- A rare, early example of the determination & steadfast perseverance of Steve Harris. . .steering the Maiden ship through the tumultuous, turbulent maelstrom of dealing with Paul Di'anno! THE SHOW MUST GO ON!
Not negging on Paul, I love him and miss his raw energy & punk attitude! He was crucial to the magic & atmosphere of early Maiden. Current Maiden could use some of his brashness & spontaneity, to alleviate their ponderous predictability & stagnation. . .but, that's a rant for a future livestream. . .
Stay strong & TRUE. . .Hail & Cheers!

Steve is one of a kind! Maiden is Maiden thanks to this unbelievable artist, entrepreneur, businessman, musician, leader... always determined, humble and clever!
Bless You, Steve.
Greetings from your second homeland, PORTUGAL
🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
Iron Maiden exists because of Steve and his determination, focused mindset and charisma.
also because his father is Malcom
Fact. 100% exactly.
True but he's also given up on Maiden at one time, because he couldn't find anyone who was committed to it. It was not long after that when he's invited Dave once again and they've made it work again. Who knows what would happen if Dave wasn't eager to work with Steve back then? Steve would probably focus on his football skills and become a decent striker but there wouldn't be IM. Up the Irons.
He's seriously one of the most determined people in all of entertainment. He had a vision for this band, all the way down to ancillary stuff like the artwork and logo, and wouldn't let anyone get in the way of his vision. That's why there were so many lineup changes in the early days: if you weren't committed, he had no use for you.
Which meant that when the band finally stabilized, they were loaded for bear. Everyone who was there 39 years ago is still there.
Steve tells a story that Maiden could've signed a recording contract 2 years earlier than they did. "All we had to do was cut off our hair and play punk." Imagine being 21 years old, with a record company exec holding a contract in front of you, and having the willpower to say no and wait for something better to come along. Amazing maturity.
His awesome songwriting and playing too. He is Iron Maiden.
Every band needs a Steve Harris in their lineup, he’s the literal beating heart of Maiden
Very TRUE!
@@talesoftruemetal Most successful bands have one. The combination of vision and focus.
Steve Harris : Bass, lyrics, music, singer, leader, frontman....everywhere, like Dave Mustaine ...
I was there ! The band were in the Black Horse pub across from the Unity Hall before the gig. I was in but under age but thats another story!
Woah! I'm surprised how GOOD Steve sounds. He could have easily been a vocalist if he wanted to.
He sings every word to every song when they play live anyways. Just not into a mic! 😂😂
@@masonb9788 Indeed! Never thought he would have sounded that good though. If he did backing vocals sometimes during the concerts, that'd be awesome!
I've heard this story many times. Now, I've witnessed it for the first time. A great piece of Iron Maiden history.
I hear NOTHING wrong with his vocals, honestly. Especially for a live version.
Really not that bad! Wish Steve have done some more (partial) singing on Maiden tracks! Thanks for this record and up the irons! 😉🤘
Absolutely bloody brilliant!! A true living legend!!
Wow Steve sounds awesome, heard about Steve singing forever ago never woulda figured he sounded so natural. The recording is so beautifully crunchy and distorted. What a treat. They sound really keyed in to make up for Paul. Prob my fav version of running free
Rough as it is, it sounded better than I expected. Steve always pulls shit off.
You're joking. The recording sucks big but it's obvious as it was probably 1982 or something.
@@aimfuldrifter I sometimes like rough recordings better than polished versions of the same song. Not as a rule, but it's all just sound, I don't think there's a hierarchy and they do sound like they're in the groove there so no I wasn't joking.
@@aimfuldrifter you are wrong, bruce Dickinson got into the band in 1981, bro
If anyone is curious, this would have been on 7 Feb 1980.
(Steve mentions the single for Running Free would be released “tomorrow”, which was released 8 Feb 80.)
Correct, as seen in the concert poster & ticket stub at the beginning of the video. Hail & Cheers!
Dennis with the backup vocals!!! Such a distinct voice
It doesn't get brought up enough how, in such a short time, really defined himself with his backing vocals in the band
awesome i never knew someone actually recorded this , as i read about this famous moment in maiden history
fora long time. and he's better than i expected. good job steve!! thank you for posting this...
