@Lydia Roselli I disagree. Just because it wasn't written in the Bible doesn't mean this didn't happen or couldn't have happened. No one knows 100% what Jesus' every action was. Movies are interpretation sure...but whats important in this scene is the meaning- how he speaks, the language involved and his fondness and respect for John. This is how I feel anyway. God bless.
I have read comments where it is pointed out that this event is not found in the Bible. True. But I believe the creators of this flim were aiming at portraying a wonderful truth; that regardless of circumstances, Christ can visit and free each of us in whatever prison we may find ourselves. Be it the prison of sin ,of drugs, of despair.
We believers tend to miss that he was human, besides being God, and surely he cried for the dead of his cousin , and his adoptive father Joseph just as much for his friend Lazarus
Bruce Marchiano had waaaaaaay more personality than Mr. Hunter in the role as Jesus. As a kid Hunter as Jesus kinda frightened me a bit. He never smiled.
Robert powell was the ultimate Jesus portrayal, his portrayal was so realistic that many churches around the world have his image in paintings, And Robert Powell didn't like that. Look it up.
This is a brillantly written and acted scene. John is all of us, broken and defeated, and Jesus cuts through all the evil done unto John by saying, "blessed is he who keeps his faith" and puts the sin of mankind in its place, to be judged by Our Redeemer
This scene is very powerful. There are indeed many people on earth who are free to go anywhere they desire. But yet their souls are in a prison cell. They are a prisoner of their deeds. They are prisoners of the Devil's deception. John may be confined to a prison cell. But he was a free man. His soul was free.
Not at all... the position of the christ figure on a high level represents the heavenly metaphor.. h John climbs up from a dark place (like we all so at times) to grasp the Holy hand of christ... the look of compassion and love in jesus is palpable... remarkable... John is utterly shocked at the visit of jesus to his cell... but is desperate in his eyes and vocal tones. He takes the hand of jesus and falls again (like we tend to do) but christ still stands there watching us xxx happy easter weekend
I love this scene! I like how Jesus remembers the soldier, Lucius, visiting Him and His mother. How He visits John the Baptist in prison--shows how loving our Lord is.

I know I'm late to the party on this but Lucius although they don't mention it by name according to the filmmakers is supposed to be a very young Lucius of Cyrene founder of the Christian church in Antioch. It's hinted over the course of the movie of his slow conversion. It's completely made up obviously and it's more for artistic reasons and not historically or biblically accurate but it's a nice little nod of how sometimes we may be connected to people and we don't even know it.
This is my favorite scene in the movie. I like to think that we are John, deep in the dark pit with the chains of sin around us. And when we see Jesus simply say our name, we scramble up not to ask to be freed, but simply to ask for His blessing to continue.
+kobehal Amen to that. There was not a single film on TV celebrating the life of Christ at Christmas and this one was the only one shown at Easter .Absolutely shameful and cowardly by the TV people . Luckily the miniseries Jesus of Nazereth is complete on you tube.
even if they show Ben-Hur on Easter, that's a really Christlike movie, both the old one and the new one (I love them both :) I hope that both of these are shown.
I admire that Ron Randell's Lucius portrays the worst and best in Man. Ron's portrayal has been indelible since the early '60s when first my Dad took me to see King of Kings. In this Easter season and during Holy Week itself seeing this film again (for better or worse) recalls those principles instilled within me by my loving parents, the good sisters of my school and all under the auspices of our Savior, Jesus Christ and Almighty God, the Father. If it takes a (well done) movie to jog or prod my faith, then so be it; I too have failings. During the last months of my Dad's life we watched King of Kings in the comfort of his living room and both of us were crying as Jesus recited, representing the first time it had ever been uttered, The Lord's Prayer. That I have this treasured memory is considered by me a gift from God Himself.
I've seen the movie lots and lots of times and I'll never get tired of watching it its my favorite movie of all time ...and my father saw this movie in a drive in movie theater back in 1961 when it first came out my dad was 6 years old
I like how in this scene one of the guards said he don't know how to send this one away, not a typical Roman soldier reply or response at all!!, if its one thing Roman soldiers knew how to do, is apply force to anyone to send them away, especially a Jew in Judiah (sp?) at that time, they had no qualms enforcing their might on someone physically. I have a feeling that until the time had come for Him to meet His destiny on why He first came to Earth, no one could harm Him, physically or mentally. I'm thinking in general of His time on Earth in His first coming, as I don't think this scene was in the Bible, but I like it just the same, I always when watching this film had this thought in my head when watching this scene.
This is my opinion, but I believe Robert Ryan's portrayal of John the Baptist is the best out of all the portrayals of John the Baptist in cinema. This character was out of the realm of Ryan's characters from the past as Ryan portrayed mostly villains. In this movie, Robert Ryan created this sympathetic, wise man. Witnessing Ryan play John the Baptist, I still see the grit and toughness in other film characters that Ryan acted, for instance The Naked Spur, The Wild Bunch, etc. Robert Ryan, incredible actor. Truly one of the best in cinema history.
Pilot said to Jesus. " And just how do you propose to break him free from his cell ? Jesus replied. " I come to free him within his cell. " The HOLLY SPIRIT ! John wasn't afraid to die. Because when Jesus held his hand he felt the power of Jesus blessing. John knew that soon he will be in Heaven sitting on the right hand side of GOD !
That's Lucius, a character that does not appear in the Bible, not Pilate. It's spelled Pilate, not Pilot. Great movie, though. Also, there were Roman soldiers who came to faith in Christ. One was the Centurion that came and asked Christ to heal his servant. The other is the soldier at the crucifixion who said, "Truly this man was the Son of God." There's also a Roman family that was baptized in Acts.
It reminds me of my dad who passed away 6 years ago. We always watched this as I was growing up. And it reminded him of his mother who passed when he was just 11 because she took him to see it in the theater when in came out. Amazing movie.
This scene is a perfect example of how sin (the bars) separates us from God, yet the Son of God reaches through the bars to offer the gift of eternal life for those who would seek it. Simply extend your hand and ask God for the gift His Son gives.

