- On today's episode, Josh walks us through the rarest model of the coveted Klon Centaur. Join him as he explains its origins, its circuit modifications and demonstrates it on electric and bass guitar.
Great, now Klons are going to be expensive on Reverb.
Thanks a lot Josh!
Josh is definitely making a Centaur. The added bonus that makes it different will be a switch that toggles bass mode. 6 months ago Josh said he’d only do a Klone if he could offer a twist on what’s out there. And now he’s been spending time with a bass Klon. This is how the Bonsai started.
My money is on a new two-in-one coming. Josh has always said his "Secret Sauce" is a Morning Glory into a Centaur.
@@stevelloyd57 That would be a perfect combo. Klon to add a pseudo gain stage to the amp and then blues breaker to push that.
Man called his shot big time here lol
can't wait to see those popping for $1M on reverb
No sheet. Thanks Josh.
And as they should
@@JugaJuga14there is no possible reason for klons to cost that much
Well I bought one as for 5 and a half. Figured I might as well snag one before that sky rocket.
@@bigtsshackfestival9563 5 and half grand?
Jesus i couldnt justify buying a pedal for that
Come for the pedal talk, stay for the guitar playing. You've progressed so much as a guitarist since I started watching this channel.
I feel like he was a solid player from the start
I think his playing style evolve with him as a youtube - isn't just the playing by itself but its actually his showman skills what got my attention.
I'd be curious to hear what Addison thinks of it as a Klon-loving bassist. Personally, I'd buy one if you made a Blone!
TS9B, dude. So worth the cash
I absolutely loved the opening track! Great playing Josh!
Josh you killed on that opening track, really felt it! Must be in the zone today. Really played to strength of the gear being used.
I wish you’d start making Klon clones again, and add the bass mod.
I feel like this is a prelude to that happening quite soon
@@pulsemaps I really hope so!
Lol, you don't want to know the history on that one . . .
@@BlueBarrier782 If you mean Josh's encounter with Bill Finnegan long ago with his kind-of-sort-of cease and desist, and then everyone and their dog making klones for 20 years and Josh having a soul-seeking dilemma about the situation, then yes, I too am obsessed with the JHS show
The Acorn Amps Klone has the bass toggle switch. Josh demoed it last summer.
I’ve been using the EHX bass soul food for a while now and it’s my go to bass drive for whenever I need a little bit of grit. It works very well for me and the clean blend is so vital for getting a full sounding bass overdrive
From all the bass player/tinkerers, thanks for doing that Josh
Excellent playing, excellent pedal (make a copy!), and the most excellent album. I absolutely love Ambient 1; it is such an incredible record.
You're very talented, you have a really great Channel, Show, live Stream. I love long form conversation and guitars. Your focus is pedals but there's so much more useful chatter. Thanks
I really enjoyed hearing you talk about the audio signal as it goes through the device. Even if I don't fully understand the electronics, it helps me when I'm adjusting my chain. Thank you.
One came up for sale in Australia in 2010. That's the only reference I could find to an actual Centaur bass pedal.
I never expected to hear a credible indie-trap vibe on the JHS Show... and yet, there it was in the intro. Love the way you've embraced that drum machine.
agreed, and sweet sounding/looking guitar as well!
What is the drum machine again, I missed when he announced it.
Would also like to know what DM Josh uses.
@@mykhedelic6471 yeah I'm curious as well
damn josh i feel like your playing has improved over the years. great stuff
Great playing Josh.
😁Thank you for the Bass content , Josh .
Your knowledge, intellect and sense of humor or the main reasons I love your videos. You're like the David Letterman of gear reviewers.
Really interesting episode today. Never knew anything about a bass model. I liked the low gain setting but overall i don't think it was anything I couldn't achieve with something else. Going to listen later on a better setup at home rather than the PC here with the little plastic speakers. The Eno ambient albums were cool. He also did a couple with Fripp that I have. I really like his 70s albums like Another Green World that were an art rock/pop type of thing. I have all 4 of those albums. Eno also composed the Windows 95 startup sound.
Haha, I had to google the Win95 sound as I couldn't remember it, now i have flashback/nightmare operation system fear.
Just got my JHS modded Soul Food ... dang!! so happy and thanks to John for his input on my pedal chain. He has been very helpful and so cool to me. Hey ... I think you should do a monthly feature in which you weigh in on viewer pedal boards ... like 6 boards in every show ... and you should start with mine because John already has a picture of it.
GREAT playing on the opening track.
Sound's great. I'm really loving the archer it's perfect for what I'm doing.
More feeling in your hands every upload 👍 You should do an album with Josh Stone.
Tasty playing!
