I've been trying to get better tone from my smoke detector for years. I think this will be the magic bullet. Thank you, JHS!
The warm chirp of an almost dead battery on. Demand
Glad to see other bonsai predicament fans
The musical instrument from Nathan For You, correct?
They have the best piezo discs in them, seriously loud and wide frequency response.
I have a vintage First Alert custom shop in off-white. Would recommend.
This is Monty Python level. No break in character.
Totally brilliant.
I wish they would have waited to release it though.
April 1st is bad enough without extending it to the 31st.
I can't take it lol. I was like "wtf is this bullshit" and then realized it HAD to be a joke.
Of course, tomorrow would have been the perfect release date...
But Josh, your delivery was awesome. Kudos !
Waiting for Guffman level stuff
Not doing a character.
Was 99% sure this was a joke but his delivery is so good that there were times where I was like "Wait, is he serious?"
Me too 🤣
I've totally fell. April's fool is not a thing in Argentina and this is so dumb, but... What the hell do I know...? This guy saves batteries from different years... Digital Hi-fi cables are very dumb also....
I'm dumb and I thought I was going crazy when all the demos sounded the same.
I thought it was going to be a real thing when I clicked on it, and when he started pulling out batteries I was like, "Oh, wait, the other day was April Fools wasn't it."
This happens to me every year. When will I learn. 🤓
The fact Josh is a pedal builder who pokes fun at the obsessions of pedal buyers is hilariously ironic. Josh cured me of my pedal addiction. He unplugged me from the Matrix. Who does that? I love this guy!
Yeah, he un-ironically owns over 4,000 pedals and can give us near thesis-level explanations of how each and every one of them functions, how they were designed and the nature of the components that give each their magic.
I love him for it.
@@rogerlmoore4544 Exactly! At the same time he tells us they aren't all that different, obsessing over them is not as productive as making music, sky high prices are absurd etc... This is anti-consumersim in an industry sieged by, well rampant consumerism. He is unique. He tells me why his competitors build a pedal you should buy. Most companies do everything in their power to do the opposite, to the point of tearing down their competition. He has morals and compassion. A rarity in the business world. I wasn't being disingenuous...I wish more people in the industry operated the way he does.
@@rogerlmoore4544 I think it's closer to 10k
Pretty sure he's just trying to convince us we don't need vintage pedals so the prices crash and he can complete his collection
[Insert maniacal laughter]
@@MadMarcMulligan SICK !
Finally, someone is addressing the wild variety of tones available through different battery types. I’ve been talking about this for years with my team of doctors.
5150🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😅
They're just modding the EQ & dynamics a bit. This device does not change the power going 2 your pedals or what that does 2 them. It's a $kam. Get reel = there is not even a power output on the thing = LOL!! It's their admitted 'approximization of the effect', & if it's this subtle, it's pretty much pointless & U should just fiddle with real effects like EQ & dynamics 2 get way more control of the flavors, without the 'mystery knobs' game.
@@Deathrape2001 It doesn’t even exist, it’s a joke
Hahhahahhahabhah
Seriously? "Team of doctors"? How many psychiatrists does one man need?
This was a slow burn April Fool's master stroke. Josh's delivery deserves an Oscar. 10/10.
It’s tooooooooo long
The joke is on us that don't correlate April 1st with fool's day 😳
It was about 5 minutes in, when he started talking about the effects loop that I started to put it together.
Very reminiscent of the Google April Fools jokes from years past. Kudos
The fact he showed the battery drawer in the Rob Scallon video made this so believable.
The fact is, if JHS actually released this, Josh would sell millions of them.
Not a single wink at the camera. Brilliant. But also, he really did have all those batteries. Josh is a collector’s collector.
Tony with Voodoo Lab here. Bat Sim needs to be a built-in feature in our next generation of Pedal Power. Looking forward to exploring this fantastic opportunity.
Yes tbh I feel my sparkle drive would benefit from de-sparkling a little bit... Maybe this would help! 🤔
Man, I can't wait to try this with my pacemaker! Super stoked to see how the control functions interact with my life expectancy!
Dude - my pacemaker has an internal charge pump and subtle bump at 1 kHz. It helps my cardiac rhythms cut through the mix enough to justify the pricetag!
*super stroked
@Manuel Bolognani, you beat me to it.😂
Throw that on the Kodak mode and you got some serious tone
I was not ready for this. I was just scrolling to see who fell for this and I was in no way prepared to read this statement. Good shit.
I wish they had put in the option to use an expression pedal to slide across all the different modes. What a wildly psychedelic ride that would have been to go from kodak to EHX at the peak of my solo.
That is why I'm holding off buying the pedal. You know the MK II version is right around the corner.
