Hey, this is reality TV (or YT); when it's raining we ought to hear the rain on a metal roof.
I don't think I've told you how much I appreciate that your (video) day ends with a family supper (dinner?). There are far too many families in this culture that don't have that regular time when all are together. Of course, the Lumnahs regularly spend other portions of the day together as well which makes you an even better example for families to follow.

We raised 4 kids in the country, and supper time was our time. Prayer, Food, company, school friends, good conversations (sometimes several going on simultaneously) TV off, phone ringer off, fun. Secrets never got kept, but promises did. Thankfully my kids kept this tradition going on when they raised their kids. A family will be truly be blessed when they simply share supper.

You will get a lot of suggestions about the shop layout I'm sure. I only have one suggestion. Cover some of your workbench with metal, maybe the section under your vise. It is so nice to be able to wipe it off, and no oil or gas gets down into your wood. I was a mobile mechanic for years and learned the value of that. I went to a local store where they made trim for metal roofing and they bent the cover so it fit like a glove. It covers the back splash guard, bench top, then is folded so it slides under the front lip of the bench. Again, it fits perfect and eaves a clean looking bench. Surprisingly didn't cost much either.

Suggestion... make everything on wheels, including the workbench(s). There are a ton of locking flip down feet, etc... believe me, one day you will wish you could roll everything over to one side if the shop and deep clean the floors. Also, I started out with open shelves on wheels, and quickly changed over to rolling upright metal storage cabinets on wheels. I keep the doors closed, and it helps to keep the dust off of whatever is stored inside. I still have some rolling open shelving for big stuff that won’t fit in a cabinet, but those items and the shelves themselves are coated in dust! Can’t wait to see what YOU decide.

For the workshop, all the ideas you mentioned sound really good. My focus tends to be about usability and comfort. Specifically, I think around the benches you should have the rubber flooring to save your knees, back, and keep you from standing on cold concrete--you'll thank me in 20 years. Also consider having an island bench that is moveable and add extra storage. Just like having a kitchen island, that way you don't have to constantly run from side to side, you only need to pivot. AND since it's moveable, you can position it anywhere. So, for example, Livies or Gina wants to work on something but you're already in the middle of something, in a static setup and you'd be constantly dancing around and annoying each other. With a moveable bench they could set up their own area.

My shop is deep like yours. I have mine setup in three parts. Right inside the doors i have the yard stuff we are always grabbing. One high shelve and wall hangers and mobile things we use outside. Next part is all my mechanical stuff to work on the car, truck and tractor. I have all of my big tool boxes , compressor, parts shelved and bench with vise. The rest is the wood shop. U have a u shaped bench with overhead wood storage. Easy to sort and grab. Watch your chop saw placement so you can cut long. I have my table saw incorperated in a large runout table in the center that is mobile but locks in place. Use LED lighting and a lot of it. As much as you can afford and makes sense. Seeing your work make everything easier. Have about three drop down electric hook ups tall enough to not hit the top of the truck. Same with air compressor drops. Make sure you do a vac system for your wood work or you will have dust all over the place. Not sure about your ceiling. I wonder how much dust it will collect.
Well. Its a nice shop. I love mine but i have had several setups and this works best for me. Make sure you do what works for you. I have worked with and without heat but not anymore. Heat is important. You might want to insulate that g-door.
Love watching your videos. Good luck and cant wait to see what you do.

Build the right hand leg of the "u" shaped bench as a separate bench on wheels. You can build it with toggle clamps attached to connect it to the rest of the bench and wall to make it stationary when needed. Jay Bates just built a bench made of 2 separate halves clamped together.

    • @greggmcclelland8430
      @greggmcclelland8430 4 роки тому +15

I love this comment because having everything portable on wheels is really handy. Including your chop saw. I would ditch the stationary stand at some point and get a portable gravity stand. Dewalt makes a gravity stand like my Bosch stand and they work fantastic for going to remote job sites easily. with all the dewalt stuff you advertise freely every day....honestly you should get a sponsorship and sample for every dewalt product that you need. Having wheels will allow you to rearrange the work benches to allow you to set them up as a studio with the bench between you and the camera. It will let allow you to work on extra long pieces that don't fit in the U pattern (I'm thinking windmill blades and tower pieces....hint, hint...)
As far as other benches go, if you do put wheels on them, make a way to lock them down so the bench doesn't move *(especially if you have a vise). This could be as simple as a set of blocks to chock the wheels or buying wheels with locks built in. Also, larger diameter wheels with bearings in them and rubber tires can also be pushed out onto the gravel if you need to clean out EVERYTHING from the barn.
Love the barn. Its been fun to watch the progress.

