UniFi Zone-Based Firewall: The Update That Changes Everything!
UniFi Zone-Based Firewall: The Update That Changes Everything! Discover the UniFi Zone-Based Firewall: A Game-Changing Feature for Your Network!
In this video, we take an in-depth look at the revolutionary UniFi Zone-Based Firewall, introduced in the UniFi Network Application version 9.0. The UniFi Zone-Based Firewall is a milestone feature that replaces traditional firewall rules with an advanced system that categorizes your network into zones. This breakthrough makes policy management more intuitive, granular, and powerful than ever before.
We’ll begin by explaining what the UniFi Zone-Based Firewall is and how it works. You’ll learn why the UniFi Zone-Based Firewall is a huge improvement over the classic rule-based approach and why it’s considered an enterprise-level feature now available for UniFi users.
Next, we’ll guide you step-by-step on how to configure the UniFi Zone-Based Firewall on your UniFi Gateway. From creating zones to setting up policies and testing the system, you’ll see how the UniFi Zone-Based Firewall simplifies network management while enhancing security and flexibility.
By the end of this video, you’ll have a complete understanding of the UniFi Zone-Based Firewall and how to use it to take control of your network like never before. If you’re a UniFi console user, mastering the UniFi Zone-Based Firewall is a must to unlock its full potential.
The new UniFi Zone-Based Firewall is defiently a step in the right direction from Ubiquiti as it makes another step in making the UniFi lineup more and more enterprise ready. We have seen Ubiquiti making steps in this direction even in new hardware directed at large scale networks and this new UniFi Zone-Based Firewall is a part of this strategy.
Overall, the UniFi Zone-Based Firewall is working very well and it does achieve its goal in making network management easier, simpler, having to need less rules in order to make networks behave the way we want them. The UniFi Zone-Based Firewall will probably the new default in all UniFi consoles and for a good reason.
Stay tuned, and let’s dive into the future of UniFi networking with the UniFi Zone-Based Firewall!

Home Assistant and Cloudflare Dynamic DNS (DDNS)

Home Assistant and Cloudflare Dynamic DNS is actually the easiest way to get a real DDNS configured if you are already using Home Assistant and if you already have a domain managed in Cloudflare. I said it several times in past, if you are using DDNS today in order to facilitate remote access via port forwarding, i strongly advise against it. port forwarding is a bad idea. This video is very bad and looks a lot like clickbate. ZemiSmart DOES NOT connect to Home Assistant! Please do not say so in your video. So yes nice device but NO software home automation in an easy way. Tuya App is considered to be very bad for users!
Excellent videos and easy to follow. Keep it up. I have a question though; if i would like to install the same smart relay which wire would go where considering that i have 3 sets of common, neutral and switch lives behind my light switch? (Its a two way light)
Has anyone figured out how to change the default rule between to zones? e.g.: VPN to Internal is "Allow All" and there is no option to change that default rule to "Block All". The only way to make that happen is to create an additional rule, which results in a quite comic Block and Allow rule in the overview. Unfornately it also bypasses the overview matrix: it doesn't show "Block all", it shows "See policies". For me, it makes the overview matrix somewhat useless.
Thank you. Well done!
Thanks for the great video. You actually use an example use-case scenario to make things easier to understand. One thing I've always had trouble understanding is the inter-vlan communications such as clients to printers, or client to say door bell camera. Your video not only showed me how to use the zones, but also helped me to solve this issue. Thank you!
Glas i was able to help
Thank you for your instruction video. I have one question. Is it correct, that you just connected the ZBMINIR2 to one neutral wire (propably the one from the source) and did not connect the other neutral wire (propably to the light)?
Hi, i have just bought a Unifi Express i want to use it as an access point but have no dream machine or anything like that. I do have a unifi network server on my pc. can i still use it as an access point that way?
Hi, how to add another volume of NAS? i want to add two volume of NAS, i just create two nas on PBS and proxmox but from volume number 2 (10TB) of NAS can't connect. the system still read all datastore from volume number 1 (4TB). Datastore name NAS-1(4TB) and NAS-2(10TB).. thank you
Been using this for a little over a week with the RC update and it's awesome! Great video, Avi! Loved seeing another point of view on it.
Thank you so much! I am glad that you are enjoying the new features and thanks for watching buddy
can you make a video about dns shield. i see nobody using it
Its great for basic secure DNS..i used to use it but now use NextDNS DNS provider so needs to be disabled. Only reason i use the provider is so i have more granular control over my traffic coming in.
