This is both informative and educational. I try and support the rescues in the United States for the wonderful draft horses (I do not have the correct terminology) that are rescued from slaughter and have useful years to give from light work to riding to pets.

I was at the draft show and pulls in Okc a few years back... some of those guys there were just massive, 4 ft easy across the chest and built, tons of bone. Gotta say tho, saw some sorry feet! and ton of clips to keep the shoes on those blown out feet. Blows me away. You have a great team there.

Fabulous how your horses are standing while two skid steers are loading simultaneously. Old pictures of logging in the Northwest or in Minnesota show that huge loads were moved with horses, it all depended on how many and which technology they used, for example carts with huge wheels or respectively iced tracks in winter.

@@downthetrailloggingI train hunter jumpers and your horses are more trained then all mine put together 😂
Just wondering why you use horses and don’t just use machines to move the logs? Just watched your video on your girls and they look happy, healthy and love their job. No horse is going to stand so calmly and follow voice commands like that if they didn’t enjoy pleasing you. They look well fed and definitely not trained with fear. Just some good girls you have! Good job Sir ❤

It's impressive that these magazines are no joke. Theoretically, they can be loaded with horses?

Not to be one of those people, 1:17 but the internet tells me green oak is more like 60 pounds per cubic foot, which would be 5 pounds per board foot. But maybe I’m wrong, where did your numbers come from?

    • @downthetraillogging

Look up green log weight not finished weight. Log weight includes bark etc and comes in heavier than trimmed green wood. You can use a log weight calculator. The log truck is weighed empty and loaded per load and it's common industry knowledge that hardwoods weigh in at around 14 lbs per board foot of green log weight. That log actually weighed more when we brought it in because of the butt flare.

Thank you for the good question. There is variance for sure in regions, species etc.

I’m still on the fence about it being 10,000 lbs. from a Doyle scale, it must have been 42” and 8’. Live oak log charts say 731 lbs per foot, so 5848 lbs. or it works out to be about 75 cubic feet, and even if you round up to 100 to account for flare and use 70lbs per cubic foot for live oak, it’s still only 7000.

Heh buddy I don't know what you are looking at. But you are correct on one thing the log on the small end inside the bark is 42" and the length is 8' 8" We do this every day and get fact checked per load at the mill. And the mill sure don't want to pay more than they have to. It isn't theoretical numbers for us. Have a great day.
