Your point about Tems saying Afrobeats is from Nigeria is exactly what Tyla was trying to educate the "establishment" about.. You completely missed the point.. Tyla' s sound is Amapiano inspired... Her winning an Afrobeats award and saying the win is appreciated but bittersweet at the same time is based on the above point... African music is indeed diverse.. Tems explained this and also did Tyla. Amapiano is from South Africa and Afrobeats is from Nigeria. You can't group the two under Afrobeats... They are not the same... Tyla also acknowledged the nominees in the category as to say, i know i won but shout out to the real Afrobeats artists... Hence "bittersweet"

Great Point., and of course there is more to African Music. That was the VMAs an American show, not global show. African music does not have to hit an American audience or global audience to be great music or popular. Afro Beats is American colonize genre, which occurs when you try to make popular music. @@TinyTalks2Much your right, but also proves my point. ‘Mexican food’ is water down food from that country. Mexican chefs created the food to appeal to Americans. Old white Americans want to simplify everything for their consumption. Trying to get recognition from country like America that fails to recognize true identity is foolish. People in America that actually love music do not identify African music as simply afrobeats or African Music. We call it music.
2:46:31 Joe seems to have an issue with Tyla, but Tems said nearly the same thing about Amapiano and Afrobeats on The Breakfast Club. Tyla's just pointing out that Amapiano, like Afrobeats, deserves its own recognition. It’s a genre from South Africa that stands on its own, and grouping them together only blurs that distinction.
It's the same sound. Matter of fact, what they do in Nigeria right now isn't afro beat. Fela kuti did afro beat, no one else does that. Afro beat is like conscious rap, non of the artist from Africa is doing that but still call their shxt afro beat? No jazz infusion, just raggaeton with ragga infusion.