I love it when you walk to do afternoon chores with Olivia. Sharing your day with her keeps it special for her to. We had a 24 x 32 garage with 2 big doors and 2 utility doors. On the one side we bought 2 of the kits for workbench's from Menards. The were made from 2 x4's and were very strong and rugged. They also had one shelf storage underneath. Very user friendly and easy to clean. Kept everything from being on the floor. Remember to put in lots of pluggins along the benches for ease of convenience. Also check out Pinterest Gina for battery holders for power tools. Al can easily build one.

I used this when remodeling the kitchen too. Boxes make great "cabinets" and can even be taped to the wall for upper placement ideas.

My advice would be to keep everything movable including the workbenches then try different configurations as you do projects, see what suits you. Stuff will naturally migrate to where it's comfortable for you. Over the next year or so you'll get the sense of where you want things and what layout works the best for you. First thing I'd do, if it was my space, would be to figure out the best configuration for that ladder to the loft because it seems to be in your way more often than not.

If you are going to have the chop saw inset in one upright of the "U", then your vise should be at the end of the other upright of the "U". You want it to be on a corner so you can work at it from a lot of angles, and it would be in the way of your lumber if it were on the same side as the saw.
Wranglerstar has done two series on workbenches. One was recent making and setting up one in his barn shop (general work). It was up against the wall. The other was a few years ago when he made a larger, freestanding one with a tool well for his woodshop. Paul Sellars also has a couple of series on making workbenches. (I believe all of the above have the vise at a corner.)

Hinge part of your benches with drop down legs , they hang down against the wall when not in use leaving more floor space when needed. Worked like a charm in my small shop. You never have enough room.

Your idea for work bench is great. Suggestion is recessed bottom shelf, so your knees don't get knocked around. The recessed shelf has those pull out open shelf thing you would use for pots and pans in a kitchen cabinet for easier access. Also a dedicated charging station for all your batteries. Love all your videos. Have a blessed day.

In my shop the chop saw was against the end wall and built in. This leave all the other walls clear with moveable benches on them for assembly, crafts, repair work, etc.... and the shop can be reconfigured for different projects as needed or interest change.

I agree, and it was suggested years ago by Norm Abrams from This Old House. I believe that he had a hardwood strip around the edges, flush with the top of the Masonite. Easy to replace Masonite when it gets all beat up.

Put the chop saw as well as the table saw on rolling carts that can be clamped to the rest of the workbenches. You will thank yourself forever when you need to move them around through the property for future projects. Get the big wheels that can handle terrain. Make everything out of 2 x 4's and 3/4" plywood. It will be sturdy enough for Olivia's grandchildren to still be using.

I'm an older person and it has been my experience that you need to build in flexibility and mobility with your bench areas. Many home kitchens have islands that are permanent in nature. A mobile island in your shop area would adapt to your different projects. I grew up in a blue collar family. My dad was a carpenter, plumber, electrician, brick layer, cinder block foundation person and more.. These were the days before the separation of trades. There is such a satisfaction when you build something with your own two hands. Be careful in the beginning to build too much fixed space.I found that later on with limited space, the ability to have mobility and multifunctional spaces a must. I enjoy watching you at work. Wish there were more of you in this country.

Hi everyone, many thanks for all your excellent videos, we look forward each day to the vlogs. In the workshop, consider a partition wall where the upper floor finishes, install a good dust extraction unit, hey, you now have a good woodworking environment which would keep the rest of the workshop dust free. The roast pork looked “very” good.