@@tres913 It's a WONDER Rhett Shill wasn't in on this!
Nobody in the audience will notice at all. The differences R very subtle = infinitely less than a wah or simply twiddling some tone knob.
@@Deathrape2001 I applaud you for you tenacity but how many of these comments did you write before realizing april fools?
Fuck yeah 🤘
That 24V knob is such a cool idea! No longer will plugging in a wrong cable be the only source of fried effects pedals, we can now fry them as fast or slow as we please 😂
We're going to need a blooper reel for this! There's no way you got through this without completely losing it!
Yep we gonna need that in our lives!!!
Please!!!
Totally!!
People were probably dying in the background, constantly. Imagine having to film this and trying not to laugh, hahahaha!
I just wonder how Josh can stay this serious for such long periods of times. He must have exploded from laughter afterwards.
I’m a board certified forensic engineer, so I appreciate the time and effort required to investigate the wide spectrum of batteries, and then design a workable simulator. Well done! I’d like to see a similar study of hook and loop fasteners (I.e. Velcro) that we use to hold our pedals to the pedal board. Like many players I use different types of velcro depending on the tone I want to achieve from a particular pedal. An in-line velcro simulator would be ideal to get a specific nuance when the pedal isn’t on a board.
I'm the same but on germanium fuzz I use superglue the old formula to be precise...it glues the mix better with my fuzz and drums
Honestly it's hard for me to respect anyone who uses such outdated terminology; correctly expressed, you are talking about "hook and loop fastening systems", a blanket term that encompasses a truly dizzying array of systems, each with their own resonant capitulance and strang, each coming in multiple colours, thicknesses, and batch dynamics.
I implore you to look into some of the more experimental work using mismatched hook/loop ratios, with the ratios structured along either various point on the harmonic sequence or more classic ratios like the Fibonacci sequence; it's a real rabbithole.
Wow! I was just gonna say that I once used Gorilla Glue Gel to hold my fuzz down but it made it too thick and wooly. It was sort of like the fuzz particles were stuck together and kind of gooey but still really hairy.
I'm all-in for the Velcrolizer pedal, that must be the real deal when trying to push those low-mids and make the sound rounder and organic, see what I mean? not like cheap glue that sucks the tone away and eats all the high end
ur a genius
This is genius! 😂 I absolutely did not realize this was a joke when I saw the thumbnail and title. Seemed completely within the realm of JHS pedal nerd possibility!
That John Mayer battery 👌 You should totally do a series of signature player batteries. I need a JHS Paul Gilbert 9v infused with his electrifying shred energy to keep up with my playing.
I’ve always liked the slightly compressed 2k audio range that the 97-02 Panasonic Zinc chlorides have. I call them the PanaKlonics.
Josh Scott this you? 😂
My booooooooooooooooooooyyyyy
Starting a slow clap for you from TN. I expect it to reach you at some point.
I'm always on the lookout for the Eveready one-eye cat 9 lives logo vintage 9volts for my 70's Big Muff Pi for that Jimi at Monterey sound.
Wait until you put one in a Bad Monkey…
Josh is probably the only person I can listen to talking about batteries without being bored 😅 well done
I'm thinking this is an April 1st but damn.
Dammit I got fooled 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I like batteries
I like batteries too
Idk man it was pretty damn boring
I recently found your channel after getting back into playing guitar and have been watching almost every video you guys have made for about a month now. I feel like you guys are the reason I've been more interested in learning about different circuits and pedals in general lately, and when this video came out I had to re-watch it a few times because I felt like an idiot for not understanding how you could "boost voltage" through the cable and how John Mayer's play style was somehow altered the battery in one of his pedal's... along with everything else about this pedal as a whole. I told myself that this would be the first JHS pedal that I would buy.
Almost a week later, and I'm realizing just how much of an idiot I actually am and haven't had as good of a laugh in a while.
This Channel is awesome. You guys are awesome. Thank you JHS :)
Watching much later, I feel you! I was like "can't hear the difference at all...". Wait, when was it released?
This is the best April fools day vid I have seen this year. Josh is on his own level with content.
Ain't it a bit Early JHS?😂😂
Not for Australia.
I was really, really, really hoping this was real. It was going to be a fascinating social experience watching tone snobs switch seamlessly from Bad Monkey rage to battery powered fandom overdrive 😄
Bravo, y'all. The amount and quality of work put into this (not only the video but even the "I believe in magic" shirt), is on a whole new tier of April Foolery.
Next, the guitar pick emulator, where you play with your fingers and it accurately simulates your pick of choice

