  • Synology Hyper Backup New Feature i just stumbled upon that might indicate a whole new direction Synology might be taking from this point forward when it comes to backing up your entire NAS.
    Synology Hyper Backup in itself is one of the most fundamental, most mainstream app for almost every Synology NAS user wanting to backup data from the NAS to another repository, be it another Synology NAS or even a cloud based platform like Google Drive or Synology C2.
    In a new version of the Synology Hyper Backup app, a new feature was introduced, in which we see an indication for a whole new direction Synology might be taking here. This becomes even more intriguing since not too long a ago, a similar capability was introduced in Synology Active Backup for Business.
    At this point in time, this Synology Hyper Backup New Feature is still in beta but it seems like this feature is going to be coming to almost all Synology business class devices and upwards. the J series devices might not be getting this new feature but its too early to tell.
    In this video i am just going to quickly show this new Synology Hyper Backup New Feature, but i would really like to know what do you guys think about this new direction, are you going to be using it? what do you guys think?

    Loved the video! This is going to really open up backup options since the ABB "entire NAS" option requires another Synology NAS. Didn't even know this was coming so thanks for sharing!

      It is very confusing for a home user that several backup packages are overlapping. For example Hyperbackup "entire system" and ABFB "NAS". Perhaps idea for a future video Wundertech? :)

    Thanks for sharing this information Avi. I hadn’t stumbled across this new feature in 7.2 until I saw your vid. I’ve had good success with Synology NAS Bare Metal Restore using ABB. Curious to see where they take this. I’m guessing with Hyper Backup one will have the option of multiple backup destinations. For example having a full backup to an offsite NAS, then a second backup task to send the full backup out to C2 as well. Anyway, great job, thanks again for sharing. Have a great day.

      You raise a great point, i haven't thought of that! Thanks for watching Tony!

      @@TechMeOut5 so the current Beta only gives the option of backing up to another Synology NAS, C2 is not an option at this point. Again, I would have to think that future version will support C2. I guess we’ll just have to stay tuned.

    I would certainly use this feature. What makes it useless right now is that this feature is ONLY available when backing up to another nas. This is ridiculous considering there are a lot of people who don't have several nas and really shouldn't be forced to use it this way. there is no reason why it shouldn't allow to backup to a usb drive. I really hope synology enable this and SOON!

    Awesome feature. Thank you for sharing. Btw, if I understand it correctly you are initiating the Hyper Backup from one NAS and backing up another NAS; right?

      @TechMeOut5  Рік тому

      Yep. Preferably in an offsite location. C2 might be also supported in the future...still to early to tell

      @@TechMeOut5 these new features were included in a Newsletter from Synology few days ago; I missed it

    I just realized that Synology has disabled this feature for older Synology NAS models. It is not possible to upgrade to a version of Hyperbackup that supports this feature of "entire" backup.. :( Should have checked before I erased my backups.

    Once you find out, Please let us know what are the differences between ABB and hyper backup.

    Hello,
    Can I save my entire nas with ext4 file system and restore it on a different file system (brtfs)?
    Thanks a lot for your answer

    Curious whether this could be used for migration - for example, if I am replacing a DS918+ with a DS720+. Could I do the "entire" backup of the DS918+, and then restore from that backup to the DS720+? And what if the DS918+ is using the EXT file system, but I want the DS720+ to use BTRFS? Will it still work?

      I'm saying this with as much caution as i can...i havent tested it and this feature isnt finalized yet...but i dont see why not, i think this might be one of the use cases of this feature

    Maybe the difference is in reducing the storage footprint needed. Active Backup uses compression while Hyper Backup uses a De-Duplication at file level. Maybe De-Duplication is more effiecient. Just initial thoughts.

      @TechMeOut5  Рік тому

      Yep...that might be also a factor

    Very interesting. Unfortunate that you can't back up to an external USB.

    Can I use this option to migrate to full volume encryption? 1. Backup data 2. Reset NAS 3. Create full encrypted volume 4. Restore backup.

    I'm currently backing up my NAS using Hyper, it's taking ages to do 1.4TB. After 3 days I'm only 300GB in, so it'll take a fortnight to complete! Yikes!
