  • In this video, Ryan shows you how to install pistons on your engine. He's working on rebuilding this small block Chevy 350 which he pulled out of his 1976 Chevy Camaro. If you want to know more about his Camaro, The Banana Peel, check out Episode 5 of Burnout: • I Bought My Dream Car,...

Okay so the ring tool looks good, but I guess without it the rings can be pressed together with a couple of screw drivers, or is there a better way for those without the tool?

Theoretically you could do it with anything. However, it will be much harder to get each piston in and it will take much longer for each one. The other thing you want to be careful of is potentially scratching the rings, piston skirts, or cylinder walls. Especially if using screwdrivers or something else like it. It should be doable, but I would really recommend picking one up from harbor freight or somewhere else for $9.

@@TheBurnoutShow okay so I tried it without the tool and.... complete waste of time, very difficult!

@@TheBurnoutShow No worries, refitting pistons with old rings is easy because they are already fairly compressed, but with new rings forget it! Its worth noting that old ring grooves can become clogged with old oil, so need to be cleaned. Also, old rings can be closed right up, almost impossible to remove, but by pushing one side in with a screw driver and hammer, its possible to get leverage. My next task is to remove the timing cog from the camshaft, I guess there is an extractor tool for that...

You put assembly Lube on the bearings, not the bolts...