Not using dark mode should be a crime 😂
Welcome to the 20th century Ubiquiti with the ZoneBased firewalling! 🙂
It seems that this feature is not available on all UCG or UXG/UCK models. Are you aware of any specific limitations regarding this?
Certain devices have a different cadence. Im pretty sure that this will be available on all platforms and sooner than later it will become the new default
Could you make a video explain how pihole or adguard work in unifi?
Hi. To be honest, I'm failing to understand the question. Adguard and pihole are applications that filter dns queries. What's the connection to unifi?
Glad Unifi has finally added this feature. Well delivered and easy to understand Avi.
Thanks for watching Tony! I hope you are doing well.
Hmm the rules you created for blocking traffic were completely unnecessary since the block all rule already take care of what you wanted to accomplish. On the other hand you created them as a demo on how to create rules without changing anything, that is what you did. It seems like the block all rule is automatically created when you create the zone.
Hi. The main focus was the rule creation and how to use the matrix to help administer them. That was the main goal.
It looks like the ability to turn rules on and off (for testing or temporarily changing a restriction) is missing. Can you confirm this? If missing, seems like an oversight on Ubiquiti's part.
It’s not missing, it is present in the zone based firewall
You can see the pause feature if you click manage and then tick the rule you want to alter state on
@@driver288 Great! Thank you.
@@marksamuels6293 Excellent. Thank you.
Great explanation. Thanks!
Great video. Can’t wait for this to be out of the beta phase. I don’t know about the USW issue, but ubiquiti is making some amazing moves as of the last year. I’m sure they’ll get this feature fixed for use with the USW.
Thanks for making the video - ZBF is awesome as long as all the VLANs are managed by the UDM. The moment you are using VLAN's routed by a Unifi L3 switch they are just thrown into the 'External' zone and there is no way to add them to a zone at all ...
This is a self-inflicted problem. If you're using UniFi L3 switches to route VLANs instead of the UDM, you're deliberately bypassing your security appliance. Of course those VLANs show up as "External" - from the UDM's perspective, that traffic isn't under its control anymore. Unless you can clearly articulate why you need L3 switching (with actual throughput numbers to back it up), you're likely overcomplicating your network and compromising your security posture for no real benefit. Let your gateway be a gateway and your switches be switches.
@@whiskerjones9662 Without going into all the details, simply a case of having a lot of 25Gb connected devices in my setup (30+). By having the UDM manage the VLAN routing vs my Aggregation Pro's, unless I put all 25Gb devices on the same VLAN, the inter vlan route will force all traffic up the 10Gb UDM pipe to be routed even between VLAN's on the same Agg pro, which would slam the UDM.
here in 2024 because i was stuck on the WAN/LAN. Thank you so much!!
Cheers mate
Is Proxmox running now behind PFsense VM?
Logically...yes
@@TechMeOut5 Then its best to run PfSense on Proxmox boot. 😀
Thx!!!!! !!!! !!! :)
Welcome!
Fantastic tutorial, but without any error - all backups from VE go directly to PBS, not to NAS, so that 32GB get full quickly. Any advice where to find mistake?
Hi. If you saw the whole video...you would notice that i mapped an nfs folder to thr pbs virtual machine so that the backup data goes into the mapped folder that actually located on the synology nas...that is actually almost the whole point of this video
@@TechMeOut5 I tried to follow exactly the same, i wxpect problem in mapping drive, but have no clue where is mistake. sorry for bothering
as a properties of subfolders I see: /volume2/Backup/Backup/PBS
I mapped in PVE the PBS, but inside PBS I have probably wrong way mapped NAS subfolder, so nothing goes into NAS, but into the PBS. Can I contact You directly, if You agree?
@@TechMeOut5 i tried 8 times, no error, all backups work - but problem is that I keep space 32gigs only, nothing is store on NAS but on VM. I am frustrated - have no clue where is my mistake, sorry
I really appreciate your efforts! A bit off-topic, but I wanted to ask: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
Just upgraded two of my drives over the holidays and this video helped explain a few of the steps that Synology's website isn't giving enough context to, so I really appreciate your tutorial. Thanks!
Love these smart home videos, Avi! Great as usual!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it! Have a great weekend Frank
Do unifi cameras support onvif?

You forgot about US-8-150W
Right!
I have decided to separate my IOT devices from the rest of my network and have been kicking myself in the head trying to figure VLANs out. This video is a great help! I have learned more while drinking my first cup of coffee this morning than I have the last couple of days. Thank You!!

@TechMeOut5 Thanks you, and I did. 😀
I wonder what the heat displacement is like for such a small device ... especially when pumping more than 60 watts and running a bit of POE.