Not bad at all, his vocals are decent...
Besides, he always sings the lyrics on stage anyway...
So true, lol. . .Hail & Cheers!
He knows 'em, 'cause he wrote 'em
It doesn't sound bad really!
Sounds like Dennis Stratton.
I think they were both singing. Dennis did backgrounds live like Adrian
Great upload. Thank you.
Steve had such determination. Brilliant.
Up The Irons! The show must go on. Steve Team Harris.
Okay, that was MUCH better than I expected!
Steve Harris is one of my three favorite bassists ever (with Geddy Lee and Geezer Butler), and absolutely my biggest influence since I first started playing bass ( it was summer of 86). Still my biggest influence today, indeed!
A great bassist, not the most technical maybe, but one of the most important ever, in Heavy Metal music. One of the musicians I admire most, surely.
It seems that he was not bad at singing too! 😃
Greetings from Italy!
Hail! I totally agree with you. His style, influence, professionalism & lack of ego are one in a million in this business. . .truly, THE MAN!
And of course, there's the mighty Lemmy Kilmister.
Hey! You quoted my favorites Rick bass players! The first time I picked up a bass it was listening to Maiden and Rush! Good influences you have!
@@AbuBakrislam We both have good tastes, it seems! 😆
Surely Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath were (are) already two of my favorite bands before I had started playing bass. Rush, in truth, when in 87 I have discovered them (with the Exit...Stage Left VHS ) I had already started with bass since a year; but before that video had yet finished, I had already Geddy Lee among my favorite bassists! Both for his playing and for his Rickenbacker sound.
Rickenbacker is my absolute favorite bass, and it is the one I use the most for bass covers on my channel.
Other Rick players that I appreciate much are Chris Squire and Graeme Murray.
Greetings!
@@sergiodambrosio363 Thank you for you answer surely I will check your channel Greetings from Brazil!
Steve Harris is Iron Maiden his song writing , bass playing and drive.Awesome Musician
First maiden show I saw was at new haven coliseum in conn
They opened for priest , paul was there singer. He was ok. Bruce is at another level and made maiden the best metal band ever
I always liked Paul better!!!!
Bruce is great... But I think they lost there roughness letting Paul go...!
Bruce Dickinson is the superior singer and front man.
But their best albums are Iron Maiden and Killers.
YES! This was the Maiden I fell in love with that summer of 79 and 80. At that time they were the talk of all the Music Papers in the UK. I remember racing out to our local record shop in Northwood and grabbing a copy of their first LP (which did not have Sanctuary as it was later released as a single), running back to my Aunts, placing it on my cousin's record player and WOW! Every song was like nothing I had heard before, Pauls vocals and lyrics were so raw, this literally change how I saw from then on and I know or thought (yes thought) if these guys can get a record deal playing this music maybe there is hope for me yet.
1981 while in SA and Dallas TX we got to see Maiden on the Killers Tour, completely wipe the floor of the once Gods of Metal Judas Priest who then were on their Point of Commercialism (Point of Entry) tour. Maiden live (then) played as good if not better than they did in the studio. Another year and Maiden Japan came out and then Number of the Beast and the band were never the same live again. Gone was the RAW energy and RAW performance. While Bruce was incredible in the studio he could not deliver well on stage, not in the three times I would see him yet still favor his work with Samson where he actually sang (beautifully) and his melodic approach unique and a pleasure to listen to.
Thank you for sharing this recording of Steve singing RUNNING FREE, Steve was the friendliest and most receptive of the band to their fans an example of this was 1981 SA TX Harris is standing outside the Holiday Inn on Crocket Street just across from the convention center where they had played earlier... We instantly recognized him and engaged him in conversation here's my 1979 cutting from Sounds and Melody Maker... Steve invited the four of us to the hotel bar for drinks and to continue talking as he of course was thrilled to have such dedicated fans in a new city (that night most everyone were there to see Priest and were less enthusiastic for Maiden who warmed up the show. We four were the only ones in the SA convention center to stand upon our chairs and went mad for Maiden until security chased us around from isle to isle during Maiden's set). Later that night Harris gives us tickets to come see them in Dallas the following night where by act of God, Maiden were given an additional 15 minutes for their set and played Remember Tomorrow and Running Free of course from the first lp. Each of the band then were so friendly, Clive Burr and Dianno and Steve so appreciated dedicated fans in this new continent known as the United States.