Joe has to understand that Tyla was actually apologising to Nigerians because her music is not Afrobeats. It’s another genre of music called Amapiano. And her RACE category + culture is called Coloured here in South Africa it’s not a shame but something to be proud of. She did a horrible job! Also she won an award for an Afro beats sounding song! A real apology would have been I don’t deserve this award because I don’t make Afro beats! Also she should have been letting ppl know exactly what style of music she makes on all of these interviews and make sure she isn’t placed in the wrong genre!
A lot of people in America know nothing about Africa. There are people who have no idea what happened in South Africa. Race is also different in the US. Here, colored is an insult. If you call someone who is black colored, it's considered an insult, it was used to belittle. But in South Africa it is so different, and there is so much history there that we are not taught in school and many people do not care to learn. I knew immediately why she said she wasn't black, but this is why so many didn't. And her award...I'm sure there was no category for her to enter into because all music from Africa has been forced into the afro beats category
That Tyla take is a perfect example of what cause the beef with Americans and everybody else not just Africans. This girl makes music in a complete different genre, she does not need to adapt American ideologies to be accepted. Joe literally just went off on this girl talking so much shit as if shes doing something to hip hop. Its like Americans cant grasp the concept of a world where black people outside of the US dont see whatever Americans have going on as the ultimate goal. Ice can say afrobeats is not his thing he dont care for it, but the moment other people say yea i dont really fuck with your culture like that its war. People dont end up in america to be black people literally go there because thats where the industry and resources are. The major labels and infrastructures. Tems literally said the exact same thing as what Tyla said, i technically dont do afrobeats there are other genre of music coming out of Africa but shout out to all the artiste that fought to get us here.
This is all fine and dandy, but your commentary leaves a lot of room for ppl to shut you down with relative ease. The industry and infrastructure is here because of one very specific reason. Lol The POPULAR music coming from the continent sounds the way it sounds for a very specific reason. Lol Without that very key ingredient, the infrastructure that these artists seek and benefit from, would not exist as is. The sound that they are able to feed their families from, would not exist as is. Try not to be disingenuous when having these convos and they'll land better.
It’s not what cause the beef my friend. It works both ways. You may have never been a foreigner visiting or trying to make it in Africa. But let me tell you… you don’t talk first… you listen and learn and are told over and over how to move, about customs, respect, learn the language. Often times bc American is so diverse and with the outside having little awareness of race relations in the US people ESPECIALLY FOREIGN MINORITIES come here with little regard or care to understand OUR culture or even being culturally sensitive to US not even caring or acknowledging and come off some way. As a kid you learn but as an adult you’re expected to get it. Sucks but that’s it. I don’t agree with Joes take but I get it, just like you may understand the feelings towards black Americans. Huge disconnect and it takes both sides interesting in understanding for growth and positive way forward.
@@ItsGivingBrandNew My man i completely disagree! Everyone else outside of Americans seek to understand what is happening in America. When she made that comment about color her hesitation towards it was her acknowledging the nuance. Most minorities that end up in America learn to adapt to survive the environment after being teased and ridicule by Americans, the moment they create their own eco system they practice their own beliefs. Americans try to monopolize being black to the point they beef with other cultures about what their norm is. Tyla did nothing wrong, she doesnt want Usher grinding on her, in her country the term color mean something else she clarified it. she got an award for afrobeats and explain the difference between the regions. Her only downfall was not kissing everyones ass and making herself and her culture smaller to whatever Joee and everyone else believe she should. I've become quite the fan of Tyla, and I can honestly say based off her interviews and just general content, she seems to be very humble, & grateful for where she is, and where she's going. I don't believe she's tone deaf, just learning the way of American culture, on top of Black American POP culture. It sucks seeing her go through this, because we all just want to make music, unfortunately tho it's not that simple. There's alot of politics within our industry. Tyla's speech completely went over their heads. Tyla is not an Afrobeats artist. Americans tend to group all African music under Afrobeats.. So that's why she highlighted her single Water, it proves that other genres can also make an impact on a global scale.
Judging Kendrick’s “Let the Party Die” by replay value already lets you know Ice & Ish’s musical taste is 🗑️. Art is meant to convey artist’s feelings & make you feel something. Judging it off replay value is nearly the same as judging art based on sales.
Well replay value just means its a certain type of song that you will keep with you. Some music (most of kendricks) is more like a movie to me. Or a good limited tv show. I love his music and think his albums are great (all classics imo) but i dont really play them alot. @QueenTeaSipper, if you were South African or knew anything about Johannesburg in particular, you would know that Tyla is a very typical girl from Joburg. @@freddylloyd8083 You're incorrect on numerous points, and I understand your confusion. The short answer is your incorrect. The nuanced point is that you're pointing out how people identify but misunderstand the distinction. Your conflating a term including a group with being the group. Being colored does not imply being exclusively black in any country. I believe you are misinterpreting the colloquial term "people of color," which is not synonymous with "black." Colored is the accepted term for Asian, black, or mixed-race people. Furthermore, since 1807, there has been a distinction between negro, mulatto, and person of color. People of color served as a rallying cry and an identity, symbolizing the collective of all those who would face enslavement and thus require legal protection. In South Africa, the term "colored" does not refer to black people but rather to people of mixed ancestry. The problem with your argument, sir/mam, is that you don't understand what you're talking about respectfully. I can also continue with the historical use of negro to be colored to AA to minority back to AA, but it seems unnecessary at this point. Even MLK made a distinction between negro and colored. If this was a discussion about slurs, your argument would have more credence, but that's a different sidebar all together. I say all that to say no matter what country or timeline we look at - your argument doesn't work.

You get it
if you believed that truly you wouldn't have accepted the award is what your missing - this is the same as being colored and not black but will take all the black benefits - if you can't see the reoccurring issue - I can't help you. As a South African. Tyla was not wrong. African music is not just Afro-Beats. Especially in South Africa.
Great Point., and of course there is more to African Music. That was the VMAs an American show, not global show. African music does not have to hit an American audience or global audience to be great music or popular. Afro Beats is American colonize genre, which occurs when you try to make popular music. It is water down, pun intended!
I hear you ! In America it’s Afrobeats tho, just like Mexican food is American is called Mexican food and not just food
It’s the same concept.
@@TinyTalks2Much I hear you! Only if we could call Hip hop, American hip hop because it's from America
bro joe knows nothing about African music but the ones that are popular. Tyla isn’t wrong nor is tems, joe simply hates tyla because he feels she doesn’t have the “right” to speak the way she does
@@TinyTalks2Much your right, but also proves my point.