I play bass, and the first pedal that never left my board aside from my strobe tuner is the J. Rocket Audio Archer. I purchased a Caveman BP1C and even that could not dislodge the harmonic boost of the Archer. Wild. I’m sure the KLA and Klon might be better, but also similar enough.
That was a particularly tasty intro tune there, Josh
Love this kinda crisp and crunchy bass overdrive.
Make a video about Fuzz factory, we are missing this gems
I have a fuzz factory clone kit I need to get around to building.
I want to test multiple different PNP transistor pairs....
daunting task but with the promise of awesome
I just built a fuzz factory and no one is missing any-EEEEEEOOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHNNNNNNNNWEEEEEEEEEO0OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO0-sorry, sorry! *twists knobs furiously*
@@Killall12 🤨
Josh album is a need at this point
Hi Josh, Argie, an amp and pedal company from Argentina does clon of the Klon called Dolly, which has both the a classic Klon mode and a mode with more bass response that sounds really good as a pre-amp or booster for basses.
El Dolly es un un clon del Centaur? No tenía idea... Lo que sé es que Fourcade los fabrica a cuenta gotas. Un abrazo desde Argentina! 😜
John Mayer's spirit on this demo, great playing.
It’s all about track 1 for me. I’ve listened to Music for Airports thousands of times. My favourite album ever.
You play way better than Rhett Shull.
I like Rhett. Not that much but I do and can’t seem to find any guitar related video without a comment like this. Is it done meme or something bc I really don’t get it
Some not done sorry
Thought my ears were broken for a sec but I actually heard a difference during the lead lines much more than anywhere else.
What a sweet intro.
Love the explainer!
Big difference~ When JHS makes it's Multi-Horse, that bass version has to be one of the choices.
Reminder that EHX has the Bass Soul Food. Would have been interesting to see a comparison.
And EHX BSF “Blend” works wonders!
Nice guitar playing 👍🏽
Bass morning glory when?
This opening tune has maybe the best Josh I’ve heard. 🤌🏽
You have to pick Ambient 1 because you can’t have a Klon Centaur with Discreet Music. The opamp is an IC! 🥁
Yes, as soon as I started typing, I realized I couldn’t make a decent pun there. I’m sorry. I’m a nerd dad.
I heard Ambient 1 for the first time in late ‘94 or early ‘95. I spent my lawn mowing money on any Eno album I could find after that. His output from ‘75 to ‘83 was and is mind blowing to me. Gave me a different lens to view music through. Any time I travelled, I’d pour through local record stores for things I couldn’t find back home.
Pre-internet music, his name or Steve Albini’s in liner notes was enough for me to take a $16 gamble. They’re my Yin and Yang. Crazy how much music I bought before hearing a note. Now I can spend a month diving through Japanese math rock on Spotify without thinking about any “what if I picked something else”. I miss the feeling of flipping through records and CDs, the smell of musty cardboard, the weight of the decision, the ritual of it all for me… but I do love the instant gratification modern me gets.
The jam in the beginning is sick.
Does sound wonderful
I don’t hear darker/brighter, I hear exactly what it is - a lower frequency of hi pass filter on the bass klon. And it’s MAGNIFICENT. PLEASE make a Klone with these additional cap values on a top panel switch. 😫
Everyone's gonna go rip their Klons apart to test the caps now, good work Josh 😅
The stereo delay is awesome on headphones!
That guitar is so dope ❤🎉
I'm sorry to see that your guitar passed away Josh. It will always be with you.
Very cool, now make a version of this, please -- with balanced direct out, double please. And thank you.
Sounds just like the EHX soul food I have knocking around
With the JHS Meat & 3 Mod :P
Ya that's why one of my bass boards has the awesome $25 Wish silver centaur clone, I did have to add the 25mm Davies oxblood knobs for about $2.50 ea to nail the Klon look, great pedal😁
You need to show off that totally clear guitar in the back!
Amazing record time. I used to fall asleep to that album.
Yup-yup-yup you fellas are nuts
love the post office lobby music in the intro
Nice opening jam hombre...
The EHX Deluxe Bass Muff has a “Crossover” foot-switch that adds two knobs in for HPF and a LPF. Really can alter the output significantly.
It's the pedal I settled on for my first fuzz. That crossover section was one of the main reasons I got it, though I have to say - the filters have an obscenely high Q.
If you move it around it sounds like a wah, which mean you are forced to boost a certain frequency to get the cutoff which can massively increase volumes on certain notes.
As such I am looking forward to opening it up in the future and modding in a toggle Q for both filters (so you can choose between high and low Q values).
Got some more plans to soup it up as well...
Other than that it is a monster fuzz, I love it on guitar also.
