  • In the summer of 2015, Brittany Symonds was playing softball when her left leg snapped. An X-ray revealed a mass and she was diagnosed with a rare form of sarcoma. Doctors initially inserted a rod to replace her femur and did a knee replacement. But in 2018, she shattered her kneecap. Over the next year and a half, she underwent nine surgeries to attempt to salvage her leg which was severely damaged from radiation. In July 2019, Brittany made the decision to have her leg amputated. Since her surgery, she’s joined a crossfit gym that works with adaptive athletes. The Tampa Bay Rays honored Brittany at the June 25th game at Tropicana Field through the Salute to Survivors Program presented by Moffitt Cancer Center.
