  • In 1923, steam locomotives, the height of modern technology, were fast and exciting. Although airplanes were newer, and automobiles and roads were quickly improving, steam was still the prime mover of high-speed transport. The excitement of seeing a huge working locomotive flash by spewing steam, smoke and cinders is hard to describe. Their eerie whistles were at once frightening and exhilarating. Trains were a symbol of technology improving people's lives, of the hope for an exciting new future. This is especially poignant so soon after World War I, where technology was used to create previously unimagined horrors. The Music: The 1923 Mouvement Symphonique "Pacific 231" of Arthur Honegger is the driving force behind this video. The video's visual elements are collected from many sources, and are added to the music so that those who've never experienced the sheer power and awesome speed of steam might have some notion of what the composer saw.

Voir tous ces trains d'antan me bouleverse !
    Continue, jeune Padawan.

    Fascinating music!!! You can really sense the driving force in the music - very organic and describing - just like a natural extension of the man's feelings.
    Very fascinating!!!

    Oui, votre français est tout à fait correct, je dois avouer. D'ailleurs, je voudrais ajouter que je trouve Arthur Honegger d'une magnificence à toutes épreuves et je suis grandement ému par ses musiques usuelles.

    Ravel Conc L Hand was one of several commissions for Left hand by Paul Wittgenstein, pianist who lost his R arm in WWI. Years ago, descriptions of this piece said something like "jazz influence," or some such, while to me it sounded very descriptive-e.g. of soldiers marching, contrasting sharply with a theme seemingly of childlike innocence. The whole piece affects me as an expression of disillusionment directly caused by the war. But I hasten to add, because everyone hears different, YMMV!

  • @TheInvakk
    @TheInvakk 11 років тому +3

    I got what you meant after I listened those. Except that Ravel's concerto came more cryptic and couldn't get what wanted to do. And why just for left hand? That piece certainly can be played with both hands. What am I missing? (Sorry for my ignorance of this subject and questions, but you are satisfyingly explanatory and I don't get chance like this much :)

    @vitavision A matter of preference. The styles of the two composers are very different, not to mention the train being depicted in the music.

  • @TheInvakk
    @TheInvakk 11 років тому

    A master piece, though one thing that I don't understand is that If He really loves the trains, why did he make a music about a train's movement, but in a psychologically tense way?

    Just another perspective. Historical context is key to many pieces for me. Two others from that time: Roussel’s Sym 2 (1921-Roussel was in the French Navy before he was a composer, was an ambulance driver during WWI-long intro of 1st mvt seems like a lament with disbelief at the destruction-further on one could be a reminiscence of the activity of war, & depiction of civilian life away from the Front taking what pleasure they might). Different treatment of WWI: Ravel’s Conc for Left Hand.

    This video was shown live in a performance of Honegger's Pacific 231 by the Topeka Symphony Orchestra, conducted by John Strickler, on October 24, 2009. The video "A Kansas Impression," also on UA-cam, was made as a result of our visit.

  • @logoxyz
    @logoxyz  16 років тому +1

    Using footage from many sources, I aimed to directly connect the video with what the music is saying. Honegger's 1923 piece, especially near the end where full speed is reached, is possibly the inspiration for Ravel's 1928 Bolero. Some of the steam engines shown are contemporaneous with the music, some are not. It is interesting to note that the music is a celebration of modern technology, even though written not long after the Great War of 1914-1918 (WWI) (continued)

    Thank you! As an aside, our US naming convention counts the wheels on both sides, so the steam engine a European calls a Pacific 2-3-1, we would call a Pacific 4-6-2.

    @absinth98 it's courageous to cosfess you find it boring, because ther's noting to be proud of. Try to understand it rather, because it's great piece of music and great video too. But if you won't don't worry - someone has to sweap the streets, you don't need to have good taste for it.... But try, try. And give my regards to your teacher, he knows waht's good.

    (conclusion), in which technology was used to wreak horror. I hear Pacific 231 as a hopeful affirmation of human progress after the war. Related to that, also listen to Honegger's Symphony 2 (1941) and Symphony 3 "Liturgique" (1945-46), both related to the 2nd World War and both of which end in a prayer-like mode, a hope for a better world.

    Thank you! Your comment (all these comments) really makes my day! Tomenicus, I have one more Honegger selection here on UA-cam, "Cherry Orchard", which is very different (hope it's not too tame for your son!). Honegger's music has a very wide emotional range! OTOH, my Metropolis series to music of Nemtin (after Scriabin) may be too scary for a 2 year old, better preview it yourself beforehand! Thanks again!

    In my video's title, there is a mistake. In quoting the composer on Pacific 2-3-1, I read it as 120 miles per hour, when it was actually 120 kilometers per hour. Therefore, I should have written either 120 kph or 75 mph. I would just correct it on the video and repost, but I don't think there's a way of doing that without discarding the present one and putting up a brand new video...

    WWI (1914-1918), used emerging technology to kill lots of people, surely must have caused ambivalence about machinery in people living in 1923. Great good and great evil were made possible by the technological revolution that had been gaining incredible speed throughout the 19th century. And, I still remember as a kid the scary thrill of being near the tracks when a speeding steam locomotive flashed by, its whistle bellowing, with occasional hot cinders and sudden bursts of live steam!
