I heard a story of old artillery horse. After war it goes back logging in icy forrest of Finland but if there was anytihing strange like cigarette butt in his path he stopped and handler must clear the path in front of him. That horse had seen too many of his mates blown up by mines during war. 80 % of finnish artillery during WW II was still horse drawn. We call these warhorses ours silent heroes They hauled ammunition and food to troops and brought back wouded ja fallen ones without them we have had no chance to stop soviets. After the war they gome back to plow fields and to logging camps never moaned hardships they have had or have.

they look awesome! You can turn them very well, almost like driving a car, but with 2 horses! As someone who grew up with horses, I gotta say you are far better at training them than anyone I know!

Great working partnership that doesn't ruin the environment, unlike tractors churning everything up, and the horses plainly love their work! ❤❤

Keep 'em fed, keep 'em happy, keep 'em healthy and they'll keep on pulling.

Horses like to have a job, and be used. Their owner takes care to treat them well and makes the work as easy for them as possible.

Like any highly-skilled person and team, you make something that is grueling and difficult and potentially dangerous look easy. What a great team, they certainly have earned their carrots ;-)

Can you show what the horses are doing while you’re sawing the logs? Do they just graze near the truck?

I have seen farms and conservation areas in Great Britain returning to using draft horses as working better and with far less disruption and damages to various lands from forested to the easily disrupted areas of planting than large, heavy, not easily manageable in many spaces. I noticed how the horses are brushed/curried before seating the harness. I have seen many Amish draft horses sent to slaughter with terrible sores, scars, and even open wounds from the use of ill fitting harness equipment, along with whip marks along their backs. Many of these Amish horses are rescued and still have a good active life in front of them including or riding.

Really fun to see! Between the horsemanship, the attention to safety, and the low impact to the land, it's impressive all-around!
Quick question - are the green hair/tassels (?) on the headstalls practical, decorative, or both?
I'd also be curious to know how long the horse teams' work shifts tend to be - I know that endurance racers can go all day, and I also see that your teams get plenty of downtime as you cut and sort logs ... so I really can't guess what a reasonable shift might be for teams doing this kind of work. Thanks for sharing your work!

The tassels are culturally significant to loggers. Historically if one team can't haul something and another teamster and their team come in and do it successfully, they give their tassels to the team that completed the job/pull that they couldn't. Every team on a job would usually have different colored tassels. In regards to how long a work day is, it varies a lot. But in a normal work day they get a lot of breaks and usually are not working for more than 6 hours. Thanks for great questions.

@@downthetraillogging Wow, that's fascinating! Would the the teamster of the successful team display the 'won' tassels somewhere? I'm picturing a really impressive team just draped in them. LOL
I've been aware of horse logging as a practice (and its advantages over clearcutting) for some time now, but I've never gotten to see examples of it before. It clearly requires an extensive set of skills!
