When my BFF's mum died, I spent Christmas at her place. We basically made Christmas Day an open invite to people who were "orphans and strays." We did this from the early '90s until Hurricane Sandy destroyed her place. Sometimes we had just one family, and sometimes up to about 15 people. After Sandy, we just never got back to it. I think the pressure for a lot of people who are struggling is massive, so be kind to each other, please.
14' inflatable Santa and then added a 20' Snowman. They are huge. Lol..Snowman towers over my house. If I turn it a quarter turn left, it'll be looking in the neighbors 2nd story window. 😂😂
@@GreatBigStory my grandmother used to do this and she said all the neighbors would do this as well back in the 20’s-40’s- I recon it probably wasn’t very safe but it looked amazing. She would put those large outdoor lights on her front pine tree. Then she would spray water on it every night and the water would freeze over the lights. She added water 💦 on it every night until it became a solid ice sculpture that lit up. It’s weird that it would work but it did and it looked amazing.
@@GreatBigStory the most ‘outrageous’ thing I’ve done is gone caroling where I played my violin 🎻 with professional singers- we rode places on a horse drawn sleigh. It was memorable. 🎄
As a New Yorker, born and raised, and former Bay Ridge resident, this is one of the things I miss most after having to leave to another state 😢 So happy that Great Big Story covered this.
@@yawenliu6648 I'm not sure which house you're speaking about. Dyker Heights runs along Dyker Heights Blvd, from 83rd to 86th St. Bay Ridge is an area by the Belt Pkwy and Verazzano Bridge.
I LOVE this! There is literally only ONE house like this over here where I am in the UK and its miles from where I am but we still travel to see it. Love it, what a commitment! And so awesome to see how much the community love it too. - Happy Christmas! xx
Did you notice how much he spends each year on buying decorations? Remember, he said he didn’t keep or store the decorations, so he buys new each year, and then gives away everything to people who can’t afford them. If he can afford that much when he’s retired, then he’s really got money.
I live in Dyker, I LOVE IT!!! whats Christmas with out lights and the Christmas spirit!!! Plus the little kids love it, and thats what its all about!!!
Just drove by last week. My toddler went wild and it was so packed on the streets! We will come back during weekday for a walk. Hopefully it will be more quiet
Love this! I watch some nyc creators on here walk through the streets in Dyker Heights and it’s always nice to see the different lights. Always wandered what the owners were like.
I am one of the very few people who live on my street that decorate the outside of my house each and every year. But nothing as extreme as what these people do. I'm not judging, but I'm not a big fan of fill the entire front yard full of various Christmas decorations and mixed match lights. Those that chose to decorate their homes like that doesn't bother me because nowadays it seems like less and less people even bother to decorate the outside for Christmas with just simple Christmas lights. So now when I notice any home or apartment with any sign of Christmas decorations, I appreciate seeing them. The thing I miss seeing the most are homes with the big picture windows in front and display their Christmas trees for everyone passing by to admire. A lot of the new houses being built today no longer have picture windows to do that anymore. So whenever I do see a home that has a picture window and actually has a Christmas tree displayed, it's so nice to see.
Thank you for bringing families together and letting them enjoy Christmas spirit through these beautiful decorations,is good to know the stories of the home owners,My condolences Mrs Lucy
Not a bad video. The residents talked a lot, as expected and wanted, and the narator was calm and didn't talk a lot (and when she did, she had a smooth voice). Only the topic feels a bit off, and the consumerism really pains me, but I admit it is a big story, and it is unique. Good job, overall.
I love christmas lights when they're done tastefully, but so many of these houses just throw EVERYTHING they can onto their front lawn, no planning, no rhyme or reason, just fill up as much space as possible. Quantity =/= quality
It takes the rest of the year to pay off the light bill. 😂 Gorgeous decorations and reminds me of childhood and the wonderment we felt driving around looking at the lights. The one thing I'd be doing is get a holiday vendor license and sell hot chocolate and holiday treats in my driveway. 😂
I recall in the early 90's driving down various blocks with my parents to see people's house decorated in Brooklyn and what stood out was two houses in Dyker Heights. The house with the tons of decorations and lights featured here and across the street a large house with GIANT Nutcrackers. Back then it was a local secret but in time as more houses got decorated the tour busses came and so did venders. It now just too busy to drive down like before unless you do it the days before December possibly. Happy to discover the story behind it all and the people. Wish I knew the story of the person who did the Giant Nutcrackers as that house that was part of the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights origins no longer decorates so possibly the person that set them up passed away.
I’m having a really rough year losing 2 close friends so we just put our tree up with the lights it has- I usually go all out but that’s all I could muster - I must say, it’s quite simplistically pretty. Not a bad thing like the one family does.
I THINK IT'S GLORIOUS!!!!!!! God Bless you, I wish I could be your neighbor, GO AMERICA 🇺🇸!, and a truly MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎅 TO ALL!!!!!! Jeff the Gringoman of Cypress Hills Brooklyn ❤.
Carroll Gardens was like this at christmas until all the Italians started selling their family brownstones in the mid-90s. Nobody 'flocked' to see it bcs New York was still New York.
This is so stupid. These people likely have little, to no savings. Certainly no retirement. Exhausting themselves to impress a bunch of strangers on the street. So sad.
What's the MOST Christmassy thing you've ever done? How Christmas obsessed are you?🎄👀 1,2,3...GO 👇

