  • Synology SRM 1.3 firewall rules overview video that has been long overdue on my part. In this video we will go over and understand Synology's way of doing firewall rules in SRM 1.3.
In this Synology SRM 1.3 firewall rules overview i am going to go over the mechanism and the design language Synology has implemented to try to understand how to create firewall rules that suits your needs. I am going to create firewall rules in this demo but obviously you guys do not need to follow them one for one.
Towards the end of this Synology SRM 1.3 firewall rules overview video i am also going to show how to create geo ip based filtering rules and those are completely optional as long as the default WAN to SRM rule has not been changed from Deny to Allow.
Also, at least for me, i would create these geo ip based filtering rules anyway since i like having as much control as possible. if i have a firewall rule in front of me, then i am more in control. i can see the hits and if i need to, i can change the rule to Allow and not Deny.
Overall, Synology has remained very consistent in their design language not just here in SRM firewall section but throughout their entire product lines. everything is very familiar and if you understand Synology's design language, you will have no problem understanding their way of doing firewall rules in SRM 1.3. This Synology SRM 1.3 firewall rules overview video is trying to show exactly that.
This Synology SRM 1.3 firewall rules overview video was shot on the Synology RT2600ac, but it will look exactly the same on the RT6600ax which run the exact same SRM 1.3 operating system.

Outstanding video Avi! Very well presented, detailed, yet easy to follow. I love Synology’s implementation of firewall rules. Very straight forward and simple to setup. I wish more vendors would follow this simple format and be less cryptic. I do agree with you the ability to create firewall groups would be a welcome addition to SRM. Thanks again for the great content!

@@TechMeOut5 hey Avi, so here’s the deal with doing a Part 2 follow up to the wiring video. We don’t go back to install the gear until construction is complete and the homeowner takes possession of the home. This could be anywhere from 6-8 months, maybe longer, from the time we did the pre-wire. While I would love to do a follow up, it’s predicated on whether or not the owner will grant permission to film in their home. Only time will tell.

Really well done video. What rules would you have if you had no VLANs on a small home network with a couple of NAS's ? By analyzing what you did here, I've just put in a few Geo blocks following yours. And you're right; I'm watching the hit count increase before my eyes. So for the score is : Russia 31, China 6, Iran 0, North Korea 0. All in about 15 minutes.