Thank you very much for this - worked first time!
Loved the video, Avi. Never realized this switch could power 200W+ with the correct power adapter - that is crazy!
Yup! Its a very capable switch this little fella. Thanks for watching Frank.
I cannot import OVF file even though the documentation claims I can import an OVF file.
Amazing video , can you please do a video for how to optimize the WiFi coverage ? thanks in advance !Keep it up !
Thanks for watching. Will add this topic to my to do list
I don't have a switch im using VirtualBox as a hypervisor and installed PfSense on it and other VMs and want to separate them using Vlans how to achieve this if they are all installed in VBox? I cannot figure out the Network Settings in Vbox for all the vm and the firewall
Thanks for this video. I was looking for exactly the point with the service action.
This was EXACTLY what I needed. I'm relatively new to UniFi, I'd started off with just a UniFi express. This weekend I added a Dream Machine Pro, with a plan to turn my UniFi Express into an Access Point, but I simply couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do. I can't thank you enough!
Wow! So glad I found this! More people need to know about this capability. Your instructions were very clear and worked perfectly. Thanks!
Thank you very much! Please feel free to share this video on social media
why is my Volume missing the "Modify Size' option??
Good Video! The following comment is aimed at home users (like me!), for whom upgrading an entire NAS-Full of drives may be too expensive to do in one hit, so they look to take advantage of SHR's ability to handle different sized drives and plan to upgrade over the course of several months, as funds allow. This is a clarification of Avi's point about SHR allowing only expansion after half of the drives in his 4-Bay unit were replaced: When the first drive is replaced (with a larger drive) you will NOT see any increase in available space. This is due to the way SHR works - the parity drive will only contain data equivalent to the largest drive in the active volume, any additional space will be unused. So for example in a 4-Bay unit with 4 x 4TB drives - the available space will be 3 x 4 = 12TB with the other 4TB drive used for parity. If you replace one of the drives with a 10TB drive, you WILL NOT see the extra 6TB. This is because SHR will use the new 10TB drive for parity to hold a 4TB parity image - because it cannot hold a 10TB image on a 4TB drive - Only when one of the remaining 4TB drives is replaced (with another 10TB drive) will the "missing" 6TBs become available - SHR will now be able to use one of the 10TB drives for parity and be able to hold an image of largest drive (the other 10TB unit) in the active volume. As I noted above, for Home users upgrading one drive at a time, they have to look at the first drive replacement as an "investment" - or they budget for 2 drives in the initial upgrade.
I have a question. I recently had a Windows Update erase my data and set my machine back to 2018. I could recover individual files and folders from my NAS without issues. However I tried to recover the ‘Entire Device’ and set it to recover the latest backup, while it completed and said it finished successfully, it actually did nothing at all. The machine was exactly was it was after the crash, still with files and updates from 2018. Now I could not find my Recovery Media USB because they were created several years ago and I had even forgotten about their existence. So I was effectively creating one after the crash. I suspect this was the problem, but I have questions. Is that fact I had misplaced the USB Recovery Media and only created a new one after the crash the reason why my bare metal restore failed to recover to my latest backup? Is there any work around if this situation happens again or do you just have to reinstall all programs and download your data manually?
I read somewhere that VSS (Volume Shadow copy service) needs to be enabled on windows in order for incremental backup to work correctly. Do you know if this is right or is it something from the past that isn't relevant anymore? PS great video!
Thanks!
Thanks this is almost all the information I wanted to confirm. The only thing I wanted to hear someone with experience tell me is if it is true that when doing this upgrade to higher capacity drives, do the newer, higher capacity drives have to have the same RPM as the older, lower capacity drives? For example, my RAID 1 has 2 4TB drives with 5400RPM and I wanted to upgrade to 2 12TB drives with 7200RPM. So do I need to get 5400RPM drives instead or is it possible to make this migration? My file system is btrfs, in case it matters. Thanks!
Our company just did this. 45Drives provided the servers
Great video! I could really use some help with some direction/advice... 1. I have a 6-bay NAS in RAID10/BTRFS. 2. I just added a 5 bay expansion chassis and 2 new 18TB drives, identical to the main NAS drives. 3. In storage > Volume 1 I am only seeing the option to replace a drive, but not add a drive 4. Everything is healthy, however I'm getting a low space warning. (Down to 10% remaining capacity) Is RAID10 configuration not able to expand? I'd much prefer expanding the current storage pool vs adding a new one, and having to change my file structures and shares. I'd be grateful for any advice!