As I was a frontman/volcalist myself I idolized Dianno until I noticed his use or misuse of substances which later caused him to be ejected from the band. Surely all parties concerned were sad to come to that point as they had all been through so much in the trenches of the UK, playing a slue of tiny venues and with each performance giving their all to their fans, never was a band with the exception of early Motorhead) that were so loyal back to their followers. Fast forward to the mid and late 80s Maiden of course became more mainstream and that RAWness was polished away.
Thank you for sharing those amazing memories! You are TRUE!!! HAIL & Cheers!
When they were young and dangerous and running free!
The original line up🔥🎸

Nice job, 'Arry!!!
And Praying Mantis on the bill too, I'm happy to see - also still going strong and a really good bunch of blokes, them!
Agreed. . .love Praying Mantis. . .so melodic!
Thanks for uploading and for the subtitles!

Amazing! Steve sounds great!!! And the fans seem to be enjoying it a lot. Little did they know they were witnessing a historical event.
I'm from Wakefield and never knew Iron Maiden played the Unity Hall.
Arri done alright there. Guy is a legend!
Not a Maiden fan but their first two albums was my cup of char. Obviously more into punk and saw them with Bruce 3 times in the 80s because of an ex but this sounded great! 🏴
That's why he is the BOSS! |m| #UpTheIrons
❤ Not bad at all,,,,,,,, Steve is a genius and deserves our eternal Respect for being focused and knowing exactly what he was doing
Very cool! Steve stepped up to the plate. I wish Dennis Stratton sang lead on some of their early songs. His voice is incredible, absolutely love his singing on Praying Mantis' Predator in Disguise album.
Totally agree, he's so melodic. . .Hail & Cheers!
He wasn't so bad. I wish he had continued. His voice's got character.
This is AWESOME thanks!!
You're welcome. . .thanks for watching! Hail & Cheers!
Had heard Prolwer before from that gig, now Running Free. Thanks and Up the Irons
You're welcome! I posted all the songs Steve sang on my Channel! Great name by the way, lol!
Sounds Fine.
I think this Harris kid is a good singer and he is gonna go places! But I am worried! What if he loses his voice? He should most def have a very solid back up plan. I recommend him trying the bass guitar --he seems like he'd be GREAT at that --tall, lanky, with a menacing look on his face as he slaps that bass through those future classic Maiden songs like Running Free, Remember Tomorrow, the self entitled Iron Maiden and Sanctuary. Imagine this kid singer scorching a bass guitar on Phantom of the Opera! Hell, if he REALLY wanted to, he doesn't have to give up the singing entirely! Imagine this Harris kid singer turned bassist and upping these irons by forcibly lip-sync singing to ALL of the Iron Maiden songs as his fingers blazed through the blistering fan favorite, Phantom of the Opera! Do you hear what I'm singin' or di'anno what I mean?
Better than I thought!
Steve has always been the voice of Maiden. I always entertained the idea of what he would have sounded like singing for them on some songs. In some cases no one can sing you wrote better than the writer…thanks for sharing this!
Neat! Steve is my #1 hero. What I'd like to see is that legendary show where Paul Di`Anno was arrested and Steve did all the vocals until Paul could return. I don't know if it was recorded--haven't been able to find it, but it would be awesome, mistakes and all (if there were any!)
It was recorded, I found it on mp3 format some years ago now, it's called Maiden Voyage, but the Iron Maiden which was in existence around the late 60s and very early 70s released their one and only album with the same name.
Steve's the boss.
Up the irons.
Up the mighty Irons!!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘
Arrepiado, emocionado, obrigado.
Steve sounded pretty good and I am a big Paul fan.
That's awesome!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

I was at this gig, & the follow up when they returned on the next tour to make up for Paul not singing on some of the songs.
Amazing, you're very lucky!
@@talesoftruemetal It was a great time (early 80's), right at the birth of NWOBHM, quite a few of those bands played at the Unity Hall, Maiden, Preying Mantis, Saxon, & a resurgent SLADE who the played the loudest gig I've ever attended in that very venue.