All the demos sound almost the same = nothing N E 1 will care about in the audience (& this is coming from a 'tone wood' fan =) Also his 'back to back' demo is useless because it's playing different sections of the tune = totally unscientific!
@@Deathrape2001 that went over your head, didn't it?

The real magic I believe in here is how in the heck you guys were able to keep the straight faces throughout this delivery that must have been in production for the last year. Kudos Josh, superbly done, well played, bar is way high now, not sure how you're gonna top this. (BTW, the Kroger 9V batteries specifically gives a Bad Monkey a subtle peppery/nutmegy spice you can almost smell when you put the gain knob around 1 o'clock.) :)
I think what you're describing with the Kroger battery is the tannins from the Tonewood of the banana tree that Curious George visited before his brain was donated to pedal science and became the Bad Monkey.
I can’t believe you didn’t include vintage sears batteries. They’re the only way to get really authentic 60’s tones and the aftermarket prices are just insane. A 1958 Blue Label sears is the “burst” of vintage batteries.
FACTS
v2
Y not just put a variable resisance 'potentiometer' or something between the power supply & the pedal input? I'm not an 'electrician' / engineer but something that can vary the volts should B enough yes? & maybe run it from a 'variable capacitor' circuit 2 get the 'dying battery' vibe, & I guess something 2 vary the amps 2? So those 3 things should B all U need, & label it clearly = volts, amps, & 'reserve' =) & instead of 'mystery icons' can have a list of settings 2 approximate different 'battery styles' in the manual, or written on the side in a table or something? Lots more space than trying 2 fit it around a knob = like a list of what 'number position' for each knob, listing the 'battery styles' on the left in the list. Lot of 'pedals' R just 'overpriced toys' that don't really help but just confuse 2 rip people off. B scientific =)
Yes, those 60's Sears tones would be "Silvertones"
@Dram dammit don't tell.... now prices going to go through the roof. I'm already pressed about him talking about RS batteries and now you too....come on man.
I love how truly different and unique each demo sounds! ❤ I ordered several for Christmas gifts!
I’ll bet there is a Kemper digital battery profiler in the works as a result.
This was a great response to an impulse that people never knew they needed.
JHS will always be there as the OG battery re-emulator.
I have already placed my pre-order.
The scary thing is how convincing he is. Like he could really be this deep into pedals.😅
the believability of this comes from the fact that Josh is a pedal weirdo. he is definitely the type of weirdo who would conceivably obsess about vintage batteries.
Could be? Dude, i have watched at least 5 JHS videos where I had to check the date to make sure it wasn't April 1. Although it's really the players who go out there on that stuff.
The craziest thing is, these would sell, and sell quite well.
The Rig Doctor actually tried to cash in on the vintage battery concept, so Josh had me fooled for a few seconds, thought he might be going down that road. Then I remembered that we were knocking on the April Fools door and that Josh has a great talent for keeping a straight face while exercising his great but weird sense of humor that we are all fans of. 🙂
The thing is, this was probably a real pedal that he built and designed and made a video for but the JHS crew said he could either be committed to an institution or release it for April 1st and never make another one 😂😂
JHS is so ahead of the game, they do April Fools in March.
conspiracy theory - wild man, wild!
Ita April here ;)

I feel like I’m going to college for guitar tone history. Every time I turn on your channel if there’s somebody who knows more about these petals I’ve never met them, so thank you for sharing.

My favourite was the third, the boss demo, as I finally heard the disappointment in myself for falling for this amazing prank. Well played!
This is a Mic-Drop level Masterpiece. Henceforth all videos will be categorized as before BS or After BS! If the JHS Show ended here I would understand, not even mad about it.
I love that you replicated the demo song exactly each time. Really helps for comparison.

Hahahahahahaha
Kodak mode was outstanding! The other settings where meh…😂
Lol
The best bit is that every time he plays a demo, it's the same damned track. I love these guys.
As a drummer I learned so much! This is so similar to how the tone of a drum is dramatically influenced by the composition and age of the tuning rods; the older ones have undergone so much molecular decomposition of the metal alloys and slight ionization from interacting with certain cosmic rays at the quantum level. This accounts for the unique tone of 50s and 60s drums, not to mention the influence of the players who hit them before!
You should try it on your metronome. It will do wonders for your pocket playing.
Absolutely fabulous. Gonna buy one for each of the 26 pedals on my board. Thank you JHS! 🙏
Love the name!