Her behaviour is basically the ideal behaviour in South Africa for a young lady her age to decern when she’s not comfortable with something that she wasn’t raised to accept.. yall like grinding on everything… she is completely normal to me and the problem is she is too South African and not a plant that’s she carries herself so genuinely and so does Tems who has actually lived and studied in South Africa for some time… thank you Mel for trying to open the eyes of the blind but the result is the same on Joe
Black people was called colored in the 1950s
She could've removed herself from the category.
He don’t care, as he said… he’s over the girl. Lol but I got it.
Joe kinda hushed after the Tems interview
This is all fine and dandy, but your commentary leaves a lot of room for ppl to shut you down with relative ease. The industry and infrastructure is here because of one very specific reason. Lol The POPULAR music coming from the continent sounds the way it sounds for a very specific reason. Lol Without that very key ingredient, the infrastructure that these artists seek and benefit from, would not exist as is. The sound that they are able to feed their families from, would not exist as is. Try not to be disingenuous when having these convos and they'll land better.
@@BaldwinFanonGarveyTureShakurX it doesn’t have to be Americans to be popular..
All the hip hop girls and vixens are way more arrogant and disturbingly outta pocket but Tyla behavior is unacceptable.
If you don't learn them, you can get lost in it. Tyla will get the hang of things, and continue to be the star she was destined to be! 💖

Your conflating a term including a group with being the group.
Being colored does not imply being exclusively black in any country. I believe you are misinterpreting the colloquial term "people of color," which is not synonymous with "black."
Colored is the accepted term for Asian, black, or mixed-race people.

Saying someone doesn't understand America culture having boundaries is a wild ignorant statement.
She was being awarded for bringing her culture.
Why not respect each other's cultures and boundaries.
No shit. Tyla is South African. Why would she understand American culture? Does Joe understand South African culture? I highly doubt it.

I just keep noticing Ish repeating EXACTLY what each person says after they say it 😵💫🤣
The timing of the kendrick record hits perfect because he's not doing what's "IDEAL" to the industry. y'all waiting for singles he has a bigger message for the culture and hip-hop as a whole and instead of capitalizing off the moment with a single he chose (as he tends to do) he chooses to address the culture on a serious note. THATS THE TAKE>
If people think this is a drake diss then it speaks to validity and thoughts of what Kendrick was talking about as a whole
I appreciate these long ass episodes that get me half way through my 8 hour shift! 🔥 😂
The Kendrick song was meant for people like Ice, Ish, and flip
You got that right

Joe budden having so much opinion about Tyla and doesn't even know our history is just soo American to me. To even call her a plant is weird why does she have to adapt being America when you guys don't even understand who she is and what she represents.
your proving his point - Someone has gotten into your circle that you don't understand or know what they represent is a plant. - I don't need to understand or know you - its not adding up why your here and how your here.
@@jaccl4539the same way Nigerians are known in America
@@jaccl4539 it was the never for you to understand hence why you'd call her an industry plant, having a amapiano song takes her to greater hights was absolutely out of her control, now it's Americans wanting her to adapt to what she's expected to be in America, the gag is 😂 she knows her worth and knows amapiano is not for Americans to understand, yea it's cute having amapiano trending dances by Americans from south Africa but yall don't even know the energy and the lyricism behind it all, the culture and lived experiences of it all, whereby you have a colored woman singing amapiano with some vernal and local adlips and call her a plant coz her amapiano seems sophisticated, enhanced and polished. South Africans doesn't have industry plant from where I'm from its hard earned, it's your projection of the shitty plants that were manufactured in America yall call artists and confuse it with someone who's not making music that you aren't even meant to understand 🤦

That take on Tyla was so disgusting, because why can't the girl have boundaries
She's in America now people going to have opinions about celebrities

Yeah. It was a lazy take. I think he's got more of a beef with how the industry is handling her than to Tyla personally. Granted, I thought the award being heavy is weird but this girl is really not problematic

Is it me or does Flip not think before he speaks sometimes
All the time.

