One business thing I recall about the Short North during the 1980s is several second hand furniture stores located along High St. Not antique but functional used furniture. They catered to the university students as well as the neighborhood's somewhat transient renter population.
Not sure if that's how'd you'd meant it, but the Garden wasn't referred to as the 'Burlesque Building'. The "Burlesque" signage was just referring to the rather shady exotic dancing held there - burlesque was a very euphemistic description of what went on, to put it mildly. If I remember correctly, they were shut down for prostitution. Anyway, that little corner area at 5th and High was generally referred to as the Garden District.
Over prescription medication from Osu helped them buy out the whole north end- and destroyed our campus - killed the skyline- with huge buildings and no parking spaces like they promised
I think it just had some struggling storefronts, the kind that hang out for a year or two, then another takes its place. I could be wrong on that, though, so if anybody knows for sure... There's a Cameron Mitchell restaurant - Marcella's - in there now. I can't find much info about the building's history, other than being built in 1889 and rebuilt/renovated in 1929, which is a pity. Bet it's got quite the history.
Functional Furnishings was there for quite some time. Kind of like an Ikea before there was an Ikea here. Not sure how much of the ground floor they occupied but it was a good sized store with two stories, I believe. Looks like it was in it's final days when the pic was taken@@DavidMacLuna
Functional Furnishings. Loved that store.

Dave Lucas is my FIL. I'll show him this video, I think he'll love it.
I had friends who lived in the Short Nirth Tavern building then. Neat apartments and layouts. I twice pet sat for them. I saw why they loved the area.

Does anyone know how the Yukon Building got its name? I mean, it's north of downtown but not that far north. 😁
What was the yukon building