I like it
Steve just rules. He makes out sound like earing..
Not fukin bad Mr. Steve Harris!
Steve's not bad at all, the only issue is that (at least at the moment) he probably had no proper training on how to use his voice, so even if he sang that tune perfectly OK, he probably would have shot his vocal cords after a few gigs. Because most of the time, if you already can sing fine, a good vocal training helps you build endurance so you don't stress your larynx. (It also expands your range, yes, but most importantly it makes you LAST as a singer! 😀)
Practise helps even without coaching, you do it more you'll start to notice what hurts you.
That's especially true with harsh vocals because you probably won't make it more than a few syllables before you're hurt (for the day) if you're not doing it safely.
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 true, but Steve wasn't meant to be the lead singer, so he probably didn't even practice, he just stepped up to the microphone, to sub for DiAnno. And for an untrained singer, he did pretty good.
@@alessandroarcuri209 Absolutely.
But also, we might all be underestimating how much practice/training he has too, just because he doesn't do lead vocals normally.
He's done backup vocals the whole time though, so he must practice at least a bit.
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 yep, doing backing vocals helps a lot, too. It's less demanding 'cause you're only singing in certain points, but at least you're kinda halfway there, as opposed to starting from zero.
@@alessandroarcuri209 It's also one of those things that suggests he already knew how to sing adequately.
Singing and playing together is pretty hard so even if you can pull it off, you might feel the performance overall suffers. I'd imagine it's easier to be able to focus on playing and let someone else be an energetic frontman while you get to be an energetic bass player - instead of lacking energy because you're too focused to move around.
How could someone who speaks THAT Cockney sing sounding THAT American?!?
(Neither is an insult, Steve Harris is one of my favorite Earthlings of all time, I just found it peculiar)
Because you use your vocal cords differently when you sing compared to when you talk.
Listen to other strong accented people and they will sing sounding differently, eg ozzy, Adele, the Las from Newcastle (sorry can't remember her name)
@@raymondjames1341 Well, that goes without saying. (You're correct) But it seemed so different.
By contrast, John Denver sounds exactly like John Denver whether he's speaking or singing, you can tell it's him just by his voice.
I could say the same for Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.
(My examples seem to be getting progressively worse)
What shocked my brain was if no one told me that was Steve Harris singing, I probably wouldn't have been able to guess.
@@ALL_OUT_OF_BUBBLEGUM I listen to a lot of black metal.... those guys and gals always sound so different when they sing.
In a documentary about Iron maiden, their manager ??smallwood I think says that Steve was an awful singer, back in the early days anyway.
@@raymondjames1341 He definitely wasn't what I would call a lead vocalist or front man.
And as far as black metal goes, it usually has a particular singing style, with specific vocal effects. It would be necessary for a person to sound different singing black metal than the way they do speaking. Same with death metal.
Many singers sing without their natural accent. In some cases it makes the lyrics easier to enunciate or flow better with the song.
Thank goodness Steve didn’t have to fill in for Bruce
They'd have had to cancel if Steve tried to cover for Bruce. Nobody can even come close to him on vocals. I honestly don't think Steve would even try.
Unity hall still stands in Wakefield. I believe it’s unoccupied at this moment, and the council keeps coming up with ideas of ‘what shall we do with the place…’ , which seem to get abandoned.
A few good bands played the hall around this time. Maiden actually played there twice in 1980. So did the French band Trust with a fellow called Nicko McBrain on the drums ! 🥁
Eddie is wondering why Steve didn't take the microphone after Paul??
And 40 yr later he plays around the corner with his band british lion
Dennis has the dominant voice in the chorus.
Up the irons!
🇧🇷
This seems to cast doubt on the existence of 'lead singer disease' because Paul graciously allowed Steve to sing lead. Paul and Steve are BOTH due credit for what Maiden became soon after.
Not bad Mr Harris.
All said, Steve and Dennis did a very commendable job here.
Clive Burr
Is Dennis Stratton in iron Maiden at this point? It sounds like him singing backing vocals.
Stratton was in the band from December '79 through October 1980. This show was on 7 February 1980 so he would've been there.
Yes, that's him.