@@nram3930 the history of wah goes back to a Vox amp, a tech was playing with the mids knob, thought it sounded like a great effect and had someone build just that into a pedal. Vox had no idea how to market the thing, thought it would be good on trumpet. That’s why they had Clyde McCloy endorse the things.
Yeah! Get after it with that Silver Sky!
Beautiful Silver Sky
I love the Klon Centar (at least the clone I have). I would love for someone to make that Bass Centaur too though. They are quite different to my ears, but I think I might like the Bass one as much - if not more. I am loving the wider tonal range, actually. I would use that one differently for sure, but would love to add it to my collection, even if not in the end to my board.
I’ve been using a klon clone for bass and am addicted to the sound
Please make a bass klon clone. Guitar sounds so much better played through bass equipment
The getaur plugs into the sintar.
Big thanks to Josh to make me discover Ambient by Brian Eno , listening to that in loop while coding , thanks
it's so goooooood!
Nice playing. Question I own original zen drive ,I’m having trouble balancing volume. The volume pot is super hot, is there any thing I could do without changing the pot to try and get a balance between on and off.
Please make this!
Next video from JHS we need is the Ibanez Bass Tube Screamer. Works really well with guitar obviously but with Bass it can be really nasty
Late edit: love the Precision Bass used in this video. Best bass ever!
@@Dr.Garlic.perfect for those Grand Funk Railroad overdriven bass sounds!
If you have a Quad Cortex, please capture that pedal and I’ll gladly buy it!
Fantastic album choice! 🫵🔥💩😏
It was quite subtle to me on the guitar comparisons, but on bass it was pretty apparent.
Great opening jam! What model is that SilverSky (se or core etc)?
You don't need any practice. All you need to do is buy a Klon, a 1959 Les Paul, and a Dumble amp. You will be an instant superstar!
2:43 Holy crap you have Wonder Woman’s Invisible Guitar.
There’s the second mode on the 3 series k-drive sorted then!!
Josh, I have a question for you.
Do you have a Gamma HM-3, and have you played it if so?
Music for Airports, that's sooo good.
Sweet!
Personal question, Josh: Does it feel any different to you hitting the ‘He has the Box’ stinger yourself when you’re sitting alone in your basement, compared to someone else hitting it for you when you do a fully-fledged JHS Show from the Pedal Museum? Feels to me like it’s more emotionally charged coming from the basement ...
I hear different formants in the basement version.
Subtle, but they are there.
Josh, check out the 6 hour time-stretched mix of Ambient 1. Hardcore ambient.
Brian is the greatest!!
where can we find info on effects units that are built into amps, i.e. chorus', reverbs etc. i have a suspicion they're modeled after some pretty epic pedals in general. episode idea? xo, r.
Josh I recently purchased a Line 6 Pod for Bass and I'm very hopeful I've never played one before I don't know what it sounds like but I just bought it sight unseen on reverb for 70 bucks can you tell me anything about it are they good
So you explain a high pass filter here. Can you confirm if the AT+ manual is wrong in calling the eq knob a “high pass filter”?
What is the acrylic guitar that's hanging on the wall in the background? Looks like a bit like a cross between an Ernie Ball St. Vincent and an Explorer, but its neither.
It wouldn’t be $7k if it was forgotten. Sounds great though, congratulations
Time to make Bass 3 series based on that pedal...
It would go directly on my bass board.
I want both goddammit 😭😭😭
JHS klone imminent with switchable horseman / hippoman bass mod. JHS Mythic Hype Drive
Which drum machines have you been using?
Thank you
So how many have you built already? Lol I’d consider buying the “JHS Bass Unit”
Disappointing on bass, sadly. But sounds great (dare I say better than the standard model) on guitar.
We're reading the same comments as Josh!
If the difference is on the inside, could bass Klon centaurs be sold as regular centaurs with the difference in sound put down to unit to unit differences? Guess not many people would be able to compare out in the wild
Is it possible to do this mod to the notaklon? I've recently got one to use on bass, but just finding out about this one.
Hello Joshua,
I have a few simple questions for you:
Do you have copy rights to this effects pedal?
Are the original parts still available?
Why can't you reproduce this pedal?
Could it be that some people who own a Klon don't realize they may have a bass model Klon seeing as it doesn't designate anywhere , that I saw, where it designates that it is a bass model? Some people, myself included, don't usually get an original sales receipt or open up a pedal to peek inside when they buy a used pedal.
”…people always get that wrong. It’s a little annoying.”
(less than a minute later)
Klon… Klon. Klon. Klon… Klon…
🤪
Safe to say any product developed and produced in very small quantities is considered very rare after decades pass by.
Josh, can you do a video on all the STEEL PANTHER pedals!!!