That Lil Cowgirl Olivia is growing & she’s so intelligent 😁❤️👍
My suggestion for the ceiling to cover over the foam. Is this paneling you can get at Lowe’s or Home Depot that looks like tongue & Grove wood. You could probably get it in the Color to match your walls. It’s also thin & light weight 4’x8’sheets like regular paneling that goes on walls of the house. U can get it with about any wood look. It would be easy to put up to cover your foam & it would look more like a cabin inside. 🤷‍♂️

Susie'sSoap&Stuff they already come that way with satin finish on them. They are paneling like you put on the walls. But you can get them now that look like boards like what’s on his walls already , you can also get it that looks like a brick 🧱 wall, just all kinds of designs on them & they are already come with shiny satin finish.👍

I even bolted vises to them. Also easy for one or two people to move around as needed. We love them. And we have re-arranged the shop a few times so its nice to move them mobile.

Two suggestions: 1. Make sure you have a work bench for working on greasy/oily things -cars, tractors, chainsaws etc separate from the bench you will use for wood and other crafts/projects. A metal top bench for grease would be best; once you get grease and oil in wood it'll never come out. 2. I would suggest that the top of at least one of your wood work/craft tables be made with a surface you can replace fairly easy (good solid plywood perhaps). This gives you flexibility to secure (screw) blocks or other things directly to the table top temporarily without spoiling a nice butcher block finish of other work surfaces. Clamping for most wood working projects is usually fine but where the shop is meant to be multi-purpose, you may find that helpful.

The polyurethane really pops the character of the wood with the knots and the post and beam construction. Re ceiling, the exposed insulation can be a sawdust magnet making it dingy over time, cutting your light, and harder to blow off the dust. If you can seal that with a white/ light paint, and darken the rafters, that would tie the whole place together. You'll have to check with your insulation firm as to what you can put on the exposed foam. I switched my 4ft sections of hallogen and florescent lights to 4ft LEDs and am very impressed with the brightness plus with their low power draw I no longer have to worry about popping a breaker, while using heavy machines. Looks great!!

Video was done well dispite light and rain. I'd recommend the UA-cam channel "I like to make stuff." Bob does a lot of projects and one was updating his work station. You may get an idea or two there. Maybe do a "work shop idea" and a "craft shop idea" search on Pintrest, you may get lucky on there. If I see a video I'll try to update this comment.

Raining here in SE Texas too. Like your ideas on the shop set up. I’m sure you’ll see what changes are needed as you go. You can never have too much lighting and outlets. Be generous with the outlets. Like overkill. That way you’ll never need extension cords.

I like the layout that you were talking about. The one thing that is constant in a workshop is that your needs will change with time so as you go forward, the layout will be tinkered with to better serve the use you have. And you will see you will outgrow it later on down the road and need it twice as big, maybe building your shop and letting your wife and daughter use it for their interest that dont like to be around sawdust. Looking good, i like the finish. I do think i would cover the foam in the ceiling so it doesnt collect fine dust that could fall and ruin a finish on future projects. Something fast and easy like 1/4 plywood or MDF painted white or finished like the walls.

That way he knew at a glance if any were missing. His OCD was in evidence everywhere. Lol. I also had painted pegboard in my room to keep me organized. Love the stuff.

My Grandpa (who lived on a farm) had part numbers on all of his shop hardware(bolts, nuts, screws, nails, cotter pins....) and built little wooden boxes to house each. Then he had a catalog and location of each hardware. When My Grandpa passed, I inherited his hardware shelves. My daughter thought the wooden boxes were so cool she dumped all of the the hardware into plastic bags and used the boxes as containers for flowers on the guest tables at her wedding. That was three years ago, and I'm still trying to get all of the mess sorted out. LOL

My husband has heavy duty lockable wheels on old kitchen units and cupboards in his Worksop allowing him to move them around, yet at the same time able to lock them once moved. He then made a shelving unit with 24 x 4” square slots. He bought 24 x 4” square containers and put them in the 24 holes, these containers were filled with nails and screws. He mounted the whole thing to the wall. All containers have been labelled with the size of the screws etc and what they’re used for ie wood, metal, plaster etc, even including slots for different size wall plugs too. He also got a 4 x 1” length of pine, hung it on the wall, like a long shelf, then drilled the shelf with different size holes. This shelf is used to stack, hammers, screw drivers etc. As my dad used to say, there’s a place for everything and everything should be in its place.