He's a GREAT hype-man, he brings an excitement that is absent sans his presence, & he and Joe play-off each other well.
@nikkinic2269 he do the opposite too
@weird1877 he do but the most part he fails and Joe steals the joke Flip tried to make LoL
Hey does both to me. Sometimes he's perfect and sometimes it's like shut up flip wrong time dumass lol
You see what he did on the intro
I am proudly South African and fan of the pod, so disappointed at Joe’s ignorance, shoutout to Ish, Mel and big Parks for trying to teach 🙏🏾
Yes, the 3 you mentioned brought a balanced perspective. The crazy thing is that when you try and give more context about South African society, Joe doesn't want you to educate him. He has no interest, and therefore, his view of Tyla is so off and uninformed. There's also nothing wrong with emphasing that there are many genres of music that come out of Africa.
How could I skip that intro, that was amazing 😂
I would love it if they did this live with a call center for us to give insight on certain topics.
I’m gonna predict Kendrick’s album drops on MLK day. Just a thought 🤔.

These group are so ignorant when it comes to understanding African music. Tyla is so spot on. She literally talked about African music and these idiots are saying Afro beats. Afro beats is ONE of MANY GENRES in Africa. Amapiano is another genre that originated in South Africa. Water is NOT an afro beat song and should not be in the Afro beat category. Its disrespectful actually. Tyla is not an Afro beats artist. She is just an Artist. Just because an Artist happens to be from Africa doesn't mean they are automatically Afro beats artists. If Selena gomez or Beyonce had made the water song with the exact same beat and lyrics, do you think the song would be in the Afro beats category???Joe is literally upset over his own ignorance. Like you cant comprehend Africa has various genres of music? That would be like grouping every American artist into a rap category and just call them rappers just because they are American. Tyla actually pointed it out gracefully. Even Tems is not an Afro beats artist. They have way more range than that. Like didnt they listen to Tems album? The entire panel needs to go and educate themselves on African music. Afro beats is not an alternative name to African music.
100%
I'm not gone lie I like when the pod teaches you something. The south African topic really opened my eyes fr. Ish big props to him for being book smart
Idk it seems like Flip doesn’t have any real friends outside of being with his son all the time.
None of us do. "Real friends" are practically extinct. And being close with your teenage son is a blessing. If anything Flip up off that alone.

Every halftime show performer in the past wasn’t doing anything to be visible during the years prior to their halftime show performance. Why is that a stipulation for Wayne? I can name several performers that weren’t doing anything of significance prior to performing.
@@dominiquewoods4324 Usher has been a resident in Vegas . and he was working on the album . his team put him in that position for the game. what did Wayne’s team do with him to try and get him the spot? that would make them choose him over the one who is literally having the run of the year right now? think bro think . it’s a no brainer for them to want Kendrick

There’s nothing to the Tyla convo lol. People act differently, have different attitudes. Even that Tems clip she sounds annoyed, but, no that’s just how she talks lol. From the audio, Tyla sounded like she was actually cool with whoever she was asking to hold the award. And they are from a much more collective culture - in South Africa that shxt would probably be nothing. Anyway….. Her song didn’t open the door for African music - in this current wave.. Ckay - Love Nwantiti and Rema - Calm Down were big way before Water. Tems also. BUT She is right though, everything isn’t Afrobeats. South Africa does have it’s own music.. Amapiano, Kwaito, Gqom, etc. So, she is correct, she does show that African music can be mainstream beyond just Afrobeats. What’s sad about this convo is that South Africans are actually probably the closest to African Americans. Their experience, their music, their style, etc. Joe was poddin’ tho lol…. 😂 poddin’ poddin’

I feel like the reason this podcast is so successful is because of how different you guys are. It's like a friend group having a conversation. Everyone relates to it. The bleeped out part of the song could have been paying homage to Dee-1. Dee-1 is known for asking rappers who get on songs with him to keep it clean. It can’t be a coincidence that he bleeps out the line immediately after he mentions Dee-1. Just my opinion.
@@daeastbeast5046 well no because it's kendrick song and he's by himself. Joe's theory might be try about what's bleeped out and if that's true then Kenny and Drake should have never beefed. They have a common enemy and they could have dealt with that together.