lucy’s old fashioned New York accent is so brooklyn
“Old fashioned New York accent” 💀
So true I met a Uber driver that moved out and had same accent
I asked him and told me the story 😊
What’s an “old fashioned Brooklyn accent”. I’m from Brooklyn, born in 1948. Her accent is a normal Brookkynite accent.
I love her
I go every year. Its literally amazing. Nothing like it. All the houses in Dyker Heights are different and so are the light displays.
As a New Yorker, born and raised, and former Bay Ridge resident, this is one of the things I miss most after having to leave to another state 😢 So happy that Great Big Story covered this.
May I know what street and ave that house is on? I am close to Dyker Heights, but didn’t know the Bay Ridge house

"We are minimalists" has entire house lit up like Waco.

For themselves - no. They said they do it for the kids and visitors.
“Like Waco”-- Brutal, lol

Competitive Christmas decorating is such a New York thing 🤣
Tour guides enthusiastic "Anybody want a photo with this house" made me chuckle
I'm glad people in Brooklyn are having fun and enjoying the holidays by decorating their front porch. Good for them! 🥰👍🏽

i grew up seeing these lights every Christmas & it's still one of my favorite traditions ❤️🎄🤶🏻

Different time... 😑

Bought my house at 25
@vvalasek with an inheritance...?
I LOVE that people do these outrageous things- I would love it so much if these people were my neighbors!
4:56 "we are minimalists" she says with a full wall cherub mural, complete with glitter behind her 😂😂

I remember that I called them dancing dolls…they had a box for donations because his wife passed away.
I wish I bought a house in Bay Ridge in ‘89. Smart. Great video
All I can think about is their electricity bill.

You all are awesome!!!! 👏 😎😎😎🎄🎄🎄NYC loves you!
That XMas tree that rotates is really nice!
Are you gonna do about the famous Christmas pink house in the Bronx next?
👀✍️
Oh yes that’s an interesting house!
LOVE it!! ❤😅 GO guys! 👏🙌👍🎉 Merry Christmas 👋

Christmassy GBS Nice
🎄❄️🎁🏘️🏘️🎁❄️🎄
Where do they store it all?!?
I thought the same. Perhaps storage units. The one man said he doesn't store any of it - he keeps a few pieces and donates the rest!
The minimalist house is my favourite from the outside. Inside the house is cold
Go Bigger ❤
The “minimalists” have terrible taste but they’re happy so I am happy for them
😂😂
LOVED this episode. They are so New Yorker Brooklyn lol
