-Corp is the best way to start because you can then pay yourself a 60/40 split from your profits. 60% in wages and 40% in Quartly dividends. File IRS form 2553 for election to be taxed as an S-Corp. you must do this shortly after forming your LLC entity, otherwise you have to wait a year before you can file again. Also agree with getting a business account. You must never co-mingle your personal and business funds. You will get into big trouble with the IRS.

Great video! Only thing I’d like to add is that EVERY STATE IS DIFFERENT IN TERMS OF GETTING AN LLC. I only paid $125 for mines in the state of PA. Check your government website to see how much it costs in your state.