If you go to the site and add the pedal to cart, you get a link to a $25 shirt that says “I believe in magic” that has the Bat-Sim logo on it 😂
I knew what was up by the thumbnail, but after watching it for a laugh, I was amazed at how well composed you remained throughout this.
In the next version it would be nice to hear the difference of the USB types in the USB Mode. I swear I can hear a 'vintagy' and smooth sound in the early USB 1.0 . Thank you for putting so much work into this studies!
Absolutely fantastic! It's going to be hilarious to see the battery prices jump in reverb! Love you guys, thanks for the laughs!
I prefer to use 6 AA batteries in series for each of my pedals. It enables me to mix various AA batteries together so I can fine tune my tone for each pedal. Sure, it's expensive and I have to use a seperate pedalboard just for the batteries but what matters is my tone.
Volt staging. It's an underappreciated technique to charge up your tone.
If you cut open the casing of a 9v, you'll see 6 1.2v-1.5v cells in them. As far as I can tell, all non-rechargeable batteries are a bunch of 1.2v-1.5v cells packaged together. Would be kind of cool if you did do that, shrink wrapped the together in a brick, and then put a 9v snap connector on it.
Do you use a buffer to avoid tone suck?
@@steveng.clinard1766 I use a buffer before and after each pedal. Better safe than sorry.
@@last808 Nickleback doesn't buffer their batteries and they always sound like poop.
When he set the pedal down on the table, knobs-down. XD
Well-played Josh...
The date code on a battery opens up another level. Batteries made in the spring and autumn have a 'wetness' to the sound, due to the moisture in the air. This really stands out when they are used in reverb and modulation pedals.
I really dig the Taiwanese summer "humid" sound as well.
Accept for the summer of 2018, when much drier conditions led to a serious drop in quality compared to normal. Batts from Aug 2017 skyrocketed in value and I believe John Mayer bought the last known shipment.
@@kevinr.3542 Yes, crazy that John Mayer knew the battery tone secret. I've heard that Jimmy Page gained that knowledge on the crossroads. I wonder if John Mayer also sold his soul for an old Radio Shack battery?
I prefer the ones made during monsoon season, super wet and the sound just drips.
It took me till the third “demo” to realize this was his April Fools joke, delivered a day early. Absolutely MASTERFUL Josh and team. I have no doubt that all the fact in this video are accurate and that’s what makes this so damn good as a joke. You got me…for a minute.

I got scammed buying some DDR- brand nein volt batteries. Be careful who you buy from.
My favorite battery sound is a CR 2032, I just feel like I keep time better with one powering my pedals. 🙌
9v batteries just went up in price. Thanks, Josh.

O.M.G! Finally! I'm ordering 10 so I can just set and forget for each fuzz face. People overlook the nuances and creaminess that sag variance provides. Adding a vintage 9V Bat to your interface also adds some grit and texture to your DAW...this is incredible!
🤣
Finally! I've been holding onto some Radio Shack 9V batteries for the past 10 years. I'm glad their potential is finally being realized. If you want one, I will be selling them on Reverb for $600. What a bargain!
Bargain,. I would have paid $650.
We all know you didn't even pay for 'em, you used your Battery Club Card for a freebee per month.
I know this is a joke, but after seeing all the batteries, I kind of think Josh does actually collect batteries.
he actually does
Obviously :)
I doubt any of them are any good. The newest marketing wank from Energizer is a double-priced battery that boasts a, "10 yr shelf life" so, I assume that would be good for a 9v.
The fluency of his lunacy is remarkable! He could go on, and on, and on, and on... A true master
I vastly prefer the EHX mode because of the velvety sag around 4k

I love you guys. You had me smiling the whole way to work. That’s priceless. Thank you😂❤ Much love guys
Good thing we've all learned to play with our ears and not our wallets. Each setting is so unique, and inspiring. Especially that Mayer tone, amazing how the battery just has a certain magic. I believe in magic.
Just ordered two. Can't wait to stack EHX mode into boss mode!
That won't work -- they'll cancel out so you'll need to order another one

