    loved this michelle!!
i’m doing a bachelors degree at a full time ballet school (i’m pursuing becoming a dancer) so i definitely do not have the ‘typical’ university life.
i would love to visit korea for a while and try to learn the language but the reality seems quite daunting, especially since i’m british so i haven’t got any korean in me haha. but your videos do inspire me and i hope one day i pluck up the courage to go !!!

I enjoyed watching this video about your experience as a full-time international student at a Korean University. For the exchange student part, I think it depends on the student itself. I did an exchange program at a Korean university for a semester three years ago. In my case, I was paired in a group project with all the full-time students including one international student. I guess I was unlucky because one of my group member didn't show up since day one and another student never showed up for group meetings. So, the remaining group members, including me, had to work twice the workload to successful complete our group project including the presentation. I also had to be super alert with my group chat because one of the group member at that time happened to be out of the country for a few days so we always had to connect through the group chat to make sure we complete what needed to be done. The class that I took was taught in English and the presentation had to be presented in English so it kind of put more weight on me and the group leader to contribute more on writing the report part. Nevertheless, we did successfully completed our presentation. I'm just sharing my experience as an exchange student who used to study for a semester. Hope it is helpful for other student viewers if not, please ignore my comment. :D

Love your new room Michelle! You did a good job for sure. You're such a strong girl who can do everything and actually strives to achieve your dreams, which is so admirable! 😜 There are a few things about studying in Korea that i'm interested in knowing the real experience:
    - What is the senior students (sunbae) - juniors culture really like in Korea? Are the sunbae usually nice or bullying to juniors (like in many Korean dramas)? Haha. Did you have any personal experience (good and bad)?
    - Do Koreans really care a lot about their (and others') appearances? And do they favor pretty girls/boys over not so good looking ones? What are your thoughts on this matter?
Hope you will be able to make a part two of this video because it is very helpful in getting to understand the Korean culture as well as the reality of oversea student experience. Thank you Michelle! Have a wonderful day 😊❤️

im korean and have friends studying in yonsei after growing up in canada, and they sometimes feel like foreigners too just because they didn't grow up with the same korean culture (despite speaking fluent korean). so it was hard to get along with the local students sometimes! but they definitely had an advantage of being korean/speaking korean as compared to a foreign student from another ccountry.

    • @michellechoii
      @michellechoii  5 років тому +653

Since I'm American, I'm considered a foreigner. It was really weird at first because on the school roster, there would be the word "foreigner" next to my name hahahaha😑

Thanks for all the helpful information!! I’m planning on attending school in Korea for summer term next year and Yonsei was a school I was considering because it is a sister school to my university. It sounds intimidating but I think, as you mentioned, being an exchange student would make it less stressful than it can be for other students. Once again thanks for sharing so much helpful information!

As an ex-exchange (UCEAP) student at Yonsei, we could choose whether we wanna do P/NP or grades. Although it is true that we could choose to travel and have fun while at Korea, I also had a lot of work to do. It really depends on the amount of credits that your parent university enforces on you.

That's crazy. I had the same exact experience as you except I want to your rival school KU. I also studied in a regular major instead of the international division which was a unique experience to say the least. omg 팀플 as a 교포 was the most stressful right? I got really good at Korean social politics though and later on it helped when I worked with Korean employees. I always felt sad when exchange student friends would move on and only keep in touch through FB or Kakao. It's like by graduation I had friends from all corners of the world linked by a vague Korean connection.Wasn't it weird when exchange students would be surprised to find out you were a regular student and at a regular major to boot? They were like why live life on hard mode. Also at KU professors would post exam scores with 학번 and not our names so I never felt that undue pressure. Man, I stumbled on your channel and it has me reminiscing all the way here in New York. Did you have a Korean name for 출첵? I feel like if we had a beer we would have so much to talk about.

I went to Ewha as a regular full-time student, and this was my experience, too. Especially the part about exchange students not really caring and not showing up to presentations. Because they're only there for a semester, so they just skip class, travel, and party. Unlike Yonsei and KU, Ewha didn't have a lot of American students, and it was a little harder to make connections. It was also tiring to make friends with exchange students, only to say goodbye after a semester. Then, I had to start over and do the whole make friends again, and they'd want to do touristy things again, which was tiring by the 3rd sem. Making friends with native Koreans was also so much harder since I have no Korean background at all. I miss my time at Ewha, but it was also really rough socially.

I just discovered your channel incidentally and it makes me really interested. In the meantime, I haven't had the chance to think about Korean-foreigner. I'm too curious to watch your Q&A video which you said about your ethnicity as well. You said your ethnicity is Korean, but after I watched some your videos I think you can't speak Korean well, can you? Most of my life I have lived in Korea, except for last year. When I used to live in Scotland from UK, I realized background is really important to understand each other even though they look similar. I'd like to understand your values, idea, thinking through your channel. Thanks for giving me the chance to understand about Korean-American. Thanks again!

I would be in South Korea for 3 months, but I'm debating if I should extend it to December. I think it would be a good fit bc 1. Korea seems pretty extroverted and I love going out (literally i want to go to Hongdae so bad bc i love nightlife lol) 2. I'm American and Mexican so I want a completely different experience from the "west" bc i have no ties to the "east" or korea ofc. I guess what holds me back is i'll be in Yonsei for summer+fall??? idk haha love ur channel btw! :)

Idk but for such a long time I have had a feeling that you're Yonsei student =))) It's my dream school
Btw love your videos and i'm glad that you decided to pursue your dream. And i have some questions
    1. did your job as a tutor fully fund your monthly expenses? how did you pay for tuition fees?
    2. are there any minimum language requirements that intl. student should meet before entering? If not, is it okay to study the language and the major at the same time?
    Thank you so much

hi, the video was so very insightful, you had mentioned that u didn't take the UIC program , I wanna major in marketing and other business related majors and was wondering if they are taught in English as a full time regular student or in Korean.(without the UIC program) or does the UIC program have these majors in English differently.i hope this question makes sense, thank you