Tal vez,se me ocurre , Él sigue hablando al mundo.
I am of the opinion that it isn't totally Christianity or belief in Christ that makes this scene so powerful, though it does resonate with the essential spirit of the religion. It's as though an ancient instinct (older than Roman times or ancient Chinese civilization) tells us that with something within us to hold on to, to believe in and to celebrate inside our souls we can endure incarceration, abuse, contempt from those in power who, in essence, are their own jailers. They lock themselves into their own cells by ridiculing the immense power of compassion and the "life of the interior," separate from the vicissitudes of mortal, fallible life.
I agree. With you.totally.they should show more religious movies! Not the stuff they show now. It is a shame. People forgwt bout jesus.they only pray to him when they want somethin.n not pray everyday.
Jeffrey Hunter and Jim Cavaziel are the two best actors who EVER played the part of The Lord Jesus Christ on film. I especially liked the way that Jeffrey Hunter portrayed Jesus. His beautiful blue eyes just penetrate your soul, and make you want to cry. Maybe that’s not exactly what Jesus looked like, but I’m sure he was very handsome. Based on the Biblical account of Jesus, and based on his ethnic background, I believe that Jesus probably had a dark complexion and beautiful brown eyes and skin. ❤❤😊😊
There is a connexion here. Jeffrey Hunter played Christopher Pike in 1964 the cage and Robert Ryan wanted to play commodore decker in the doomsday machine 1967 but didn't do it.
Jesus👑comes to free John the Baptist within himself. John was going to get his head chopped off. A tragic and horrible death. Jesus👑freed John's the Baptist living soul so that he would not feel the head chopper's sword upon his neck.

The Jeffrey Hunter movie of King of Kings is a nice touch for the Bible story. But as for me, the 1979 Brian Deacon movie of Jesus was the Jesus movie I grew up watching and admired to this day. The Passion of the Christ was awesome with all its makeup and special effects but it was too brutal for my liking. The 1977 Robert Powell movie of Jesus of Nazareth had a powerful message.
In The Song of Solomon, the writer says that Jesus has locks like a Raven 🐦⬛, and Dove’s eyes. Fair are the meadows, and fairer still the woodlands robed in the blooming garb of Spring. Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer !! ❤❤

Still dont get it many after this virus killing and effected all over the world these days are not for being sleep .repent and give your heart to Lord and he will heal your broken heart and his blood will protect your from sickness. I use to like this movie when I was younger. But as I got older and studied the Word of The Most High, and the history of the notion of a white Jesus, it became clearer to me that this film, and ever other film of this nature , is both Biblically and historically inaccurate. I know some of you will not agree and that's ok. But truth is truth.
U got that right nobody can't play that role of jesus christ but Jeremy HUNTER. ❤❤❤❤

Now it's time world to know who is king of king and lord of Lord .He came to this world he was rejected but this time every knee will bow down and every tongue will confess he is Lord. Still dont get it many after this virus killing and effected all over the world these days are not for being sleep .repent and give your heart to Lord and he will heal your broken heart and his blood will protect your from sickness. His arms always wide open his father for fatherless .
Jesus Christ was white.
He’s was Mediterranean, not Arab or African
Why did John let go? Jesus had the strength to hold onto him longer than that.
The power of the Lord was too much for all of them.