What really impresses me about this is that I actually sat here and watched the entire video. I have no idea why. I felt like I was glued to my seat, totally against my will. THIS is why we subscribe! People like Glenn Fricker waste everybody's time with "tonewood" and "speaker" shootouts, meanwhile here Josh is doing the REAL science.
@6079 Smith W well in regards of tonewood ..
The Boss mode sounds EXACTLY like a Roland 9V from the 90s. Spectacular.
all jokes aside, I'd like to thank you for making your knowledge so accessible without ever being boring or condescending. I doubt im ever going to make a guitar pedal (unless you create a diy one, with swap out-able resistors and capacitors). I suffer from anxiety so i'd never gig or play my music for anyone else out side my own house and i dont have any real world musician friends, so even though ive had guitars and messed about with recording myself with DAWs for the last twenty years, some of the fx basics Ive only learned recently from you. things like putting a fuzz first in the signal chain, or even the difference in types of overdrive and why they are different. Things some people may take for granted. thank you, love your show
The best part about this is using the exact same clip for every demo. I love this channel
Nope. Look closer. They are different
Josh, if you do a V2 would you consider experimenting with car batteries to see what sonic possibilities may exist there? Or maybe you could try some really high current devices - i would love to see a pedal called the defibrillator.
Yes, I need 850cca to get the right headroom on my clean boost.
I plugged my guitar into an MRI scanner, and now I'm literally John Mayer.
The level of nerdiness here is heroic. Herculean, even. I am envious and in awe. I'll take two.
I had to click the link just to see what Josh and the team were up to... You guys are a crack up. Thank you so much for a big belly laugh this morning. I needed it.
Damn, I'm already thinking about a V3 while still waiting for the V1! That's JHS love we are feelin'. I always choose the heaviest batteries to use in my Boss Metal Zone, Distortion and several Overdrives that are also used with the foot. So glad to have found someone who speaks in my language. And this is so true that it could be clearly seen how the boys were feeling more energized while playing... and in the length of this video. Thank you very much, Josh! You are a life savior!
What’s truly amazing is the amount of ingenuity, the extreme perversity and the abundance of surplus time that allow JHS to conjure such satisfyingly ridiculous products as this. I applaud Josh and his minions for being the enlightened masters they truly are! BTW I’m seriously considering buying one (yup, they’re available for purchase!) to keep my pet rock company on the shelf.
Now we need to see a blindfold challenge on Andertons TV where Pete tries to guess the modes 😄 Well done guys! Nerd comedy.
This took me way too long to figure out… Now I have trust issues. Thanks JHS!
Years ago, while working at Daddy’s Junky Music in Boston, I got into a polite argument with Stu Hamm while getting him set up for a clinic, because he insisted vintage batteries sounded the best, and I thought he was full of himself. That I got taken in by this video is both a credit to Josh and a humbling moment to me. I really did think he had actually worked it out.
The effort you guys put into this is amazing, I feel like a 9v connection like the volture would have made this "somewhat more believable". Keep up the good work this was a lot of fun
Woah, that sounds really unique! I gotta say the radioshack sound the best cuz of the retro sounding mids. Big up, Josh! I'm buying this ASAP.
This is April 1st commitment. Full disclosure, I was about two minutes in before I remembered what day this is. Excellent performance Josh!

My favorite mode was JHS mode.
This pedal is now selling for $9000 on Reverb.
I don't like many videos but this is pure gold my friend. It's been a while sense I've seen art like this.
I can’t tell you how timely this is. Those old Radio Shack batteries have been like unobtainium ever since Radio Shack went out of business. There’s even some guy selling them for like $600 on Reverb right now! $99 for a pedal that does all that and more is an absolute steal!
I just...
Can't...
Possibly equal to The Pedal Musical for pure mastery of a genre.
Top 3 episodes.

Honestly, this pedal idea alone is amazing. I think this is the most innovative pedal to date.
Absolutely brilliant! 24 minutes of pure gold. Crazy thing is I did make myself a battery sim power supply for germanium gear, primarily original 70s pignoses, but that was just voltage and series resistance and it does make a big difference. So as crazy as this vid is it is rooted in something real.
This is so cool and genius. Congrats to your team and you.
The best part is when Josh is able to imitate the Klon pedal when using the Bat-Sim and an overdrive.
I dig the little history lesson about batteries 😂.
Finally a pedal that can get me that “brink of battery death” breakup that I’ve been looking for since I started collecting fuzz pedals. Thank you JHS!
Josh, you forgot about the Most Important characteristic of any battery, R_sub_I, the Internal Resistance. Wait, is that the Capacity control? Well played Sir, well played 😊
I look forward to the Q2 JHS drop every year 🤘🏽
Josh, as fantastic as you are at building pedals, and curating pedal history, you should give all of that up to focus on April Fool pranks. Genius level of seriousness and preparation went into this. 😂😂😂
